(2024-03-17 image ©mobileworldlive) At the resent mobile world live event 4 european networks (Vodafone, telifonica, Orange and Deutsche Telekom) called for regulatory change to allow for some sbalistaion of the mobile networks over Europe.

At the heart of their issue is that they do not have the capital to build a new network every 10 years or so. Note that 6G is coming at the end of the decade and over europe that have not yet completed 5G nor 4G is some places including the UK. There is a financial gap between income and capital expenditure. Obviously there is a call for governments to help with the capital investment in what the government sees as a key national resource, and maybe in the case of Vodafone a plea to allow the Vodafone / THREE merger in the UK.

Perhaps this is the first move to cooperation between networks. Rather than building 4 networks in many of the European countries (including the UK) one shared network could be built.

As expected VMO2 have opposed the merger plans - basically just putting in markers stating that the merged company would have an unfair share of frequenc=y and this should be shared out, or at least some given to VMO2.

It does appear that the model that we have in the UK of 4 companies running separate network is flawed. Currently all 4 operators are installing the new 5G network at a slow pace and in 6 years time there will be a 6G network. Where does the money come to install another new generation of network. Some would say they have not even finished 4G over all the UK!

Now whether the solution is to have fewer network operators, down to 3, or a more radical approach of the operators collaborating more in the development of a network is an issue that we will have to address soon. A new 6G network in 2030 will bankrupt the operators.
