Review: Mohsin Hamid’s Kafkaesque Book ‘The Last White Man’
Very few writers can hold your concentration through meticulously crafted long sentences as Mohsin Hamid does in his book, The Last White Man. Hamid is a phenomenal storyteller. “One morning Anders, a white man, woke up to find he has turned a deep and undeniable brown”, the book’s first sentence (perhaps, one of the rare short sentences you may find in this work) hooks you through till the end.…

belated Ramadan Mubarak!
I try to do a bit of reading every Ramadan, so, for accountability, and so that when I inevitably don’t get through them I can find my list next year—here's my (extremely very ambitious) reading list for this year!
(suggestions are very welcome, with the warning that I very much may not get through them. this year, I’m trying to learn more about Islam and liberation theology and I’m trying to read more abolitionist texts, and of course my standard queer Muslim books, I’m trying to read more poetry by Muslim poets I don’t know well, and every Ramadan I try and only read fiction by Muslim authors, so there’s some sff on here too!)
non-fic:
memoirs:
We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib (reread)
Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H
The Colour of God by Ayesha S Chaudhry
Love is an Ex-Country by Randa Jarrar
A Dutiful Boy by Mohsin Zaidi
other nonfic:
Islam and Anarchism by Mohamed Abdou
We Do This Til We Free Us by Mariame Kaba (reread-ish? I never fully finished it)
Let This Radicalise You by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba
Qur'an and Woman by Amina Wadud (which I also never finished)
The Women's Khutbah Book by Fatima Seedat and Sa'diyya Shaikh
Qur’an of the Oppressed: Liberation Theology and Gender Justice in Islam by Shadaab Rahemtulla
With Stones in Our Hands: Writings on Muslims, Racism, and Empire by Sohail Daulatzai and Junaid Rana
fiction:
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad
Mirage by Somaiya Daud (yes I still have not read this)
The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah
Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion by Bushra Rehman
A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faisal

Surah Al Qasas: Chapter 6
Musa AS went into the city feeling scared and worried that people would discover his secret, that he had killed a man. The next day, the person who had asked for his help the day before called out to Musa AS again. He was in a fight again and shouted for Musa's help.
Musa AS said, "You are clearly going the wrong way. Why are you fighting again? Yesterday it was someone else, and today it's a different person. What are you doing?"
When the man who asked for Musa's help realized that Musa was not going to help him, he started accusing Musa AS and said, "Are you planning to kill me like you did yesterday?" Musa had helped him the previous day, but now he was making Musa look bad by spreading false accusations, and he caused a scene due to which everybody found out about Musa’s secret.
So, Musa ran away and is now in hiding. A man from the farthest end of the city, an Egyptian friend of Musa, rushed to him, he told Musa AS that there was a meeting in the castle where they were deciding to pass a verdict against him, possibly leading to his death. So, he warned Musa to leave the city immediately.
So Musa left the city, fearful and anticipating that they might come after him.
Upon reaching the well of Madyan, he found a crowd of people watering their flocks. Aside from them, he noticed two women driving back their flocks. He inquired, "What is your circumstance?" asking why they were keeping their animals away from the water.
Musa AS is, possibly in trouble himself, lacking funds due to his abrupt departure to save his life, and approaches them with hardly anything in possession. In such a needy situation, people typically focus on their own needs. However, what distinguishes a "Mohsin" is the concern for the needs of others, even when in need. So, that is what he does.
Observing something unusual, Musa AS approached them, asking about the situation and why they were not allowing their animals to drink. They explained, "We don't go in the midst of men in order to water our animals. We wait for these shepherds to go and when they're gone, then we take our animals to the waterhole so that they can drink.
So, he decided to assist them and he watered their flocks for them. Then he went back to the shade and prayed to Allah, "O My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need." Notice over here that he does not ask the girls for compensation. He doesn't say, “Okay, now you give me one sheep.” No, he only asks Allah!
Sometimes you are in a situation where you alone are suffering from your problem, no one can share the problem with you, and you cannot even reach out to somebody for help. Even if you can, nobody can help you. So at that time when you call upon Allah, then this is something that brings comfort and delight and joy that nothing else brings. So, be grateful to Allah for these moments. When every door is cut off, and you are left to yourself, call upon Allah.
And Musa (عليه السلام) called upon Allah. Look at the beautiful supplication: "Ya Allah! I am needy! He is showing humility, I am فَقِيرٌ, I am desperate for anything, any help that you send my way." He's not asking the girls for compensation. No, he's asking Allah for compensation, and what happened? Allah تعالى و سبحانه immediately responded to him.
How come Musa (عليه السلام)’s supplication was accepted immediately? Because it was from the heart! He truly begged Allah and showed that "Ya Allah! I need from you! I don't need benefit from people!" Another reason why his supplication is accepted is that, in his state of neediness, he didn't forget the people around him. He saw people in need, and if he could help them, he helped them. When he helped them, Allah helped him.
In a hadith, we learn that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah would remove from him one of the grieves of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his needs in this world and the Hereafter, whoever shields or hides the sins of a Muslim, then Allah will shield him in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah will aid His slaves so long as he aids his brother.” [Muslim 7028]
So when we need help from Allah, what do we need to do? Start helping those who are around us, and don't wait for others to call us for help. Look at other people, take an interest in them, and see what help they need. Sometimes we say, “O, how come you never asked me?” Well, don't you know what they're going through? The fact is that once you know that somebody is going through a particular situation, and you see them, it's quite obvious they need help. Don't wait for them to call. Don't wait for them to ask. Be good to others, show them mercy, and Allah will show mercy in return to you.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "One of the best deeds is to put a smile on the face of a believer, to pay off his debt, to fulfill some of his needs, or remove some hardship from him." So if we want our problems to go away, what do we need to do? Help remove the problems of other people.

