Recommendation engines and "lean-back" media

In William Gibsonâs 1992 novel âIdoru,â a media executive describes her companyâs core audience:
âBest visualized as a vicious, lazy, profoundly ignorant, perpetually hungry organism craving the warm god-flesh of the anointed. Personally I like to imagine something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. Itâs covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouthâŚno genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote. Or by voting in presidential elections.â
Itâs an astonishingly great passage, not just for the image it evokes, but for how it captures the character of the speaker and her contempt for the people who made her fortune.
Itâs also a beautiful distillation of the 1990s anxiety about TVâs role in a societal âdumbing down,â that had brewed for a long time, at least since the Nixon-JFK televised debates, whose outcome was widely attributed not to JFKâs ideas, but to Nixonâs terrible TV manner.
Neil Postmanâs 1985 âAmusing Ourselves To Deathâ was a watershed here, comparing the soundbitey Reagan-Dukakis debates with the long, rhetorically complex Lincoln-Douglas debates of the previous century.
(Incidentally, when I finally experienced those debates for myself, courtesy of the 2009 BBC America audiobook, I was more surprised by Lincolnâs unequivocal, forceful repudiations of slavery abolition than by the rhetoricâs nuance)
https://memex.craphound.com/2009/01/20/lincoln-douglas-debate-audiobook-civics-history-and-rhetoric-lesson-in-16-hours/
âMedia literacyâ scholarship entered the spotlight, and its left flankâââepitomized by Chomskyâs 1988 âManufacturing Consentââââclaimed that an increasingly oligarchic media industry was steering society, rather than reflecting it.
Thus, when the internet was demilitarized and the general public started tricklingâââand then rushingâââto use it, there was a widespread hope that we might break free of the tyranny of concentrated, linear programming (in the sense of âwhatâs on,â and âwhat it does to youâ).
Much of the excitement over Napster wasnât about getting music for freeâââit was about the mix-tapification of all music, where your custom playlists would replace the linear album.
Likewise Tivo, whose ad-skipping was ultimately less important than the ability to watch the shows you liked, rather than the shows that were on.
Blogging, too: the promise was that a community of reader-writers could assemble a daily ânewsfeedâ that reflected their idiosyncratic interests across a variety of sources, surfacing ideas from other places and even other times.
The heady feeling of the time is hard to recall, honestly, but there was a thrill to getting up and reading the news that you chose, listening to a playlist you created, then watching a show you picked.
And while there were those who fretted about the âDaily Meâ (what we later came to call the âfilter bubbleâ) the truth was that this kind of active media creation/consumption ranged far more widely than the monopolistic media did.
The real âbubbleâ wasnât choosing your own programmingâââit was everyone turning on their TV on Thursday nights to Friends, Seinfeld and The Simpsons.
The optimism of the era is best summarized in a taxonomy that grouped media into two categories: âlean backâ (turn it on and passively consume it) and âlean forwardâ (steer your media consumption with a series of conscious decisions that explores a vast landscape).
Lean-forward media was intensely sociable: not just because of the distributed conversation that consisted of blog-reblog-reply, but also thanks to user reviews and fannish message-board analysis and recommendations.
I remember the thrill of being in a hotel room years after Iâd left my hometown, using Napster to grab rare live recordings of a band Iâd grown up seeing in clubs, and striking up a chat with the nodeâs proprietor that ranged fondly and widely over the shows weâd both seen.
But that sociability was markedly different from the âsocialâ in social media. From the earliest days of Myspace and Facebook, it was clear that this was a sea-change, though it was hard to say exactly what was changing and how.
Around the time Rupert Murdoch bought Myspace, a close friend a blazing argument with a TV executive who insisted that the internet was just a passing fad: that the day would come when all these online kids grew up, got beaten down by work and just wanted to lean back.
To collapse on the sofa and consume media that someone else had programmed for them, anaesthetizing themselves with passive media that didnât make them think too hard.
This guy was obviously wrongâââthe internet didnât disappearâââbut he was also right about the resurgence of passive, linear media.
But this passive media wasnât the âmust-see TVâ of the 80s and 90s.
Rather, it was the passivity of the recommendation algorithm, which created a per-user linear media feed, coupled with mechanisms like âendless scrollâ and âautoplay,â that incinerated any trace of an active role for the âconsumerâ (a very apt term here).
It took me a long time to figure out exactly what I disliked about algorithmic recommendation/autoplay, but I knew I hated it. The reason my 2008 novel LITTLE BROTHER doesnât have any social media? Wishful thinking. I was hoping it would all die in a fire.
Today, active media is viewed with suspicion, considered synonymous with Qanon-addled boomers who flee Facebook for Parler so they can stan their favorite insurrectionists in peace, freed from the tyranny of the dread shadowban.
But Iâm still on team active media. I would rather people actively choose their media diets, in a truly sociable mode of consumption and production, than leaning back and getting fed whatever is served up by the feed.
Today on Wired, Duke public policy scholar Philip M Napoli writes about lean forward and lean back in the context of Trumpâs catastrophic failure to launch an independent blog, âFrom the Desk of Donald J Trump.â
https://www.wired.com/story/opinion-trumps-failed-blog-proves-he-was-just-howling-into-the-void/
In a nutshell, Trump started a blog which he grandiosely characterized as a replacement for the social media monopolists whoâd kicked him off their platforms. Within a month, he shut it down.
While Trump claimed the shut-down was all part of the plan, itâs painfully obvious that the real reason was that no one was visiting his website.
Now, there are many possible, non-exclusive explanations for this.
For starters, it was a very bad social media website. It lacked even rudimentary social tools. The Washington Post called it âa primitive one-way loudspeaker,â noting its lack of per-post comments, a decades old commonplace.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/05/21/trump-online-traffic-plunge/
Trump paid (or more likely, stiffed) a grifter crony to build the site for him, and it shows: the âLikeâ buttons didnât do anything, the video-sharing buttons created links to nowhere, etc. From the Desk⌠was cursed at birth.
But Napoliâs argument is that even if Trump had built a good blog, it would have failed. Trump has a highly motivated cult of tens of millions of peopleâââpeople who deliberately risked death to follow him, some even ingesting fish-tank cleaner and bleach at his urging.
The fact that these cult-members were willing to risk their lives, but not endure poor web design, says a lot about the nature of the Trump cult, and its relationship to passive media.
The Trump cult is a âpush mediaâ cult, simultaneously completely committed to Trump but unwilling to do much to follow him.
Thatâs the common thread between Fox News (and its successors like OANN) and MAGA Facebook.
And it echoes the despairing testimony of the children of Fox cultists, that their boomer parents consume endless linear TV, turning on Fox from the moment they arise and leaving it on until they fall asleep in front of it (also, reportedly, how Trump spent his presidency).
Napoli says that Trumpâs success on monopoly social media platforms and his failure as a blogger reveals the role that algorithmically derived, per-user, endless scroll linear media played in the ascendancy of his views.
It makes me think of that TV exec and his prediction of the internetâs imminent disappearance (which, come to think of it, is not so far off from my own wishful thinking about social mediaâs disappearance in Little Brother).
He was absolutely right that this century has left so many of us exhausted, wanting nothing more than the numbness of lean-back, linear feeds.
But up against that is another phenomenon: the resurgence of active political movements.
After a 12-month period that saw widescale civil unrest, from last summerâs BLM uprising to the bizarre storming of the capital, you canât really call this the golden age of passivity.
While Fox and OANN consumption might be the passive daily round of one of Idoruâs âvicious, lazy, profoundly ignorant, perpetually hungry organisms craving the warm god-flesh of the anointed,â that is in no way true of Qanon.
Qanon is an active pastime, a form of collaborative storytelling with all the mechanics of the Alternate Reality Games that the lean-forward media advocates who came out of the blogging era love so fiercely:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/08/06/no-vitiated-air/#other-hon
Meanwhile, the âclicktivismâ that progressive cynics decried as useless performance a decade ago has become an active contact sport, welding together global movements from Occupy to BLM that use the digital to organize the highly physical.
Thatâs the paradox of lean-forward and lean-back: sometimes, the things you learn while leaning back make you lean forwardâââin fact, they might just get you off the couch altogether.
I think that Napoli is onto something. The fact that Trumpâs cultists didnât follow him to his crummy blog tells us that Trump was an effect, not a cause (something many of us suspected all along, as heâs clearly neither bright nor competent enough to inspire a movement).
But the fact that âcyberspace keeps evertingâ (to paraphrase âSpook Country,â another William Gibson novel) tells us that passive media consumption isnât a guarantee of passivity in the rest of your life (and sometimes, itâs a guarantee of the opposite).
And it clarifies the role that social media plays in our discourseââânot so much a âradicalizerâ as a means to corral likeminded people together without them having to do much. Within those groups are those who are poised for action, or who can be moved to it.
The ease with which these people find one another doesnât produce a deterministic outcome. Sometimes, the feed satisfies your urge for change (âclicktivismâ). Sometimes, it fuels it (âradicalizingâ).
Notwithstanding smug media execs, the digital realm equips us to âexpress our mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desireâ by doing much more than âchanging the channels on a universal remoteââââfor better and for worse.

