Athener Kaffee-Tagebuch: Abschied vom Omonia

Athens to Loutraki
A last breakfast looking up at the Acropolis and then we were in a bus and being shuttled out of Athens to begin our ride (and frankly I wasn’t sorry, the traffic is chaotic).
Our first ride on mainland Greece was beautiful. We had a gentle climb from Megara (around 3%) and then what on the elevation line looked like a downhill, however you’d come around a corner and there’d be a sharp uphill. I was hardly game to go into the big chainring. We rolled past vineyards, olive tree groves and pine forests, with stunning views down to the ocean.
Morning tea was at a marina and then another slightly more serious climb before lunch. We had a picnic in Perachora and then an out and back to a fabulous location where you literally have ruins on the beach 😝
I think nearly everyone went for a swim before hopping back on our bikes for the last 18km to the hotel (which included another nasty climb 🙄).
Our hotel tonight is gorgeous. We’re all wishing we had a rest day here. It’s at the beginning of Loutraki (which looks quite busy and uninviting) and is right on the water, very open and modern and tranquil.
Having arrived we dropped off our bags and had a drink with Charlie before showering and washing clothes before aperitivos and the briefing for tomorrow. After another delicious dinner Sam gave a talk on the Odyssey. It’s all starting to make a bit more sense now as I feel the story really is a bit of a lesson in pride before a fall, though Odysseus does finally prevail in the end.

The Mediterranean is Calling
I know I’m not the only one who loves exploring ancient Europe. There’s nothing like the thrill of climbing the Acropolis with a private guide or venturing out to an actual excavation site — and skipping the crowd. I was speaking with a colleague of mine who had such a thrill recently. After a couple of history-packed days, she headed to islands like Mykonos and Ithaca to relax and recharge.
This conversation inspired me to share some of my favorite hotel and resort recommendations that are sure to pique your interest in this fabulous destination.
The land of olive trees, sea and sun, is calling your name.
HOTEL GRAND BRETAGNE ATHENS
When you arrive in Athens, you’ll want to combine history and heritage with a stay at Hotel Grand Bretagne Athens. This gorgeous hotel has been situated in the heart of the city since 1874. Breathtaking views of the Acropolis and Parliament are only the beginning; you’ll be within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas and museums, and ancient sites like the original Olympic Stadium.
I can also arrange a massage or beauty treatment at the hotel’s GB Spa. You’ll be living like a star; celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Connery, Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z have all stayed in the Grand Bretagne’s Royal Suite.
NEW HOTEL ATHENS
New Hotel offers a more modern, artsy vibe with neoclassical architecture and design. Owner and Greek Cypriot industrialist Dakis Joannou is one of Greece’s foremost collectors of contemporary European art that you’ll admire throughout your stay. New Hotel’s Penthouse Suite offers 360-degree city views of Lycabettus Hill and the Acropolis — you just can’t beat it.
You’ll want to explore the nearby Ermou Street, one of Athen’s main shopping areas that leads to the bazaar-like Monastiriki. When it’s time to indulge for dinner, New Hotel’s restaurant features both local and international dishes, and the rooftop bar allows you to continue admiring Athen’s amazing sights.
SANTA MARINA MYKONOS
Now, let’s talk relaxation. Located on Ornos Bay, in a private peninsula at the southernmost point of Mykonos, Santa Marina’s all-white villas are designed as complete, private homes. You may have seen this traditional Mykonian style in movies. Your balcony will open onto a panoramic view of the turquoise sea. Trust me, just the view alone is worth the trip!
As a guest in an exclusive villa, you’ll enjoy a private infinity pool, yet still benefit from the resort’s restaurants and amenities like butler service. Ask me about the Ginkgo Spa and Buddha-Bar Beach.
VILLA NORMA IN ITHACA
I also know how to book what may be the most secluded, private residence in Greece. Villa Norma’s interiors are so luxurious, it almost feels Tuscan. This area of Ithaca is best known for its emerald-green waters and private white-pebble beach; it’s truly a photogenic example of Mediterranean nature. As the second smallest of the Ionian islands, Ithaca is a dreamy escape. A walk through the expansive private gardens will leave you feeling inspired. Villa Norma also comes with chef service, a villa manager as well as a skipper and captain with three boats. You’ll want to transfer to and from Kefalonia by Riva boat! Ask me about the many other activities to experience here.