Pakistani MQM linked to 'dozens of UK bank accounts'

Altaf Hussain has run his Pakistani political operation from his base in London for years
UK police documents obtained by the BBC list more than 70 London bank accounts related to a Pakistani party being investigated for money-laundering.
Twenty-six are in the name of MQM leader Altaf Hussain. UK-based party officials are waiting to hear if they will face money-laundering charges.
Six British detectives were recently in Pakistan seeking co-operation in the alleged money-laundering case.
The MQM has said Scotland Yard's claims about the bank accounts are baseless.
British police have been investigating the MQM, one of Pakistan's main political parties, for several years but the pace of their investigations has picked up markedly since a meeting in London in April between Pakistan's Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, and Home Secretary Theresa May.
The Scotland Yard documents, which include details of both open and closed bank accounts, were submitted to Pakistan's Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) as part of a British request for assistance.
Scotland Yard has declined to comment on the documents.

The UK's Crown Prosecution Service is already considering whether leading MQM officials should be charged with money-laundering offences but police say that does not stop them making further inquiries.
"The investigation continues and any further relevant information would be discussed with the CPS," said a spokesperson at Scotland Yard.
Who is Altaf Hussain?
Born in Karachi in 1953 to a middle-class family; studied pharmacy at university
Formed MQM party in 1984 to represent Mohajirs - descendants of Urdu-speaking Muslims who migrated from India to Pakistan at the time of partition
Requested political asylum in Britain in 1992, later gaining British citizenship; continues to run MQM from London
Pakistan's powerful but absent politician
Weapons list
Altaf Hussain has lived in self-imposed exile in London for more than 20 years.
With 24 members in the National Assembly, the MQM is a dominant force in the politics of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.

The British police team in Pakistan was also seeking to advance a separate investigation into the 2010 murder in north London of a senior MQM leader, Imran Farooq.
Three suspects in the case are being held in Pakistan. The UK police want to extradite one of the three - Mohsin Ali Syed - who they claim was present at the scene of the killing.
Pakistan is insisting that either all three should be extradited - or none at all.
The MQM denies any wrongdoing and insists that all the allegations made against it are false.
The British judiciary has been highly critical of the MQM. Back in 2011 a British judge adjudicating an asylum appeal case found that "the MQM has killed over 200 police officers who have stood up against them in Karachi".

The MQM has the ability to put thousands of protesters on the streets of Karachi
During their investigation into the murder of Mr Farooq the police found £167,525.92 (about $235,000) in the MQM's offices in London and a further £289,785.32 in Mr Hussain's home in Edgware, north London.
Previous investigations in London uncovered a list in Mr Hussain's home itemising weapons, including mortars, grenades and bomb-making equipment. The list included prices for the weapons.
The Scotland Yard documents include a number of other British requests for assistance from their Pakistani counterparts.
The British asked for information about cash and weapons found at the MQM's Karachi headquarters. They also asked for official confirmation of Pakistani media reports that the MQM was involved in extortion in Karachi.

