PSA: Samsung microSDs with A2 rating don't support Command Queuing (CQ) on Raspberry Pi 5
All Samsung microSD Cards with an A2 rating currently ( 12/2024 ) don't support the new SD Command Queuing feature of the Raspberry Pi 5 devices.
The CQ feature is enabled by default in the latest Raspberry Pi OS images ( tested on 2024-11-19-raspios-bookworm ) and needs to be deactivated for EVO Select, EVO Plus, PRO Plus and PRO Ultimate Cards.
Adding the line:
dtparam=sd_cqe=off
in the file
/boot/firmware/config.txt
does the trick.

The Tangara, and why I bought one
You might have seen the Crowd Supply link for the Tangara going around and thought "damn that's cool, but it's hella expensive". And well... Yeah it kinda is, during my search I've found three other touchscreen-less mp3 players ranging from 75€ to 130€. (Those, however, rapidly got nuked from my list since one has a really low storage limit, another had the brand using genAI and another had the previous USB system).
The Tangara is around 250$, plus 18$ of shipping and 50$ of taxes. A nice 320$ total, which is around 295€. More than twice the price of the most expensive mp3 player I've found on amazon. (and aouch my wallet.)
-
"An iPod is cheaper" well... Let's go through it, yeah?
An iPod, in France at least, is around 150€ if you want one in a good enough state, with cables and more than 30Go of storage (and have the sellers answer you). If you want an USB-C and Bluetooth, add 140€ (without shipping costs) for a solder-less kit. If you want to add a bigger storage, you'll have to spend at least 50€.
If you buy it already modded, with USB-C and Bluetooth, then it will be from 350€ to 570€ BEFORE SHIPPING.
And even then, once you've done all that, you'll still have to hack it and install a firmware like RockBox to be able to control storage above whichever max storage your iPod originally had (because of the hardware limitations).
Choosing an iPod is complicated because you have to check exactly which gen you need, and even then there are differences. It's a whole ass mess, and if you don't want to/can't solder, then you'll have to spend even more.
The Tangara? Everything is already in there and there are virtually no storage limit, you just need an SDXC card formatted properly. It was made with the goal of being easily fixable and customizable. The price of 250$ is definite. Bluetooth? It has it. 3.5mm jack? It has it. USB-C? It has it. Not just that, but it also has the entirety of its code hosted on Codeberg, all the 3D files for 3D printing a new case if you so wish, and people have already made modifications to it.
So by looking at it, the Tangara is better on the long run than an iPod.
-
"But Jeremy, the Tangara isn't a finished product, who would want to buy it?" well, didn't we all spend 60 bucks for ANCH, which wasn't a finished product?
Also, while it might not be a finished product software-wise (they haven't, for example, done anything about the Wi-Fi functionality yet), 1. the code is accessible by everyone so if you know how to code in C++ and Lua then go have fun, and 2. it is ACTIVELY being updated, and that by following what the customer needs (on top of following the different projects they already had.
The thing is that the Tangara is a project on Crowd Supply, which is like Kickstarter, but better. Crowd Supply has mad filtering of projects, and only accept projects who are already in the last phases and almost ready to ship. This means that they trust the people behind the project and the quality of said project.
If you need other elements about it, know that the team, CoolTechZone, have their own Tangara that they use on the daily. Not just that but, since we're on the "queer website", of the 5 people on the team, I'm pretty they're all queer and that at least 2 of them are also trans.
-
So, in itself, the Tangara is an investment. You might not buy a finished product, but you are buying an easily customizable music player.
The case is held together by four screws on each side, so easily removable if you break it, you can 3D print it easily AND CUSTOMIZE THE 3D PRINT, and the original case is apparently very easily dyeable. Not just that, but it's also using C++ and Lua, so you can make the themes you want if you know those coding language. (and Lua was created to be more easily to learn and manage)
It's also easily fixable, since every single parts can be bought by anyone (someone even made their own Tangara by themselves before the first batch was even sent).
Yes you have to format your SD card properly beforehand and yes you have to plug it in your PC and put it through the firmware updater, but it's not something new nor bothersome (you already went through the trouble of sorting your entire music collection anyway).
-
So why did I bought a Tangara?
First of, I wanted a dedicated device for my music, but the basic mp3 players don't have enough storage (only a few gigas and I'm already at 25 with only mp3s and a few FLACs).
Second of, if I were to have a dedicated device, I wanted it to be small and easy to use, and to have buttons. But most recent music players are just wifi only smartphone and that's a complete garbage take, like I can just keep my phone at that point, even if the DAC makes the sound better, it's still a second phone.
Third of, while I don't mind the bluetooth, I still wanted to have a 3.5mm jack on my device.
And of the iPod classic, the three amazon music players and the Tangara, the Tangara was the only one with everything I wanted, and having even a few things more.
-
I'm not going to tell you to go buy a Tangara, especially considering the price and the slight need to be able to understand tech.
But also don't go judge it badly solely based on the price. It's not a mass-produced device (the team only has five people) and it's made to last.
An interesting point is that, during my search of people talking about it in more detail, I haven't seen anyone regret buying it.
For more, go check out those two videos.