MY NETWORK IS LIMITLESS
When you book through a travel advisor, not only do you receive my world of resources, but my network’s best insight as well. Yes, they’ve traveled all around the world, too! My army of advisors root for your vacation dreams as much as I do, and I have access to their knowledge and experience. Additionally, we work with an extensive network of the finest hotels, restaurants, venues and tour companies that allow me to arrange special amenities and perks found nowhere else. As you know, luxury experiences are all about the human touch. Let’s connect so I can customize your dream Grecian getaway.

17 places to see in Thessaloniki, Greece for starters
Thessaloniki is a city loved like few others. It is the second largest city in Greece and it is often referred to as the Capital of the North, Cultural Capital or Co-Capital to Athens, out of the love Greeks have for it. It offers a mix of ancient and medieval history, a diverse past, romanticism, vibrant nightlife, relaxed lifestyle and delicious cuisine that few can resist. There are countless things to see and do in Thessaloniki but these are the first 17 you have to tick off your list.
1. The White Tower
The landmark of Thessaloniki was built in 1535 by the Ottomans and was used as a prison that was originally called Tower of Blood. Allegedly, it got its current name after a Jewish prisoner was freed and agreed to paint the tower white. The tower hosts a gallery and offers tremendous views to the city and the Thermaic Gulf from its top.
Tumblr media
2. Aristotle Square
This is the most popular square in Thessaloniki, with beautiful and characteristic architecture like in Olympion movie theatre and Electra Palace as well as plenty of pretty cafes, bars and retail shops.
Tumblr media
3. The harbour
The port of the city has the flair of everything old that has to adjust to the passage of time. Large industrial structures, strong artistic presence with the Museum of Cinematography and the Museum of Photography and the lively energy of the students who love to relax in this spot all together compose a special scene.
Tumblr media
4. Alexander the Great statue
How could Alexander be far from his half-sister, Thessaloniki? Alexander’s statue in Thessaloniki is the largest in Greece and was sculpted in 1974 by Eu. Moustakas.
Tumblr media
5. The Umbrellas
One of the most insta-popular spots of the city, the Umbrellas is a modern art composition by artist Giorgos Zoggolopoulos in 1995.
Tumblr media
6. The New Waterfront
The New Waterfront is a wide and long walking and cycling park starting from Macedonia Palace Hotel and reaching the Concert Hall. It is popular with everybody, young and old, couples, athletes, cyclists, children and was recently created by architects Prodromos Nikephorides and Bernard Cuomo.
Tumblr media
7. Nea Krini
Nea Krini, in the eastern suburbs of Thessaloniki, is a great place to unwind and try seafood and fish in the local restaurants. A stroll in the Aretsus Marina is a must too.
Tumblr media
8. Saint Demetrius Church
This is an emblematic Palaeochristian church, with a very long history, where the relics of Saint Demetrius are kept. Demetrius is the patron saint of the city, because his nameday celebration is in 26 October and incidentally that was the day the city was liberated from the Ottoman Empire. Besides the saint’s remains, the church has crypts and catacombs beneath and is a UNESCO monument.
Tumblr media
9. Saint Sophia Church
Another UNESCO monument, Saint Sophia church was built in the 8th century AD and is a prime example of Byzantine architecture.
Tumblr media
10. OTE Tower
Built in 1970, this 76 meter tall tower was originally OTE’s pavilion  in the Thessaloniki’s International Fair. On its top there is a rotating roof cafe from which you can enjoy views to any angle of the city.
Tumblr media
11. Turkish Baths
Thessaloniki's Turkish Baths might be the best preserved in Greece. They were built in 1444, often with materials taken from Christian churches and functioned as baths until 1968.
