THE SITUATION:
As part of a Aquatic Center, the goal was to provide a LEED Gold Certified Building Design.
THE PROBLEM:
The challenge involved the space programming. The owner wanted to provide on-site power generation as part of the budget and obtain LEED points. The typical approach is to provide a photovoltaic system (solar panels). Still, for this you need a structure that provides the square-footage required for such a system. The architectural design did not allow for the necessary square-footage due to budget.
THE SOLUTION:
We came up with the design solution to provide a Microturbine to have on-site power generation and LEED points. The pool system consisted of having pool heaters. The pool heaters were eliminated, and the Microturbine took the pool heaters’ place as double-action duty. The Microturbine was incorporated to provide heating for the pool water and to generate power at the same time. With this design approach, we could accommodate the on-site power generation and stay within budget as the Microturbine cost offset the heaters’ cost.
