Christmas with Heartsteel:

Ezreal: wants ALL the presents, eats ALL the cookies, gets a tummy ache and then his period, loves cheesy christmas movies and ugly christmas sweater competition. Capitalisms greatest warrior. Owns a nutcracker collection, insists on playing Christmas songs 24/7, gets glitter literally everywhere. Burns the first trail of cookies and thinks its a bad omen... convinces ksante somehow to organise a mistletoe.

Yone: always sad and emotional because he misses yasuo, hides it behind elaborate meals, personal presents, intricate makeup and smoke breaks (that only kayn catches on to). Pretends to be super invested while just trying to get it over with. The only redeeming quality for all the stress are the few late night cig talks he has with kayn.

Aphelios: never celebrated Christmas at home, arrives at the 24th because he visited his family in targon during the solistice. Has presents he brought at the trainstation this exact day, that sett helped him wrap. He says he doesnt want/should help decorate because its not his holiday, but is secretly scared and unsure. He would really love to make christmas music though and has secretly learned a ton of songs on the piano, flute and violin. Just in case.

Alune: super excited, she loved christmas movies and when she gets to decorate the Christmas tree with kayn she almost cries. "Omg sugar canes are real?!?! I thought they only exist in movies!". Learned the songs together with phel so she is eager to march through the neighbourhood and sing, or whatever people do.

K'Sante: has celebrated christmas but with very different traditions, so when ezreal and sett just assume he cares about their christmas tree and their need to clean up the shelf to have space for nutcrackers he gets mildly annoyed. Sneaks out and drives over an hour to join a Christian service from his people

Sett: loves it sooo much, got an advent calendar from his mom, knits socks as presents for everyone, decorates the house with ezreal and starts planning the dinner with yone two weeks in advance. Ofc his mom is invited! She also helps him get the best presents for everyone, especially aphelios, puh, finding that one was hard. But stars are a symbol of christmas, and getting him lots of starry stickers and a star themed bracelet...

Kayn: would like to not care because not like his adoptive family did and it brings up nasty memories of his birth parents - so he joins yone in attempts of distraction, drags him out to get wasted on a christmas market, makes eggnog and gets so drunk half way through that yone takes pity and finishes it for him. Forgets to buy presents and runs to the gasstation to bring home the same kind of wine for everyone. And chocolate for ezreal. Aaand a birdwatching magazin for ksante. Ok, this protein bar looks like sett would love it. Monster energy for phel, just to keep him awake. Oh, didnt alune mention she likes this particular brand of instant ramen most? ...alright, and thats the brand of cigarettes yone smokes. Better get one, in case he runs out. And some whiskey, he might need it later.

Day Three: A Male Character (of Mine)

Let’s go with my trouble child! Crowe has been a trip as both a muse and for the blog. When I originally went for designing him, Crowe was actually supposed to be something of meme lord that happened to be a good actor. Hilarious to my RP partners that deal with him now to figure that he’s supposed to be a funny man. What steered this awry was actually a combination of how his background impacts him as a person and his interactions with the muses that now comprise his main friend group. He just had smart ass shit to say. All. The. Time. 

He also was a new muse that actually made me have to make ground rules for what his ‘species’ is like since I haven’t really done much since vampires and changelings. His powers were intentionally not the same strength of his predecessors because, well, it just makes sense that the blood runs thin after centuries. Although I do think his powers are still pretty damn strong for diluted blood but I guess that’s what happens when you have a monster/goddess’ blood somewhere. 

Onto the meat of it though. I enjoy Crowe because he just has so much going on in his job, his relationships, his heritage and how his dismal personality collides with it all. Crowe is someone different basically everyone. You could say that with just about anyone but Crowe’s seems almost extreme dependent on his crowd. To the Nomikos, he’s their ‘uncrowned prince,’ the outsider that was talented and headstrong enough to impress and even challenge their golden boy, Chares. To the blackbirds, he’s an asset for a rather large inquiry: accusing an old family of abusing their power. To his friends, he’s rather aloof in interaction and always ‘shady.’ To his girlfriend, he’s a dork that is hiding behind a suave front.

His mentor, Gil, likens Crowe to water. Always moving and adapting. But also always conforming to whatever vessel that he ends up in. Carrying away sediments of anything he comes in contact with. These sediments are a persona...a front for every person he meets. And because they’re just so different for everyone, Crowe doesn’t like the streams crossing. Because it could be so jarring and hard to reconcile those differences. 