Tumblr media
12. Arch of Galerius
Also known as “Kamara”, this is the most common meeting point in the city. Kamara is the surviving arch of the palace the Roman Emperor Galerius built in order to celebrate his victories against the Persians.
Tumblr media
13. Upper Town
This is the elevated old town of Thessaloniki, surrounded by the fortresses. Upper Town is great for a visit in the evening and at night and it offers spectacular views to the city and sea plus many options in seafood and traditional coffee shops.
Tumblr media
14. Rotunda
Rotunda was built in the 4th century AD by emperor Galerius and it was meant to be a Pantheon or a mausoleum. Galerius died early though and the building was turned into a christian church while in the 16th century the Ottomans turned it into a mosque. Rotunda suffered a lot from earthquakes but large parts of its original mosaics are rescued.
Tumblr media
15. Ladadika
A district where oil was sold, and where prior to 1990 the sex workers would be found, earning such a reputation that songs were written about this, has nowadays become one of the hotspots of the city with vibrant restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels. Hence its vibrant lighthearted yet vaguely underground aesthetic.
Tumblr media
16. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
It is the largest archaeological museum in Northern Greece and one of the biggest in the country. Its exhibits are of huge significance and come mostly from Thessaloniki and the greater region of Macedonia. It covers prehistoric times until late antiquity.
Tumblr media
17. The Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki
It is one of the most important Byzantine museums in Greece and it is also acclaimed for its design, a notable example of Modern Greek architecture. The museum covers all aspects of everyday life in the Byzantine Empire, the ecclesiastical art, the Byzantine Emperors and the life in the imperial palace as well as the Byzantine legacy in Modern Greece.

Davide Macullo Architects Book
We are delighted to announce the release of
Davide Macullo Architects
Feeling Space by Philip Jodidio
published by Skira
Though his projects remain resolutely modern, Davide Macullo has found a path that connects his work to what can be called Architecture (with an upper-case A). He is not an ego-driven giver of new forms, but instead a subtle, sensitive interpreter of needs and desires, some expressed, some more innate. He does not come to his work armed with codes as he puts it, doing his best instead to read the meanings of time and space, in order to make residents feel that they have arrived in a place where feelings mean something, where emotion and beauty still reign.

PROFILE
Davide Macullo (b. Giornico, CH, 1965) is a Swiss architect. His international design studio, Davide Macullo Architects, based in Lugano, Switzerland, was founded in 2000.
The ethos of the studio is one that studio promotes an open and cultural exchange with architects, artists and collaborators coming from different backgrounds. The diverse contributions promote a dialogue between the specificity of the project, the universality of the contexts and the psychology of space. This ‘drawing from context’ encourages and helps sustain a local-meets-global, embracing approach to architecture, spanning from the theoretical to the practical and detail level, to territorial analysis, pedagogy and sustainability in construction.
The work of the studio includes graphic design, branding consulting and custom designed furniture, and spans to the creation of contemporary art collections for clients. They have also recently produced a customized collection of rugs for the new Chenot Palace Weggis, and a large series of Davide’s drawings (280 nr.) is included in its art collection.
In Rossa, Canton Grisons, he is a founding member of the Rossarte foundation which promotes public and private interventions in situ by international artists to influence daily life through contemporary art. The first building is the Swisshouse XXXII (Sinusoïde) created in collaboration with Daniel Buren and Mario Cristiani of Galleria Continua.
Prior to the foundation of his own studio, he was project architect in the atelier of Mario Botta with responsibility for over 200 international projects worldwide (1990-2010).
Recent projects include the newly opened Chenot Palace Weggis Health Wellness Hotel, Switzerland; the headquarters of Jansen AG in Oberriet, Switzerland; Samson Assuta Ashdod University Hospital in Ashdod, Israel; WAP ART Foundation, gallery and residence in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea; a Private Museum in Jeju, South Korea; 5* Hotel and SPA facilities in Greece; the Sino-Swiss centre in Tianjing China; a beachfront villa in Heraklion, Greece; several houses in Switzerland and abroad and urban developments in Albania.

