Son of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes found guilty of assault

The teenage son of former England and Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes has been found guilty of beating up a former school friend then taking picture of his injuries during an unprovoked ‘happy slap-style’ attack.

Arron Scholes, 19, left Robert Kemper, 21 with blood shot eyes and bruises all over his face after the unprovoked attack on the day of England’s 2-1 victory over Tunisia in last year’s World Cup.

During the attack at the Granby Arms in Uppermill, near Oldham, Greater Manchester, Mr Kemper – who was drunk – was seen lying flat on his back and offering no resistance whilst Scholes beat him about the face.

The teenager – eldest of three children to the Old Trafford favourite – was then seen ‘jumping up and down and laughing hysterically’ before taking a picture of the victim’s injuries on his mobile phone.

Mr Kemper who had known Scholes from their school days together -remembered little of the attack himself – but said in the moments leading up to the assault, he recalled saying ‘hello- alright mate!’ only to get ‘very little response.’

Scholes a striker for Manchester league club Royton Town denied assault by beating claiming he was acting in self defence but he was convicted after a trial.

At Tameside magistrates court the youngster a sports marketing management student at Manchester Metropolitan University who lives with his family in a luxury property in the village of Grasscroft looked crestfallen as his 43-year old father and also his mother Claire watched from the public gallery.

He will be sentenced next week after a report is prepared to see if he is suitable for community work.

The incident occurred on June 18 last year after Mr Kemper had been drinking heavily after watching world cup match with friends.

Mr Kemper told the hearing: ‘I had gone to a friend’s house to watch the football match during the World Cup.

‘Then after we watched the football we made our way to the Granby Arms with two friends and we had a few drinks.

‘We had a couple of beers and a mini bottle of vodka, so I had one or two glasses of vodka and sprite.

‘I had one pint at the Granby Arms. I walked in with my friends, went round to sit down and I noticed Arron he was in the other side of the pub and I went round to say ‘hello’.

‘I got a very little response, thought nothing of it, walked away and went back to my friends.

‘I knew Arron from school. Me and my friends were just discussing and talking about the football and then played some pool and I then went out for a cigarette.

‘There was a couple of other people who came out but I can’t remember who was there.

‘I was having a cigarette facing away from the door when I started receiving punches, I didn’t know where it was coming from or who was throwing them.

‘I was just aware of walking out in a daze a few minutes later, I was still unsure of what happened.

‘I was very confused about that incident – I just knew I was struck a number of times and I had not hit anybody else.

‘I didn’t know who did it at the time but I found out shortly afterwards. Both my eyes were swollen and there was congealed blood in my nose and ears.

‘I had blood shot eyes for a few weeks, swollen tender cheeks, swollen lips and bruising for a week or so.

‘I saw Arron last at his 18th birthday party.

‘We had been friends at school. We had fallen out but had made up in regards to that.

‘I’m not sure of the events of the night, I just know the injuries I sustained. I was in a daze and unconscious for most of it.

‘I’m not sure whether the injuries or the alcohol affected my memory.’

The court heard after the incident Mr Kemper sent Scholes a barrage of text messages saying: ‘Lol imagine that you bloodied my face.

‘Lol I’m trying to sort things out with you.

‘P*****, go one on one. Say something. I have got a black eye, f***** speak to me then, say something p****.

‘Say something or are you bent.

‘P*** me off say something goon. You seen my eye you c***, actually mad.’

Under cross examination Mr Kemper denied claims he called Scholes a ‘p*****’ earlier in the evening at a different pub and asked him outside for a fight.

He added: ‘There was no reason for me to do that.

‘We had discussions about trying to repair our relationship.

‘There was no reason for me to try starting something out of the blue.

‘I remember him being with other people. After it happened I did call him a ‘p****’. I said ‘you’re a p**** for hitting me from behind’.

‘At the time whilst I was being hit, I didn’t have time to see who was hitting me. I was stood next to one of the tables outside.

‘The blows to my head were severe and friends told me I received a sustained attack.

‘I did not square up to him. He was restrained by his friend who preventing him from striking me again.

‘The details are quite hazy. I would see no reason to provoke him. He had many friends with him. I had no idea what was happening.

‘I had to have everything explained to me by other punters at the pub. I was stumbling about in the pub afterwards.

‘I got a taxi to the hotel near my house to disguise my injuries and my father came to take me home.

‘When I got home I did send him some messages which I do regret sending. But I did not start a fight.’

Prosecutor Miss Lucy Bridge said: ‘Mr Kemper had been drinking prior to entering the pub and he had been watching the football during the World Cup.

‘When he entered the pub he saw the defendant and thought to himself that he would go and speak to him.