hi ash, how are you? Was wondering what Jon and Tish were up to these days?
It is not possible, as it turns out, to involve yourself with only one Queen.
They are all hopelessly tangled in each otherâs lives, and to love one of them is to surrender to the rest, who will adopt your troubles as their troubles and your triumphs as their triumphs. Aunt Thea settles in next to you, swirling a glass of wine, and smiles as if she knows your secrets just before deftly teasing them out of you. Mrs. Queen tiptoes up to the edge of her childrenâs boundaries, but she canât resist peeking over; mostly, she is too sincere to refuse. Abigail doesnât even bother to tiptoe. Mr. Queen is the most hands-off, but even he quietly smooths over little difficulties behind your back. You donât find out that heâs done it until months later, if ever.
So when Mrs. Queen was struggling to find an administrative assistant not long after my graduation, I suppose she found it perfectly natural to ask me.
âI canât exactly post âoccasional vigilantismâ as a requirement on LinkedIn,â she told me. âBut the secret is safe with you, and you have the requisite skill set. I think youâd be perfect. Ideal. Sans pareil.â She tilted her head faintly. âDid I say that right?â
I tried to be gentle when I pointed out, âMy boyfriendâs mother would be my boss.â
âIs that weird?â She wrinkled her nose. âIâm Jonâs boss, and itâs not weird. You know if you get tired of him, you still get to stay. I hope thatâs not your concern. You can keep coming to family dinners and everything.â
That honestly had not occurred to me. âWouldnât the rest of the office consider it blatant nepotism?â
âWith Jon, they got over it as soon as they realized he wasnât useless. Youâll be fine too.â She leaned closer to me and said earnestly, âLook, I could really use the help.â
I knew as much; Jon had been complaining for months that she shouldnât be going it alone anymore.
âI know youâre looking for something in your field, but it seems like that might take some time. This is only a first job to get you started and build a little work history, just until you find something better.â
As I said, Mrs. Queen is too sincere to refuse.
When I came into the office to formally accept her offer, she shook my hand across her desk and said, âDonât breathe a word to Jon. I want to surprise him.â
My first morning at Panoptic, she called Jon into her office to meet her new admin, and she had a good giggle at the look on his face. But the shock wore off in about five minutes, and at the first opportunity, he tried to back me against a wall and put his hands up my shirt.
âThis was nowhere in the job description,â I said, once I had worked up some self-control.
âNope.â He bent down to kiss my neck. âThis is just perks.â
It took me longer than it should have to push him backwards, but eventually I managed it. âYour mother did not hire me to make your life more fun.â
âOf course she didnât. That would be messed up.â He sighed theatrically. âSo no bending you over my desk.â
Heat washed through me, and I closed my eyes and let myself imagine it for just a moment. With an effort, I shook my head. âNo inappropriate use of any desks.â
In my first week as Felicity Queenâs admin, I learned to navigate her unusual scheduling software, the source code of which she had modified heavily to suit her preferences. I learned to document meetings in her idiosyncratic system, to recognize her frantic hand signal for, âTell them Iâm busy,â and to brew coffee strong enough to wake the dead.
A few of the employees - mostly protectors who had guarded me in the past - welcomed me enthusiastically. The others reserved judgment, and I overheard at least one joke in the break room, speculating on what I had really been hired to do here, which cemented my resolve about desks and the uses thereof.
On my sixth day at Panoptic, I met Jeremy Price Longwood.
âIâm sorry, who?â Mr. Queen asked at dinner the previous night.
âThink Chris Hemsworth,â Mrs. Queen explained. âOr Pratt or Evans or Pine. Really, any of the Chrises.â
Mr. Queen blinked, just once, where a man less stoic might have grimaced in distaste. âAh.â
âWeâre guarding his face,â Jon said. âSpecifically his face. Itâs insured for half a million.â
âMuch more than that, certainly,â I said.
He gave me a look.
The next morning, Mrs. Queen called together the team delegated to Mr. Longwoodâs case. âHeâs in Starling to shoot a Romeo and Juliet âreimagining,â as if we needed another one of those. Ever since that werewolf movie, heâs been seeing an uptick in creepers. Nothing he hasnât handled before, but weâre going to keep somebody nearby. We donât want some poor deluded soul running on set and shoving a bundle of love letters down his shirt. Itâs embarrassing, and heâs had enough of that this year.â
âEnough love letters down his shirt?â said Ms. Ramirez.
âEnough embarrassment.â Mrs. Queen gave a little shudder. âThe werewolf thing. Poor guy.â
He had his shirt off for half the movie. Personally, I thought he had nothing at all to be embarrassed about.
âSounds pretty standard,â Jon said, getting to his feet. âWho wants the first evening shift?â
Not half an hour later, the man himself came striding through the front doors with a small styrofoam cup in his hands, and he came straight to me at the front desk. âHey, sorry Iâm late,â he said. âYâall know the numbers have rubbed off the elevator buttons?â
On film, he was lovely, but in person, he was devastating. It took me a moment to answer him. âI apologize for the confusion. Can I get you anything? Water or coffee?â
He raised the styrofoam cup. âYour neighbors one floor up - the divorce law firm? - they hooked me up.â He gave me a conspiratorial smile, and my heart skipped a beat. âNo one tell my wife I walked in there.â
I would have loved to joke right back. All I managed was, âOf course not.â Hopefully my cheeks werenât visibly pink. âIâll show you to the conference room and lets Mrs. Queen know youâre here.â
âHow did you find out about us?â was among Mrs. Queenâs standard battery of questions for new clients.
âA friend gave me your name,â said Mr. Longwood. âYou came recommended by Bruce Wayne, so he figured you must be the real deal.â
Mrs. Queen looked unduly pleased by that, considering.
By the time he left an hour later, half the staff was as charmed as I was.
âAw, heâs gonna be easy,â Darius said. âI can already tell. No clubbing, no foolishness, no babysitting his drunk ass. This dude lives in the gym and eats unsalted chicken breast.â
âCertainly looks that way,â Ms. Ramirez agreed. âDid you hear he called me maâam? I love when these Southern boys do that. It means theyâll fucking listen.â
Once everyone else had cleared out, I turned to Mrs. Queen. âDidnât Mr. Queen and Mr. Wayne have a bit of a falling out?â
âThey did, but he never fell out with Panoptic. Bruce used to have Dig guarding him every time he was in Starling.â
âWas that, ah, strictly necessary?â I said delicately. âFor Batman?â
âOf course not. Bruce just thought it was funny.â
Within a few days, Mr. Longwood left us all utterly disarmed.
Except for Jon. Very few people can disarm Jonathan Queen, and Jeremy Price Longwood is not among them. After a week of protective services and one more office meeting, Jonâs ultimate assessment was: âWhat a cheeseball.â
âI think heâs sincere,â I said.
âThatâs because heâs a skillful cheeseball.â
âAh, of course, he fooled the silly little girl,â I said, crossing my arms. âBut you see right through him with an unbiased eye.â
âHe makes you all fluttery. Admit it.â
âDarius and Ms. Ramirez also found him courteous and friendly, and you canât accuse either of them of getting fluttery.â
âJones likes anyone who pays for lunch, and Ramirez likes dumb golden retrievers who sit and stay on command.â
âYou werenât this mean about the oil exec making business trips to Angola - the one who almost definitely had a genuine personality disorder. But this one, you canât stand.â
âThis one expects me to like him. The BP guy had the decency not to give a damn.â
I sighed. âAll right, Jonathan.â
Itâs not difficult to understand, in the end. Jon is a good-looking man, if I do say so myself, and he is in fantastic shape. But he lives in a permanent state of three-day scruff, and he will always look more boyish than debonair. He is in the kind of shape optimized to slam into you like a hammer, not the kind engineered to look good on camera.
Perfectly gelled and professionally dressed Jeremy Price Longwood is standing right there, and of course Jon is supremely irritated by him. Itâs like when I have to stand next to willowy Elaine Diggle, magnified severalfold.
âTell me something,â I said, mostly as a distraction. âWhat was so funny about asking Mr. Diggle to guard people who didnât exactly need guarding?â
âOh, that.â Jon shook his head. âMy dad spent years pretending to lose sparring matches to Dig, just to make sure everybody knew what a helpless marshmallow he was. Drove Dig up the wall.â
I never quite understood the dynamics of combat sports. âWhy would he care, if it was all part of their cover?â
âYou know when you get old enough to realize your dad is letting you win at Battleship or whatever?â
No, I couldnât say I knew how that felt.
Jon cleared his throat. âItâs condescending as hell. Especially when he thinks itâs hilarious, and you canât make him stop laughing, because if you try heâs just going to lay you out on the floor again.â
âHe did this to you as well,â I surmised.
âHe wears ties and reading glasses,â Jon said, rolling his eyes. âHeâs just a boring middle-aged public servant, play-fighting to stay in shape. He doesnât even know how to break someoneâs neck. Honest.â
âYou Queens are a strange tribe.â
Jon shrugged. âYou joined. What does that make you?â
What, indeed?
That summer, I learned Panoptic inside out. I took notes on Mrs. Queenâs consultations with a businessman who traveled extensively in Mexico, with one of Laurel Lanceâs attorneys recently assigned to an organized crime case, and with a woman who wore a cast on her left wrist and who had recently procured a restraining order against her husband.
Most of the people who came through our doors were terrified for one reason or another. Mrs. Queen coaxed information out of them with a practiced cheerfulness that should have felt inappropriate, but which they mostly found comforting. Jon did it much more bluntly, which occasionally rubbed people the wrong way, but more often inspired shockingly unreserved trust.
âThatâs one of the upsides of a runaway mouth,â Mrs. Queen said ruefully. âPeople notice youâve fumbled the reins, and they assume thatâs the same thing as honesty.â
I shook my head. âI think itâs because they can tell heâs genuinely listening. Most people wait for their turn to talk.â
âYou know,â Mrs. Queen tipped her head at me, ânot one of his teachers, through twenty-ish years of school, ever singled out listening as one of his strengths.â
âMr. Queen is the same way,â I pointed out. âHe looks you right in the eyes, and you feel like you have his complete and undivided attention.â
She nodded thoughtfully. âEven when heâs actually thinking about the fastest way to get you out of his office.â She grinned, swiveling back to her computer. âOliver worked hard at his politician face.â
By September, I knew more about my boyfriendâs mother than anyone reasonably should.
I knew that she could only stare at a screen for three hours before she got a headache. She took her disgusting coffee with a disgusting amount of artificial sweetener. She got anxious before Skype meetings with Dig and Lyla, because this was their baby she was raising. She wore a size six or eight, depending on the brand, and a nice man named Warren dyed her hair every seven weeks.
âI suspect Thursday nights are date nights,â I mused out loud to Jon one afternoon. âShe rarely leaves after five, and she sometimes sends me to Martinâs Wine Cellar first.â
âThatâs nice,â he said vaguely. âThursdays are Bordeaux sex. Everybody loves Bordeaux sex.â A few moments later, he looked up from his glassbook to frown at me. âDo you think my family has boundary issues?â
I shrugged and went back to my backlog of emails.
Over the course of Romeo and Julietâs shooting schedule, Panoptic intercepted a few cringeworthy letters to Mr. Longwood, and our protectors turned away the odd paparazzo or pushy fan, but altogether the job was as easy as Darius predicted.
âLongwoodâs got a solid right straight too,â Darius said. âApparently stage fighting isnât complete bullshit.â
Mrs. Queen narrowed her eyes at him. âYouâve been beating up your principal?â
I glanced at Jon, who looked both annoyed and intrigued.
âHeâs gone to work on some strike mitts with me, thatâs all,â Darius said. âI told you, this dude lives at the gym.â
âJust donât mess up his face,â Jon advised with mock seriousness. âBe very careful with the face.â
âYou want to take a swing at him,â I said, as soon as Darius left the room. âDonât pretend.â
His shrug was not denial.
âHeâs an excellent client, and you may not hit him,â Mrs. Queen said. âNo matter how annoyingly pretty he is.â
âThatâs not the - â
âYes, it is.â On her way out the door, she patted his cheek, and then she nodded meaningfully at me. âShe thinks youâre adorable. Good enough, right?â
She winked at me, and then she headed for her office.
Jon rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed heavily. âI think the boss just gave us permission to flirt at work. I donât like it.â
I gave him a couple of consoling pats. âItâs just perks, darling.â
When Romeo and Juliet wrapped, there was no call for Mr. Longwood to return to our office, but he dropped by to say thank you and sign autographs. He had that kind of class. For Jon, he offered an especially strong handshake and his most sparkling Southern smile - âThank you for all you doâ - and Jon returned it warmly.
As soon as the door closed behind Longwood, Jon muttered, âExtremely punchable face, though.â
Mrs. Queen and I exchanged a smile, and we went back to work.