Five “Secret” Greek Islands
A Greek Island escape makes the perfect holiday, but with around 1,400 islands in the Greek archipelago, choosing a destination that is not overrun with holidaymakers can be a challenge. While Corfu and Crete are deservedly popular, especially with first-time Greece travelers, here are five ‘secret’ Greek islands that should be on your itinerary.
 Kea
Part of the Cyclades, and close to the mainland, laid-back Kea is no secret with the locals who flock here to their weekend retreats. Ferries to Kea leave from Lavrio, a 90-minute bus trip from Athens. Kea has a laid-back atmosphere, good walking trails, and 50 miles of coastline with tiny bays and unspoiled sandy beaches. Ioulidha, has some holidays on crete charming tavernas, while the delightful hill capital of Ioulis, the marina at Vourkari and Otzias Bay are other highlights.
 Evia
Dominated by Mt Ochi, this Greek island ‘secret’, is really the second-largest Greek island after Crete. With remote villages nestled in the mountain slopes, connected by stone paths and tracks, it’s a walker’s delight. But add a captivating coastline, plenty of Roman ruins, old buildings, secluded beaches, and a wide choice of lively tavernas, and you have the perfect holiday ingredients.
The walks traverse lush valleys with old stone bridges fording streams, watermills and fountains. The walk to the Dimosaris Gorge ends at the village of Kalliani. Like Kea, you can get the ferry here from Athens. The capital, Karystos, overlooks the Aegean Sea and the Cycladic Islands in the south. Roman aqueducts, Byzantine churches and Frankish castles are interspersed with olive and fruit groves, vineyards and cypress trees and deserted beaches and coves are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
 Kalymnos
Mountainous and picturesque Kalymnos, set between the islands of Leros and Kos in the Dodecanese, is renown for its sponge divers. It is a beautiful Greek island and way less touristic than its neighbour Kos, since it’s black-sand beaches are not as attractive for swimmers. For nightlife head for Masouri, but at Vathi, a haunt of yachties, you can dine on fresh seafood and afterwards dive into crystal clear water from the little jetty. You can reach Kalymnos by ferry from Peiraias.
 Karpathos
The Aegean Dodecanese Islands, of which Karpathos is the pick, has a wild, natural beauty in the north, and is tamed and tranquil in the south. Sharp mountains, uncrowded beaches and tracks ideal for hiking make Karpathos the perfect Greek holiday experience, only without the hordes. The village of Olymbos has distinctive windmills that produce flour, while the surrounding countryside grows olives, grains, fruits, vegetables, and grapes that produce a distinctive local wine. Diafani has the remains of a Minoan settlement and Hellenistic-era public baths.
 Nisyros
Between Kos and Tilos this tiny volcanic Greek island caters mainly to day-trippers although hotel and villa accommodation is available. Ferries run between Piraeus on the mainland and Rhodes. Be sure to visit the volcano crater, view fuming mini craters and walk the pathways of the dramatic and mountainous interior. Perhaps try the sulphurous waters of the health spa. There are many charming Orthodox Christian churches as well as four uninhabited monasteries, the largest is built beside a medieval fort.

The Gulf Coast barrier island of Marco, a 7,700-acre dry-land dollop of one-time mangroves lying in turquoise and azure waters south of Naples, is now thick with houses, condominiums, strip malls, resort hotels, marinas, and golf courses, along with 18,000 year-round residents. The population swells to some 40,000 each winter.
Marco of all places: an unlikely urban habitat for Athene cunicularia floridana, a subspecies limited to peninsular Florida and the Bahamas and genetically distinct from the western Burrowing Owl, whose habitat ranges from Texas to California. The little owls are listed as threatened in Florida and protected both by state and Marco Island laws. Almost 250 breeding pairs live here, the vast majority on empty lots in burrows marked out by stakes and yellow plastic tape. At last count by Owl Watch volunteers and researchers, they had fledged 463 chicks this year, with more likely to round out the seasonal number. No one knows the total Florida population...

