General Motors (GM.N) on Thursday made a counterproposal to the union representing its U.S. hourly workers in a bid to avoid a costly strike, but United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain called the offer "insulting."
The largest U.S. automaker said it offered workers a 10% wage hike and two additional 3% annual lump sum payments over four years in its offer to the union ahead of the Sept. 14 contract expiration.
Last week, Ford said it had offered a 9% wage increase through 2027 and 6% lump sump payments, much less than the 46% wage hike being sought by the union. The UAW has said 97% of members voted in favor of authorizing a strike if agreement is not reached.
Fain, who represents 146,000 workers at the Detroit Three, said GM's offer was "an insulting proposal that doesn’t come close to an equitable agreement for America’s autoworkers.... The clock is ticking. Stop wasting our members’ time. Tick tock."
GM shares were down 1.3% in mid-day trading.
GM said the wage hike is the largest proposed since 1999. It is also offering a $6,000 one-time inflation-related payment and $5,000 in inflation-protection bonuses over the life of the agreement, along with a $5,500 ratification bonus.
Chrysler-parent Stellantis said Wednesday it planned to make a counteroffer to the UAW this week.
GM said that under its offer, current temporary employees will receive a 20% increase to $20 per hour wage and it would shorten the time it takes to get to the maximum wage rate for permanent employees - mirroring proposals from Ford.
GM President Mark Reuss said in a video posted on Thursday "we need a fair contract that both rewards our employees and protects the long-term health of our business."
A UAW strike that shuts the Detroit Three manufacturers could cost carmakers, suppliers and workers over $5 billion, Michigan-based Anderson Economic Group estimated.
With new car inventories tight, consumer experts have said that could translate into higher car prices - an important component of inflation.
Last week, the UAW filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against GM and Stellantis saying they refused to bargain in good faith.
The union's demands include a 20% immediate wage increase followed by four 5% annual wage hikes, defined-benefit pensions for all workers, 32-hour work weeks and additional cost of living hikes. GM is proposing to give employees an additional paid holiday.
The UAW also wants all temporary workers at U.S. automakers to be made permanent, seeks enhanced profit sharing and the restoration of retiree health-care benefits and cost-of-living adjustments.
The UAW said Ford's profit-sharing formula change would have cut payouts by 21% over the last two years.
J.P.Morgan on Thursday said supply chain disruptions from a potential UAW strike would cut new vehicle production, drive up used car prices and put pressure on margins in the personal auto insurance business.

Tsaritsa Eleonore of Bulgaria
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for @abigaaals royals with your birthday challenge, my birthday is 22 august which also happens to be Tsaritsa Eleonore's birthday.
She was born in 1860 in Prussia in Castle Trebschen as Princess Eleonore Caroline Gasparine Louise Reuss-Köstritz. her father was Prince Heinrich IV Reuss zu Köstritz. Eleonore was also a first cousin to Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. When Eleonore was 17 she was engaged to Russian nobleman Mark Alexandrovich Ospenyi, but he got wounded in the Russo-Turkish war soon after and then died from his wounds. Eleonore got married to Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria in 1908 after the death of his first wife. Since Ferdinand already had heirs, he wasn't interested in marrying someone expected attention or affection, so the marriage was distant. Eleonore devoted her time to raising her step children and to care for the Bulgarian people. This shone through during the Balkan war and the first world war when she worked tirelessly as a nurse, it was said she had a great gift for relieving suffering. During the last years of the first world war she became seriously ill, she died on 12 September 1917 at the age of 57.

SONGS TO WRITE YUSUKE:  whether  it  be  melodies  that  give  you  inspiration  for  your  muse  or  songs  that  get  you  into  the  writing  mood   —   pick  10  songs  you  find  that  give  you  the  urge,   the  drive,   or  the  creativity  to  write  your  muse   !!
Tumblr media
1. Battle scars - Lupe Fiasco, Guy Sebastian.
“These battle scars, don’t look like they’re fading. Don’t look like they’re ever goin’ away. They ain’t ever gonna change.” Despite this giving me break up vibes, those lyrics gives me so much Yusuke vibes post the dark tournament. He’s dealt with two ‘deaths’ in his life in one little instances and it’s really left scars on him. It was at the moment Yusuke truly felt as though he’s taken the time he’s spent with his loved ones for granted and he’d be damned if he doesn’t cherish them even more now.