‘Before speaking with him, he went to the bar and was served by the landlady, he got his drink, then approached the defendant and asked him ‘are you alright, mate’.

‘The defendant gave no response and Mr Kemper walked away with his drink.

‘He was served one alcohol beverage until approximately 10pm when the landlady informed the victim of how intoxicated he was and she would not serve any more alcohol to him.

‘The victim went outside for a cigarette and the next thing he recalled was being punched to the head.

‘He didn’t see who punched him and he said he felt lightheaded and dizzy after the attack.

‘The landlady went outside and she saw the victim on his back being attacked by Arron Scholes.

‘She was able to say that Robert Kemper did not retaliate at any time and she described the situation as an unprovoked attack.

‘They both parted ways with Robert Kemper going left and Arron Scholes going right.

‘Arron Scholes was spoken to by the police on 24 October, where he said he went outside to confront Mr Kemper but then acted in self defence as he thought he was going to be assaulted.’

Landlady Debbie Hardy told the hearing: ‘Rob came in and he had a drink and about 20 minutes later Arron came in. Another man came over and put his arm around him and whispered something in his ear.

‘That’s when Arron ran straight out to assault Rob. I ran out after him but he was punching Rob. didn’t see Rob do anything at all other than trying to defend himself.

‘I saw two other males pull Arron away. Rob was dazed and was looking around as if to say ‘what happened’.

‘There was blood on his face. Two lads restrained Arron but he was jumping up and down and laughing hysterically at Rob. He got his phone out and took a picture of Robs face then proceeded to punch him again.

‘He started laughing when he looked at the picture). He put his phone towards Robs face and then hit him again. Rob was stood with his hands down beside him. At no point was Rob being threatening.

‘One of Arron’s friends said that Rob had called him a ‘p***y’ but I said no one deserved to be punished like that.’

Scholes, 19, told the hearing: ‘Earlier in the evening he was shouting things and it became obvious he was shouting at me. He was giggling and shouting in my direction. I couldn’t hear what he was saying but it was towards me.

‘He got more and more aggressive as the night went on. He said I was a p***y because I wouldn’t come outside. At the Granby my friend came over and said ‘Rob just started on me as I came through the door’.

‘I went over to confront Rob but he looked drunk and angry. I thought he was going to hit me so I defended myself by hitting him before he hit me. Everything about him was threatening. I never had a fight before, I never punched anybody before. I was just panicked and in fear but I was not laughing hysterically. There was just a bit of a scuffle.’

But district judge Sam Goozee said: ‘What’s not in dispute is that you had both been drinking that evening but Robert Kemper was more candid about it than you. You seemed evasive when challenged and the only person being aggressive was yourself.

‘You have given evidence to paint the picture there was tension between you and Robert Kemper and that justified you punching him as you did but this is not supported by other evidence.

‘Maybe your own recollection is clouded by alcohol. There was no suggestion Robert wanted a fight earlier in the evening.’

Arron’s father Paul, 44, who was capped 66 times by England, won 11 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues with United.

He has another son with Claire, Aiden, who is 13 and has autism.

Last September the football legend stepped in at his son’s league match against Stockport Georgians in the Manchester Premier League match when Royton found themselves short of players.

In his autobiography Scholes: My Story, the former Red wrote of his family: ‘For all the benefits that professional football has brought me, none of them would mean a thing to me without my family, my wife Claire, my sons Arron and Aiden, and my daughter Alicia.

‘My new generation of Red Devils are our three kids who keep Claire and me extremely busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

‘I know I’m bound to say this about my own children but we think they’re brilliant and love them to bits. Arron and Alicia are fantastic with Aiden.

‘It can’t be easy having a brother in his situation but they cope with it brilliantly.’

The Samsung Has Been Announced A Galaxy S6 Edge+ Hands – On Review

Samsung has announced that it has no plans to release the Galaxy Note 5 in the UK, so those who shoot on the company's big-screen smartphones may look at the Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Basically at a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge, introduced at this year's Mobile World Congress, the S6 Edge+ adds a bet with a larger 5.7-inch display, more memory and a larger battery. There are also dual display features added in the form of Samsung's new "Apps Edge" feature.

We've already experienced the Galaxy S6 Edge and see if it's worth replacing the Galaxy Note 5, or if you should start thinking about using the iPhone 6 Plus.

Design

Dumping the leather case seen on last year's Galaxy Note 4, fortunately, Samsung is equipped with the same metal and glass design as the Galaxy S6 for the Galaxy S6 Edge + and comes with a fingerprint scanner. The Galaxy S6 Edge + is definitely more valuable than last year's model, but it's a bit too shiny for our taste.