Something about Crowe that is mentioned a lot but is not really thought about is that he is a spy. It’s an open secret since by knowing he’s a blackbird, it’s known he’s such. But it isn’t really thought on what that means. A spy gains and keeps secrets and Crowe is good at that. So being made to be open, it’s not easy to ask of him. And on top of that, Crowe is a private person. He isn’t one to talk about himself and due to his background, he’s wary of letting knowledge of himself out there. Not even because he can’t trust the person but because as a spy, he knows there’s eyes and ears everywhere. So just by speaking about things, there’s always a worry something will happen.

How this man hasn’t turned his hair white or given himself a heart attack by now is miracle because worry seems to always be on his mind. Like someone would joke he has plans A through C but in reality he probably has gone through the entire alphabet. And sadly, it isn’t solely from his job. It’s been present even before the craziness of getting his gorgon abilities. He’s lived with like this vague threat that loomed over him where he was supposed to keep his head down and avoid causing waves. It’s only been exacerbated since with the learning of what he is and his controlling adoptive family. 

I felt like I had so much to say but I’ve dissolved into a mess. But yeah, he’s a mess so I guess that’s fitting.

Day 13 - Ironhusbands

Rhodey looks at the big tree and sighs. Of course Tony Stark wants a big tree.

„What do you think Honey Bear? Beautiful right? Just like my husband.“ Tony babbles and he walks around the tree. Tony is right the tree at least is beautiful, but Rhodey also knows who has to log it.

„You already said that at 100 other trees.“ Rhodey says, but he has to smile. It’s their first christmas as husband and husband together and for Rhodey it’s special as well, but Tony wants everything to be perfect.

A perfect Christmas for Rhodey doesn’t need a big tree or presents. It just needs Tony at his side.

„Yeah no. I’m sure.“ Tony says, when he stands back at Rhodey’s side. He trembles a bit and Rhodey puts Tony’s free hand in his own jacket pocket. The idiot of course didn’t dress for a weather like this. Snow in December? What a surprise.

„Okay, anything for you.“ Rhodey says and he gets the axe. As a kid he always did this with his father and he is glad, he can do it with Tony now.

„Aww. You don’t have to flatter me anymore, Honey Bear. I already married you.“ Tony says, but Rhodey sees the blush on Tony’s cheek. He loves it, that Tony is still embarrassed whenever Rhodey treats him like he deserves.

„Just to make sure, you will stay.“ Rhodey says and he gets a sweet kiss on his own cheek from Tony for that. He doesn’t think Tony would ever leave him, but he also still can’t believe he got him in the first place.

„Of course I do.“ Tony whispers and Rhodey turns around to him. They kiss for a sweet moment and Rhodey has to smile. He would’ve never thought his life would be like this. He doesn’t think he was ever happier than now. With Tony.

„So now. Get the tree.“ Tony says and Rhodey has to laugh at that. But Tony is right, they are already late, cause a certain Genius, Billionaire, Husband, Philanthropist had to search over two hours for the perfect tree.

„Do you plan on helping me?“ Rhodey asks back, but he goes over to the tree. He should bought something with him to transport this monster tree, but he really thought they would take a smaller one with them. Still the tree is small enough to carry it with two people.

„Nope.“ Tony says and he crosses his arms. He just smiles a very evil smile and Rhodey rolls his eyes. Well that seems actually fair, cause Tony was the one, who cooked their whole meal alone.

„Of course.“ Rhodey mutters anyway and starts to log the tree. It works just fine and he can hear Tony giggle a lot.

„Just enjoying this view.“ Tony says and Rhodey has to laugh at that, too. That’s just Tony, he could never take a compliment, but he always flirts with Rhodey.

„Glad you like it.“ Rhodey answers and when he looks back up at Tony he sees, that Tony takes a video of him on his Starkphone. Tony giggles again at Rhodey’s face and waves. Rhodey waves slowly back.

„See? That is Papa Bear and he is getting our tree. Isn’t that a wonderful tree? I bet it looks stunning in our living room and… one day when you are with us, we can get an even better one.“ Tony says and he turns the camera at himself, when he talks. Rhodey raises an eyebrow.

„What are you doing?“ Rhodey asks, when Tony ends the video.