2. No love - Eminem ft Lil Wayne.
“I’m giving no mercy mark my words, ain’t letting up, relentless I smell blood. Don’t give a fuck. keep givin’ ‘em hell, where was you when I fell and needed help up?” Definitely one of those early pre-season one vibes with this song. This song definitely helps me vibe with Yusuke’s life before he got his life together. Back where people hated him without TRULY knowing him, the time where Keiko was the only one that shows any public kindness towards him. (I know you cared about him too in your own way Kuwabara, you’re still the GOAT.)
3. Judgment - Ryu ga Gotoku Zero .
“Wow, Breakin’ the law Breakin’ the world 壊せ 切り裂けTenderness” This entire song gives me Yusuke vibes, THANK GOD for Yakuza 0 because this lil piece here screams vibes for badboys. Whether it’s Yusuke during the start of the series or at the end of it, this song definitely reflects him in some way or another imo.
4. Daydream Generation.
“I know how it hurts when you been betrayed by people you trust, the pain never fades.” This is cheating considering it’s the ending of the entire series. I think this song could very well vibe with the entire cast to be honest but I always get a vibe to write as Yusuke when this pops on the playlist.
5.Old School - Overkill.
“They said that this would never last, we never gave a fuck!” This ENTIRE song is just attitude. It really vibes well with his flippant feelings for authority. Not to mention the name of the song is really tight if you’ve seen Yusuke in the ring.
6. Enemy - Imagine Dragons.
“Pray it away, I swear I’ll never be a saint no way.” I can honestly drop any single of imagine dragon, this one though..that ONE little sentence at the end is what gets me. It’s like Season 1 all over again, probably just those few minutes after he’s got ran over by car-chan. It’s kinda like ‘I got nothing but bad in me’ type of feeling when I hear it but OH he found out how wrong he was.
7. What about the rest of us - Action Bronson & Joey Badass.
“Lord have mercy, it’s the world we live in was only design for somebody wealthy.” To me this song speaks of how alienated Yusuke feels from the world around him. Like the song says with the prior statement, to him it really does feel like the world was made for the wealthy when people like him mean less than dirt to the ones with money.
8. Stand Proud - JJBA
“All right now. All right now. All right now 誇りのBullet (JOJO! JOJO! JOJO!)” This song itself is just hype. It was the chapter in the series I didn’t overall liked BUT I’d be damned if I don’t admit their openings were CLEAN. Either way just when this chorus hits I could literally that spark I need to get to my drafts. This is actually one of the songs that does play when i’m doin’ early morning drafts.
9. Headlights - Eminem ft Nate Reuss
“If the plane goes down, or if the crew can’t wake me up. Just know that I’m alright, I was not afraid to die.” This entire song is literally a redemption song. It gives me fees for both Yusuke and Atsuko, their relationship wasn’t perfect but there was still enough love there to fix them.
10. Dead and gone - T.I
“I turn my head to the east, I don’t see nobody by my side, I turn my head to the west, still nobody in sight.” This song right here is a letter to how much Yusuke’s friends and family shaped him by the end of the series. The old him was literally ‘dead and gone’.

Andretti and Cadillac announce plans to enter Formula 1 | 2023 F1 season
Andretti has formally announced it intends to submit an entry to compete in the Formula 1 world championship in collaboration with General Motors brand Cadillac. The two companies plan to submit an Expression of Interest when the FIA begins the process which was announced by president Mohammed Ben Sulayem last week. Michael Andretti – former F1 driver, IndyCar champion and son of 1978 F1 champion Mario Andretti – has long sought an opportunity to enter F1. Andretti Global announced the construction of a major new headquarters in Indianapolis last year. Its F1 operation would be based in the US with a “support facility” in the UK. “We are continuing to grow Andretti Global and its family of racing teams and always have our eyes on what’s next,” said Andretti. “I feel that we are well suited to be a new team for Formula 1 and can bring value to the series and our partners, and excitement for the fans.” Andretti’s team has previously worked with GM in IndyCar, when it used Chevrolet engines in 2012. “I’m proud to have GM and Cadillac alongside us as we pursue this goal,” Andretti continued. “GM and Andretti share a legacy born out of the love of racing. We now have the opportunity to combine our motorsport passions and dedication to innovation to build a true American F1 bid.” The FIA is yet to confirm how its process for admitting new teams will be structured. Andretti said “we will continue to follow procedures and steps put forth by the FIA during the evaluation process. “In the meantime, we continue to optimistically prepare should we be fortunate enough to have Andretti Cadillac formally approved as a Formula 1 contender.