I think it's so funny how much antizionists in Germany NEED to act like criticizing Israel is an evil forbidden act that gets you cancelled immediately (including Deborah Feldman's ridiculous Guardian article which had the unironic subtitle "The pro-Israel political consensus has shut out any dissenting voices – as I found in a TV debate with the vice-chancellor"... like no offense but if you were actually shut out you wouldn't be on national TV lmao)

it's just this weird persecution fetish that's like. totally detached from reality. and it's so annoying because it's literally AfD level "you CAN'T SAY ANYTHING THESE DAYS!!!!" trying to shut down the conversation whenever it comes to actually constructively trying to talk about Israel.

Am vergangenen Freitag gab es in der Reihe „Talk im DKH“ ein Novum. Erstmals fand die Veranstaltung nämlich als Freiluftveranstaltung auf einem Platz hinter dem Dietrich-Keuning-Haus statt. 7. If you’re not a native English speaker, how much do you read in your native language versus how much you read in English? How do you feel about that?

I predominantly read in English, mostly because I spent so much time on the English-language internet so that’s where I find most book recs, a lot of especially nonfiction books are not available in translation and if I were to read a translation, I prefer the ones that have the original text on one side and the translation facing it so I can scour for nuances and observe the craft of translation itself.

I don’t feel too good about the fact that most of what I read in German is just newspapers. Occasionally I make an effort to read in German, but what I go for there is older poetry quite often, which--while keeping my creative language skills sharper--still doesn’t solve the issue of me paying too little attention to the country I actually live in. Luckily I’ve recently seen quite a lot of German nonfiction coming out about stuff I care about, like the entanglement of the German police with the far right, or stuff like Max Czollek’s essay Desintegriert euch! arguing against the common ideas in Germany of what integration in Germany--and especially Jewish life in Germany--should look like.

16. The book that you don’t dare reread for fear it won’t be the same any more

Mostly books from my childhood, tbh. I read a book called Lina bei den Wölfen once and I found it again at a yard sale, and I remember being fascinated and horrified by it but I haven’t cracked it open again. Mostly, though, I figure the person I was then got what they got out of it and that can never be undone, and now I’ll get something else if I read it again, and if I’m intrigued by the something else then why not reread. I reread most books I like.

22. The book you finished even though you hated it, and the reasons why

I usually read four or more books in parallel, picking up whatever I’m more interested in that moment, and then I start another one and years later I notice I didn’t finish a book or other because it just got moved back on the shelf when I was cleaning up. So I don’t tend to finish books I don’t like. I don’t even finish all the books I do like

26. Do you read reviews of books? Before or after you read the books themselves? Why? Why not?

I like reviews of books and literary criticism. I get something very different out of a discussion than when I actually read the book, so I treat reading reviews and reading fiction as different activities (with the connector that after a fascinating review I might add another book on my to read pile). Partially the use of reviews is that it’s quick, that I know some reviewers with similar interest, and that it’s hard sorting books by the thematic aspects I’m interested in -- so there is a fucktonne of lit I would never have discovered without reading reviews. Partially I think interpretation is fascinating, whether of poetry or art or novels, and I adore seeing what people can draw from and construct out of a text.

Also, there are review podcasts. I like Death // Sentence who review good books and talk philosophy and also play metal in the intermissions, I don’t even own a television who do bad books but some (like the slug horror!) are intriguing, and Horror Vanguard who do horror movies but it’s still reviews of fiction, whatever. More review podcasts are Podside Picnic and anarchySF but I’ve only recently found them so I can’t vouch yet

Eine Veranstaltung der Dialogperspektiven im Rahmen der Langen Nacht der Ideen 2021 des Auswärtigen Amtes

PERSPEKTIVEN AUF PLURALISTISCHES ERINNERN. EINE LANGE NACHT ZUR COALITION FOR PLURALISTIC PUBLIC DISCOURSE (CPPD)

Wer erinnert wann, wo, wie und an wen? Wessen Erinnerung wird sichtbar gemacht – durch staatliche Förderung, durch Ausstellungen, Denkmale, Gedenktage – wessen nicht? Diese Aspekte tragen entscheidend dazu bei, wie sich eine Gesellschaft selbst erzählt, wer dazugehört zu ihrem Wir. Und diese Fragen müssen immer wieder neu verhandelt werden: Erinnerungskultur ist dynamisch und politisch. Sie enthält eine Deutung von Geschichte, eine Interpretation von Gegenwart, Visionen von Zukunft, Identitätsangebote.