„Making a video for… our kids.“ Tony says and then shrugs as if it were nothing. The tree falls with a thump on the ground, but Rhodey goes over to Tony again and smiles.

„It’s okay, babe. One day our kids will see all the videos you do.“ Rhodey answers and when Tony still seems a bit doubtfully, he kisses him again. They are together for over 5 years now and Rhodey always wanted to have kids. Tony had so many doubts in the beginning, but now he is just as excited as Rhodey.

They married in march this year and that means they also finally signed up on adoption. If they are lucky, they will already become parents next year.

„Everything will be okay.“ Rhodey says, when he ends the kiss. He is still close to Tony and puts his forehead against Tony’s. They smile at each other and Tony nods slowly.

„Got it. In the meantime I will record out fantastic life.“ Tony says and Rhodey laughs.

„Knock yourself out.“ Rhodey answers and then takes the tree trunk into his hands. It’s a bit of a walk back to their car and it also goes uphill. Rhodey sighs and looks at his husband, who starts recording again.

„Come on Tony.“ Rhodey says and Tony nods. He is still recording and when he gets close enough, Rhodey takes his phone and puts it away.

„Hey!“ Tony says and he pouts. Rhodey points at the top of the tree.

„You can have it back in the car. Now less filming, more carrying this damn tree.“ Rhodey says and he smiles, when Tony pouts even more. Got sometimes he already has a child at home.

„But…“ Tony starts and then stop at Rhodey’s look on his face. Tony sighs and at least he pretends to carry the tree. Rhodey can feel that he just has it under his arms, but Rhodey is still carrying most of it. Tony is still pouting.

And Rhodey? Rhodey just looks back at his boyfriend and smiles. What can he say? He is enjoying the view.

Week 13: Self-Promotion; Louise Weir’s Guide

Good self-promotion and marketing is the most effective way of fostering interest in people that know nothing about you.

Pre-internet, self-promotion was a much more expensive business.

Outside of clients seeing commercial work, Illustrators needed work hard remain visible, sending out regular marketing and promotion via direct mail was a very necessary part of this. As an independent Illustrator and member of a small Illustration collective I/we realised quite soon that it was easier for work to get noticed and be memorable if work was packaged and promoted differently. Not only that but clients were excited by individual and original items and much more likely to hang on to these than those that adopted a standard approach. With our collective (Monster) we sourced unusual packaging and fun items (badges, sweets, monster pen toppers) to accompany printed material when sending out our regular Monster “goodie bags” that reflected our “brand”. These were particularly effective when tied in with events such as exhibitions where the self-promotion would be on show as the latest “limited edition” as well as the work. Clients were enthusiastic about the Monster “brand” and eager to receive the next piece of marketing to keep in their collection.

To induce and promote client confidence in your work, it’s important that everything you produce to promote your work reflects your visual style, approach and identity, right down to the envelop you put your work into and how you write and/or print address and even place the stamp. This creative cohesion of design, product and identity will ensure that you and your work have more authority and are more memorable. Increasing the chances of you remaining in the drawer or the brain of an overworked art director.

Nowadays it’s so much easier to research and reach clients on the internet and target them with emails, but do art directors and designers look at your work when they get so many and what distinguishes you from everyone else? I know many art directors who dismiss emails from unknown recipients and send them straight to trash, that is why it is so important to create physical pieces of self-promotion that are less easily projected into the creative abyss of the trash bin.

So how to start?

As I’ve said before, like any “product” to promote it with conviction and sell it effectively you need to know it inside out and pitch it to the appropriate market. Research the market and research yourself.

Be selective you can’t and shouldn’t show people everything you’ve done ever (for example that GCSE work on your mum’s wall), it’s about showing them what’s appropriate and relevant.

Think about the main focus of your portfolio and reflect this in your self- promotion. For example, if you do lots of maps you could create your own version of an ordinance survey map. If you do lots of pets you could do a set of pets tops trumps. You could laser cut a cardboard record and sleeve if you’ve been working on a series of blues stars. A tongue in cheek anti-capitalist shopping tote bag. Good places to look for inspiration are gallery and museum gift shops, Etsy,

I AM extremely pleased to see that this month's adoptables are selling so quickly, it's honestly baffling to see that they're selling day-of-posting, let alone MINUTES of me getting the images up!!!
