Oklahoma voters rejected a state question Tuesday to allow for the recreational use of marijuana, following a late blitz of opposition from faith leaders, law enforcement and prosecutors.
Oklahoma would have become the 22nd state to legalize adult use of cannabis and join conservative states like Montana and Missouri that have approved similar proposals in recent years. Many conservative states have also rejected the idea, including Arkansas, North Dakota and South Dakota last year.
Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt and many of the state’s GOP legislators, including nearly every Republican senator, opposed the idea. Former Republican Gov. Frank Keating, an ex-FBI agent, and Terri White, the former head of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, led the “no” campaign.
“We’re pleased the voters have spoken,” said Pat McFerron, a Republican political strategist who ran the opposition campaign. “We think this sends a clear signal that voters are not happy with the recreational nature of our medicinal system. We also think it shows voters recognize the criminal aspects, as well as the need for addressing mental health needs of the state.”
Oklahoma voters already approved medical marijuana in 2018 by 14 percentage points and the state has one of the most liberal programs in the country, with more than 2,800 licensed dispensaries and roughly 10% of the state’s adult population having a medical license to buy and consume cannabis.
On Tuesday’s legalization question, the “no” side was outspent more than 20-to-1, with supporters of the initiative spending more than $4.9 million, compared to about $219,000 against, last-minute campaign finance reports show.
State Question 820, the result of a signature gathering drive last year, was the only item on the statewide ballot, and early results showed heavy opposition in rural areas.
“Oklahoma is a law and order state,” Stitt said in a statement after Tuesday’s vote. “I remain committed to protecting Oklahomans and my administration will continue to hold bad actors accountable and crack down on illegal marijuana operations in our state.”
The proposal, if passed, would have allowed anyone over the age of 21 to purchase and possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, plus concentrates and marijuana-infused products. Recreational sales would have been subjected to a 15% excise tax on top of the standard sales tax. The excise tax would be used to help fund local municipalities, the court system, public schools, substance abuse treatment and the state’s general revenue fund.
The prospect of having more Oklahomans smoking anything, including marijuana, didn’t sit well with Mark Grossman, an attorney who voted against the proposal Tuesday at the Crown Heights Christian Church in Oklahoma City.
“I was a no vote because I’m against smoking,” Grossman said. “Tobacco smoking was a huge problem for my family.”
The low barriers for entry into Oklahoma’s medical marijuana industry has led to a flood of growers, processors and dispensary operators competing for a limited number of customers. Supporters had hoped the state’s marijuana industry would be buoyed by a rush of out-of-state customers, particularly from Texas, which has close to 8 million people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area just a little more than an hour drive from the Oklahoma border.
Michelle Tilley, campaign director for Yes on 820, said despite Tuesday’s result, full marijuana legalization was inevitable. She noted that almost 400,000 Oklahomans already use marijuana legally and “many thousands more” use it illegally.
“A two-tiered system, where one group of Oklahomans is free to use this product and the other is treated like criminals does not make logical sense,” she said in a statement.

Save Writing NSW
An open letter to Create NSW and the NSW Minister for the Arts
We, as writers and active members of the literary community, were dismayed by Create NSW’s decision not to grant Writing NSW Multi-Year Organisations Funding in their latest round, despite the fact that Writing NSW was recommended for funding.
This decision demonstrates the ongoing devaluation of literature within the Australian arts funding landscape. We know literature is the most popular artform in the country, with 87% of Australian reading some form of literary work in any given year, yet in this round Create NSW offered only 5.7% of their ongoing funding to literature organisations.
The decision to defund Writing NSW carries a particular sting. Writing NSW is the leading organisation representing writers in a state with a long literary history and one that is home to many of Australia’s leading publishers, writers, literary agents and other core participants in the Australian literary industry.
Writing NSW is an important stepping-stone for writers at the beginning of their careers, providing high quality professional development programs, and it also employs emerging and established writers to deliver and lead these programs. For decades the organisation has provided high-quality courses, seminars, workshops, festivals, events, grants and literary prizes. In putting such programs at risk, Create NSW is jeopardising both an entry point and an ongoing support system for writers.
Macquarie University research shows that the average income of an Australian author from their practice is $12,900. The current economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic makes the situation of writers even more precarious. Writing NSW offers key employment opportunities to writers, through teaching, publication, speaking engagements and both curatorial and judging positions. The removal of these opportunities will mean many writers will not be able to maintain the other income streams that support their writing careers.
The removal of $175,000 from a single source would be catastrophic for any business – not-for-profit or otherwise. For a government funding body to enact such a blunt economic withdrawal in the midst of a global pandemic and without concern for the economic flow-on effect to hundreds of industry professionals is deeply distressing.
We call on Create NSW to reverse this decision and ask them to reveal their future strategies for arts funding and how they plan to rectify the disparity in funding between other funded artforms and literature.
