It’s Day 9 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Stab Me In The Ear. Spear Of Destiny - Flying Scotsman b/w Africa & The Man Who Tunes The Drums (Rome/Epic, 1983) At first I was looking for something with a spiky sound, but then I remembered this band. Originally a spin-off from Theatre Of Hate, they were one of the bellwethers of post-punk’s transformation into new wave, new romantic, and goth. Not a bad record, but I never felt the need to invest further in them. The squares of double-stick foam tape on the poster reveal, however, that at one time I was at least enough of a fan to display the poster in my dorm room...but there was a LOT of gray cinder block to cover! #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector https://www.instagram.com/p/CGI821PA9bW/?igshid=ypldwnhuq2xw

#SpooktacularVinylChallenge Day 3 : Witchy Woman I went a bit artsy with this one, and grabbed a bunch of stuff laying around my house. I've included three picks for this, and I HIGHLY recommend every fucking one of them. All three of these albums are rippers, and you should buy them if you don't already own them. From Left to right: 1. Myrkur – M(2015), 2. Coven; Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls(1969), 3. Astral Witch: Astral Witch(2018) and Astral Witch: Love(2019). @myrkurmyrkur @jinxdawsonofcoven @astralwitchband #WitchyWoman #AllofThemWitches #HalloweenVInyl #ColoredVinyl #ColoredLP #Witchcraft #WitchyAesthetic #Teeth #Runes #BaalzeBunny #HailThyself #DeadFlowers #DriedRoses #DentalCast #Bones #Skulls #AnimalSkulls #Tarot #Esoteric #Occult #EverydayIsHalloween #Records #Vinyl #mypretties #RecordCollection #girlswhocollectvinyl #Records #vinyl #vinylettes #MyHouseIsProbablyHaunted https://www.instagram.com/p/CF5uHAtM0zM/?igshid=p6jrlt6668fk

It’s Day 8 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Orange You Happy? Father John Misty - Pure Comedy (Sub Pop, 2017) Happy? Why shouldn’t I be happy? It’s all a comedy isn’t it, pure comedy, in fact, nothing to do but laugh and laugh and l a u g h... Actually, I am mostly happy, even under the circumstance, thanks to family, friends, and albums like this one, full of brilliant music in glorious packaging. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @fatherjohnmisty @subpop #indierock #folkrock #bestof2017 https://www.instagram.com/p/CGGYD-lgbyy/?igshid=8ptl350p4wzf

It’s Day 31 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Happy Halloween. Howard Shore - The Fly OST (Varese Sarabande, 1986) Bryan Ferry - Help Me b/w Broken Wings (EG/Virgin, 1986) Here’s a double dose of Musca Domestica* madness courtesy David Cronenberg, Shore, and Ferry. Scary as heck and packing an unexpected emotional wallop, the movie was an instant horror classic, as was the soundtrack. Ferry’s song was produced by @nilerodgers and finds them both at the peak of their 80’s powers. Spine-tingling! P.S. This challenge was so much fun! Thanks for hosting and I’ll see you around. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @bryanferry_roxymusic #howardshore #soundtrack #soundtracksonvinyl #horrorfilm #thefly #happyhalloween https://www.instagram.com/p/CHBhsuQgBis/?igshid=39xe49k2hwc5

It’s Day 30 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Demon Disco. Public Image Ltd. - Death Disco b/w And No Birds Do Sing (Virgin, 1979) Both songs are only slightly different than the versions on Metal Box (where they appear as Swan Lake and No Birds) but at the time I was a PiL completist and had to have it! Say what you want about John Lydon now, in 1979 he was in a rare zone where avant garde impulses connect to deep emotions, creating timeless art of nearly crushing power. Of course, the brilliance of Keith Levine’s guitar work and Jah Wobble’s bass cannot be overstated. No amount of political careering or careening can squelch the achievements of early PiL! #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @virginrecords #pil #publicimageltd #postpunk #artrock https://www.instagram.com/p/CG-OxLtAXEg/?igshid=p1zqthcll0o3

It’s Day 29 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Final Chapter. David Bowie - Blackstar (Columbia, 2016) Raise a hand if you preordered this in November 2015, got it on release day, listened in awe all weekend multiple times each day...and then: where the fuck did Monday go?? 😢 The greatest final album ever - and my number one album of the 2010’s. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @davidbowie #blackstar @columbiarecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CG8kqkmg4o8/?igshid=1so8cdvjtm4ey