In terms of size, the S6 Edge + is 154x76x6.9mm, and despite its upgradeability, it is still slimmer than the original S6 Edge. It is much lighter than its appearance and weighs only 153 grams. However, it is undeniable that this is a heavy device and we try to hold it comfortably with one hand.

Another minor complaint is the ability of the phone to pick up dirt. After holding the phone for a few minutes, the Samsung representative prompts us to clean it before shooting, because the glossy “champagne” on the phone covers the back and is almost completely stained by the fingerprint, which is a little degrading its appearance.

Screen

The Galaxy S6 Edge + features a 5.7-inch 2440x1560 QHD Super AMOLED display with the same dual-edge experience on its smaller counterparts.

With a pixel density of 518ppi, which is lower than the original S6 Edge's 577ppi, the display is stunning, providing clear text and images, vibrant colors and outstanding viewing angles, surrounded by an unusual dual screen.

Performance

The Galaxy S6 Edge + has the same 64-bit eight-core Exynos 7 processor as the original Galaxy S6 Edge.

We haven't placed the Galaxy S6 Edge+ at all, but we have no complaints about performance. The app loads quickly, the camera opens very fast, and the general sliding and stimuli prove to be as smooth as you think.

Software

Just as the processor doesn't see the upgrade, you'll find almost the same software experience on the Galaxy S6 Edge+. The phone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop and comes with Samsung's new user interface, removing the large amount of British media coverage found on the Galaxy S6 Edge last year.

There are also some Samsung pre-loaded apps, such as S Health, S Voice and (Sigh) Galaxy Apps, which the company tells us that Samsung Pay will come to the phone soon. You can also find folders for Microsoft applications, including Word and Skype.

Camera

Galaxy Note Edge + has the same camera settings as the original S6 Edge. There is a 16MP f / 1.9 sensor with optical image stabilization and a 5 megapixel camera on the front.

In addition to ultra-fast loading, the camera can take images very quickly. In the first impression, the quality of the photos was as impressive as the quality of the original Galaxy S6 Edge, and the photos on the QHD screen looked very beautiful.

Battery Life And Storage

The Galaxy Note Edge + uses a 3,000mAh battery, which is larger than the 2,600mAh battery in its predecessor. We haven't tested this yet, but we will definitely do this in the full comment. Like the original, it supports wireless and fast charging, and Samsung claims that you can fill your device with liquid in less than 90 minutes.

There is no microSD slot on the Galaxy S6 Edge+, and the message will definitely be delayed. It has only 32GB or 64GB of internal memory, despite its original 128GB model.

First Impression

Many people are disappointed that Galaxy Note 5 has not entered the UK (at least), but Galaxy S6 Edge + should make news easier to swallow. It lacks the S Pen function, but does provide Samsung's dual display experience and is the same as its non-British brothers.

There are however a number of questions that a mobile phone & tablet repair technician gets asked on a regular basis. We thought it would be useful to share the answers to these questions.

Question 1

Can you just replace the glass only on my device screen rather than having to fit a new LCD as well?

Most phone & tablet screen replacements come as fully bonded units which mean that the glass and LCD are fused together in the frame, so the glass & LCD will be replaced in full. Glass only replacements can only be done in clean, workshop, dust free environments with specialist tools and equipment and on selected makes and models. This is why an iPhone Call Out Technician could not offer this option. There are occasions when a glass only repair can be done on some Samsung and iPad screens. These can only be done at the repair centre and will be specified on www.imend.com/repairs. We will only complete a glass only repair if we recommend that they are a stable and high quality repair.

Will the technician access my personal data and imagery during the repair?

No the technician will not do this. A call out technician will perform the repair in front of you so you can see exactly what he/she are doing and you can even put the passcode in your phone without the tech seeing it. My device has been immersed in water. Should I put it in a bag of rice?

No, a bag of rice will not remove the liquid from inside your device. It’s an urban myth. Rice has actually got the potential to clog your charging port and the starch in the rice could in fact accelerate the corrosion process and cause motherboard damage. Can my iPad be repaired onsite?

If you want a high quality repair we recommend that an iPad is not repaired onsite. iPads have a large surface area of glass and as such will cause a mess in people’s homes and offices with small, dangerous shards of glass that could be exposed as part of the screen removal. iPads also need to be heated up to high temperatures to remove the glue from the screen competently and then after the repair need to be cooled down and wrapped in a cling film/tape/clamps to ensure that the screen bonds with the frame effectively for several hours afterwards. Can you replace my screen if the device or housing on the back is bent?