As writers, we will never accept the loss of a vibrant, essential cultural network such as Writing NSW.
What you can do We invite anyone affected by Create NSW’s decision – writers, publishers, literary agents, illustrators, readers alike – to co-sign this letter. You can copy and customise this letter to draft a version from your own point of view on this matter to send to a Member of Parliament.

Tagged by @yourfavouritedoll ! Thank you, I love doing these~
Name: Alice Fiddle.
Zodiac sign: Capricorn, Monkey, Birch.
Height: Five foot six, maybe a smidge over.
Hobbies: Reading, drawing, doll art, sewing, baking... I also write and sing but because I’m trying to make my living off those I’m not sure they count as hobbies.
Favorite color: Sage green for objects and to look at, though I mostly wear black, red, and purple.
Favorite book: I have several favourite books, including but not limited to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (also Looking Glass), Good Omens, Monstrous Regiment, and Interview with the Vampire.
Last song I listened to: Final Distance, Utada Hikaru. For a good dose of middle school nostalgia and because its music video was a big aesthetic inspiration for the writing project I’m trying to plan out.
Last movie I watched: Do stand-up specials count? If so, Kid Gorgeous. I don’t watch a lot of movies these days... I think the last actual film I watched was Get Carter, an old gangster film with Michael Caine that my parents put on. Weird to watch something like that, simultaneously admiring how it practically spawned a genre and is a masterpiece of filmmaking and at the same point hating it for all the gratuitous violence against women....
Inspiration/Muse: Oh, so many... the Victorians in general, especially the 60s-80s, Angela Carter, Emily Carroll, Lewis Carroll, cats and bats and wolves, Terry Pratchett, Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name by Tess Stone, Kate Bush, Florence Welch, The Decemberists, Vesta Tilley....
Dream Job: Writing, singing, songwriting! I’m doing my best! (There’s also a part of me that still wishes I could be a film actor but that ship has pretty much sailed.)
Reason behind my username: It comes from the Michelle Shocked song “Prodigal Daughter (Cotton Eyed Joe)”, which takes the biblical story of the prodigal son, who left his home and squandered his fortune but was welcomed with open arms, and uses it to make a point about how much men can get away with in society and how little women can. The Alice comes from Wonderland, obviously, and it’s the name I go by online.

Thoughts on Discovery 2x04
Those who care might notice I didn’t post anything about last week’s episode of Star Trek Discovery. I decided to follow the “if you can’t say anything nice” approach. I feel less charitable this morning so I’ll just say that after two half-decent episodes opened the new season, I consider episode 3, “Points of Light”, to be the worst single episode in the history of the Star Trek franchise, dethroning the previous “winner” which was “Shades of Grey”, a budget-saving flashbacks episode that was the limp noodle that served as the finale for TNG’s Season 2 nearly 30 years ago and moving the infamous TOS episode “Spock’s Brain” down to third place.
By contrast, last’s night’s episode 4, “An Obol for Charon” was much better, though it created an unexpected issue for me. I’m not going to go into heavy plot details, but I’ll put a spoiler break here anyway.
As I say, the episode was orders of magnitude better than episode 3, because except for touching on the ongoing search for Spock subplot and another one involving Tilly’s mind being influenced by a grumpy fungus (I’m not making that up), it was a return to the standalone episode format that worked so well for Trek in the past - including episode 2 of this very season. (Oh, and while we do hear a few words in their language in an amusing scene involving the Universal Translator, the Klingons are thankfully absent.)
For me the highlight of the episode was the opening scene with Rebecca Romijn making her debut as Number One, Pike’s second in command on the Enterprise (previously played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry back in 1964). Her scene is only about 2 minutes long, but we learned more about her in those 2 minutes than we learned about most of the Discovery’s bridge crew over an entire season (and this isn’t due to her being a legacy character - we learned little about her in “The Cage”). Her chemistry with Pike is terrific and I want to learn more about their professional and personal relationship. (Oh and we also get a line of dialogue that was clearly inserted to address the technology issue in the new series that’s been a thorn in a lot of fans’ sides. I laughed.)
The impact Number One made illustrates a big problem. You’ve got people hating Discovery for numerous reasons I won’t go into. I am not a Discovery basher, but I am disappointed by it, and last week’s episode nearly made me walk away simply because of how awful it was (I realized that with one or two exceptions the episodes I dislike the most on Discovery involve the Klingons, but last week’s episode was just across-the-board bad except for maybe the last 60 seconds).
I want a Pike-Number One series with the revised Enterprise more than I’m interested in Discovery or the proposed Picard spin-off series.
