“Be careful, Botan-chan!”

She beams, scurrying towards the prep table. “I will.”

This is kind of fun! She’d never had a part-time job before. In high school, when her classmates hurried off after the last bell, leaving the cleaning to her, she’d felt… envious. Like she was missing out.

“I’ve got this.” Pushing back her sleeves, Botan leverages the pot of rice off the counter, but gravity takes hold and it is suddenly much heavier. With a crash that has every saenome in the cafeteria half out of their chairs, talismans at the ready, Botan grimaces,

“I didn’t have it…”

Okay so let me just kick this off with: what I'm about to say is just a stream of thought that I think warrants being expressed, even if incompletely.

To start, I don't trust practitioners who claim to have practiced witchcraft for more than a few years and yet maintain a steadfast, paranoid/distrustful view of others / Others. For one, I've long held a certain ease of nerves in my own path, which I can only surmise is a direct result of the strong and trusting relationships I've built with the spirits I work with. That is to say: the more time and energy I've dedicated to my craft, the more secure and at peace I've come to feel in my day-to-day activities and mundane going-ons.

Now that's not to say that I think everyone who practices witchcraft will reach similar states of security or zen (there are far too many paths to take for everyone to reach the exact same common ground), but it is a commonality I have found among those I've performed workings with - whether it was a lasting or temporary affect.

Thus taking from personal experiences, I have, as of late, found myself more distrustful of witches, occultists. and practitioners who claim firm or set bonds with Sprit, most often spanning years and years, and remain ever defensive and on edge about the slightest inconvenience or happenstance.

For example, let's take the "Winter isn't real" person I'd unfortunately met just the other day. I'd previously overheard her in the store talking with an associate about her "many years" of experience with witchcraft and random, jilted commentary about the importance of protecting oneself from negative, antagonist spirits approaching under the guise of a friend or stranger with malicious intent. So before she'd even discovered me in the corner, I'd already surmised that I had no interest in talking with her. Because while it is all well and good to have boundaries and wards in place to deal with whatever may come, it is quite another to go out into the world and expect such things to cling and stick to you simply for existing.

But, as always, where there are extremes, there are sure to be more temperate middle grounds, and that's more often than not where I find myself. To be on either end - approaching all with distrust or naive, blind optimism - is unsuitable to my mind and speaks of an imbalance of practical experience and knowledge that I have little interest in being subjected to the discussion or company of.

I suppose that's the bluntest form of the matter, but my thoughts on it seem to stem and flow haphazardly like water even as I type this. Perhaps there's another, better form my words could, and very well may yet, take if I were to try again, but for now this is as they are.

Botan’s door is closed. Yu slows her steps so as not to disturb her mistress, quiet in her room with Hyoma. Haori said things were looking promising between the two of them, and while Yu can’t really see what Botan might see in the young idiot, there’s no question that he is warming up to her. They’re probably in there studying now, or at least Botan is. Hyoma is not much of a reader, so she pictures him resting there, gazing fondly at her as her lips move with the words-

“Bend over.” Yu stops in her tracks. That’s Botan’s voice, and a note of command she rarely hears- “If this is uncomfortable for your knees, I’ve got a cushion somewhere.”

“My knees are fine,” Hyoma insists, and Yu can hear the smile in his voice. “I don’t need any help.” And yet there’s a tension she doesn’t know how to interpret. She could go get Haori-

“Relax,” Botan chides. “You’re not going to be able to move with any power if you’re so tense.”

“I have plenty of power,” Hyoma pouts. “I am merely inexperienced.”

“You know there’s only one cure for that,” Botan says, and a suspicious silence falls, a quiet rustling the only sound.

Yu can take it no longer, her hand moving to throw the door open before she can even think. “My lady! Not now, not before-”

Two startled faces stare up at her from several feet apart, an array of cards scattered on the tatami between them. Hyouma has one in his hand, a green border and black calligraphy visible between his fingers. Botan frowns and sets down her phone. “But you and Kazuki and Nagi won’t play karuta with me, and I can’t beat Haori or Kushige. I just thought… Oh…” Her face pinks, horror dawning in her eyes. Yu wishes she could wrap herself up in her own web and disappear on the spot. “Yu!”

“I’m sorry, my lady.” She can’t look up from the ground, just backs out of the room. The others are going to be so disappointed in her.

No direct confession but that “if you think I’d look good in one, why don’t we get a closer look” followed by Botan grabbing Hyoma hand was cute as hell. Wasn’t expecting her to be that bold. But with someone as dense as Hyoma she had to 😂

I need season 3 NOW. They ended this right as things really got going with the story. Hyoma new door pull power looked sick, being able to damage Tenjinku was impressive. When Kai and the others showed up as backup they quickly dipped lol. Didn’t want problems with the entire city. Even the umbrellas aren’t that strong.

Botan waiting by Hyoma side the whole time he was unconscious in hospital was so sweet. Their relationship has been the best part of this season. Taken massive strides forward together.

Holy shit Kushige talked! Really cool hearing his voice for the first time.

Seems like in addition to the Warazamawashi stuff, there’s also going to be drama between the 3 great houses in the future. The Yamichata couldn’t have been blind to what the bureau of traditional music were planning. If they are working with the umbrellas, what’s their endgame?

A lot of steps forward in this season. I think the story and character stuff was way better in this one. Action scenes and animation still meh, but I mean who cares when the story is this good. I think the pacing during the final fight was a little drawn out and I would’ve liked to have got thru a couple episodes faster, but overall I’m pleased with the end result here.

This was my favourite Monday seasonal and I’m going to miss it. Looking at the scoring for each episode it seems like I’m not alone in that department either so hopefully we get a renewal confirmation 🤞
