SÉANCE #9 - La désinformation sur TikTok

La journaliste indépendante, Hélène Boucher, définit brillamment les fake news dans un de ses articles : « On les connaît sous leur appellation américaine de "fake news". Cette propagation anglicisée de la désinformation sur le globe a culminé, depuis l'élection de Trump, en 2016 » (Boucher, 2022 : 1er para.). Depuis, la plateforme TikTok a vu le jour et elle est quant à moi l’exemple idéal pour illustrer la problématique de la désinformation politique en contexte numérique.

Au lendemain des élections américaines de mi-mandat du 8 novembre 2022, je relate que le mot-clic « #midtermelections2022 » a accumulé 19,4 millions de vues sur TikTok. Le problème est que des millions de personnes ont visionné du contenu vraisemblablement erroné ou pas à l’aide de ce mot-clic. TikTok est une plateforme dangereuse qui est utilisée par des créateurs qui propagent de la bonne information et de la mauvaise information. Les utilisateurs consomment puis interprètent plusieurs fausses informations. La journaliste Pauline Croquet présente les faits d’une enquête réalisée de l’ONG Global Witness et d’une équipe de l’école d’ingénieurs Tandon de l’Université de New York : « […] la plate-forme de vidéos " échoue à détecter les fausses informations électorales" » (Croquet, 2022 : 2e par.).

Bien que la désinformation soit prohibée sur la plateforme, TikTok est une application de vidéos, ainsi le contrôle de détection de fausses informations en contexte électorale est difficile. Même que l’enquête mentionnée plus haut consistait à publier dix fausses publicités concernant de fausses informations électorales. Le résultat est que 90% des fausses publicités ont été publiés sur l'application TikTok (Croquet, 2022 : 2e par.).

Les règles communautaires de TikTok devraient être révisées pour éviter la propagation de fausses nouvelles politiques. Je crois qu’il est du devoir de TikTok d’assurer une plateforme sécuritaire pour ses utilisateurs. Une plateforme où le contenu politique est doublement surveillé, voire banni des créateurs qui propagent de fausses informations. Je suis convaincue que des mesures peuvent être mises en place sans brimer la liberté d’expression des créateurs.