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free Ben Sulayem immediately responded to Andretti’s announcement on social media. “I welcome the news of the Cadillac Andretti partnership and the FIA looks forward to further discussions on the FIA F1 World Championship Expressions of Interest process,” he said. Cadillac has not previously competed in Formula 1. The announcement did not specify whether the carmaker intends to produce its own power unit or brand the operation. GM president Mark Reuss said the car making giant “is honoured to team with Andretti Global on this historic moment in racing. “We have a long, rich history in motorsports and engineering innovation, and we are thrilled with the prospect of pairing with Andretti Global to form an American F1 team that will help spur even more global interest in the series and the sport.” F1 has grown its audience in America in recent years and will hold three rounds in the country this season. “Cadillac and F1 both have growing global appeal,” Reuss continued. “Our brand has a motorsports pedigree that’s more than a century in the making, and we would be proud to have the opportunity to bring our distinct American innovation and design to F1.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2023 F1 season Browse all 2023 F1 season articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

Striking United Auto Workers have a long wish list of concessions they want from Detroit's big three automakers, including higher wages, shorter work weeks, and more benefits. So far, those demands have proven too big of an ask. Despite thousands of striking workers disrupting production at key auto manufacturing plants, a deal is yet to be struck between workers and Ford Motor Company  (F) - Get Free Report, General Motors  (GM) - Get Free Report, and Stellantis  (STLA) - Get Free Report, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep. Ford on Oct. 4 announced bad news impacting many workers who have yet to walk the picket line. Many are likely disappointed.United Auto Workers (UAW) members and supporters on a picket line outside the Ford Motor Co. Chicago Assembly Plant in Chicago, Illinois, US, on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023. The United Auto Workers expanded its strike against General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. to more assembly plants, but the union spared Jeep maker Stellantis NV from additional walkouts after a last minute breakthrough. Photographer: Taylor Glascock/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesBloomberg/Getty ImagesStriking workers take a toll on Ford MotorsThe Great Financial Crisis resulted in bankruptcy for General Motors. Ford narrowly escaped that fate thanks to loans it had taken out in 2006 and concessions from auto workers, including a decision to use company stock to finance half of its new retiree health care trust. The U.S. auto industry has changed a lot since then. The once embattled automakers are pocketing record profits. Workers believe it's time for them to step up by offering a record contract. The UAW's wish list includes a return to pensions for new workers that were eliminated in the Great Recession, a 32-hour workweek, and cost-of-living increases. They're also angling for pay increases of up to 40%.Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis have said meeting those demands would put them at risk of losing out to competitors at a critical time for the industry. Electric vehicles are quickly displacing conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Without significant investments, the big three may struggle to catch up to EV pioneers, including Tesla  (TSLA) - Get Free Report, the market share leader.More Business of EVs:EVs account for about 7% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. However, analysts believe they'll represent over one-quarter of all vehicle sales by 2026. "Our competitors across the country and around the world, most of whom are non-union, will waste no time seizing the opportunity we would be handing them," wrote General Motors' President Mark Reuss in a recent op-ed for the Detroit Free Press. In mid-September, Ford's Chief Executive Jim Farley claimed meeting the UAW's demands could put the car company on a path to bankruptcy, hamstringing efforts to keep pace with the likes of Honda  (HMC) - Get Free Report, Toyota  (TM) - Get Free Report, and others plowing big money into hybrid cars and trucks and EVs.He isn't alone in that worry. Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on his social media company X (formerly Twitter), that the UAW's wish list is bad news for the big three.UAW President Shawn Fain takes issue with that conclusion, noting that meeting worker demands would have left Ford, GM, and Stellantis with billions in profits over the past few years. In the first half of 2023, the three automakers reported about $21 billion in profit, according to Fain. The impasse is starting to be costly for Ford, causing it to make tough decisions impacting many workers.Following a recent offer to UAW workers that included higher pay, a faster track to top wages, and higher contributions to worker retirement accounts, Ford announced on Oct. 4 that it would lay off employees because of disruptions caused by striking workers. Specifically, 400 workers at its Livonia transmission plant and Sterling Heights axle plant in Michigan were given the bad news not to report to work. Including workers previously laid off, the total number of workers sidelined by Ford is above 1,300.