Target Flip Flops $3.99 on sale and cats
Those of you who know me will not be surprised to learn that I walked 11 miles today in Target flips flops. Look closely for evidence. I had my tennis shoes ready to go this morning. But a last-minute decision was a change in footwear. Sure to be regretted. My early morning taxi driver, Spiro, is now my permanent driver. He was very conscientious of walking me to ferry, telling me not to be tricked, ask where locals eat, and being there when I returned, and picking me up tomorrow and when I return to Athens in a week.
Today was just what the doctor ordered. You never realize how noisy life is even as a single person, until you go somewhere where there is no noise. My first views of Hydra, the non-motorized island, were amazing. I saw houses on every hill, beautiful clear blue water, and money and yachts, and donkeys. . Yes donkeys! because that is the only mode of transportation unless you walk. Most people got off the ferry and hired donkeys to take their luggage to B and B or boutique hotel or pensìon. At first I was judgy of “haves”, but I decided to start off off the beaten track....where no people were about
Cats cats cats. I had read about the throngs of feral cats in Greece, but didn’t see too many in Athens...here, however, cats and donkeys rule the streets. Check out photo where I am the pied piper of a family of mewing cats
'
Bisbee Arizona has an annual 1000 stair climb event...I am pretty sure I did that event up and down at least 5 times today. Up up up up up then down then up then down and across. No goal in mind, just enjoying the silence and finding all these small places to stay. I was immediately planning a week stay next trip to Greece. It was almost like being at a monastery outside all over the island. The only noise was clopping donkeys. Thank god tourists had donkeys! Every hotel or even house seems to have their own donkey tied outside. Started my trek in the sun and heat at 9:30. Stopped for lunch over looking the ocean at noon. Lunch of smoked herring dip and grilled sardines. Then back to walking. I had walked along my the sea cliffs for awhile so I turned back inside to explore more stairs....I found a historic mansion turned museum to explore....it was owned by a Greek shipping tycoon. Then all his relatives until 1974. Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Henry Fonda with his Greek wife were all in photos on the walls. Then I found some famous Greek Artists home to tour...His name is Tetris? Got me out of the heat as I pretended to be an art aficionado. But it was really cool just to walk around a traditional Greek house. I felt like it could have been Ernst Hemingway’s. So hot so hot. The only way to get from house to house or path to path was stairs! Also the stairs and paths were all made of marble stones, worn slick by hundreds of years of walking. I was baby stepping much of the time as my flip flop kept slipping out on the marble!
From there I made my way back down to the yacht marina. I decided if Elizabeth Taylor had been to Hydra, surely other famous people were here. So I hopped out onto the pier and checked out the yachts in and out for the day. I was walking by an incoming yacht sailboat...long blond braid mom, two blond middle schoolers, handsome dad and “scrubby bearded helper”. When the mom just yells at me...”hey!” And she throws me the boat rope to tie up! A man comes to take rope out of my hands and the daughter throws me a second rope. I literally stand there and start pulling the boat up to the docking spot! Not famous, just rich and beautiful.
I then walked past shops and restaurants and along the other shore/cliff path. I found the secret hidden beach where yachts anchor for the day and people splash on beach and jump off their boats. Whatever.
Ferry returning at 4:30. I sat down, had a strawberry smoothie and waited to head back
Athens can be done in a day...two at most. If you come to Greece, plan for more Island hopping. Today was great, tomorrow I head out for two days on the island of Paros. Athens..take it then leave it.

Travel Greece: October 2, 2021
Day 19. Not unlike many other days, we started with breakfast at our hotel. Then we all visited the Heinrich Schliemann Museum for its numismatic collection.
It has over 500,000 coins, medals and gems. There was also a contemporary art exhibition there celebrating the resistance of the Ottoman persecution.
The details of this historical home were exquisite. Unfortunately due to Covid, the self-guided headsets are not in use so we relied on reading signs near the displays.
After our museum visit, Tommy headed back to the hotel to take care of some more tour details. There were so many upsets on the trips coming up due to Covid. It was really difficult.
