URBAN EXPRESSION AND DEPRESSION IN TRIM REF-226401-1
I walked along the lane until I got to Mornington Way and Mornington Heights Estate which I did not explore in detail because of an intense rain storm which forced me to return home.
LANEWAY CONNECTING MORNINGTON WAY TO PATRICK STREET I visited St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Trim on the day after Christmas and after leaving the church I noticed that there was a large carpark across the street from the church which gave me an opportunity to photograph the complete building. After taking a few photographs I noticed a laneway which I decided to explore. I walked along the lane…

Shoreham House, Mornington Peninsula

Shoreham House in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
23 Mar 2021
Shoreham House
Architects: Borland Architecture
Location: Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia
Built overlooking the Bass Strait in Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia the Shoreham House by Borland Architecture is designed to soak up the ocean views.
This project is all about the water view. The clients wanted a home as close to the water as the planning rules would allow, with as many rooms facing the view as possible. They wanted to expand their living space, create different zones for his teenage kids, work and play whilst still being able to train horses and run their businesses. The home was to be single level, follow the natural fall of the land and be private from the main road.
It was to be robust to withstand the extreme weather with minimal maintenance yet luxurious and comfortable.
What building methods were used? Blockwork, Steel and timber structure. Concrete render, glass and timber paneling to external facades. Integral windows with 25mm frames to all fixed and sliding panels.
Internally, feature walls in Sandstone and Easycraft VJ board with all others plastered with polished concrete. Floors in Endicott crazy paving and engineered timber floor boards. Bathrooms with Alt Surfaces X Bond micro cement to all walls. All benchtops in custom cast concrete with joinery in timber veneer and laminate.
What were the key challenges? Being a green field site in an area of outstanding natural beauty, getting a planning permit to construct a home in this environment is challenging.
The brief called for as much glazing as possible facing the water views. Unfortunately the water is on the southern side of the building which created challenges in regards to achieving high performance in energy efficiency. The ocean side of the building can be very exposed to wild weather blowing off the ocean so solutions had to be found to create alternative calm outdoor settings.
What were the solutions? Firstly, to construct a building on this property, the home needed to be a working farm. Our clients have a passion for horses and we therefore proposed to construct stables, a training ménage and divide the rest of the property into paddocks for horses and cattle which the clients would breed.
Secondly, the home had to be positioned so the view of the water was uninterrupted from the road. We modelled the entire terrain and planned a low level building set into the landscape to achieve this outcome.
In regards to the natural orientation of the building and the clients desire to maximise water views through full height glazing from every space, we firstly sought out the best performance glazing we could find. The product we used not only achieved this outcome by being double glazed with an argon filled cavity, but also had thermally broken frames which are extremely narrow in profile (25mm thick). The frames typically perform worst so by minimising the size we were able to achieve a better performance. We offset the high proportion of glazing with a very high level of insulation in the solid walls and roof.
The zoning of the home is also very important. Whilst all the views are to the south, this side of the home can be very exposed to the natural forces of nature coming from the Bass Strait. We designed the home to offer a calm counterpoint to this wild side by placing the alfresco dining, seating areas and pool on the northern side of the building. The building form wraps around these outdoor zones to shelter it and provide a peaceful setting whilst still being visually connected with the ocean through the home.

‘We love our kitchen, it’s so big and spacious and chunky. Cabinet maker Roman rebuilt all the cabinetry as it was rotting and about to fall through the floors. He skilfully managed to match the wood stain to the original wood panels.’ On the bench is the 1970s Le Creuset pot, and vintage orange bowl. Photo – Derek Swalwell.

There are stairs and split levels everywhere in this house. These stairs lead from the sun-room to the music room then up another level to the kitchen.  You can also see the original porthole lights in the ceilings and the very uniquely designed light boxes, which Katie and Ian re-furbished. A  Lovingly Restored Mid-Century Marvel In Mount Martha
This circa 1973 home may look straight out of Palm Springs, but it’s actually located just outside Melbourne in Mount Martha.
Originally designed by Karl Fender (now one half of Fender Katsalidis), owner Katie Brannaghan and her husband Ian purchased the property in 2017 and have since returned the house to its former glory.
We shared this spectacular home back in October, and it’s already one of the popular mid-century homes we’ve published to date!

Avoiding The Coastal Cliché, With Mid Century Flair
This home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is the ultimate combination of beach house, mid-century, and sophisticated modern design.
Studio Esteta recently updated the hilltop home to accommodate six bedrooms, without stripping it of modernist character. Among stunning features are the crazy interior paving and rich marbled surfaces, complemented by original mid-century furniture and decor.

Enhancing The Past In Studley Park
Our Instagram went crazy upon posting the facade image of this home located on Studley Park, a tightly held pocket of Melbourne’s Kew!
The mid-century home was originally designed by influential Russian-born Australian architect Anatol Kagan, who was committed to designing buildings that had a positive impact on society.
Most recently, the 1950s home has been sympathetically renovated by Kennedy Nolan, who refreshed the architectural beauty of the property, and re-zoned the layout to reflect a more contemporary way of living.

