CD Projekt Red gambled off a mountain of good will and lost with Cyberpunk. It’s been covered to death at this point so I’m not going to go into it too much. Basically neon coated transphobia orientalist trope glitch game is gross and busted. I’ve only watched clips from friends and a few followers on social media struggle to get anything from the game other than schadenfreude and regret. They got their money back but I get it. The final product is proof that the industry’s obsession with appeasing the most vitriolic gamers is not sustainable or ethical and it doesn’t produce a quality product. Even after being in crunch for so long it’s just bland to watch. The pacing is awful even without technical issues and it looks like the story is clunky and uninspired. Aesthetically it looks like someone binged a lot of standard 1990-2000x cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell and Ready Player One’d just spot welded Blade Runner and Johnny Nnemonic together. Seeing footage of the gun play, the lack of a third person POV or any inventive weapons really killed any remaining sliver of interest I had in the game. Just in terms of gameplay: if you’re gonna feature nudity in a game with cybernetics you need concealed gun cocks or sphincter mounted noise cannons. Literal Ass Blasters! RP as a zealous cultist of Slaanesh! What about the Oppai Missile System from the Mazinger series? White phosphorus titty missiles! Or a Terminator style chest nuke? Y’know I think I just want cyberpunk game with the immersive RP potential of Skyrim and an array of Saint’s Row style silly and destructive weapons in a more modern cyberpunk setting. That or a cyberpunk beat em up with weird pickups. Or idk just play Observer or throw on some Occam’s Lazer and make up your own story. Would be cool to see more modern cyberpunk / dystopian sci-fi from a perspective that isn’t rehashing decades old libertarian sci-fi tropes.
