Why musicians make weird facial expressions

Have you ever noticed the expressions of musicians as they are in the midst of a composition? Have you realized how much they seem to enjoy the nuances of their craft? Over time, I have seen a huge variety of artists but I can also admit that musicians are the ones who are visibly enjoying their crafts more than others.

Take the example of a painter. Well, he or she is obviously satisfied and visibly happy after completion of a masterpiece, but rarely will you see an artist happy during production. Here's another example- a tennis player. While running after the ball the person will always be showing signs of either wearing out or of general exertion. However, he or she may occasionally exult after winning a particularly long rally, or at the end of the entire match. At least I can certainly not consider the tennis player for expressing joy "in the moment", for most of the match.

Most of the above is probably due to the way artist brains function. At the heart of every musical masterpiece is the desire to stir emotional responses. That is probably musicians themselves are wired differently as well. Creativity draws from several regions of the brain, and that is what we see at the end. When it comes to watching musicians live, it is a dramatization of their complete musical journeys, how hard they have worked over the years, the sweat and the tears. And yes, absolute and unconditional love for music and their own instruments.
