Written during a time of immense personal anguish and turmoil for Franz Liszt, this set of Variations on a Theme of Bach (S180) put into music everything the aging «Abbé» felt. Taking Bach’s hautnign theme from the Cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, which was reused for his seminal H Moll Messe, Liszt weaves a magic web of chromatic, dark chords. Most touchingly, he ends on a chorale, Was Gott tut das ist wohl getan, the same way Bach would have done. It is worth pointing out that Liszt considered Bach’s B Minor Mass the “pinnacle of Western civilisation.” It may be presumptuous to say, but I think the great Bach himself would have been at least astonished by this work.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor (German: H Moll Messe, h being “B” natural in German musical notation). Performed by the Netherlands Bach Society. 

Although the Mass in B Minor was probably not performed in Bach’s lifetime (he completed it in around 1749), it is today considered as one of Bach’s greatest works. More than that, it is considered as one of the greatest choral works in Western music. Forkel, one of Bach’s first biographers, and Haydn both owned copies. Liszt called it the pinnacle of Western civilisation. 

In the comments’ section, people still express awe and wonder at the scope of this work. Many movements stand out: the Kyrie Eleison, Et Incarnatus Est, Crucifixus, Et Resurrexit, Sanctus, Dona Nobis Pacem. Bearing in mind that Bach adapted the themes for most of this work from previous pieces, their resonance and splendour here highlight his musical genius. His themes could be adapted for any use, and as a composer with exacting standards, he would often revise and improve his work.

Regardless of how historically-informed performances dominate Baroque repertoire today, all can appreciate this vintage interpretation of Bach’s incredible Mass in B Minor. Karl Richter faced criticism for his style of performance, but his recordings are revered by many. Some incredible emotional works, once again proving the magnificence of this work by Bach.

Segments from Bach’s monumental Mass in B Minor. These three pieces: Et incarnatus est, Crucifixus, and Et resurrexit come from the Nicene creed. They speak of Jesus’ incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection. Bach used some plaintive Renaissance-style themes inside Et incarnatus est, but advancing it with his own understanding of dissonant harmony. The ensemble makes for a dramatic retelling of Christian doctrine. It’s an astounding work.
