WOL Questions! Who was your WOL before meeting the Scions? Are there any relationships/friends maintained outside of the Scions throughout the story?

Ah, man I love seeing questions like these!

Anyway to begin answering them, before Odtsetseg was officially the WOL, she was the daughter of Hotgo's khagan Temujin. She also was not a participant in any pre-calamity events in Eorzea as the au ra was only thirteen at the time. After the destruction of their tribe she and her father set out for Eorzea in order to follow the visions she was having. Unfortunately, Temujin did not make it to said western lands with his daughter. As a result, young archer became a vagabond only arriving in Gridania to both improve her skills as an archer and gain some reputation as a fierce adventurer.

Now concerning any relationships outside of the Scions: To name a few canon-wise I do believe she was friends or at least heavily acquainted with Mide, Dayan and their crew. They all came from the same tribe, after all. She also has kept in touch with the members of house Fortemps, since not only was Haurchefant a good friend but that family in particular also supported her raen mother and twin by providing them with work in an auri-hostile environment.

Now headcanon-wise Odtsetseg has improved and maintained relations with her raen mother and twin brother. With her twin though, their relationship hit a bit of a bump during the initial events of Stormblood. Fortunately, by Endwalker they made up and I can safely say after a certain raid xaela has a newfound gratitude towards her mother.

Don’t think about the AU in which Mide stays in the present and learns how Alexander’s technology was actually able to protect people by taking the Exarch and the Crystal Tower through time. Don’t think about her going to Idyllshire to tell Alexander this as Roundrox shows the cool stuff they found on their journeys. Don’t think about Myde learning the Exarch was able to separate himself from his duty and be an individual again unlike Dayan. *starts crying*

Man I’ve been having thoughts about the Hotgo, and since I have no idea if there are ideas about the tribe already floating some, I’m gonna document some here for posterity. I guess if anybody has their own ideas lemme know? Otherwise I guess if you like this then CHAT WITH ME ABOUT IT

So I guess I like the idea that the Hotgo were all about being up front about stuff. Like obviously we know they did the facepaint thing, which to me means they’re clearly trying to be real open about their feelings, and I’ve seen another Hotgo say they interpreted that as meaning they were also emotionally honest. And I like that! But I’d take it farther.

Like maybe they weren’t the type to be particularly quiet, or they preferred hostilities to be in the open rather than stealthy. I don’t know how many tribes ARE stealthy, but I guess that’s beside the point. I like the concept that they were the kind of people who wouldn’t hide a grudge but would prefer to make it known and deal with it–if that meant a fight then so be it, otherwise to hell with it, we can talk it over or yell it over or compete in some other way, but at least it’s dealt with and we can move on.

Maybe that extended to a certain kind of open bravery, and maybe that bravery was what got them into trouble with the Dotharl. I know the group I’m in is generally down with the idea that they were warring for a while before the Dotharl got sick of shit and up and massacred them (or something else triggered it, dunno), so it makes sense that there might have been that kind of hostility. Or they were just small and easy to fuck up! I dunno, I guess those don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

In any case, even if that isn’t something anybody else likes and it’s just me, I’m still happy to take it as Yaria’s interpretation of the Hotgo at least (not like she hasn’t been wrong before). Cuz she’s a girl who is terribly ashamed of herself for being a coward–she hid instead of fighting to the end when the Dotharl came, and then instead of going after them she ran to Eorzea.

And now she has it in her head that she has to get power to quell her fears and be a Good Hotgo (and why not get more magic knowledge? after all, the Dotharl are led by a powerful mage and maybe if she’d learned more of that instead of the tiny bit she used with her spear, she could have helped), but she keeps fucking up and lying and being generally a Bad Hotgo. I mean shit, she finally met another one and even she was braver than Yaria has been, willing to call out a dude slandering the Xaela when Yaria just sat there looking discomfitted. Bad feels!

Anyway I dunno! If anybody reads this and had thoughts, hit me up. I’m just musing in an attempt to get a handle on my character and the world around her.

(P.S. Still don’t know what to make of Mide? Is she a Hotgo? When I look her up I see her listed as a Hotogo, which is probably just a weird typo, I haven’t replayed the Alex stuff in a while. Either way, not sure what that tells us?? Hlep)

you know, i’m sure it won’t come up, alexander storyline being what it was and all--

but we did have a hotgo NPC in the game--mide. it’d be interesting to see what she’d make of the warrior of light allying with the dotharl.

Emotions were a very openly discussed topic among the Hotgo clan, when they still walked the Azim Steppes. They were well known for their intricate way of painting their faces, and the paint would often change depending on the individual’s mood. (Source)

Because they (literally) wear their emotions, they’re known to be very open with said emotions, which has led to a clan that knows well how to express themselves, as well as lend support to anyone in need of expressing themselves.

It has also led to Ryce growing up in a community that showed great care in one another and became closely knit. People from Clan Hotgo also tend to be very expressive, not only through their paint, but in facial expressions and body language.

Additional headcanons about Clan Hotgo:

Ryce is, obviously, not the only survivor. There are at least two named individuals that survived (Dayan and Mide).

Clan Hotgo was destroyed about three months prior to the Calamity, and five years before ARR.