After a device has been dropped or suffered impact there is a good chance that the frame has been bent or misshapen. A repair technician will be able to to their very best with straightening tools onsite to straighten out the frame but in many cases the frame or rear housing will need to be replaced so that the device is straight enough for a screen to be mounted without it lifting off again in the future. If the screen is not set to a straight rear surface when the device is used there is a good chance that the screen will move, lift or dislodge.

Will i void my warranty if I have scratched, dropped or cracked my device?

All repair companies warranties (including iMend.com/warranty) state that accidental damage voids the warranty and you will require a new repair. If a screen is cracked, has signs of scratches, dents and wear and tear caused by the user this would not be covered under a typical warranty as this would be termed user fault. There are occasions however that technician error when fitting the part can cause small cracks to appear on the device for instance if key screws have been overtightened. If this is the case then the device would be covered under an iMend.com warranty. A trained iMend.com technician would be able to run thorough checks to identify where any responsibility lies and provide a clear recommendation quickly.

Absolutely, all iMend technicians have been vetted by the iMend.com Recruitment Team. This means that each technician that comes out to a home or business will have passed technical, customer service and completed background checks to ensure they can be on the iMend.com system. Will my Touch ID (fingerprint recognition) still work on my iPhone after a screen replacement?

Some iPhone models have fingerprint recognition set in the home button including iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7 & 7 Plus. This enables you to use the security enclave in the home button to safely pay for items via Apple pay etc. Provided that there is no damage to the home button a screen replacement on these devices will not affect this feature. I am not sure what model of device i have – how do I check for this?

All devices will have a model number that will help you to identify which device you have, so that you can book in for your repair. Some of the model numbers will be on the back of the phone, some are kept in the SIM tray and others are in the settings of the device. Samsung's latest flagship smartphone is thinner, made of glass and metal, and has a curved screen version

Samsung's new Galaxy S6 flagship smartphone has a powerful processor, high-resolution screen and new metal and glass design - but in the war between Samsung and Apple, the pursuit of quality materials and curved screens has been sacrificed.

1. Bending Or Not Bending

Samsung doesn't have one, but two Galaxy S6 models - a standard flat screen similar to most other phones and the Galaxy S6 Edge, which bends around the left and right sides of the phone.

2. It Is Wrapped In Pixels

Whether it's curved or not, the Galaxy S6 has one of the most pixel-rich screens. The 5.1-inch screen has four times the HD resolution and a density of 577 pixels per inch (ppi), which is denser than the 432ppi Galaxy S5, 401ppi Apple iPhone 6 Plus, which is 43 pixels per inch higher than the 534ppi 5.5 in the LG G3.

3. Curved Screen Is Not Just For Performance

Like the Note 4 Edge, the curved screen on the S6 Edge adds some functionality to slide out from the side of the phone. These include ticker news alerts, night-time clocks, and the ability to place contact photos along the edges to quickly access and identify who is on the call.

4. They Gave Up The Plastic

Out is Samsung's trademark, but has been criticized, chrome-plated plastic structure - S6 is all metal and glass products. A curved metal band surrounds the edge of the phone, holding the front and back of the glass together.

5. Only Thinner Than The Other Smartphone

The S6 and S Edge are 6.8 mm thick, 0.1 mm thinner than other smartphones, and although they are the thinnest smartphone crowns.

In order to achieve this thickness and quality design, the S6 lost some functions. The microSD card for adding extra storage, waterproof and removable batteries is missing, which is the cornerstone of Samsung's previous Android smartphone.

With no external storage support, Samsung has adopted fixed storage models from Google and other - users can choose to purchase 32, 64 or 128GB versions.

8. It Uses Samsung's Shiny New Chip

The S6 uses Samsung's own Octa-core 64-bit Exynos processor. Previous Samsung smartphones used Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, although Exynos variants were available in some countries.

Samsung is committed to pushing wireless charging to the mainstream, and the S6 is the company's first built-in smartphone. It works for any wireless charging pad currently available, which is good because there isn't one in the box.

10. Fingerprint: Touch, Do Not Swipe

Samsung's improved fingerprint sensor eliminates one stroke from Apple's book and requires only one touch without the need to swipe (previously Samsung models come standard), which makes it more accurate and easier to use.

If you want to trust a technology company, the credit card is dead. Samsung introduced "Samsung Payments", which allows users to pay for goods and services using credit card swipe terminals, and join mobile operators and other new carriers that are trying to become a payment.

Gear VR - Samsung's virtual reality headset, working with Facebook's Oculus Rift, with the Galaxy Note 4 - will provide a smaller version of the Galaxy S6.

13. Not So Bloated

Samsung claims it has reduced unnecessary bloat and feature overload by 40%, but this does not include Intel's McAfee security software and Microsoft applications, including Skype, OneDrive and OneNote, which are now pre-installed on S6.