Jill and Bill went off on their own today while Toni and I walked to the restaurant next-door to the Gyro Place for a Greek salad and Ouzo. We then did more walking along the stores on Athinas Street. We stopped for a coffee and pastry and then went for a manicure and much-needed pedicure.
Afterwards, we all met up including Tommy‘s friend Pat Felch at a restaurant that was coincidentally across the street from the nail salon.
The food was excellent and the service just as good. The name was it Athinaikon Restaurant. Tommy especially like the seafood soup. It had fish stock with a mild white fish. Grilled veggies were great. Bill enjoyed the squid (cuttlefish) grilled. He thought it was fresher and more tender here than Nopresto by the marina.
But even though both restaurants use the same flavoring Nopresto was tastier. We had quite a number of appetizers tonight.
There was Tarama it was very good. We had fried green balls like a keftethes, instead of meat, they were made with spinach or other greens.
Jill wasn’t crazy about her boneless baked lamb dish. Toni enjoyed her seafood saganaki dish and sauce. Pat Felch had some kind of rolled meat dish she thought was only OK.
My lightly fried shrimp were good. There was an appetizer that was a big hit. It was a Filo dough wrapped item serve with melted cheese and meat inside. This is a restaurant definitely worth revisiting. Number 34 Metropolis Street at the corner of 9 Petrock East St. Centavo, Athens. 210–325–2688.

Hellinikon: thoughts
Hellinikon is a vast area in the southern suburbs of Athens where the old airport used to be. After the international airport was relocated, the area was used for sports venues during the Olympic Games in 2004 and then as a refugee camp. The area  was eventually abandoned which essentially turned Hellinikon into an expanded dead land. There have been a lot of discussions for investments in the area throughout the years, which were delated because privatization has traditionally not been well received in Greece (I both agree and disagree with this negative sentiment) but recently the land‘s been bought by LAMDA Development which belongs to Greek multi-billionaire Latsis family. LAMDA Development has publishized all the plans for the urban regeneration and the environmental upgrade of the area for quite a while. Despite not being familiar with the region, I was always interested in the developments of the Hellinikon issue and I thought it would be fun to just lightly rate the benefits and flaws of the huge project. And it is huge indeed, I recently found out the whole region is three times as big as Monaco and twice as big as Central Park in New York. Or, maybe, Monaco is that small. Well. Nevermind.
The Marina
Tumblr media
Features:
A marina that accomodates 337 moorings up to 80 meters.
A 6-star hotel in front of the marina.
Retail shops and entertainment venues.
Thoughts:  Okay, a marina is not a big deal, especially amongst the (how-many?) marinas that Attica has. To my understanding, this one is going to be a large and particularly upscale one. Entertainment venues are to be expected but I am a bit sceptical about the retail shops. However,  YES to the 6-star hotel. I don’t mean Greece should be flooded with 6-star hotels - not at all - but the country relies on tourism so much that having at least one self-acclaimed 6-star hotel is probably good for the... prestiggggge XD
Rate: 4 / 5
The Integrated Resort
Tumblr media
Features:
high-rise hotel
state-of-the-art Gaming and MICE facilities
Thoughts: A luxe hotel just behind the 6-star hotel? Is there a crying need for it? I’m not that against it being high-rise and a Casino though. The Casino in Loutraki is somewhat far and the Casino in Mt Parnetha doesn’t cater to sea lovers. And this one will surely be a brand new posh thing so if you want to lose your money by the sea, this will be your new dream place I guess lol
Rate: 4 / 5
The Marina Residential Tower
Tumblr media
Features: a high-rise tall building with 200 apartments
Thoughts: It sounds stupid and unimportant but I actually like this one. If non-Europeans read that, well long story short Greece (and most of Europe) does not have skyscrapers for reasons that are associated with the region’s historical monuments. But if this building is not visible in the horizon from the Acropolis (most likely, it’s quite far), then I like it and I am all for it.
Rate: 4,5 / 5
The Beach
Tumblr media
Features: free-access 1km long beach with 50 m average width
Thoughts: A beach in Greece, a drop of water in the ocean. However, it will be free-access (who would save them from the wrath of the nation if it wasn’t? XD) and it’s surely a long beach (I still prefer our trademark coved bays though.) I can’t think of negatives, it’s what you’d expect.
