19th Century Scottish "Pebble" Jewellery
Tumblr media
Scotland is known for its abundance of coloured agate which is found in a huge variety of colours and patterns, each type specific to a particular locality. Lapiadaries working in Edinburgh's "new town" made most of the pebble jewellery produced in the 18th and 19th centuries, sourcing stones from collectors who scoured the country in search of new deposits. Queen Victoria's love for all things Scottish generated a buoyant demand for jewellery of this style, and it's estimated that the number of people working in jewellery manufacturing in the 1870s exceeded two thousand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A superb antique pebble bracelet and brooch set made in Scotland in the latter half of the 19th century. It comprises a series of graduated discs, each one featuring a Cairngorm citrine that forms the top of a dome with triangular cut-out sections to create a star motif around it. The gold is finely engraved with abstract foliate detailing, and inlayed with colourful varieties of agate and hardstone, including jasper, Montrose agate, granite, and bloodstone.

About the Collection
"Everything about Heddle was huge. He was huge of stature, with an adventurous, inquisitive and pragmatic spirit. Using his huge 28lb sledgehammer, his dynamism enabled him to amass a collection of Scottish minerals, especially agates and rocks, the likes of which has never been bettered.
At National Museums Scotland, we look after 5,700 specimens from his collection. Find out more about Heddle and explore his amazing collection here. You can download our Heddle trail [PDF 83KB] to find specimens from his collection around the National Museum of Scotland."

Toward morning, the colors had shifted, the atmosphere thick with pale cumulus clouds that surrounded the hull of Ottilia’s ship and obscured the weathered silkie on its prow. Lord Arden had warned her the Queensmen already had tracked her to Wasting, and then to Tipperary Harbour. Montrose still wouldn’t be safe, though she was low on supplies.
Arden had smiled at her gamely, raising a toast with his usual ironic flair. Otillia knew better than to trust his intentions. She’d been in the game far too long to trust anyone outside her employ. But Arden had been useful, almost disarmingly so.
The wind was gathering, and she would have to make a choice soon. Montrose was closer, but they would know her on sight there. Its spires gleamed in the distance, bustling with merchant airships and fat dirigibles liners, a stopping point on the way toward the Barrens and Agate Water beyond them.
Or she could chance Arden’s map.
He was still sleeping below, sprawled in her quarters with his silk waistcoat unbuttoned. Harry and Pim and Elisha had all decided to trust him. But this was her ship, Ottilia knew. She’d be responsible if all of this ended badly.
Montrose had always been safer before.
She took a breath, watching the bare-chested silkie gaze enigmatically into the distance, her painted teeth sharper than bayonet points. Arden hadn’t lied yet. And they’d have a head start, at least. She told herself she wouldn’t hesitate to shoot him, if she really needed to.
Ottila sighed. At least Elisha would be excited. They’d be heading past the smokestacks of Greater Pershing below. She’d heard that they sparked like embers long into the night, bright like a carpet of stars.

Niobrara County and Mule Creek Junction, WY
The Oglala National Grassland is a United States National Grassland in the northwest corner of Nebraska. It is in northern Sioux and northwestern Dawes counties, on the borders with South Dakota and Wyoming. It is 94,520 acres (38,250 ha) in size and is one of the small handful of National Grasslands administered by the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service together with the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests and the Buffalo Gap and Fort Pierre National Grasslands from common offices in Chadron, Nebraska.
Oglala National Grassland is home to some of the most striking badlands formations in Toadstool Geologic Park, near Crawford, Nebraska and Whitney, Nebraska.
The Hudson-Meng Bison Kill, also located on the grassland, is an archaeological excavation in progress.
The Warbonnet Battlefield Monument, commemorating the 1876 Battle of Warbonnet Creek, is located on Oglala National Grassland on Montrose Road.
The grassland also contains the Agate, Bordgate, and Rock Bass reservoirs.

The flag of the state of Wyoming consists of the silhouette of an American bison. The red symbolizes the Native Americans and the blood of pioneers who gave their lives. The white is a symbol of purity and uprightness. The blue is the color of the skies and distant mountains. It is also a symbol of fidelity, justice and virility. The bison represents the local fauna, while the seal on it symbolizes the custom of branding livestock.
In 1916 the Wyoming Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) ran a contest inviting the public to submit possible designs for a Wyoming flag. A prize of $20 was offered to the winner, and the DAR received a total of 37 entries. They chose a drawing by Verna Keays, a recent graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. On January 31, 1917, Governor Robert D. Carey signed the state flag bill into law and the bison flag was officially adopted.
DAR regent Grace Raymond Hebard, a professor at the University of Wyoming and noted suffragist and scholar, contributed suggestions for changes after the design had been accepted. In Keays' original design, the one approved by Wyoming's legislature, the bison faces toward the fly, symbolizing its former freedom to roam the plains of Wyoming. Hebard thought that if the bison were to face toward the hoist, the design would be more balanced (animals generally face the hoist on flags, as they would the wind). In the end, all Wyoming flags from the first batch produced onward showed the bison facing the hoist, although this change was never officially adopted by the Wyoming legislature.