This original Robin Boyd-designed house in Warrandyte is now the family home of writer, strategist and podcast host Emma Clark Grattan, furniture maker Lee Grattan, and their children Archer and Jethro. The original house on the block burned down in 1962, and the owners commissioned Robin Boyd to design this new house in 1963. The house is clad with steel, which is quite unusual for the celebrated architect, but part of the brief was that the house was fire-resistant. Landscaping by Emma and Lee. Photo – Caitlin Mills. This Rare Robin Boyd Original Makes An Extraordinary Family Home
Among the many beautiful mid-century homes in Melbourne’s Warrandyte is this 1963 one designed by iconic Australian architect, Robin Boyd.
This home is owned by content strategist and writer Emma Clark Gratton, and her furniture making husband, Lee Gratton, who moved here in search of extra space for their young family.
The seasoned renovators couple have redone the kitchen, added new cabinetry and tiling, renovated the master bedroom, and installed solar panels among many other small tweaks.
We love the spectacular views appreciated via through floor-to-ceiling windows in every room, alongside the beautifully designed interiors full of Gratton furniture and retro finds.

A 1960s Portsea Shack Gets A Contemporary Revamp
Pleysier Perkins recently transformed this ‘tired beige’ ‘60s shack in Portsea, Victoria into a light and bright getaway that balances mid-century charm with modern family life.
The architects updated the kitchen, dining, and living area in the process to improve spatial flow, added a new playroom, and gave the interiors minor facelift.
Full-height doors at both ends of the new addition connect the space with the outdoors. The boundaries between these spaces are blurred with the use of crazy pavers that gently extend from the interiors to the grassy outdoor areas.

Modernising A Mid-Century Stunner
This mid-century home in St Lucia, Brisbane, features light and airy spaces to make the most of its subtropical climate.
The property was renovated by Lucy Jeffries as one of the first projects since establishing her own studio. Prior to this, she had been honing her skills with award winning residential architectural practices Vokes and Peters and Shaun Lockyer.
This home was all about paring back and returning the home to its essential form, with a few carefully considered contemporary updates.

A Corner-Block Mid-Century Classic
Our columnists over at Modernist Australia introduced this 1958 home in Klemzig, Adelaide, to us when it was on the market earlier in the year. It’s since been snapped up, and it’s not hard to see why!
The home has been sympathetically updated by its previous owners, who lived there since 1968. Many original features were retained over the decades, including a glassy window wall looking into the living room, and the wonderfully pink bathroom!

Mid Century Meets Modern, In This Thoughtfully Renovated 1960s Home
This ‘60s home is pure mid-century from the street, but step inside and you’ll find some seriously glamorous interiors!
Bower Architecture and Interiors were responsible for recently updating this Caulfield property. The brief was to rediscover and celebrate the home’s original features, and create additional spaces with ‘hints of whimsy and glamour (but not glitz).’

An Amazing Mid-Century Home Gets A High-Tech Makeover!
A dreamy waterfront site meets classic mid-century in Sydney’s Middle Cove.
The house was originally designed by architect Glynn Nicholls (son of Eric Nicholls – Walter Burley Griffin’s Australian business partner) in 1959, but was recently extended by 8 Squared.
The interior design by Studio Gorman is just as impressive, combining ‘50s elements alongside the latest technology to take this home into the 21st century and beyond.

When choosing where to have a funeral your choices have now grown.
Restaurants, bars, reception centres, wineries, gardens, sports clubs, private homes the choices are now only limited by your imagination.
Funerals have always traditionally been held in churches however as society becomes more secular it would appear that many are putting great thought into the meaning and relevance of the funeral and naturally where it should be held. Since the 1960s funeral homes had become an alternative to the church and whilst many families still opted for misters or priests, the funeral didn’t seem to have the church like feel that the traditional church service did. At the same time, many churches would not allow the coffin to be opened within the church in order for families to say their last goodbyes, The funeral home provided greater flexibility.