Ford says that its latest decision directly results from reduced production at Chicago Assembly Plant. Workers went on strike there on Sept. 29. The resulting dip in vehicle production, including the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, has reduced the need for auto parts manufactured at the two plants.Laid-off workers won't be able to collect unemployment benefits. However, they will receive assistance from the UAW. Forget Ford – Sign up to see what stocks we’re buying now

Review: New 2025 GMC Sierra Pickup Truck
Tumblr media
The GMC Sierra 1500 is actually a synonym for "Chevrolet Silverado." Under all that chrome and paint, the two full-size pickups have comparable mechanical prowess, despite their distinct exterior designs.
The Sierra 1500 is available as a single cab, double cab, or four-door crew cab, just like the Chevrolet 1500. The bed length ranges from 5.8 to 8.2 feet. A base turbocharged four-cylinder, a hefty Duramax diesel, a 5.3-liter V-8, and a 6.2-liter V-8 are all available as powertrain options.
The Sierra 1500 ranks highly on two significant rankings. It has a maximum conventional towing capacity of 13,200 pounds, making it one of the strongest pickups in its class.
Even though the Sierra offers a large touchscreen and more leather than ever before in its cockpit, it cannot match the Ram 1500's interior elegance.
Introducing New Sierra
The 2025 GMC Sierra will likely usher in the next iteration of full-size pickup trucks. Notably, the vehicles of the next generation will feature new powertrains.
During a recent GM Investor Event, General Motors President Mark Reuss discussed the automaker's efforts to boost fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the forthcoming next-generation pickups.
Reuss stated that new powertrains with significant enhancements in efficiency and performance would be included. The next update to our engine portfolio for our next-generation full-size vehicles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10 percent compared to our current offerings.
In addition to updated powertrain options, the 2025 GMC Sierra will feature all-new exterior and interior designs and a completely new platform.
The next-generation GMC Sierra will not use the same platform as the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Hummer EV Pickup, which use GM's Ultium battery technology and Ultium drive technology.
Transmission, Engine, and Performance
The Sierra is offered with four distinct engines, two transmission options, and either rear- or four-wheel drive. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder producing 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. It has an automatic transmission with eight speeds.
There are two available V-8 engines: a 5.3-liter with 355 horsepower and a 6.2-liter with 420 horsepower. A torque-rich diesel six-cylinder engine produces 460 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
On our test track, a fully-equipped Denali Ultimate with a 6.2-liter V-8 accelerated to 60 miles per hour in just 5.4 seconds. The Sierra 1500 is also available with adaptive dampers and rims measuring up to 22 inches in diameter.
While the Sierra lacks the off-road prowess of the high-flying Ford F-150 Raptor, it does offer two off-road-specific models. The robust AT4 model features a 2.0-inch suspension lift and other trail-worthy features.
The AT4X shares several features with the Silverado ZR2, such as advanced spool-valve dampers, electronic-locking front and rear differentials, additional skid plates, and 18-inch black rims with gnarly off-road tires.
A steel front bumper with a winch, AEV 18-inch rims, and steel rock sliders are included as part of the AT4X AEV package. The Sierra has a rougher ride than the Ram 1500, but it maneuvers exceptionally well due to its responsive steering and limited body roll.
Production Release
We expect the 2025 GMC Sierra to debut in the United States in the autumn of 2024. The following manufacturers are anticipated to continue producing the Sierra 2025:
GM Flint Assembly, located in Flint, Michigan, United States of America (HD)
(LD) GM Fort Wayne Assembly in Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States of America.
Mexico's GM Silao Assembly (LD)

General Motors Executive Says UAW Demands Threaten Manufacturing
Tumblr media
“Exclusive News, Data, and Financial Market Insights: GM Executive Warns Against UAW Demands”
In a recent video statement released by General Motors‘ (GM) global head of manufacturing, Gerald Johnson, concerns were raised regarding the demands presented by the United Auto Workers union. Johnson emphasized that these demands come with significant costs that could potentially jeopardize GM’s ongoing manufacturing momentum. In an effort to avoid any disruptions, both Johnson and GM President Mark Reuss expressed their desire for a fair resolution without resorting to a strike. However, the specifics of GM’s economic proposals to the UAW were not disclosed.
85% of General Motors customers are auto workers
For businesses closely tied to the automotive industry, such as the Motor City Sports Bar & Grill in Warren, Michigan, the negotiations hold significant importance. Approximately 85% of their customers are auto workers, and they are cautiously optimistic that a strike can be averted, despite past experiences with such disruptions.