🍃🌺🍃 The Birth of 🍃🌺🍃
🍃 Lady Zainab (sa) 🍃
Lady Zainab (sa) was (accurately) the third child born to Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa). In other words, she was born directly after Imam Hussain (as); despite the false claim of some historians who hold the opinion that Lady Zainab (sa) was born after the miscarriage, which Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa) had and resulted in the martyrdom of Mohsin. These historians are motivated by their desire to divert the attention from the merciless attack on Lady Fatima’s (sa) house which not only resulted in Mohsin's martyrdom, but also in the eventual death of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa) herself.
Among these writers is the Egyptian Bint Ash-Shati who wrote in her book Batlat Karbala:
"Zahra, the Prophet's daughter was about to give birth to a new baby after bringing happiness unto Messenger's life by giving birth to his beloved sons: al-Hasan and al-Hussain, and a third child, who was not destined to live and whose name was to be Mohsin Ibn ‘Ali..." 1
Regardless of these unfounded claims, it has been established that Lady Zainab (sa) was born in 5 A.H., and that she was the third child of the honorable Alawi household.
It is said that her grandfather, the Prophet (S) named her Zainab (sa) that is derived from two words: "Zain" and "Ab" that together means "The embellishment of her father." Yet, Muhammad Jawad Mughniah quoted the Egyptian newspaper, Al-Jomhuria dated October 31, 1972, in his book al-Hussain Batala Karbala as saying:
"Zainab was born in Shaban 5 A.H. When her mother brought her to Imam Ali (as) and said: "Name her" he replied: "I would not name her before Allah's Messenger." At this time the Prophet (S)!was on a trip and when he returned, he again refused to name her before her Lord. So, Gabriel descended to inform the Prophet (S) about Allah's blessings, and said: "The name of this baby is Zainab; Allah chose this name for her."
Lady Zainab's (sa) history itself speaks of her honorable life, and noble traits, as well as the miseries she encountered during her childhood, such as the death of her great grandfather, the martyrdom of her mother (sa), and the various inflictions which she lived through during the quarter of a century that her father, Imam Ali (as), was confined to his house as a result of his rights having been usurped by others.
Moreover, when Lady Zainab (sa) emigrated from Medina to Kufa, her Father's city, several misfortunes were destined for her; starting with the martyrdom of Imam Ali (as). This was followed by fierce battles between her brother, al-Hasan (as), and Mu'awiya, which resulted in the poisoning of Imam Hasan (as). After several years, Lady Zainab (sa) faced the greatest disaster of history when Imam Hussain (as) along with the prominent Hashimite men were massacred at Karbala by the Umayyads. After massacring the men, Lady Zainab (sa), and the women were taken to Syria; but, she did not panic, nor, did she give into the enemy. From Syria she was sent to Medina, and then exiled to Egypt to live the rest of her life.
Lady Zainab's (sa) tomb is well-known in Egypt today, and is visited by believers from all over the world.
(There is disagreement about the location of Lady Zainab's (sa) tomb; it is believed by most to be located in Syria).

ASDA LAUNCHES £1 MEAL DEALS FOR OVER 60’S
This winter Asda is offering a new winter warmer scheme which will allow those aged 60plus a 1pound in store café meal deal. The supermarket aims to help some of its most vulnerable customers in response to the current cost of living crisis. In any of the 205 cafes run by the supermarket chain, the meal package, includes soup, a bread roll, and unlimited tea or coffee. The deal is available all through from November to December.
The new initiative runs alongside “kids eat for 1 pound”, which continues to be immensely popular, with more than 557,000 meals served since the offers launch in late June.
The supermarket announced the decision to implement this "winter warmer" project after their "Income Trackers" revealed that consumers between the ages of 65 and 74 had a £163 decrease in disposable income in August, compared to 2021.
Findings from Age UK statistics has shown that an estimate of 2.8 million homes will still be amongst fuel poverty this winter, in spite of the governments freezing of the energy price cap.
Asda co-owner, Mohsin Issa, has said: “We know that this winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a fixed income. We’ve already been able to serve over half a million meals through our Kids Eat for £1 initiative in our cafes and we’re hoping our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over 60s will prove just as impactful for those who need it most. Meanwhile, the cost of living grant programme led by Asda’s charity The Asda Foundation will support grassroots organisations who are providing a lifeline in their communities during these tough times.”
The supermarket is also implementing a "Community Cuppa" campaign at its cafes by giving community organisation’s a place to meet that would otherwise be difficult owing to increased electricity prices. Meetups will be available from November through to December, on weekdays between 2pm to 6pm. A free cup of coffee or tea will be provided to all visitors to the community group.
Additionally, to providing support for pensioners, the Asda foundation is providing 500k in funding to help community organizations struggling with rising operating costs.
Up to £2000 in individual grants will be available and priority will be given to groups and charities that need financial help for increased energy costs or for creating warm banks in their facilities. These Warm banks are places where people can stay warm throughout the winter if they can’t afford to keep their homes heated all year round.