Three in One Post
Three Responses to One and Both for my Filipino Friend and A-Pal
First Response to my Filipino Friend
You know, people who start First grade have to be between 6 and 7 years old. And for 2nd, has to be between 7 and 8, and 3rd grade will be 8 and 9, maybe it might be either held back or something else. Because for me, if i got held back, i'll only get held back once even thought being held back sucks. Plus i only remember starting Preschool since 2001 which i was only 3 when i started which was since February of 2001. And after i did Preschool, i started Kindergarten at age 5, and my brother and sister started school by starting with Kindergarten because that's where i remember seeing kids start school. And sending them to Preschool can be a rare thing when wanting to have a child. And we'll hope we'll remember the people who passed on during the attack. Plus my sister just left to move to Colorado and she landed just fine.
Second Response to my Filipino Friend and my A-Pal
Now that the whole 9/11 thing is out of the way, let's focus on the Micro SD Card. I had a Micro SD Card with 128 GB When i needed more memory for my Switch. But ever since that, i had to get one since 2017 or 2018. And it was useful until my memory is almost full so i had to get one with 1 TB which is a lot of memory and for me to download some titles onto my Switch. Including for the games that would take up a whole lot of space. Plus i never really like how they would make games and they would take up a whole lot of space, but if you get like a extended memory like 1 TB or higher, then i'm sure you'll have plenty of memory to keep downloaded games as well as for save data, but i still put some games onto my cloud storage if i want to save memory.
And for Third Response to both my Filipino Friend and my A-Pal
If we're having Both bear day and grandparents day, i wanted to say this, my mom and i were heading to Costco Whole sale a few days ago, and not only that, my mom brought my grandfather a cake since i know how much he loves Costco Cakes more than my mom and i do, even if he either prefer Chocolate or Vanilla, but he always wants to get the Vanilla flavor since that's what he always likes. And i know some cakes usually have that says "Happy Birthday" on it, but they could've wrote down saying "Happy Grandparents Day" on it since it was Grandparents day after all. And for Bearo and Beara, then i'm sure Speedy and Penny will wish them a happy bear day and wanted to cuddle both of them while looking like Teddy Bears at the same time. Plus Bobby Bearhug will give them hugs too for the four of them.