Can Republicans Vote In Nh Primary

The Race In New Hampshire
Trump suggests Republicans vote for âweakestâ Democrat in NH primary | AFP
Mitt Romney swept to victory in the New Hampshire primary, turning back a ferocious assault from rivals who sought to disqualify him in the eyes of conservatives. Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, won by a double-digit margin, a validation of his strategy to use his neighboring state to cement his standing as the front-runner. The candidates who had hoped to use the primary to emerge as his leading rival fared poorly, leaving a fractured Republican opposition. Read More Âť
How Many Delegates Are Up For Grabs
New Hampshire has 24 national delegates. There are 16 district-level delegates divided between the states two congressional districts, five at-large delegates and three pledged party leader and elected official delegates. Candidates need to get at least 15% of the vote in a district or statewide to reach the delegate threshold. If no candidate reaches 15% which is unlikelybased on current polling the threshold is half of whatever the front-runners vote percentage is in the district.
Trump In New Hampshire
HIGHLIGHTS
New Hampshire held its Democratic primary on .
New Hampshire had an estimated 33 delegates comprised of 24 pledged delegates and nine superdelegates. Delegate allocation was proportional.
The Democratic primary was semi-closed, meaning only registered party members and unaffiliated voters could vote in the partyâs primary.
Former Vice President Joe Biden was formally nominated as the Democratic presidential nominee at the 2020 Democratic National Convention on August 18, 2020. The convention was originally scheduled to take place July 13-16, 2020. Organizers postponed the event in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Prior to the national convention, individual state caucuses and primaries were held to allocate convention delegates. These delegates vote at the convention to select the nominee. In 2020, a Democratic presidential candidate needed support from 1,991 delegates to secure the nomination.

How does voting work?
Itâs a primary, so voters head to the polls like they would in a general election. Itâs âsemi-open,â meaning independents can participate. About 40% of the state are independents, and given that there is no competitive GOP primary happening, one might expect to see a higher percentage of independents turn out on the Democratic side than in 2016.
In 2016, independents made up 40% of the electorate, according to the exit polls, but there were competitive primaries on both sides. In 2008, it was 44%, but in 2004 the last time there was a competitive Democratic primary with an incumbent Republican president up for reelection 48% of the electorate was independents.
Donât confuse independents with moderates, though. Sanders, who won the 2016 primary by more than 20 points, won three-quarters of independents. He won a slightly lower percentage of self-described moderates, 59%.

Donald Trump Says Republicans Will Vote For Weakest Candidate In Democrat New Hampshire Primary
The president called his Democrat opponents âweakâ and âextremeâ ahead of their nomination;contest there on Tuesday
Donald Trump sought to sabotage; Tuesday nightâs Democrat presidential nomination contest in New Hampshire by telling his own supporters to vote in it and pick the âweakestâ candidate.
In New Hampshire, the second US state to vote, 40 per cent of voters are not officially registered as Republicans or Democrats, and can choose which partyâs primary process they take part in.
At a massive rally in the city of Manchester on election eve the US president said his followers who were not registered should go to Democrat polling stations.
He said: âYou have crossover in primaries donât you? I hear a lot of Republicans here tomorrow will vote for the weakest candidate possible of the Democrats. Does that make sense? You people wouldnt do thatâŚ
âMy only problem is figuring out who the weakest is. Theyâre all weak. You can vote for the weakest candidate if you want, donât worry about it.â
Mr Trump did not name a candidate but his campaign has made clear they believe Bernie Sanders, the democratic socialist, would be easiest to beat.
The president said he held âthe biggest political rally in New Hampshire historyâ to âshake up the Dems a little bit,â adding that âthey have a really boring deal going on.â
Meanwhile, Democrat candidates criss-crossed the snowy state making desperate last pitches for votes.

The Tasks That Lie Ahead For Eric Adams After Winning Democratic Mayoral Primary
How Conservative, Undeclared NH Voters Could Swing The Primary | NBC News NOW
MANCHESTER, N.H. Embittered Never Trump Republicans tied to former Ohio Gov. John Kasich have secretly schemed to assist Joe Bidens campaign because they think hes the only Democrat who can beat the president and help them get revenge, The Post has learned.
Emails obtained by The Post show that two top staffers from Kasichs failed, 2016 primary campaign and Ohios former GOP chairman, a Kasich ally, were among those involved in efforts to boost support for the former vice president in last weeks botched Iowa caucus and Tuesdays New Hampshire primary.
Funding for the plan came largely from two deep-pocketed Democratic donors former Microsoft president Jon Shirley and his wife, Kimberly whove made maximum contributions to Biden and hosted a fund-raiser for him last year, records also show.
They think Biden is the only candidate who can beat Trump at the general election, said a GOP source familiar with the strategy.
Documents attached to one email show the group planned to identify and target at least 5,000 Democrats from the conservative voter base in each of Iowas four congressional districts, then use that information in suppression, persuasion and GOTV efforts.
That project failed miserably, with Biden coming in a distant fourth place last week.
In the Granite State, only Democrats and undeclared voters can vote in the partys primary.
A senior GOP source called the groups half-baked ideas dumbfounding.
Donât Miss: How Many States Are Controlled By Republicans
Campaigning Takes A Negative Turn In Closing Days Of New Hampshire Race
When is the New Hampshire primary?
Polls open at 8 a.m. ET and close, in most places, at 7 p.m. ET. But there are 221 towns in New Hampshire, and they all set their own times. Some scarcely populated towns famously begin voting at midnight to gain attention.
But all polls will be closed by 8 p.m. ET.
When will we see results?
We will start seeing results after 7 p.m. ET for most places, but there will be no calls from the news networks or The Associated Press until at least 8 p.m. ET. At that point, expect the Republican primary to be called for President Trump.
How Do The Delegates Break Down
There are 24 pledged delegates up for grabs in New Hampshire, with nine more unpledged deletes .
The 24 pledged delegates are allocated proportionally by the primary results, but a candidate must meet a 15 percent threshold to receive delegates.
Hereâs a further breakdown within those 24 delegates:
There are 16 district level-delegates . They are allocated in proportion to the percentage of the primary vote won in that district by each preference, except candidates falling below a 15 percent threshold do not get any delegates.
Within a district, if no candidate gets to 15 percent, the new threshold is half the percentage of the vote received in that district by the front-runner.
Eight other delegates are allocated proportionally according to the statewide primary vote. The 15 percent threshold applies for those allocations, as well. If no presidential preference reaches 15 percent, the threshold will be half the percentage of the statewide vote received by the front-runner.
Donât Miss: How Many Democratic Presidents Have Republicans Tried To Impeach
New Hampshire Presidential Primary
The New Hampshire presidential primary is the first in a series of nationwide party primary elections and the second party contest held in the United States every four years as part of the process of choosing the delegates to the Democratic and Republican national conventions which choose the party nominees for the presidential elections to be held the subsequent November. Although only a few delegates are chosen in the New Hampshire primary, its real importance comes from the massive media coverage it receives . Spurred by the events of the 1968 election, reforms that began with the 1972 election elevated the two statesâ importance to the overall election, and began to receive as much media attention as all of the other state contests combined. Examples of this extraordinary coverage have been seen on the campuses of Dartmouth College and Saint Anselm College, as the colleges have held multiple national debates and have attracted media outlets like NPR, Fox News, CNN, NBC, and ABC. The publicity and momentum can be enormous from a decisive win by a frontrunner, or better-than-expected result in the New Hampshire primary. The upset or weak showing by a front-runner changes the calculus of national politics in a matter of hours, as happened in 1952 , 1968 , 1980 , and 2008 .
State Political Party Revenue

State political parties typically deposit revenue in separate state and federal accounts in order to comply with state and federal campaign finance laws.
The Democratic Party and the Republican Party maintain state affiliates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and select U.S. territories. The following map displays total state political party revenue per capita for the Republican state party affiliates.