It is not a good thing to have a character parachute in for 5 minutes, completely dominate the opening of the episode, and leave you wanting more of her and not the regular characters! (With the exception of Saru - without spoiling, Saru was amazing in this episode, even though the resolution was maybe a bit too old-school Trek.) This has happened before. Back in 2007 there was a very short-lived Bionic Woman remake series starring former EastEnders actress Michelle Ryan. She was fine as Jaime Summers and the show itself was OK, but in the first episode they introduced an evil bionic woman played by Katee Sackhoff (who was still appearing on Battlestar Galactica at the time) as a recurring villain - based loosely on Barney Hiller, Steve Austin’s bionic-powered nemesis on The Six Million Dollar Man. Katee’s character was far more interesting and dynamic than Michelle’s version of Jaime and people were saying Katee should have been cast as Jaime instead. It gave the show something of a mortal blow in the very first episode from which it never recovered.
While I’m not saying that a 5-minute appearance by Number One has destroyed any of the long-time characters on Discovery, it is not a good sign when (with the exception of Saru and maybe Tilley on a good day) she shows herself to be more dynamic than anyone else on the show - while enjoying a hamburger.

Cultivate presents Next (Au Suivant) – An on-line art exhibition…
Tumblr media
Welcome to Next, This time we’ll let the art do the talking first rather than clutter the top of the page with words or introductions, the intro is down at the bottom of the page, under the art and those oh so vital links. Please do scroll to the foot of the page for those all important links to all the artists, the links are the vital things…
Please click on an image to enlarge it or to run the slide show (and do please view it all on a decent sized monitor please, something more than a phone for gawdsake, surely the art deserves more than a tiny phone…)
We would really like to think, or maybe hope, just as we said last time, that it as simple as us just saying hey, here’s some art and here’s the links to the artists, off you go. We really would like to think it was that simple. This is the 15th on-line exhibition from Cultivate and we think, if we’ve counted it right, the 164th Cultivate art show in all. Once again this show is brought to you by Cultivate founders Sean Worrall and Emma Harvey, once again we invited 36 of our fellow artists to join us and once again we invite you to explore art and artists gathered from all over the land and indeed the globe. Artists from London, from all over the UK, from Poland, from Turkey, Brazil, Bulgaria, from the USA, from South Wales Manchester, Norfolk, from all over the place.
We like putting these shows together, we said this last time, it forces us to look at other people’s art a little more, it makes us explore people just a little more, we’re forced to get to know the artists who make the art just a little more than we probably would. Art excites and I hope this show does. It doesn’t really matter about the detail here, it doesn’t matter about the size or if the painting is in oil or the size of the print, not right here, not in terms of this show, for this is on on-line show, everything is flat, everything is the same size, the important thing here is that you react, that you think “oh, she looks like an exciting artist” or “I like what he’s doing, let me hit the link and find out more” – go follow their social media feeds, get on mailing lists and maybe see their art for real at some point in the future if you get a chance. This is about connecting things, connecting people, cross-pollination, I do hope this show is as simple as that. hopefully it really is as simple as that? Alright? Next? Shall we do it again next month? (sw)
LINKS TO THE ARTISTS, do please use those links now, that is the real point here, the pointing you in the direction of some exciting artists we hope you will go explore and connect with…
ALEX MANEA ANNABEL TILLEY ANNABEL WALKER ANNA-LISE HORSLEY ARTHUR ROBERTS BEN FENTON DELTA NA DOMINIKA SURMACZ ELOISE GOVIER EMMA HARVEY FIONA STIRLING GLENDA ZEPPA JEREMY MORGAN JESS PARRY KATHY BRUCE LAINE TOMKINSON LETICIA BARRETO LISA V. ROBINSON LORRAINE WHELAN MADELEINE STRINDBERG MARBLEU MARK BURRELL MARK PURVES MATT DOSA MELIKE MELISSA WRAXALL MICHELLE FIRMENT REID MILA RACZKOWSKA MONIKA LORINCOVA MONSUR AWOTUNDE NICK GRINDROD PATRICIA FIGUEIREDO RAFAL PODSOBINSKI SARAH LOUISE HAWKINS SARAH STRACHAN SEAN WORRALL SHANNON VERTIGAN TAMIR DAVID
And that was it, a ninth on-line show during these strange locked-down times we’e hopefully coming out of now.  A big big thanks to anyone and everyone who has visited the exhibition, a big big thanks to all involved in the show. None of the artists were charged a submission fee or anything else, everything here was done for free, all our time and effort.
And if you do feel like making a small donation – We bring all this art, music and underculture to you for free, we really don’t want to clutter up our pages with annoying adverts, no one wants that, but it does take up a lot of time, hours and hours of time. If you should feel like supporting Organ/Cultivate (for it is one in the same) by making a small donation to help keep all this flowing that would be delightful, thank you.
Coming next? Well maybe these shows are monthly now, there has now been one in January, February, March anw April, maybe we”ll do it again in May? Now if only the damn aloof elitist Arts Couuncil would see thia as being worthy of actual support, they do like ot tell us in priviate how valued it all is. Seems officially they prefer thosew who talk it to those of us who actually walk it. Let’s Create?