It’s Day 28 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Harvest. The Clientele - Alone And Unreal (Merge, 2015) I don’t usually buy compilations, but this had an extra song and came with a download of rare early recordings. It also includes Harvest Time, one of the most perfect songs from this most perfect of bands. There’s also a gorgeous version by Alasdair MacLean’s side project, Amor de Dias. Here are the lyrics so you can sing - or sigh - along next time you hear it! Bats from the eaves go shivering by Scarecrows watch the verges of light I hear a choir on the heath at night But no one’s there It’s harvest time It’s harvest time Look at them working though nobody’s there The rolling moon the heavy air Carrying the sheaves of the haunted year Through summertime It’s harvest time It’s harvest time #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @theclienteleband @mergerecords #dreampop #indierock https://www.instagram.com/p/CG6JEjCAnM1/?igshid=txxjrqdbi7mm

It’s Day 27 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Candyman. The Velvet Underground - S/T (MGM, 1969/71) Missing Lou Reed today, on the seventh anniversary of his death, and though the exquisite Candy Says would work for this prompt. Though this is the third VU album, it was the hardest to find in the 80’s but well worth the hunt! From that opening ballad to the propulsive wonders of What Goes On to the intimate mysteries of Jesus, it’s a lifelong journey that starts the first time you listen. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #loureed @loureedofficial #thevelvetunderground #60smusic #riploureed #mgmrecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CG3R4xbA2KK/?igshid=17ovcq8tv5ods

It’s Day 26 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Prince Prospero. Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare (Atlantic, 1975) Vincent Price had a legendary acting career and became one of the notable interpreters of the characters of Edgar Allen Poe, such as Prince Prospero in The Masque Of The Red Death. He also entered pop culture through music - but Thriller wasn’t the first major album to which he lent his dulcet and malevolent tones. On this, the eighth album released under the name “Alice Cooper” (and first where Vincent Furnier *became* the character), Price did a spectacular spoken-word intro to The Black Widow. Excerpt: “Man has ruled this world as a demented, stumbling fool long enough...soon you’ll have to pay allegiance to THE BLACK WIDOW!” No cackle required on this one... Featuring classic Bob Ezrin production and the twin guitars of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, the album is a hard rock epic! #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @alicecooper #hardrock #70smusic #vincentprice @atlanticrecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CG0ycd0AAJX/?igshid=169sy1sfsf77m

It’s Day 25 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Bubba Ho-Tep. Charles Earland - The Great Pyramid (Mercury, 1976) Plenty of pyramid power on this jazz-funk-disco-soul-r&b-pop epic! And stellar musicians, from Gabor Szabo to Harvey Mason to Marshall Jones, bass player from the Ohio Players. My wife pronounced it “suave” if you need more impetus to track it down. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #charlesearland #jazz #funk #soul #disco #fusion #randb @mercuryrecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CGyIqUzAQhk/?igshid=1548paca9xltm

It’s Day 24 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: The Killer Returns. Derek & the Dominos - In Concert (Polydor, 1973) Discussion of today’s prompt led my son to ask me if I had any records by people who killed someone and I immediately thought of the tragic tale of Jim Gordon, who was one of the leading drummers of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Increasingly dire bouts with the symptoms of schizophrenia led him to retreat from his career and in 1983 he murdered his mother. He recently turned 75 and is currently serving his time in a medical and psychiatric prison in California. It’s also sad that these recordings are what a lot of people think of in relation to Derek live. I have several blazing bootlegs that put these sluggish performances to shame. Maybe one day the true story will be told and only add to Gordon’s stellar musical legacy. #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #derekandthedominos #ericclapton #70smusic #bluesrock #classicrock https://www.instagram.com/p/CGvrzshgQ_z/?igshid=17ip8212uusp7

It’s Day 22 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: End Of The World. XTC - This World Over b/w Blue Overall (Virgin, 1984) This elegiac anti-nuclear tune, taken from The Big Express album, came in yet another clever package. The glue holding the postcards finally dried up so I got a little creative with the shot. Each postcard depicts the same devastated city but with different names. Message received, Mr. Partridge! It’s Day 21 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: The Stuff. Bryan Ferry - Bête Noir (Reprise/EG, 1987) The suave Mr. Ferry doesn’t just have “The Stuff,” he has “The Right Stuff”! Or at least he has a song by that name on the brilliant follow up Boys & Girls, which is even better. The song was co-written by Johnny Marr - one of the best things he’s done outside of The Smiths! #octobervinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector @bryanferry_roxymusic #bryanferry @repriserecs #80smusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CGoEMaNg7kb/?igshid=22cg0e5x0d1k

It’s Day 19 of the #spooktacularvinylchallenge by @j_roorda_photos: Skulls, Maybe Bones. The Specials - Ghost Town b/w Why? & Friday Night Saturday Morning (2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1981) Skulls, bones...and ghosts. Plus one of the greatest grooves of all time. Taken as a whole, the 12” highlights songwriting strength with one song each from Jerry Dammers, Lynval Golding, And Terry Hall.