Can Democrats Sway Wyomingâs Republican Primary Election
In a highly contested Republican primary race for governor of Wyoming, Democratic voters could make a difference.
Heading into Tuesdayâs election, state treasurer Mark Gordon and multimillionaire GOP donor Foster Friess are, according to the polls, in a dead heat for the gubernatorial nomination.
The race is so close that some in Wyoming have urged Democrats to take a one-day elephant ride and cast their ballots for Gordon. A group called Switch for Wyoming has has taken on the battle, urging Democrats to switch their party affiliation to help get Gordon on the November ballot.
âWyomingâs legislature has been on a long march to the extreme right, but we have history electing moderate governors, thoughtful people who, even though we disagree with them often, act as a check on extreme legislation and bad decisions,â the groupâs website reads.
The group also urged voters to not allow a small number of extremists to pick our next governorâ and called Gordon the only âmoderateâ politician on the ballot.
Gordon is the stateâs treasurer and became well known for increasing Wyomingâs financial portfolio by $5 billion in five years. But Friess, a political newcomer with no experience as an elected official, has the backing of Donald Trump Jr. and millions of dollars in his campaign war chest.
Turnout In Pivot Counties
The following table shows the number of voters who participated in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in Pivot Counties in New Hampshire and the percentage change in raw voter turnout.
Across the three Pivot Counties in New Hampshire, Democratic turnout was up 18.6%. This was slightly more than the Democratic statewide turnout, which went up 18.8%.
Across the three Pivot Counties in New Hampshire, Republican turnout was down 46.4%. This nearly matched the percentage change in the Republican statewide turnout, which was down 46.3%.
Two Pivot Counties had increased Democratic turnout: Hillsborough and Sullivan counties. Sanders was the winner in both counties in both election years.
With an incumbent in the race, all Pivot Counties in New Hampshire saw reduced Republican turnout.

Arent Republicans Voting Today Too
Absolutely. Eleven candidates are running in the New Hampshire Republican primary. But its not much of a contest.
President Trumps most prominent challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, won 1.3% in the Iowa caucuses to Trumps 97.1%.
Former Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois is also on the ballot, but he dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses. Hes since vowed to help elect the eventual Democratic nominee he told CNN hed rather have a socialist in the White House than the current occupant.

VOTING BILLS RETAINED. A group of bills whose Republican supporters say are aimed at ensuring that only Granite State residents are eligible to vote in the state were pulled back and retained Wednesday by the GOP majority on the influential House Election Law Committee.
The committee will ostensibly work on the bills in the coming months, make changes and consider them again either later this year or early in 2022. At that point they would then go to the full House for votes.
The Democratic committee minority voted against retaining the bills, preferring to kill them outright, calling the GOP push an effort to disenfranchise and depress college students turnout at elections. But the GOP majority prevailed in a series of 11-9 party line votes, keeping the bills alive.
Among the retained bills was a measure proposed by state Rep. Robert Lynn, a retired state Supreme Court chief justice, to implement provisional ballots in New Hampshire.
Under current law, voters who are unable to show required identification when registering or voting must fill out an affidavit swearing that they are qualified and have 30 days to provide proof that they are domiciled where they say they are.

Why New Hampshires Independents Are So Tough To Pin Down
Every four years, the anticipation grows around how New Hampshires independent voters might vote come primary day. New Hampshire votes the week after the Iowa caucuses, making its primary a critical test for candidates.
Out of the more than 977,000 registered voters in the Granite State, about 413,500 are undeclared to either party, compared to the states 275,252 registered Democrats and 288,524 registered Republicans. Undeclared voters can choose either ballot in a primary and switch their party back to undeclared with their local election officials after theyve voted.
There hasnt been a sudden surge in Republican or Democratic registered voters switching over to undeclared, New Hampshire Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan told me. But because New Hampshire also allows same-day registration, Scanlan said hes expecting to see thousands of new voters at the polls on Election Day.
Most registrations take place on Election Day, he said. It will be in the tens of thousands. We wont know until Election Day.
The data we have on this group shows undeclared voters are certainly not a monolith, and they dont vote as a bloc. Polling data collected from 1999 to 2014 by Smith and former UNH political science professor and pollster David Moore showed that about 40 percent of undeclared voters consistently voted Republican and 45 percent Democratic. That left just 15 percent who could truly be considered independents, voting for candidates of both parties.

Remembering the Quarantine and Quarantine Fridays <3
Iâve been meaning to write about how special Quarantine Fridays were to me for a while. Â I think I was holding off because I thought writing it would make me sad. Â I mean--when will an opportunity to connect with friends and strangers in that particular manner happen? what up, delta?

But I think Iâm in a better place to reflect on it now. Â In fact, I really like reflecting on the quarantine knowing I survived it in a somewhat productive manner knowing many other people werenât as lucky.
Iâm blessed.
This is going to be a two-part post knowing that finishing school with the class of 2020 and 2021 (my juniors) really helped me make sense of my worth during those trying-ass-times.
Part One: Teacher Lyfe
March 2020
The Coronavirus was in the news since December â19. Â However, just because the world is the way that it is, our news centered around that orange dude and whatever he said. Â In fact, he continued to dominate the news until that silly little insurrection he started.
this all sounds like the old-me festering on shit thatâs beyond my control that would affect my happiness and being reactive of it. Â
Iâm not sure when I changed but I definitely changed during the quarantine. I honestly donât feel the need to voice or be reactive in any way that involves peopleâs different values.
I think this post is an attempt to try and make sense of how and why I changed

I have so many odd memories of early quarantine.
I remember that strange feeling of turning off my alarm to wake up at 6 AM knowing that school is indefinitely suspended. Â
Haha--I remember when it was a ~3-week pause in an attempt to ~flatten the curve~.
I remember feeling weird sleeping in on a Wednesday--a school night. Â
It felt like Spring Break but we couldnât really do anything so there wasnât really anything to celebrate? Â
It was somewhat exciting to not have work (and thankfully being paid when millions of people were out of jobs đ) those first few weeks. Â
Making sense of not being able to visit my family, my best friend that lives 20 min away, or even go out to my favorite restaurants was hard for me to grasp but I learned to enjoy my solitude while keeping in contact with people via technology.

Remember Zoom happy hours and group face times? Â Haha.
April 2020 I canât imagine what it was like to have children during the early days of the pandemic. Â
I canât imagine what it was like to teach 9th grade and below during the pandemic.
How do you help kids understand the world during those trying-ass-times?
Props that all of yaâll that did it.

I was blessed to be in the middle of teaching my juniors and seniors how to understand the world on their own terms when the quarantine began.  AP11 is a class centered around language and writing so there was always a focus on current events and making sense of it together.  The American Literature curriculum was always easy to relate to current events because, well, weâve always been broken. My teaching just became that much more real when we were experiencing this pandemic together.
I forget the actual logistics of how distance teaching/learning was but essentially these were the guidelines:
You can give opportunities for students to raise their grades.
You canât diminish studentsâ grades for any work they do over the pandemic
There was no âsetâ schedule but you have to make an effort to reach out to them.
I had 3 preps for about an hour each.
1 AP11 section
1 CP11 section
1 CP12: Search for Human Potential section
AP11 was more concerned with the rhetorical analysis essay. Â That was easy enough to teach. Â People understood rhetoric and how to write about it pretty quickly.
Barely anyone showed up for the CP11 sections
CP12 was beautiful knowing that people that showed up genuinely wanted to make sense of the pandemic together through the existential unit I always teach.
We read Notes from Underground and The Stranger. Â
It was a legit book club.
The problem was...we had weeks left before the contractual end of school. Â I was out of material.
May 2020 Existentialism is related to postmodernism, the movement I was teaching to my juniors, what better opportunity to teach one of my favorite postmodern books? Â White Noise.