The potential consequences of a strike extend far beyond individual businesses. Across Michigan’s economy, various industries are preparing for the potential impact. According to the Anderson Economic Group, just 10 days of a strike could result in a staggering $5 billion loss for the U.S. economy, with $859 million in wage losses. Justin Winslow, president and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association, expressed concerns about the potential impact on disposable income and the ripple effect it could have on the hospitality industry. As negotiations continue, the stakes remain high for all parties involved.
George Glassman of Glassman Automotive Group is also hoping against the strike
Winslow says they’re following the talks as well, with the auto industry a major driver in Michigan’s economy. He says their industry also felt the effects during the UAW strike against General Motors in 2019.
“Some restaurants felt it very acutely and there were temporary layoffs in the industry during that time period,” Winslow said. “It was less severe sounding, frankly, in reality than what we’re bracing for right now. So we’re having communication with members to be prepared for the worst.”
On the flip side, George Glassman of Glassman Automotive Group is also hoping against the strike but with selling mostly non-domestic cars, his business could see more traffic if Big Three production slows.
“If there are no cars on the ground and people need to purchase or lease cars, they’re going to find a place to get them,” Glassman said. “I’m hoping a strike doesn’t happen because I don’t think it will be productive for either side.”

Thanks for your support – Paul & Mark. VIEW FROM SPREUERBRÜCKE, LUCERNE 1 – OLD TOWN Lucerne’s Old Town is a fairy-tale setting of medieval squares, historic buildings, and narrow streets. The small heart of the city is car-free and perfect to explore on foot. While you will spend much longer soaking up the atmosphere on your Lucern visit, you only need 1-2 hours to stroll through most of the Old Town. Here are some of the highlights of the old town: Kornmarkt // Kornmarkt was the grain market from 1356 to the late 19th century. The square contains the city’s most beautiful building, the town hall (Rathaus). A 14th-century clock tower adorns the Italian Renaissance-style building with a typical Swiss roof. Hirschenplatz // Another beautiful square, ornate frescoes adorn the buildings in Hirschenplatz. Many are saints immortalized to protect the buildings, while others are advertising for the businesses. Keep an eye out for the prancing cherubs holding rings on the jewellery business. Weinmarkt // The Wienmarkt was the fish market until the middle of the 16th century. The Weinmarkt fountain from 1481 features an octagonal basin and a limestone sculpture. Mühlenplatz // Mühlenplatz is the largest of Lucerne’s squares. It’s a great place for dinner and drinks in a local setting a short distance from the very touristy riverside area. DORNACHERHAUS MÜHLENPLATZ RATHAUS CLOCK TOWER 2 – CHAPEL BRIDGE & WATER TOWER The Chapel Bridge, also known as Kapellbrücke, is one of the most famous landmarks in Lucerne. It’s a covered wooden footbridge that diagonally spans the Reuss River. Built in the 14th century, the Chapel Bridge is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. Paintings by local painter Hans Heinrich Wägmann, depicting the history of the city, adorn the inside of Kapellbrücke. A fire in 1993 destroyed some of the paintings and much of the bridge. The rebuild restored all the charm to Chapel Bridge. The Water Tower was erected in the late 13th century, almost 100 years before the bridge. Lucerne’s ruling class used the four floors inside the building as a treasury and a prison. The 30-metre octagonal building is one of the most photographed landmarks in Lucerne. Tips for visiting – The Water Tower is not open to the public, but it’s free to stroll across the bridge any time of day. It’s particularly stunning at sunset when the colourful buildings in the background glow a golden hue. KAPELLBRÜCKE 3 – MUSEGG WALL The Musegg Wall is an 870-metre medieval wall with 9 towers that surround the old town of Lucerne. The walls were built in the 14th century to protect the city from invaders. They are considered some of the best-preserved defensive walls in Switzerland. Strolling on the wall