Northwest Nebraska ramble
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Cemetery at Montrose, NE
One of the reasons I bought my pickup camper a year ago was to be able to mosey along country roads and visit some of the more remote spots in the Nebraska. While I had traveled to Fort Robinson and Toadstool National Geological Park with my son around 10 years ago, I knew there was much more in northwest Nebraska to see.

The Reel Deal: What You Need to Get Started Fishing
Tumblr media
Photo: Robson Morgan
The Reel Deal: What You Need to Get Started Fishing It all starts with a fish and a worm, or it all ends that way, depending on your perspective. First off though, you need the gear. Gone are the days of a cane pole, a string and a worm. Now we have sonar, synthetic lines and enough man-tied flies to rival Mother Nature. License Required I used to complain because a fishing license doesnt come with a money back guarantee. You see, I must admit I’m not the world’s best fisherman. Oh, I can fish well enough, it’s the catching part I have yet to master. Sometimes I drown a few worms but that’s about it. When you purchase a fishing license though, you are not just paying for the fish you may catch. You are helping to fund the whole fish and game industry in your respective state. License fees pay for hatcheries that supply fish but they also pay for the rangers who assist you in so many ways. Sure, if he catches you without a license he will write you a ticket but that same ranger may save your life, or at the very least assist you when in need. The money you pay and the people it employs help preserve our outdoors for everyone to enjoy today and tomorrow. Location, Location, Location In Colorado, if you’re casting a line into a body of water, you need a license. In some states such as Florida for example, you don’t need a license if you are fishing from on shore, or a pier or dock that is attached to the shore. If you are on a boat, you need that paper. The thing you need in coastal states like Florida though is a bit of knowledge about what you’re dealing with. Some fish must be released when they are too small, some when they’re too big. Some are in season when some are not. This can get tricky when they have such a variety of fish so you may want to read up on the rules.
Get the Gear I really did start fishing with a cane pole but that was down south and was a long time ago. It may look quaint in the movies and sound good in songs but there are sure better ways to catch fish. In today’s world, there is no reason not to have good gear. Good gear is available for prices ranging from dirt cheap to ridiculous. Amazon lists a Shakespeare Youth Fishing kit for less than ten bucks for a rod and reel set up. You can go a bit higher and get a more adult combo rod and reel for about $40 and up.Take the High Road Steeping it up a notch, you could get a Scott FC Fly Rod from Trident Fly Fishing which is hand made in Montrose, Co. This is for the rod only and it runs $3250 but look at what you get. The blanks are hollow built with stabilized nodes and butt swells, sections are joined with hand- made Hariki nickel silver ferrules, along with Agate guides in hand made silver nickel frames. Now, to be honest, I have no idea what any of that means but it does come with free shipping, so there you go.

Tackle the Problem Now, you have to have a tackle box. This can be store bought or a shoe-box but it carries all your hooks and lures and such. They can be found already stocked with just about everything you could need. You can even start with a kid’s tackle box from a discount store. I not only started with one, I bought one recently for about eight bucks for a last minute camping trip; and you wonder why I can’t catch fish?
Let’s Be Serious For that extra special fisherman who needs a little spice in his life, you can sign up for a package of tackle sent to your home every month from MysteryTackleBox.com. You just pick which price ranging from $14.99-$29.99 and specify just what species you’re fishing for such as: Bass, Walleye, Catfish or Trout and you’re all set. The good folks at Mystery Tackle Box will send you a surprise selection of tackle and lures every month.
Drop Me a Line I didn’t mention bait because once you’re anywhere within miles of any body of water, you can buy bait. They sell worms, salmon eggs and whatever else works in that locale at pretty much any convenience store or gas station nearby. Sure you may have some fancy lures in that kid’s tackle box but worms pretty much work anywhere. Besides all this, the only other thing you could use is a good book to teach you how to really catch fish and if you find out, drop me a line, literally. Michael Ryan

Superior quality, this jewel displays an array of stones and much care has been taken in the arrangement of the stones to create the most striking effect. The natural patterns and colours are shown in their wonderful earthy contrast; we believe the stones to be yellow/red Porphyry and grey Montrose Agate around the outer edge, with the central skilfully high faceted central stones being Bloodstone, Perthshire and Angus Agates, green/grey Moss Agate and Aberdeen Granite. The Silver between the stones is engraved with a Scottish rose at the centre. The precision of the workmanship is astounding, in particular the cutting and setting of the stones and this piece is typical of the work of James Fenton of Birmingham, in particular the knarled engraving seen between the stones. In perfect condition, it measures 4.5cm across, and fastens with the traditional 'C' clasp and a ring for a safety chain. £795 #scottishagate #scottishagatebrooch #victorianbrooch #oldjewels #antiquesilverbrooch https://instagr.am/p/CTykg-JIx9g/