Though that was my second to last year teaching English, it was definitely my most memorable because I was able to teach something for the sake of understanding the current climate of the world.
Mind you, this was before the vaccine, this was when we were trying our utmost best to understand how the virus operates, this was still very, very early in the pandemic.
For those unfamiliar with White Noise, itâs about a College professor who suffers from imposter syndrome and has a crippling fear of death and the unknown. All this gets accentuated when thereâs a airborne toxic event that occurs in the middle of the book.  It hit home for a lot of people.  It hit home with me with imposter syndrom during my 6th year in my third English department đ. Â
There were plenty of moments where I no longer felt like their teacher but a peer trying my best to make sense of the world through this book written in the â80s.
We found solace in the fact that people have feared death since the beginning of time. Â
We found solace that all the political rhetoric concerning whoâs to blame for the virus or how people are handling it may be a projection of their uncomfortabilty of the unknown or their own fear of death. Â Itâs easier to blame ____ than confront whatever is making us feel negative emotions.
It was liberating getting to the end of that book knowing that the pandemic still exists (in the book and in real life) but all is well. Â
All is well simply because there are other things in this world to care about versus worry about.
Itâs a lesson of being proactive of what you can control versus reactive of what you canât control.
Itâs a lesson that took me months to practice in my own life.
Early June 2020 I tell my students how much they mean to me in a genuine way at the end of the year. Â Understanding the pandemic together was definitely something I needed in my life.
All my lessons somehow tie into the idea that school is only important if you make it important. Â Sometimes that includes getting good grades and letters of recommendation to get to where you want to be. Â Sometimes it means simply knowing how to interact with others to finish a group project. Â Sometimes itâs getting close with a teacher knowing that heâs going through the same shit youâre going through, too.
Thatâs what made these students so special. Â They saw I genuinely cared and genuinely gave it back through these optional class meetings we had. Â
This meant the world to me when the world was standing still. Â I had an alarm to wake up (10:00 AM?) so we could discuss the next chapters and it was something I genuinely looked forward to.
I learned so much from them from that silly little book I read when I was 18/19 at Orange Coast College. Â Mind you, I definitely wasnât as mature as they were at that age. Â But again, we werenât literally living a pandemic, too.
I felt like my AP11 students graduated with my CP12 students.  So much, in fact, I was pretty confused to see them on campus when we returned.  I thought they were already off doing big thangz. Â
Iâm proud of you all. Iâm thankful for yaâll experiencing that with me.
Signed--from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Sandok
---

I think this is an appropriate transition to talk about how special quarantine fridays were to me during trying-ass-times now that I was able to collect my thoughts on why teaching was so important during the early quarantine stages.
I donât actually remember the actual day I attempted to livestream. Â I attempted it on Instagram Live and Twitch and it was so fucking awkward. Â I remember anxiously walking out in my patio to shake off the rust I had from DJâing. Â

Damn--I simultaneously wish and not wish I recorded that set. Â What on earth did I play? Â Was it bad? Â Or was I just nervous at randoms tuning in? Â Because I remember that was definitely nervewracking
April 17, 2021: The Birth of The Quarantine Series
I only know this date simply from my first Quarantine Series Flyer on Instagram. Â It correlates with my first instagram highlight of the initial days of the series. Â
Itâs wild at how bare this production looks revisiting it. Â
Still got that red light, thoooooo đ
--Â
Itâs hard for me to remember how I got comfortable with DJâing in my living room for my friends and select strangers. Â However, it was the biggest source of happiness during the quarantine--especially after the school year ended and my extroverted-ass didnât have the means to connect with others through literature and bullshit about life with my students.Â

Iâve had these turntables since I was 13. Â I used to lug them with my Vestax 06 mixer (which I finally dropped off at good well when I moved into my new place) along with two crates of records and CD booklets of burned CDs during my early days DJâing.
I bought a newâish mixer for the turntables but never really used it because I graduated from bedroom DJ a long time ago. Â This was literally the first time I used the mixer heavily.
This was also the first time DJâing with in-ear-monitors. Iâve always been a diva about in-ear monitors. Â I attempted to use them at Mesa once and hated it because I couldn't feel the music like a real DJ should when theyâre catering to a crowd feeling your vibe. đ
--
Slowly, I learned how to up the production of my twitch sets. Â My visuals were due for an update. Â I forget how long they were before #quarantinefridays but now theyâre 2 hours long of just pure red thirst. Â Hahaha

Quarantine Friday Highlights
Heavy Hip Hop Reflection Night
One of the special things about the Quarantine Series was knowing that I wasnât getting paid for this and I was able to play for an audience of myself on some nights. Â
I never get to play obscure 2000s hip hop anymore.  I dedicated an entire night to it when my mentor and my studentâs father were reminiscing about their college days in the early 2000s. Â
Here it is again for those of you that havenât read it.
Realizing that I donât want to be â90s DJ anymore
This has been a long time coming.  The first few years at Mesa were fun because I was able to bring a âclassy ratchetâ or âclatchetâ vibes to Costa Mesa when the scene was flooded with house music. Â
But damn...there came a point where I simply didnât wanna play that shit anymore.  I avoid âAinât No Funâ and âRegulateâ like the plague. Â
This was especially true seeing other DJs on twitch playing that stuff. Â As talented as they are--I feel like I outgrew that sound in the same sense I donât listen to The Beatles or Led Zeppelin anymore.
Realizing that new hip hop isnât that good
It was somewhere around the Future/Migos mumble rap era when I realized that this is this generationâs version of No Limit records. Â Hot trash.
Then Drake, a dude that popularized being a fuckboy, became the face of hip hop.
No thanks
Realizing that the shit i fuck with now is R&B
Iâve embraced this for a while in my personal life but itâs definitely dictating the type of DJ I am--so much that someone at Mesa asked me politely to play some hip hop. Â I smiled and realized, âwtf am i doing?â
YO JORJA, SZA, SUMMER, H.E.R., JHENE---KEEP THAT SHIT COMING.
Realizing that I want to continue to be a pioneer in this R&B trend that paak and mars are doing right now
Funk is alive and well. Â Thereâs even a fire playlist on spotify called Retro Pop that captures the vibe I want to have in my sets.
I gotta practice that shit more.
Shoutouts:
Dknypinay: definitely my biggest fan. Â Definitely my biggest influence. Â Everything dope about me is attributed to her interest in music in the â90s. Â She listened to KROQ, The Beat, Powe 106 and gave this 7 year old some flavor. Â My first album was her tape of Snoopâs Doggystyle!!!
Bryan_black6: I helped this dude move from Dallas to Cali in December. Â Pre-vaccine. Â We had big plans of doing an âon-the-roadâ set for the quarantine series. Â LITTLE DID WE KNOW WEâD ALMOST DIE IN THAT UHAUL MULTIPLE TIMES. Â A lot of the R&B Iâd play on twitch was reminiscent of the music weâd listen to when heâd tattoo me in his bedroom. Â

Implicithero: One of the biggest compliments I got over #quarantinefridays came from Drew and Mel. Â âDamn, EJ. Â I knew you were good from Mesa, but I never knew your knowledge of music stretched that far. Â Youâre mad talented.â Â I do it for yaâll, boo đ Even that weird-ass-Morrissey-Emo night. Â hahaha
Jonpham: I djâd this dudeâs wedding pretty recently. Â Jon and I have similar mindsets where we try to stay humble but know our worth in regards to what we give back to the hip hop community. Â I know Iâm no scrub DJ and he knows heâs no whack bboy. Â It was an honor to show you the ropes of DJâing and sharing some sets with you during the pandemic. Â
Anditapandita: No idea how you find me but Iâm glad you did!  Itâs always a special feeling when I meet someone that can not only vibe to my music, but my generic silly lifestyle, too. It was great meeting you at Mesa the other day!  I was definitely playing some #quarantinefridays hits for bits of nostalgia.
Fr4ncheesie: According to Bryan, Fr4ncheesie is my looper. Â Parallel Filipino lives in different states. Â It was tight getting to know you strictly through the twitch chats knowing Bryan has always wanted to link us up. Â It was a pleasure dropping some classic John Legend for yaâll.
Lordnik0n_: A former studentâs father.  Prior to joining my Twitch sets, he let me know he listened to my mixtapes on Back to School Night.  It was the wildest thing ever to hear a parent listen to my ratchet/sleazy mixtapes.  I wrote an entire blog post about how special that hip hop night was so Iâll keep this brief. Here it is once more.
Rubadubinatub: One of the only reasons I keep it real at Mesa is to please the bartending staff with what I drop. Â Crabtree has always been a fan of my shit and I always try my best to throw in some Mobb Deep and Fleetwood Mac when I can.
Aimeegg: It was always fun seeing my sister and Aimee flood the chat with their own conversation. I remember you appreciating hearing Alicia Keysâ A Womanâs Worth knowing it doesnât get that much love these days.  but...THATâS WHAT I DO.  I revive the forgotten but dope.
Ki55my6utth0l3/bbcwif34u: you fucking weirdo
Bkdthvn: Damn. Â Many memories playing for my boy. Â Some of those memories include my neighbors, both sets, asking, âwhat song was ____?â and it being a BKDTHVN song. Â Itâs wild how far you came with music. Â It was an honor to bless the twitch radiowaves with your shit and it will continue to be an honor to bump Mesa with your shit.
Pbisharat11: thanks for always tuning in. particularly thanks for tuning in and sending this over.
Jspinsir: I will definitely enjoy the select nights where you would partake in Paola and Iâs ludicrousness during #quarantinefridays
Itserica143: đ
thanks for...that
Dj_redline: Damn...It was always a crazy honor for my DJ mentor to bless his presence in my channel. Â I was able to have a respectable record collection from the stuff you gave me when I was in middle school. Â I was able to learn the secrets of how to buy beat junkies and ISP skratch records knowing that shit isnât obvious. Â It was the foundation I needed before I was lucky enough to be taken in by Dwenz and join Foundation FunKollective. Â DJâing and DJâing my way is literally part of me because you showed me the ropes and Iâll forever be grateful.
Jen_lu: My biggest fan on the east coast!  It was so humbling to know that during the pandemic her group of friends would look forward to my sets.  They even rocked space buns showing their support!  I remember the days I had to start early because of the time difference. Love yaâll to death.