Rate: 5 / 5
The Aquarium
Tumblr media
Features: the new “world class” Aquarium, some sources say it will be the largest in Europe and part of it will be underwater
Thoughts: The only decent aquarium Greece has is in Crete island and still it cannot compete with the good aquariums around the world. Should Greece, a country so deeply associated and dependent on the sea, lack a proper eligible aquarium? Okay, it depends on what someone thinks of aquariums. If it’s more like what you’d call a wildlife sanctuary, I support it. Let’s take for granted that it will fit all criteria for health care, endangered species preservation (when needed) and ideal conditions for the hosted sealife as well as have primarily an educational purpose. The site says that the Aquarium will complement the existing Ocean Centre of Research & Technology. It sounds hopeful and sensitive.  If these are the actual designs, I freaking love them.
Rate: 5 / 5 just don’t disappoint me make it good and eligible
The Seafront Area
Tumblr media
Features:
Beach villas
Luxury hotel
Marina for small boats
Thoughts: ...What...more luxury hotels?!  I assume the large marina will be suitable only for big boats (for super rich dudes) but somewhat rich dudes have rights too. This corner is kept for somewhat rich dudes.
Rate: 2 / 5 it would be 1 for pointlessness but we stan somewhat rich dudes
The Exhibition Precinct
Tumblr media
Features:
transformation of the old airport into an Aviation Museum
renovating the Eero Saarinen building of the old airport to an Exhibition Center
Thoughts: The renovation is definitely needed but I don’t know what good a vague exhibition center will do for Athens with its already existing exhibition centers. Maybe I am wrong though, this whole area aims to be upscale so they ‘ll probably have plenty exclusive exhibitions. The Aviation Museum is a HUGE thumbs up, I love that they respect the history of the place and they incorporate it to the new project.  BTW this sculpture in the design is from another country and I hope they WON’T bring something like this here too, no offense
Rate: 4 / 5
The Metropolitan Park
Tumblr media
Features: supposedly the biggest park in Europe and one of the biggest coastal parks in the world and will include lakes, arable land (?!), thematic regions and interconnection with all other areas.
Thoughts: This is of course necessary at the least. Athens needs some greenery badly. Urban areas lack large parks. I hope it will indeed be as expanded as they claim. I also hope Latsis will have a guard in every corner though. Urban green places sadly don’t have a lot of luck in Greece and I am already pessimistic.
Rate: 4,5 / 5 because of my pessimism
The Sports Facilities Complex
Tumblr media
Features: what the title says
Thoughts:  I don’t know, I technically can’t be against sports facilities but what Athenian will get out of their way to reach Hellinikon to play sports... IDK I may be thinking with my provincial mind. Obviously, they target wealthy tourists more than Greeks anyway which is what irritates me.  It says they will host professional teams and international events though. They will also restore the Olympic facilities that are located there which was absolutely necessary. Hmmm I don’t know, I am as indifferent for this as I am for sports in general, so maybe don’t listen to me.
Rate: 3,5 / 5
The New Urban Innovation and Business Centre
Tumblr media
Features:
educational facilities and research institutions
student campus and housing
model business park
residential developments
hypermarkets, biggest shopping center in Athens
hotels
Thoughts: Yes, yes, ok, meh, no, no. The thing with the hotels starts becoming a joke. Does Athens need a bigger shopping center? I would replace the shops and hotels with simply more park. The campus and research institutions save this.
Rate: 3 / 5
The Mall at Vouliagmenis Avenue
Tumblr media
Features: Another Mall
Thoughts: The site calls it “Shopping Center” so I just hope it is the aforementioned one, simply in a detailed description because I don’t dare imagine two massive shopping centers next to each other. Again, it’s a no, even if things work a little differently in Athens, overall I would say that Greek people and “hypermarkets” and malls don’t get along very well. Greeks always prefer their local shops downtown or even the posh shopping streets but hardly ever the Malls. (Or, at least, a curse seems to have fallen on nearly all these shopping complexes in Thessaly.) Thus, this shopping center that is quite far from Athens downtown and also has Glyfada’s upscale shops right next to it (and the future retail shops in the new Marina) will have a lot of competition to face from the locals. Too much ado about nothing.
