Meeting a water bear. 🌱
Basically wishing I could make myself tiny and get lost in some moss. So much beauty in little drops of water.

my finished quilt for my undergraduate thesis show! my art practice lately has been spending time with small things the average person doesn’t notice or know about. this quilt is entirely hand printed and hand stitched. show label below:
Little Glass Houses, 2023
Hand-dyed and unbleached muslin, cotton batting, mercerized cotton thread and block printing ink
Diatoms are a prolific single-celled microorganism, found in water and soil across the planet. This quilt "magnifies" them for the human eye in a composition that mirrors the view of a slide under the microscope. The cell walls of diatoms are likened to glass, as they are made up of a thin layer of transparent silica. Replaced by soft cotton and thread, this quilt gives them a dimensional quality that is lost under a microscope.

Jamming Inside
Worm-like Spirostomum ambiguum are millimeter-sized single-cell organisms that live in brackish waters. In milliseconds, these cells can retract to half their original length, generating g-forces greater than a Formula One driver experiences when cornering. How, researchers wondered, do these cells avoid shredding their internal structure with forces that strong? (Image and research credit: R. Chang and M. Prakash; via APS Physics)

Introducing my new spec bio sophont: martians!
They are a single celled organism based off of the real species, Stentor roeselii, known for its ability “to make choices.” Martians achieved sapience after the mass extinction of life on mars, all of which were microorganisms. On their own, they have the intelligence of a modern corvid, but when on groups and attaching their dendrite, they can become infinitely intelligent. One of these groups is known as a council and can range from 5 individuals to thousands.