Mylove3169: South Bay in the houuuuuse! Damn. Â It was always fun to play some classic funk for you. Â Even the G-Funk brought me back to my days spinning at your parentsâ front yard. Â I definitely wanted to keep my shit Westcoast when you were on. Â Holla!
Disrupty: A later staple of the quarantine series in 2021. Â Shit was always fun to see you and mayo reminisce about back in the day knowing I missed out being part of that crew.
Alejandrooo825: My literal neighbors.  Kayla heard my patio door open during the pandemic and struck up a conversation.  I invited them over to socially distance in my patio as a proper introduction and to talk about the pandemic.  They had a squat rack five feet away from where I taught so they heard many lectures as well as shared many ratchet nights on quarantine Fridays.  The quarantine was definitely a great way to get to know yaâll.  Definitely loved playing Mac Miller for yaâll any chance I got. Â
Snookie23: Oh man--anytime I would be able to sneak in a Freestyle set was because you and Chris wanted to groove at your place and I was happy to oblige. Â Always loved to shout out Monrovia as much as I could during those late nights.
Claraamontt17: A former student that would study for her APs listening to my rebroadcasts. Â If it were any other person, Iâd be nervous about the shit that I play on twitch--but your taste in music is as ratchet as mine soooo đ
Sashaaa_i: One of the last quarantine sets consisted of maddd Doja Cat because sashita put me on to it. Â She even got red lights at her place to match the quarantinefriday vibes đđđ
Earthtovirgo: Always appreciative of strangers finding me and vibing with my set. Â It really reminds me when I play somewhere in public and I see heads boppinâ. Â I remember you being stoked I played Monsune.

Are You Really Ready to Read This Much?
Guten Tag!
Moves have been made, am I right?! You are a big boy now! I know you last talked about how stressed life has been with so many unknowns floating around and being a source of disturbance in your life. As we move onto the next phase of life, our days become the work we do, the places we call home, and the people we spend time with and hold close. Any disruption of one of these aspects alone can wear and tear on a person and stretch them thin. But having almost all of those in flux, I canât even imagine the internal stress you felt. But I know that you have started to piece some semblance of normalcy and establish a life for yourself. I cannot wait to see how you settle into a job that gives you experience in the field you ACTUALLY want to explore and make a home for yourself. It seems that half of our friends are experiencing the post-grad limbo of job hunting (unfortunately during a pandemic), while the other half of us are finding a little niche in the world to call our own, however temporary or beginner level it is. So from one bambi boy finding his legs in the wilderness of life to another, WELCOME TO THE GRIND! It feels pretty nice to just focus in on your job and not worry about what other million billion things for other classes and jobs and clubs you have to get done and in an excellent manner. So take a load off and grab a beer, it is time to reap the rewards of your hard work for the past years.
As you enter into the working grind, which you already know, I find it incredibly valuable to have some form of release and escape. Maybe this is the best time to figure out what that is and practice doing it because of the forced solidarity giving us the time at home to messed around. I know that should never be a problem for you to find some form of entertainment, as you are constantly reading or playing some game. I guess it helps that you work in the gaming industry and, being that games are kinda your life, playing them and experiencing them will always be a point of interest. So let me know what it is that you find to transport away from all the hustle and bustle. I would love to see what gets the juices flowing for you. Personally, outside of our DnD sessions, I have found a good source of release in my roommates as we joint-play games together. Our focus has been on these games with great narratives and characters, harkening more to cinematic experiences than a standard run and gun or rpg. For example, we are currently freeing a third world country from a dictator in Far Cry 3. Although a 1st person open world shooter at first sight, the story, visuals, and ability to choose your own story path are what drew us in and keep us coming back. I also just love the experience of playing a game with other people, as it strengthens the enjoyment of a normal game by allowing for a shared experience of a piece of art. Next on our list is The Last of Us, followed by part II. I am SUPER looking forward to seeing one of our favorite peopleâs character go through a pretty crazy situation. Lemme know of any other game recommendations that you have that remotely sound like what I have been describing.
And finally, the reason why this post has taken so long. I have been wrestling with the words and ideas that have been swirling around inside of me for the past couple months. I feel a mixture of embarrassment, anger, frustration, grief, and shock when I think about this. Most of all, I feel pain. So pardon me for however this comes out, as I still have yet to even fully put my own feelings into words that I feel describe what is going on. I want to pause here to take a beat to breath and also assure you that whatever comes next is not nearly as bad what you may be thinking now as you read. A lot of this stems from being blindsided by the whole circumstance, but I guess I should just get on with saying it. Last pause, as everything that we write in here is private, I want to emphasize how extremely private this is and would really appreciate your discretion. I just need someone to tell, and as I have made a vow to be more vulnerable with you, this is something I find very important. So as things in the world have gotten crazy, the craziness and destruction impact more than just the outside world, but those close to us. A few weeks after we graduated, my mom got news from work that she was going on furlough for an indefinite amount of time, and her position would be re-evaluated at the end of July, hoping that things would start settling back to normal. So for a few months, my mom was kind of in limbo, but she used that time to get a lot of priorities in order. She got pretty involved in church with the band and started singing more again, something that she hadnât done in quite a few years. She also started helping with a charity my godparents started and found a lot of comfort helping out those with less in her time of uncertainty. But we thought all of this would be temporary, after all, she has been with the company for over 30 years and has been more than loyal. But at the beginning of July, she got a call from her boss saying they were gonna have to let her go. I know people lose jobs all the time, and even more so in todayâs climate, but you never see it happening to your family and those that you love so dearly. When she called me to let me know, I could hear her holding back tears, trying to be strong. I was honestly at a loss for words when she told me. I felt enraged at the company for doing this to my mom. I was worried about what would happen to my parentsâ plans for their own future, as my mom was kinda the bread winner for the family, which comes with having one parent owning and operating a small business all by himself. But mainly I just felt as if I had shattered into a million pieces that were flung into the wind. I love no person more in this world than my mom. She, no matter how much I didnât want to hear it, taught me right from wrong, pushed me to reach for MY dreams, sacrificed WAY more of herself than any person should for another human. She is both the strongest and kindest person I have and ever will meet, yet there I was, on the phone with her during a really dark time in her life, and she was holding back tears still trying to be strong for me. I feel helpless in a situation like this! I am barely making enough money to look out for myself, let alone do anything to help my parents out! I know I can say nice, encouraging words, but I want to fix things and make everything good for them, for her. Without my parents, I would be nothing. So to see them go through this trial has really kind of messed me up inside for a couple months now. My mom has thought about going back to school because she never finished her degree, but schooling is NOT cheap. She is 53 now, she should be thinking about retirement in a few years and life outside of work right now, not going back to school just to make ends meet. I applaud her for how well she has taken this and how she continues to persevere in the face of opposition. I cried like a baby after I got off the phone with her that day in July. My parents are my rock in this life and I ache to see them in pain. I am lucky to have a brother that is certified in talking through bad experiences. He has been a big help. If there is a bright spot from all this, our family has grown a lot closer during these past few months, which hurts just a little bit more that I canât go see my family and give my mom a hug. I miss them so much. The other positive is now my mom is free to pursue a work-life that she can choose. For too long she was doing this job to provide for us boys, but now she can do what has been on her heart. Luckily, she has a great support system around her that is in constant prayer for her and my dad. She got a call from their lead pastor a week ago, where they have a position they thought would be perfect for her coordinating the various community outreach programs the church is involved with. She never expressed interest in the position or sought out anything of the likes, she just popped into their mind and she has a meeting with the board of the church coming up. So there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I know this is probably by far the longest post I have written, but I needed to talk with someone about it. Again, I ask for discretion as we havenât told many people about it. I am not sure who, if any of our friendsâ parents know, as this is not my place to be telling others. As you are my confidant, I trust you with anything that I say and know that you will be there to support. So if others are to know, it should be and will be on my parentsâ terms. Sorry for the heavy dump I just took here, but I appreciate you listening. I also hate to end on such a negative note, but it doesnât feel right to end any other way. I will leave you with this, love those close to you and give your family an extra long hug when you see them next. Who knows what will happen between now and the next time.
With much love,
A

Manchester City's Kyle Walker faces disciplinary action for breaking lockdown rules
Manchester City defender Kyle Walker faces disciplinary action from the Premier League champions after tabloid The Sun said he breached Britainâs lockdown rules by hosting a party during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Sun said England international Walker, 29, had also invited two call girls to the party at his Cheshire home last week, shortly before he had urged people on Twitter to follow government guidelines on social distancing.
Walker apologised for his actions in a statement to the newspaper on Sunday, saying he had let down his family, friends, club, supporters and the public.
âManchester City FC are aware of a story in a tabloid newspaper regarding the private life of Kyle Walker in relation to a breach of the UK lockdown and social distancing rules,â City said in a statement released to British media.
âFootballers are global role models, and our staff and players have been working to support the incredible efforts of the National Health Service and other key workers in fighting the effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus, in any way we can. Kyleâs actions in this matter have directly contravened these efforts. We are disappointed to hear the allegations, note Kyleâs swift statement and apology, and will be conducting an internal disciplinary procedure in the coming days,â said City.
Global virus infections exceed a million, with more than 65,000 deaths, a Reuters tally showed.