Colin Hughes - 58
Or, just in case you need an alternative,
Moe Bumbercatch - 95
...I did both
Fic requests based on my Spotify Wrapped: Colin Hughes and Sleepyhead by Passion Pit
You were one inch from the edge of this bed, I drag you back; a sleepyhead
Light creeks the window. His pillow is soft and warm. The man he loves is sleeping next to him. Colin Hughes the day after West Ham.
"Hi," he whispers to Michael. His boyfriend. His boyfriend he kissed in front of the whole world with no fear. His boyfriend who loves him.
"Morning," Michael says, back pressing to Colin's chest.
"Was yesterday real?" Colin asks. He still doesn't quite believe it. The excitement, the love, the catharsis, the kiss. My god, what a kiss.
Fourteen year old Colin dated a girl named Clair simply to hide. She didn't deserve it. Colin was scared, and boys talked. 18 year old Colin told a guy he hooked up with if he ever told anyone he'd beat him to death. 23 year old Colin cried in the shower every day for a week straight. Yesterday, Colin kissed a man in front of the world.
"It was. Go back to bed. It's early," Michael says.
Colin smiles and leans in to kiss his boyfriends shoulder blade. He goes back to sleep. It's the first day of the rest of his life, and he's sleeping with his boyfriend in his arms. Light shines in the window. The bed is still warm. Colin Hughes is alive and finally free to be.

Fic request based on my Spotify Wrapped: Moe Bumbercatch and Experimental Film by They Might Be Giants
You’re all gonna be in this experimental film. And even though I can’t explain it. I already know how great it’s gonna be
"Do you always have to bring that everywhere?" Thierry asked him on the bus. "I feel like I'm the black guy having a foreboding moment in a horror movie."
"Good on you, Thierry," Jan butted in, "I didn't think you knew the word foreboding."
Thierry flipped him off. It was all captured on Moe's CX404 Handycam, which is his newest toy. Moe collected hobbies like a rich twelve year old collects Pokémon cards. Fast and with love.
"I'm making a film," Moe responded. "You're all in it."
"Like a documentary? I did not sign any release forms for you to sell my image," Jan said, the antagonist.
"It's a home movie, dickhead, and it's more an experimental documentary if I have to classify it." Moe knew a great deal about experimental documentaries, and was well acquainted with Barbara Hammer's filmography to boot.
"I expect residuals," Jan said. Prick.
Moe enjoyed having a camcorder with him when hanging out with friends. Something with limited storage that required setup. What images were worth capturing, and what story was he telling? Sure, plenty of the guys had taken videos of Jamie prank calling Roy from Richard's hotel balcony at 1 in the morning, but was that worthy of filming on his camcorder? Was that more the filmmaking of Jeff Tremaine than Barbara Hammer? He had to pick who he felt he aspired to be. Pick what to capture.
Isaac scrolling on his phone. Jamie spaced out. Jan and Richard arguing. Thierry sleeping on the floor between two vacant beds. Dani slowdancing while holding a pillow to his chest. Sam's smile while he notices he's being filmed.
His friends will take up 1.5 terabytes on his micro sdxc card. Jeff and Anders playing Ninja. Kukoč jumping on Winchester's back. Robbie filming him back with his phone. Paul pretending to be annoyed that Tom's asleep on his shoulder. Arlo trying to rap. Jan complaining again that he refuses to have his image in Moe's "dumb movie." Sam holding up a mirror so Moe could be in the movie too.
He didn't know what story he was telling. But he already knew how great it was.

fucks sake my 16 year old laptop has 3 USB ports, separate headphone and microphone jacks, VGA-out, a 2-in-1 SDXC/MMC reader, an ethernet port and a security lock slot, and a webcam with a built in mic (and its an okay mic too), while also having user-replacable ram and storage and an easily replacable battery (you just unlock 2 switches on the bottom, and it just comes off without any real effort) for £560 at launch (adjusted for inflation and rounded to the nearest £10, original price £325)
THAT WAS IN 2009
You know what, fuck it, I don't *want* some frivolous, artisanal, lighter-than-air computer with no customizability, no upgradeability, no reparability, no ports, and a lifetime of *maybe* 3 years if you're lucky. I want a fucking great BEAST of a computer that's designed to last a minimum of 50 years, with ports up the wazoo and optional drives for every kind of media! I want modular components that you can drop in a bog for a year, dry them off, and have them still work fine! I want them to make a noise like "ker-chunk!" when you slide them into place! I want a switch that you pull to turn it on! And I don't want software that constantly forces you to get a pointless, cosmetic "upgrade" every few months either! I want durability! I want longevity! I want satisfying haptics! I want Silicon Valley to go fuck itself!
