New microSD format promises insane transfer speeds, better battery life
Today at MWC Barcelona the SD Association unveiled microSD Express, which will allow future mobile devices to consume and create content at even faster speeds. This new microSD card platform boosts incredible transfer speeds while consuming less energy used by previous formats.
The new format will be available in the flavors of microSDHC Express, microSDXC Express and microSDUC Express.
Like SD Express, microSD Express taps the PCIe interface to hit a maximum data transfer rate of 985 megabytes per second (MB/s). This is possible through the PCIe 3.1 and NVMe v1.3 specifications that live on a second row of pins. The SD Association expects the faster cards to consume less energy than traditional memory cards while still being backward compatible.
The fast data speeds could lead mobile device makers to rethink how they equip devices. Read and write speeds have long been a limiting factor for expandable memory, but with this new format, which is backward compatible, the data transfer happens nearly as quickly as built-in memory. With 5G data and cameras pumping out huge files, expandable memory could make a comeback.

La SD Association ha hecho pública en Barcelona durante el MWC 2019 la llegada de un nuevo formato para las tarjetas microSD, bautizado como microSD Express y que aparece como evolución de los formatos UFS y UHS anteriores, así como adaptación a tamaño “micro” del formato SD Express presentado en el pasado verano.
El whitepaper de este nuevo formato explica que las principales ventajas que trae son un menor consumo de energía en el dispositivo que la esté utilizando (un teléfono, una cámara…) y sobre todo unas velocidades de transferencia nunca vistas hasta ahora en una diminuta microSD.
HC, UC, XC
Este nuevo microSD Express llega en tres variantes: microSDHC Express, microSDXC Express y microSDUC Express. Igual que el mencionado SD Express, usa la interfaz PCIe y con ella logra velocidades de transferencia pico de hasta 985 MB por segundo, prácticamente un GB. Arquitectónicamente emplea PCIe 3.1 y NVMe 1.3 en una segunda fila de pines o clavijas.

Este avance tiene una implicación importante: con estas velocidades se equipara la velocidad de escritura de una microSD con la del almacenamiento flash interno, así que con esta nueva generación de tarjetas sería mucho más viable promocionar su uso, incluso con las velocidades a la que descargamos datos con fibra óptica… o con el inminente 5G del que tanto se está hablando en este MWC.
Este avance se puede interpretar como un paso natural respecto a lo presentado en julio para las tarjetas SD, pero también como una forma de hacer frente a la llegada de alternativas, como las NM Cards que abrazó Huawei y cuyo tamaño es aún más ridículamente pequeño que el de las microSD.
Este nuevo estándar microSD Express será retrocompatible, y ahora solo queda que los fabricantes de dispositivos adopten esta especificación, algo que no debería demorarse más allá de verano si se repiten los plazos de la última novedad de esta asociación.