and enjoying panoramic views of the city nestled under the surrounding mountains is a unique thing to do in Lucerne. Several of the towers are open to the public between April and November from 8 am to 7 pm: The Männli Tower takes its name from the iron figure of the Männli (little man) crowning the top. The Heu Tower stored hay and gunpowder until 1701 when a lightning strike caused an explosion that ripped the tower apart. The Zyt Tower has a clock face large enough for fishermen to read it from the lake. The Schirmer Tower marked the divide between the entity of Lucerne and the countryside. The remaining towers, Nölli, Luegisland, Pulver, Allenwinden Dächli are visible from various points throughout the city. MUSEGG WALL TOWERS FROM LUCERNE 4 – SWISS MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT The Swiss Museum of Transport is the most-visited museum in Switzerland and a great thing to do in Lucerne in winter. The massive collection includes historic cars, planes, simulators, interactive media, and learning experiences. Day passes to the Transport Museum include access to the Swiss Chocolate Adventure. Learn about the chocolate-making process and watch the experts prepare individual goodies for you to try. Another great attraction at the Transport Museum is the IMAX screen – the largest in Switzerland. Additionally, Media World is a virtual reality experience featuring adrenaline sports. The museum is the perfect family-friendly thing to do in Lucerne. DETAILS | SWISS MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT hours – 10 am to 6 pm (summer) / 10 am to 5 pm (winter) | cost – CHF 62 (day pass) / CHF 35 (museum + Media World) DAY PASS // ENTRY TICKET 5 – LION MONUMENT The Lion Monument, or Löwendenkmal, commemorates the Swiss Guards killed during the French Revolution. The sculpture shows a lion dying with a spear in its side, carved into a cliff made of sandstone. The lion is covering a shield that has the fleur-de-lis symbol on it, which stands for the French monarchy. Beside him is another shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland. An inscription under the sculpture tells how many soldiers died (760) and lived (350). The monument is not without controversy. Many people oppose it because it represents the loss of Swiss lives in support of a foreign power. Nonetheless, set in a small English Garden with a tranquil pond outside the old town, it’s a wonderful free thing to do in Lucerne. LION MONUMENT 6 – JESUIT CHURCH ST FRANCIS CAVIER The Baroque Jesuitenkirche occupies a striking position on the banks of the River Reuss. The Jesuit order were active in the Catholic fight against Protestantism in Switzerland. Good favour got them invited to Lucerne in 1573 to establish a college. The mayor funded the enterprise from his private wealth. Construction of the church aligned to the college commenced in 1667 but it remained unfinished at its consecration in 1677. The building was modelled on the Church of the Gesù in Rome and the Baroque style was one of the first of its kind in Switzerland. Inside, the church is beautiful. Decorated with golden rococo stucco, sculptures, and paintings, the space is a pristine dazzling white. The highlights are the high altar, the organ, and the painted ceiling depicting scenes from St Francis Xavier, the Patron Saint of Lucerne. The complex is a vintage swimming experience that originally had separate bathing areas for men and women.
Today it includes swimming pools, diving boards, water slides, and sunbathing areas. It’s down the river from the Chapel Bridge and it too has survived for centuries. Occupying a less dominant position on the river, Spreuerbrücke is often less busy, particularly late in the afternoon. Painted triangular panels inside the bridge form a “Dance of Death.” This is an artistic style from the Middle Ages depicting death represented by people from all walks of life. The original 67 paintings date from the early 17th century, today 56 survive. Each of the paintings include the coat of arms of the donor and other notable members of Lucerne society. The bridge is a great location to photograph other landmarks in Lucerne. Capture the Musegg Wall, the Jesuit Church, and the Chapel Bridge from this prime location. There is no fee to walk across the Spreuer Bridge and it’s open all the time. SPREUERBRÜCKE 12 – CHURCH OF ST LEODEGAR (HOFKIRCHE) There has been a church on the site of Hofkirche since around the 8th century when there was an abbey to Saint Maurice. The current building was constructed between 1634 and 1639. It incorporates two Romanesque towers; all that remained from a fire that destroyed the previous church. It’s now considered one of the most important Renaissance churches in Switzerland. Yet, the simple and plain interior feels at odds with the commanding exterior. A carved pulpit and choirstalls in rich wood add warmth. The ostentatious black marble and gold altar stand out against the muted tones of the walls. You don’t need long at St Leodegar’s but it’s a nice part of Lucerne overlooking the old town. It’s also on the way to the Lion Monument, a few minutes’ walk away. CHURCH OF ST LEODEGAR WHAT TO EAT IN LUCERNE? One of the most popular dishes in Lucerne is the Luzerner Chügelipastete, a puff pastry filled with veal and mushrooms in a creamy sauce. On the sweet side of things, Zuger Kirschtorte is a cherry liqueur-infused cake. Our pick of the deserts was Luzerner Kugel, a chocolate truffle filled with a hazelnut cream center.
