SPRINGFIELD — Mychal Connolly’s connection to the subject of suicide is all too personal.

“I was talking with my friend Nate about ways to teach our kids about entrepreneurship,” he explained. “He had moved to Florida with his family and was back for a visit. We were talking about his business and how it was doing well. I was taking my family to Florida on vacation soon and thought we could connect, but with my family focused on theme parks, it never happened.”

After he got home, Connolly saw a post on Facebook alluding to a friend who had died, but it wasn’t clear who. When he reached out to learn more, he received a shock: Nate had taken his own life, in front of his wife.

“Nate was a quiet guy who stayed to himself, but that was his personality,” Connolly recalled. “His friends knew that about him. I knew that. There were no signs he was going through anything difficult in his life. Nothing suggested there was any issue troubling him. He left a wife and three kids.”

Now Connolly, in partnership with MHA and the Pioneer Valley Coalition for Suicide Prevention, is taking a message to the streets: suicide is preventable when people start talking. The message is getting out via Stand Out Truck, a business Connolly created that uses a mobile, digital messaging platform built into a truck that drives wherever a message can make the most impact.

“Our friends at the Pioneer Valley Coalition for Suicide Prevention made a grant to cover half of the cost of the campaign, and Stand Out Truck offered a discount,” said Kimberley Lee, MHA’s vice president of Resource Development & Branding. “All three organizations are working together to get the message out that suicide is preventable, continuing through the second week in October.”

Connolly explained that “Stand Out Truck takes the message directly to the streets where people in motor vehicles, on the sidewalk, or out in their yards can see it. I’ve known Kim Lee for several years, and MHA does a lot to aid suicide prevention, so Kim and I connected to see how we could work together specifically for Suicide Prevention Month. Stand Out Truck is uniquely mobile and, frankly, hard to miss, Lee added. “Silence breeds stigma, and we must take every opportunity to encourage each other to talk about how we’re feeling emotionally and raise awareness about resources for suicide prevention. If you list prices on your website or in your ads, make sure the price matches the consumer’s country of origin as well. Matching the currency will make it easier for consumers to make buying decisions.

3. Match the Location

You can also use location-specific language to make the message more personalized. For example, if you’re targeting consumers in a specific city, mention the city’s name in your messaging. 

Don’t forget to create well-designed location-based landing pages, too!

4. Match the Message

Effective marketing comes down to the right message at the right time in front of the right person. With geotargeting and geofencing, you can run different campaigns in different locations at the same time. Take the time to experiment!

Test out different ad language and see what better appeals to your target audience. 

You can also test sending traffic to a geo-targeted landing page versus a generic landing page to see which converts better.

5. Match the Visuals

Your visual elements matter as well. Try testing different color combinations and photos. See which appeal to your target audience to optimize conversions. For instance, we ran a two-part worldwide Facebook campaign (sans the U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe) and discovered that there was one specific color that converted better than any other when used as a simple background.

Capital One Coders gives middle school students a look at software development

Capital One awarded $10,000 in STEM education grants to four Fairfax County public schools.

On May 17, students from Holmes Middle School in Alexandria, Key Middle School in Springfield, Herndon Middle School and Cedar Lane High School in Vienna went to the financial giant’s McLean, Va. headquarters to demo new apps.

It was an event to cap Capital One Coders, a 10-week program bringing STEM education to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The program has expanded from two schools in 2014 to now 75 schools and nonprofits around the country.

Students are taught to work together and solve problems in teams, and learn the basic principles of software development from Capital One volunteers. They also get the chance to create mobile apps using the MIT App Inventor.It’s an introduction to tech jobs.

“The impact of technology and innovation on our economy and in our daily lives is undeniable,” said Erika Dean, Senior Director for Information Security at Capital One.

“We created the program to help middle school students develop a greater interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics during this critical period in their education,” said Dean.

Throughout the country, around 9,000 students have gone through the Capital One Coders program over the past four years, assisted by a team of nearly 2,500 volunteers who work one-on-one with the students to teach them how to code.

Capital One plans on awarding $170,000 as part of seventeen continuation grants across the program.

The program exists as part of Capital One’s Future Edge initiative, designed to bring small business development, and financial and digital literacy to help overcome the skills gap facing the current and future labor market. Through that program, $150 million in community grants will be awarded over five years as part of the initiative to help Americans gain the knowledge they will need to be successful in the 21st century.