Staatliche Formen des Erinnerns in Deutschland und Europa verfehlen vielfach ihren Zweck. Statt Katalysatoren für Veränderungsprozesse im Sinne der pluralen Demokratie zu sein, verharren sie in statischen Praktiken. Sie bilden die vergangene und gegenwärtige Pluralität der Gesellschaften nicht ab.

Dieser Zustand erfordert eine Wende: Weg von der Homogenisierung europäischer Erinnerungskulturen hin zu einer Anerkennung der Vielfalt deutscher und europäischer Erinnerungsmomente und ihrer Träger*innen. Kein Gleichsetzen, kein Relativieren, sondern: Stärkung durch Pluralisierung.

Dialogperspektiven hat ein neues Netzwerk von Intellektuellen, Künstler*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen initiiert: die Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD). Die CPPD will Erinnerungskultur neu denken und gemeinsame Strategien und Visionen für ein pluralistisches Erinnern entwickeln.

Wie das gelingen kann, darüber sprechen Max Czollek und Jo Frank mit sechs Mitgliedern der CPPD. In 1:1-Gesprächen à 20 Minuten stellen Aladin El-Mafalaani, Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard, Noa K. Ha, Gianni Jovanovic, Lea Wohl von Haselberg und Esra Küçük ihre Visionen für neue, pluralistische Erinnerungskulturen vor.

last song: "Electric Heart" by Neon Trees. I was listening to the Neon Trees playlist when i did my laundry because it's so upbeat and it helps me to actually get through that tedious, horrible task

last movie: "Futur Drei", I think the English Title is "No Hard Feelings" (which I absolutely love??!! helloo?????!) It's this stunning German indie movie about a German-Iranian gay guy who has to do community service at a refugee detention center and meets two siblings who live there. it's queer, it's touching, it's visually so stunning, and it's also apparently from the same people who made druck s5/6 (which i still haven't watched) - so maybe that's something? anyway, everyone should watch this movie

currently reading: "Desintegriert Euch!" by Max Czollek, a German non-fiction book about what it means to be a jew in Germany today, and about the fake idea that Germany has sufficiently worked through its own history and is now a state free of antisemitism, and free of the need for more reflection and repentance. It's an interesting read and I'm learning a lot - I'm also reading it at a rather slow pace bc this is the first non-fiction I've read in a long time (except for uni stuff) and I've never been good at processing that. but it's so well written and easily accessible that i'm surprised by how easy it is this time.

currently watching: on all levels except physical: the terror. i've binged s1 a few weeks ago and i can't stop thinking about it, but i've got no time and energy for a rewatch yet. i'm also watching star trek discovery s3 with a friend, and i started critical role s1 from the beginning a week ago while working on a sewing project, and i still have a couple of episodes of leverage s5 left to watch - i'm just not quite in the right mood for it rn, so i'm saving it for a little later.

currently craving: a swimming pool and a vegan iced latte maybe? it's too hot ugh. some focus and motivation would also be good - I wanted to use my free time today to write fanfic, but now my brain is all foggy and that's kinda rude of it :(

Inhalt: 

Wer ist in diesem Land ein*e gute*r Migrant*in? Was bedeutet Integration, wenn Deutschland ein strukturelles Rassismusproblem hat? Müssen sich Migrant*innen innerhalb dieser Strukturen integrieren? Wann gilt jemand als integriert? Wenn er*sie ein*e gute*r Migrant*in ist? 

Max Czollek versucht in seinem Buch die aktuell rassistischen Verhältnisse zu skizzieren. Dabei kritisiert er die fehlende Ent-Nazifizierung und die heutigen Folgen dessen. Lange hieß es ,,Nie wieder’’ und nun dürfen Mitglieder der AfD wieder offen antisemitisch sein. 

Was kann die Lösung dessen sein? Czollek meint, wir (nicht weiß-deutsch gelesene Menschen) könnten uns des-integrieren bedeutet: den Erwartungen der weißen Mehrheitsgesellschaft nicht folgen, sie mit unseren Worten und Taten irritieren und somit das Narrativ stören, dass sich bestimmte Gruppen integrieren müssten. 

Meine Meinung: Empfehlenswert (4/5)

Das Buch gibt meiner Meinung nach einen guten Überblick darüber, wie Deutschland sich beim Thema Rassismus macht. Gleichzeitig versucht es den Leser*innen zu vermitteln, wie widerständige Situationen aussehen könnten. 

Einige Kapitel waren sehr zäh und trocken geschrieben. Zudem hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass auch auf einer nicht-politischen Ebene geschrieben und erläutert werden könnte, wie ,,Desintegriert euch’’ aussehen könnte.

Dennoch fand ich das Buch persönlich sehr lehrreich und würde es auch meinen Freund*innen weiterempfehlen.
