Nobody has ever seen the Queen. Sure, the old men down at the tavern will talk your ear off about how their great-aunts met Her or whatever, but those tales are twisted by time even if they were true to begin with. When supplies go up to Her castle overlooking the city of Milldale, or when decrees come out, they're handled with speed and silence by Her army of hooded servants with their featureless masks.
Nobody's ever seen their faces either. They say there was a village mayor up the Crane Hills who tried to gain leverage by ambushing and unmasking the servant delivering Her latest decree, and that just as he was about to strike, three more servants showed up out of nowhere and carried him away never to be seen again.
They say a lot of things, really. I've heard that the Queen is a vampire, or a lich, or even the Devil itself. I've heard that there hasn't been just one Queen, but a sequence of mothers secretly passing on the throne to their daughters. I've heard that actually there is no Queen at all and it's the masked servants who are in control.
It's all just idle gossip, though. Most people don't really care that much. After all, the Realm of Six Valleys has seen neither famine nor plague nor war within living memory, even as neighbouring countries face hardship after hardship — and surely our Queen has at least something to do with that. If the occasional spy or traitor disappears without a trace, well, that's their own problem.
But even so, we're all on the edge of our seats for Her wedding. Our glorious, all-powerful Queen will come out of Her sequester for the first time in over a century … to marry a commoner? The daughter of a baker? How did they even meet? I've been to the bride's family's bakery a few times and it's perfectly ordinary (lovely beet cake though). But it doesn't really matter, as long as they're both happy and the good times continue…
Dovedale, England, April 2023 — It was a beautiful spring day in the Peak District National Park. Hiked to the tiny village of Milldale through lovely countryside and enjoyed our picnic lunch. Tom impressed us all by hiking to the top of a mountain in a flash.