Dalywaters Estate, Mornington
West Beach Bathers Pavilion
From the 1980-s funeral homes began to offer simple refreshment services, typically tea, coffee sandwiches etc, the type of food you may have received in a church hall. Indeed some funeral homes around Australia began to offer licencing options. This was seen as quite a provocative move and created much discussion, but move forward a few decades and licensed venues are now almost seen as a prerequisite for many mourners.
The 90s began to see technology take hold. Where once music options may have been an organist or piano and hymns, more contemporary music options were becoming more common. Filming and live streaming of funerals was now available and starting to appear in many funeral homes. Simple framed pictures were now being replaced by full-blown audiovisual productions.
Technology has provided many additional opportunities for families, but the rate of technological change has been a double-edged sword. The cost of maintaining the latest equipment has been burdensome and expensive for many funeral homes, who were not geared for this.
Enter the function venues, facilities which were often idle, not having any daytime or weekday events, many of which have relished at the opportunity of doing either funerals, memorial services or wakes. The coffin once seen as almost taboo to have anywhere else other than a church or funeral home is now often accepted into these venues without any concern. Perhaps this reflects the changing way in which the community now sees funeral service and greater comfort when services are held in places with more meaning and relevance to mourners.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Most Melbourne Crematoriums have now undergone significant refurbishment, installing state of the art audiovisual equipment, refreshment lounges and large commercial kitchens and executive chefs, sourced from some of the countries finest catering companies. One large cemetery trust is serving approximately 3000 meal portions a day to mourners. Indeed some of the cemeteries now provide functions to those outside of the funeral circle, including weddings, corporate events etc.
Wakes can be anywhere, from your home to selected venues, food choices can be important for many
Although there has been a significant increase in alternate funeral venue locations, the church still holds a pivotal focus for many families. The key to the selection of a funeral venue is relevance and meaning and without consideration of these two factors, the funeral can sometimes seem hollow to some.
Finally, there are those that do not wish to celebrate or commemorate in a formal way and the rise of unattended or direct cremation is increasing at a rapid rate. we have all heard someone say, “don’t fuss over me, just bury me in a cardboard box”. For many, this has now become a reality. However, burial is not normally the chosen form of disposition in Melbourne, cremation is.
Sandringham Yacht Club, over incredible views across Port Phillip Bay
So why are families choosing unattended cremation services? For some, it is cost as it is the lowest cost option available, but for most, it is the simplest and least complicated types of services. Many families still have some type of service or event after the cremation and the can diverse, from large memorial services to small intimate lunches.
So in planning your funeral event location here are some key guides:
Ensure you use a funeral professional with the skill and ear to listen to what you want from the day.
Choose services and locations that are relevant to you and your family.
Services can be held at any time, day, evening weekends, so choose a time that is relevant
Don’t choose services based on what you think you must have or have had before.
Keep in mind the number of mourners likely to attend
Robert Nelson is a fifth-generation funeral director and founder of Robert Nelson Funerals. Based in Moorabbin they service all Melbourne Areas, including Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas.
Choosing Your funeral venue, the where and how as to where people are now having funeral and memorial services across Melbourne When choosing where to have a funeral your choices have now grown. Restaurants, bars, reception centres, wineries, gardens, sports clubs, private homes the choices are now only limited by your imagination.

Looking for an Electrician Melbourne?
If you are looking for a suitable electrician Melbourne, talk to Fisher Brothers Electrical Contractors. Not every electrical contractor is created equal. You can choose to call the first company that appears in online search results or the yellow pages. Or, you can decide to contact a company with a proven track record in residential and commercial property maintenance going back decades.
Fisher Brothers Offer the following Services:
Home property maintenance and servicing
Residential property maintenance
Commercial property maintenance
Thermal image scanning

Preventative maintenance and servicing
Facility maintenance
Programmed maintenance
Is Fisher Brother a Suitable Electrician Melbourne?
There are many reasons Fisher Brothers are your to-go-to electrician Melbourne. The first reason you should consider them is that they have been serving Melbourne homeowners for years. They have seen a lot of electrical installation and repair problems and solving them has given them considerable experience. Hiring them ensures that proven professionals complete your work. Additionally, they provide references and charge reasonable prices. Here are other reasons you should consider using their services:
Hire a Well-trained and Licensed Electrician Melbourne
Why work with an electrician Melbourne of ascertainable credentials when there are companies such as Fisher Brothers Electrical Contractors who use highly trained and licensed technicians? Fisher brothers are registered electrical contractors. Always make sure that the electrical contractor's you hire has a license which is current.
They Use Modern Diagnostic Techniques
A technician could be good, but if they do not have the right tools, they are likely to make mistakes or produce poor-quality work. Fisher Brothers use thermal image scanning to ensure there are no errors when checking your electrical system for problems.
They Do Preventative Maintenance and Servicing
Fires whose source is traceable to electrical causes are quite frequent. Every year, hundreds of people sustain injuries, and many others die after involvement in devastating electrical accidents. Commercial and residential property owners lose millions of dollars when such disasters occur. Many of these tragedies are a result of using faulty products, incorrect installation, and poor maintenance of electrical equipment.
Preventative Maintenance Delays Equipment Degradation
While you may not control the deterioration of electrical equipment, hiring a company that understands preventative maintenance helps. Preventative maintenance can delay equipment failure. It also ensures that an electrician Melbourne detects and corrects causes of equipment degradation early enough.
When hiring an electrician Melbourne, do not just hire any licensed electrician Melbourne. Ensure they are registered, use the right products and diagnostic tools, and implement preventative maintenance and servicing.