Elite Affiliate Pro Review
Elite Affiliate Pro Review (Igor Kheifets Course)
Igor is your regular YouTube making a living off affiliate marketing, and he claims to make over $60,000 every week while still having time to develop and release different courses on how to do the same.
He offers you a free course with a few strategies as a taste of his actual courses, and if you want the real âsecretsâ, you can then purchase his product.
If you have no experience in affiliate marketing, let me tell you that there really isnât any âsecret solutionsâ or shortcut method in this business. Any guru claiming that is usually either a completely made up approach that will just not work or a rebrand of some traditional method they sell with a new image.
There are new approaches, of course, and they can work. However, thatâs far from a âsecret surefire method to get 60k every weekâ. Even the best strategies still require work and dedication before generating any money.
That doesnât mean this course is a scam or that Igor isnât a legitimate businessman. Heâs worked with recognized names like Anthony Morrison, but that doesnât mean he canât use clickbait to sell a course.
Itâs a good sign, but it also doesnât mean his course is good. $997 is really expensive, so make sure to read here before you decide to spend it.
Whoâs the author?
Pat owns a popular blog, as I already told you. Heâs used it for sharing reports on his income for several years, and heâs made it clear heâs making good money on affiliate marketing. One of the largest accounts tied to him is a Bluehost one earning him $110 for every person signing up, and he promotes content related to starting blogs.
Heâs made more than $3.5 million in affiliate revenues as confirmed by his site, and he has a weekly podcast thatâs around 400 episodes. His topics cover a vast spectrum, including Amazon and Kindle marketing, general entrepreneurship, trends, and tips.
His YouTube channel is also quite impressive. He shares videos on a lot of different content, and his has nearly 200,000 subscribers. His videos cover passive income tips, reviews, and updates on his life.
Heâs also de owner of several courses on business ideas, podcasts, brand building, etc. The cheapest one is $249; the most expensive is $999.
Reviewing Elite Affiliate Pro
Main content
The course is mostly a collection of several videos covering different sides of running an affiliate marketing business.
You learn about how you can reach out to your target audience, including how to create good emails, pre-sale pages, and even advanced stuff like how to use scarcity.
You also learn how to find offers both in Clickbank and with webinars, and thereâs a class on general high-conversion CPA offers. Thereâs one more module about how to scale your conversions by offering bonuses.
Bonuses
You get several bonuses with this course, and theyâre actual bonuses, unlike other courses saying that a private FB group is a bonus.
The largest addition here is a bonus mini-course divided in 3 phases.
The first one teaches you how to plan and set up your campaigns. Itâs all about email marketing, explained through 6 steps. The second phase is a case study of how Igor made $100,000 with his email marketing approach; he used a webinar to catch clients, and the following emails increased his sales. The last phase is a tutorial on how to get traffic from your campaigns; note this section is solely about paid traffic, so donât expect SEO and similar approaches.
There are other bonuses as well, including tips for you to revive a failed email list, Igorâs recommendations regarding affiliate promotions (donât take them as rules since theyâre probably oversaturated), and some email swipes.
Thereâs also a bunch of templates you can use for your affiliate marketing campaigns and a list with Igorâs favorite CPA networks.
Coaching
You can reach out to Igor on his live webinars if you have any questions needing answers. Itâs your gateway to solve any doubts about the contents inside the course or just about the business model in general.
The only issue about this support is that you need to schedule yourself so that you can be available during the callâs time. That can be hard while youâre starting out since youâre going through applying all the lessons, and itâs sadly the time youâre probably going to need it the most.
Final Verdict
Igor is a pretty good affiliate marketer, and the numbers heâs done speak for themselves and are certainly amazing. Heâs not a newcomer or a fake entrepreneur, and you can see that in the way he speaks as much as you can see it on his reputation and occasional associates.
In fact, the content inside this course is actually good, but it feels like a random conglomerate of different lessons mashed together. It has good content, but it needs work on its structure, and its seeming randomness may be confusing for newcomers.
Finally, thereâs a money-back guarantee, but itâs a bit of an annoying process. You can ask for a refund, but you need to provide your 6-step checklist as proof it didnât work before you get a refund.
In other words, refunds are based on your performance and proving that you failed despite this courseâs teachings.
Itâs not as bad as not having a refunds policy or asking students to watch only like 10% of your program, but itâs definitely worth considering before getting this course.
Best Alternative
If youâre OK with the content and price, then go for it, as youâll probably learn at least a couple new tips.
However, you can get my favorite course for $800 less if you buy Savage Affiliates by Franklin Hatchett. Unlike a focused course like Igorâs, Savage Affiliates is a single stop you can use to get all the knowledge necessary to start your affiliate business on solid footing.
Beside what youâll learn from Igor, it also has modules on SEO, Google, Snapchat, even chat bots, and it covers both free and paid advertisement in those branches and a lot more that would take me an entire section to mention entirely.
Franklin Hatchett is also a winner from the 2 Comma Club, and heâs one of the most famous faces in eCommerce and affiliate marketing, so youâre not lowering your authorâs status.
I hope you found this review useful and if you have any questions, please comment down below. Iâll be more than happy to assist you.
Once again, thanks for reading my Elite Affiliate Pro Review and I wish you the best of luck.

These Must-Have Apps Can Help You Save Money Online
(TNS)âThe thrill of shopping on your phone or online, of course, is that it makes stocking up on groceries, buying a rug for the apartment or even shopping on a Friday night after a glass of wine or two all that much easier.
But if you want to get the very best price, step back and take a few extra minutes before you hit checkout. It can be as simple as just doing a quick Google search of prices at various retailers to save $50 or $100 on a big-ticket item, like a bedroom dresser.
Weâve got plenty of websites and apps that offer extra rewards and price checks to help savvy spenders get a sweet deal, too.
âIf you really want to get your cheapskate on, maybe thereâs a coupon code,â says Rick Broida, who lives in Commerce Township, Mich., and writes âThe Cheapskate Blogâ for CNET.com.
Broida, who held workshops at the Detroit Public Library main branch and the Plymouth Public Library as part of Money Smart Week, says many of these tricks can turn into âfree moneyâ pretty quickly.
If you want to shop smarter, ask a few questions.Â
Is this really the best price ever on Amazon? âPrices on Amazon fluctuate a lotâa lot,â says Broida, 50.
Take time to research previous prices, which amazingly is fairly easy to do if youâre shopping for a tote, a toaster or even a dash camera in order to dispute a traffic ticket. An online service called Camel Camel Camel tracks the price history of more than 18 million products sold on Amazon. As a result, you can decide if you really want to buy the item now or wait. The site has a price history chart to show you fluctuations in the cost, Broida says. Prices are updated regularly, but Camel Camel Camel notes on its site that a consumer should always verify that information on Amazon, too, before making any purchase.
Itâs also possible to set a price alert using Camel Camel Camel for an item that youâd want to buy at a specific price. You copy and paste the link for the product you spot online onto the Camel Camel Camel site. Youâd give your email, as well as the price youâd like to pay and youâd get a price alert in the future.
Knowing a price historyâand getting price alertsâcan be particularly useful at hectic shopping seasons such as Easter, Motherâs Day, Amazon Prime Day in July and Black Friday weekend, which now kicks off on Thanksgiving.
Shoppers are tapping into another service called Honey at www.joinhoney.com. Honey offers shoppers a way to automatically find and apply coupons at checkout. Some shoppers love Honey for coupons, but Honey also has a feature called Droplist that notifies you when the price drops on a product at a variety of stores, including Best Buy, Target, Chewy and others.
Honey has a tool that helps you find the best price for a product on Amazon and a tool that allows you to track a productâs price history so you can figure out the best time to buy, as well. When you use a coupon code in some cases, Honey will earn a small commission from the merchant and then pass along some of those earnings to members.
If youâre new to any program, make sure to read up on the terms and conditions. You want to know how you get your rebates, what information you must hand over, as well as any possible fees. Read the privacy policy to see what kind of data might be shared.
Itâs also not a bad idea to review any complaints online about money-saving services, including taking a look at the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org.
Adam Levin, founder CyberScout, which offers identity and data defense services, says linking a mobile app to your credit or debit card carries some risk, even if a service offers bank-level security and encrypts data.
âWhen breaches have become the third certainty in life, and even big banks get hacked, there is no sure thing,â Levin says. âIf the site gets hacked or your smartphone is compromised or stolen, your payment card and financial data could be exposed, leaving you a target for account takeover.â
Make sure to enable two-factor authentication on your mobile device. Never download third-party apps, which could be infected by malware. Always go to a trusted source like Apple or Google Play. Use long and strong passwords that donât repeat across accounts and sites.
Is there a way to get extra points or rewards? Many Generation X shoppers and others know about rewards with their credit cards. Busy young families often use shopping platforms such as Ebates.com, BeFrugal.com and TopCashback.com to get cash back when shopping online with major retailers. (Rakuten owns Ebates and is moving forward with plans to change the Ebates branding to Rakuten.)
Shoppers appreciate getting money back through Ebates via a check or a PayPal account, but there are even some strategies to use there. Ebates rates change daily, so some consumers say it can be better to shop when Ebates offers double the rebates and includes more in-store offers when you use a store-issued credit card.
Newer shopping tools provide savings, too. Dosh is a cashback app that pays you some money back when you use a credit card or debit card thatâs linked to Dosh. Participating retailers include Samâs Club, Sephora, Vineyard Vines, and others. Percentages of the cash given back vary by merchant.
Doshâwhich is based in Austin, Texasâsays its consumer financial services platform delivers automatic cash back to consumers when they dine, shop or book hotels.
Retailers like such platforms as a way to build return business and customer loyalty. You can transfer your Dosh cash to bank accounts or PayPal, or donate to a charity from the app, according to Dosh.
Some shoppers are even searching online for answers to questions like: Is the Dosh app legit? Broida and others who have used the smartphone app say itâs not a scam.
âSounds too good to be true, but it isnât,â Broida says.
To be sure, your friends might be pushing you to sign up with Dosh because they get $5 in rewards for each friend that signs up and links a verified card. Be careful of any fantastic pitches on social media, though, as one consumer complained to the Better Business Bureau about a promise of receiving $300 for just downloading the Dosh app. That unauthorized deal, not surprisingly, never worked out.
Remember, if you want to get the cash back, your online purchase must be paid with a card that is linked to your account at the time of purchase.
Thereâs the Drop app, a Toronto-based startup that was launched in 2016. Drop lets you build up rewards to redeem for gift cards to be used at retailers such as Amazon, lululemon, Apple, Starbucks and others.
Again, you have to link the Drop app to your debit or credit cards, and youâd select your favorite stores where you like to shop, such as Uber, Tim Hortons, Starbucks, McDonaldâs and Walmart, in order to build points.
Now that gas prices have been climbing for the past several weeks, consumers may be rethinking how they get discounts at the pump, too. Gasbuddy.com has its own discount program called âPay with Gas Buddy.â To save money, you need to connect your checking account to the Gas Buddy account. Then, you receive a rewards card that youâd swipe when you buy gas at the pump. The program is free to join. Youâd save 10 cents per gallon off of your first fill-up and five cents off every gallon after that.
GasBuddy says its card works at 90 percent of stations across the country, including brands like Shell and Mobil. But you wonât get the discount at Costco, Samâs Club, ARCO, BJâs Gas and H-E-B stations.
Can I save more after I bought it? Or booked it? Maybe. Some price-monitoring services will search for a lower price after you bought something, too. Earny provides refunds if something drops in price after you purchase it. The service covers items bought at participating retailers, such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Costco Wholesale, Nordstrom, Nike, Kohlâs, Macyâs, Home Depot and Zappos.
Because Amazon doesnât have its own price protection policy, you must use a price-protected card in order to receive refunds on these items, according to the Earny site. Amazon at one time did offer price protection: If a productâs price dropped after you purchased it, you could get a refund for the difference. But that policy doesnât exist anymore, making it useful to use some outside apps, Broida says.
The searching for better deals is done based on receipts in your inbox. There is a cost: Earny collects 25 percent of the refunds only after you have successfully received a refund. While the price might seem steep to bargain shoppers, it may not be a bad idea for someone who doesnât have the time to search for a better price and then take advantage of the limited window offered by a retailer who promises to adjust for lower prices, Broida says.
Earny scans your purchases and submits refund requests when thereâs an eligible price difference. But are you comfortable giving an outsider access to your emails to scan for your receipts?
Another price monitoring service: Paribus.co (not dot-com) from Capital One, which tracks goods bought online as well as hotel room rates booked through sites that include Expedia, Priceline, Marriott and Hilton. You sign up with the email you use for online shopping receipts and Paribus scans your inbox for receipts from stores that it monitors. Paribus has no service charge.
Broida recommends using price monitoring services after youâve booked a hotel for a trip, too. He notes that thereâs a 40 percent chance that your room rate will drop after you book it.
If the price goes down, he says, you can be alerted to the lower price and then cancel your old reservation and rebook in many cases. Travel-related services include: Hopper.com, Pruvo.net, Getservice.com and AutoSlash.com (for car rentals).
Is the little extra effort worth it? It very well could be for some budget-conscious consumers. Every dollar can add up over time.Â