Rate: 1 / 5 one point if they make it pretty
Let’s see if they pull that off...

Lamda Development presents Τhe Ellinikon coastal front
and Marina Galleria, the new destination of the Athens Riviera
The architectural plans and design of Marina Galleria were undertaken by the Japan based architectural firm Kengo Kuma & Associates
The Ellinikon coastal front redevelopment will be completed within five years.
Lamda Development Coastal Front Beach:
Athens, 20 July 2021 – Lamda Development presented today its plans for the redevelopment of The Ellinikon coastal front and the new landmark at the Marina of Agios Kosmas, Marina Galleria, that are set to transform the Athens Riviera into a top international destination. This is Lamda Development’s second digital presentation updating the public on the progress of the iconic Ellinikon project.

“Connection to the sea is a key element in our planning for The Ellinikon. Therefore, the redevelopment of the coastal front is in itself a stand-alone project that we have prioritised. Our vision is for The Ellinikon coastal zone, which is 3.5 kilometres long, to become the most beautiful part of the Athens Riviera and a popular destination for recreation, sports, relaxation, and entertainment for all, as well as a new commercial and tourist attraction that will give Greece a growth boost,” said Lamda Development CEO, Mr. Odisseas Athanasiou.

Marina Galleria: a new generation destination by the sea
Marina Galleria (www.theellinikonmarinagalleria.com) will offer visitors a multifaceted, high-end shopping, gastronomy, and entertainment experience reflecting current international trends.

At 22,000 sq.m., it will be hosting leading fashion brands, some of which will have their own retail space in Greece for the first time, as well as well-established Greek designers. It will also offer many high-level gastronomy options by well-known Greek and international chefs, as well as a wide range of cultural and recreational events.
Designed by the internationally acclaimed architectural firm Kengo Kuma and Associates, with an impressive portfolio of projects around the world, Marina Galleria will be one of The Ellinikon landmarks, an architectural reference point at the new marina of Agios Kosmas, and an attraction for visitors from Greece and abroad.
“Thanks to its premium location, its high-end architecture, and its connection with the water element, as well as the multifaceted experience it will offer visitors, Marina Galleria will be a new-generation destination, unique by Greek standards,” stressed Lamda Development Chief Development Officer for Marina Galleria, Ms Melina Paizi.
“For the design of Marina Galleria, we had the unique opportunity to combine different elements and materials from the Greek landscape through a modern design approach. Thus, a new typology was created: a state-of-the-art commercial destination, open to the sea, the sun, and the Greek landscape”, noted Mr. Aris Kafantaris, Architectural Design Director at the Kengo Kuma & Associates architectural firm.
The most beautiful coastal front in Europe
Lamda Development’s planning for the redevelopment of the Ellinikon coastal zone includes several iconic landmarks and destinations, highlighting the area’s unique natural beauty and the significant growth potential of the Athens Riviera as a leading, year-round, global tourist destination.
Among others, a new 1 kilometre free-access sandy beach will be created on the coastal front, where city residents and visitors can swim, exercise, and be entertained. Lamda Development’s planning also includes the redevelopment at the marina of Agios Kosmas, which will be upgraded in terms of both capacity and services, as well as the development of two luxury hotels in collaboration with TEMES. Marina Tower, the green high-rise of unique architecture designed by the leading architectural firm Foster + Partners, will also be in the same area.
The coastal front will be connected to the Metropolitan Park and the rest of The Ellinikon’s areas and landmarks via a 50-kilometre network of walking and cycling paths, as well as public transportation.
Lamda Development’s goal is to transform The Ellinikon and the Athens Riviera into a world-class high-quality destination which adds value to neighbouring municipalities, to Attica and Greece, and creates new beautiful, green open spaces for citizens to exercise, relax and enjoy themselves by the sea.
