It’s Day 5 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Masks. Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society - Eye On You (About Time, 1980) That stunning Tlingit piece on the cover is more of a headdress than a mark, but I think it fits the theme quite nicely. The harmolodically inspired “free funk” within was equally stunning, featuring interplay between all band members that ranged from tender to fiery. And what a band: Jackson on drums, Billy Bang (violin), Byard Lancaster and Charles Brackeen (saxes), Vernon Reid and Bern Nix (guitars), Erasto Vasconcelos (percussion), and Melvin Gibbs (bass) - wow! #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #jazz #funk #freejazz #harmolodics #ronaldshannonjackson @vurnt22 @melvingibbs https://www.instagram.com/p/CF-tT-VgD_t/?igshid=19jwik0q5njb6

Favorite tweets: I feel your pain. I left Anthony Jackson off my bass list, which was a head-slapper. btw -- this cut right here is still one of my faves by JPB. When New Jack Swing makes its' (inevitable) comeback people will stop sleeping on the "Saints and Sinners" album https://t.co/d2PBaJGRJV— melvin gibbs (@melvingibbs) July 6, 2018

Favorite tweets: I saw Albert King play right before he passed. He had a JC 120 amp on stage set up to look like he was using it. But he ACTUALLY was using a Princeton amp he had hidden. He didn't want people to know how he got his sound. Me, @Tacumasong and Amin Ali are like that for Bill #facts https://t.co/7l1uj4uoSA— melvin gibbs (@melvingibbs) May 17, 2018

Favorite tweets: check my comment about Paul Chambers. It applies to Ron too. Will IS the quintessential NY session bassist, but not really an influence.as far as "session bass" goes:Babbit, yes... Joe Osborne, Carol Kaye, Gary King, Gordon Edwards, Wilton Felder --- they are all foundational https://t.co/HeoNaoPuFv— melvin gibbs (@melvingibbs) May 17, 2018