#111: Can Minimalism Be Cozy?
As much as we love to simplify and declutter, weâre not aiming for that ultra sleek and sometimes sterile look thatâs often associated with minimalism. So weâve been trying out a step-by-step process for creating a minimalist space that still feels warm, cozy, and inviting. Spoiler alert: Sherry loves the easy formula and is basically going nuts on the whole house. Weâre also starting to bring our vision for the duplex kitchens to life and â curveball alert! â weâre steering clear of white cabinetry. You can hear why we donât think itâs right for the duplex, along with learning how weâre getting a custom look on a serious budget. Sherry also ups her underwear game and John conquers one of lifeâs little daily annoyances.
You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, and Spotify â or listen to it below! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we referenced. Note: If youâre reading in a feed reader, you may have to click through to the post to see the player.
Whatâs New
As you may have seen in our duplex style inspiration post, the picture above is one of our biggest inspirations when we envision the duplex kitchens â and after our trip to Ikea last week, we think weâve found all of the materials to make it happen (on a nice affordable budget).
Below are some photos of us trying to picture things in Ikea (yes, we brought our tile samples with us â and even our paint swatches). On the left you can see the combo that mimics the look from our inspiration photo above using this tile and Ikeaâs new Askersund cabinets. On the right is the other combo weâre trying with colorful cabinets (Ikeaâs Kallarp in a glossy âgray-turquoiseâ) and a similar patterned tile in a different colorway.
Itâs a little hard to get a sense of tile pattern in those shots above (plus, Ikeaâs lighting is blergggg), so these images should give you a better sense of the combos. Hereâs the first with the wood cabinets (we wonât use metal pulls like the ones below though) and our blue tile.
And here are the glossy blue-gray cabinets with our pink/gray tile for the kitchen on the other side of the duplex.
Weâre working on a post with more info on all of our selections so far for the duplex (including bathroom tile, paint colors, and more) but weâve mentioned that weâre planning to pair both kitchens with some light counters (most likely granite or quartz) and some combo of open shelves and upper cabinets. Weâre thinking weâll do the upper cabinets white in both spaces as well.
And if youâre looking for more info about Semihandmade, below you can see some of the styles they carry. We priced out the unfinished ones (the first two below) and they were $400 â $500 more than the Ikea ones shown above (which already come factory finished/sealed). I also looked into the more colorful beaded options, but they were about $1100 more, so weâre still holding out for the right project to try them out. Maybe one of our own homeâs bathroom renovationsâŚ
And now the photos youâve all been waiting for â the before & after of my key ring, thanks to paring down my keys and my membership/loyalty cards (hereâs that Key Ring app I used to digitize my infrequently used cards). This is the leather key organizer I bought on Etsy too. It holds up to 6 keys and/or some loyalty cards.
Also, as a PSA, itâs not recommended that you post pictures of your keys online (someone with enough know-how can duplicate them from a photo). So Iâve digitally altered the tooth pattern on the keys shown here. No oneâs copying our kitty key on my watch!
Cozy Minimalism
Thereâs a quick peek at some of the spaces Sherry has started simplifying in our house based on the process in Myquillyn Smithâs upcoming book Cozy Minimalist Home. You can pre-order it now, and follow Myquillyn (aka âThe Nesterâ) on her blog The Nesting Place for more info and freebies. You can also hear her on Episode #58 of our podcast where we all talk about how much she shares of her children online.
Hereâs a shot of our kitchen island from back when we revealed our kitchen renovation a couple of years ago.
And hereâs that same angle today with the counters looking much more clear. Admittedly itâs a less âprettyâ photograph because it lacks those visual anchor points that a typical styled photo has⌠but in real life, it makes the room feel open and more ready for anything â from spreading out homework to baking cookies.
Hereâs the island from the other angle, which shows that thereâs still plenty to look at in this room (it doesnât feel stark, just less styled and filled up than it did before). We also like how clearing the far end of the island lets your eye see through to the living room more easily (the kids are often in there while weâre in the kitchen, so itâs nice not to have stuff blocking the view anymore).
Hereâs another example of how we simplified but it still feels cozy â just less styled and full. Before we had lots of decorative objects on the counter (the cutting board, the flowers, the clock, even the sugar and flour containers that weâve not actually used sugar or flour from in years).
Hereâs the same angle today. Thereâs still a decorative object (the plant) but weâve replaced those unused canisters with ones that we actually do use (popcorn & cereal get stolen from them daily). These used to sit on the opposite end of the counter, which felt cluttered whenever we plopped down our grocery bags there to unload them, so now that space is freed up to be used for that without feeling as cramped. The breathing room feels great.
Moving into the living room, this is what the built-in bookcases looked like after we made them and filled them to the brim with colorful books and objects (learn how we made them here!).
While we enjoyed that full and colorful look for a few years, we both felt ready to simplify things a little so that wall feels a little less heavy and packed. Here are the bookcases today after we donated the books we were done reading/referencing and generally simplified things. You can see there are also fewer frames on the left wall too.
You can also hear a longer discussin about the âcontroversyâ of books as decor objects (including the backward book trend) in Episode #85.
Like the kitchen counter photos, Iâd argue that the more minimal looks donât always register as better/more interesting photographs (it didnât help that I was taking the new photos during thunderstorms â thank goodness for long exposures!) but in real life it has been a nice change of pace. Just having less âstuffâ around has made the house feel lighter and less overfilled.
And now, we must end this section with the SNL sketch that we referenced. Nuni and Nuni are minimalists, right?

Weâre Digging
Above are the three Third Love bras that Sherry has bought over the last two years and canât stop talking about â a classic plunge, a strapless bra, and a fancy lacy one. They each come in different colors, but Sherry (unsurprisingly) chose the blackest/darkest option for each one.
And hereâs that Daily Beast article I was so fascinated by: âHow An Ex-Cop Rigged McDonaldâs Monopoly Game And Stole Millions.â Itâs no surprise that itâs been optioned already and will become a Matt Damon/Ben Affleck produced movie!
If youâre looking for something weâve dug in a past episode, but donât remember which show notes to click into, hereâs a master list of everything weâve been digging from all of our past episodes. You can also see all the books weâve recommended on our Book Club page.
And lastly, a big thank you to Universal Furniture for sponsoring this episode. Learn more about their new Spaces collection specially designed for smaller homes at UniversalFurniture.com/YHL.

Sherry also ups her underwear game and John conquers one of lifeâs little daily annoyances.

Whatâs New
As you may have seen in our duplex style inspiration post, the picture above is one of our biggest inspirations when we envision the duplex kitchens â and after our trip to Ikea last week, we think weâve found all of the materials to make it happen (on a nice affordable budget).
Below are some photos of us trying to picture things in Ikea (yes, we brought our tile samples with us â and even our paint swatches). On the right you can see the combo that mimics the look from our inspiration photo above using this tile and Ikeaâs new Askersund cabinets. On the left is the other combo weâre trying with colorful cabinets (Ikeaâs Kallarp in a glossy âgray-turquoiseâ) and a similar patterned tile in a different colorway.
