My favorite aspect of Adachi manga is the quietness associated with the heaviest parts of the story. Incidentally, it’s also a very difficult thing to translate to anime, but it can feel forever satisfying if it sticks the landing.
Amazingly enough, MIX does just that.
I was initially skeptical about the weight of this show’s turning point, as on the surface it feels like a watered-down idea of the challenges our heroes face in Touch, H2, and Cross Game. But as Adachi ages, it only makes sense for him to relay a story about paternal mortality and its affect on the younger generation (represented by us readers, naturally).
(Spoilers, btw)
When Eisuke dies, it not only devestates each member of the Tachibana family, but potentially ruptures the family dynamic as well. Otomi and Sou lose their father for a second time, Mayumi loses her partner, and Touma loses the last member of his blood-related family. It’s an especially devastating moment for him, because now he faces the challenge of sharing a household of people who could legally consider themselves strangers to him.
How difficult that must be to face, especially when Touma loves all of them so much. Not only does he have to be the strong male figure at school and on the field, but also at home where it’s unclear from where the financial support will come. It’s also about his own self-preservation, as he can’t let on any issues for fear of him losing his family. It’s when Otomi tries to get him to let out his emotions that I almost started bawling as well.
It feels unfair that MIX is going to end like this for at least a long while. There isn’t enough material to cover a new season’s worth of episodes without projecting beyond published chapters, and considering Adachi’s slow production timeline, we might not get to that point for years. How ironic is it that Adachi’s most blithe and least essential baseball epic also has the darkest finale?
Well, I can’t say that quite yet. One more episode left this season. I hope I enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed the last few.

What a fucking joke. The merge fucked everything up. Now, I can't even use my Digital codes that I originally gotten when I brought the Digital/Blu Ray/DVD sets of Mix: Meisei Story (First season) and Fruits Basket (2019) (First and second seasons). Funimation and Crunchyroll should have stayed as separate licensing and dubbing companies.

Oh…. Well, it’s over for Crunchyroll I guess

Maybe its because the show is working with material I haven’t seen before, or that the content is captivating because we’re approaching the turning point of the story, but I think this was the best ep of MIX yet. The gameplay, the tension, the stakes—they were all delivered magnificently and on par with the best of Adachi adaptations.
It’s the conclusion of Meisei vs Seinan, and the ep starts with a “smarter-than-you” play where Meisei’s coach defies traditional high school baseball strategy by allowing his batter to swing away after a leadoff single. A bunt would be expected and fine, but he reasons that a successful sacrifice would leave first base open, taking the bat out of his best hitter’s (Souichirou’s) hands at a critical juncture. But even after the batter strikes out, Coach Nishimura decides to walk Sou anyway, pulling the odds in his favor.
The ep’s best moment, and probably the best moment of the entire show, was the younger Nishimura’s home run. Flabbergasted with his success, Nishimura stands still in the box as the ball hits the left-field foul pole, and the normally demonstrative ace stays expressionless jogging around the bases. Just like his dad stood when he took ball four against Tatsuya thirty years prior, the younger Nishimura figures out through his own success that he’s not the hero of this story. And through the silence in his own head (and by extension the show’s production), he learns to make peace with that fact.
Adachi stories create such beautiful tension in silence, and this moment with barely any audio whatsoever hits that same tension. No narration, no crowd noise, no expressions—and a quick joke at the end to bring us back to earth. Just masterful work from a masterful artist faithfully rendered.
It’s possible I’m grading on a curve, but this is the best ep of anime I’ve seen this season and certainly one of the best this year. It’s the reason why I continue coming back to Adachi stories, and I certainly hope the quality of this ep is a sign of progress to come. But even if MiX regresses to its mean, y’all should know that they nailed it for at least one episode. See you next week.
