I think part of the problem when discussing Cyberpunk in general and cybernetics in specific is that there are some very very deep questions that the idea raises. What makes a person a person, how much will changes to your body affect you psychologically? Is there a legitimate question of psychological disorders that might arise from the intentional removal of healthy tissue for non-organic replacements? At what point do you stop being a person and start being just a very structurally unsound CPU for a robot?

And then you ask those questions there's some jackass who feels obligated to jump in and say 'How dare you, that's my fetish there can be NOTHING wrong with the idea and you're a bigot for even asking if there could be!'

And I'm just left here going 'I legitimately don't care if you want to be Adrián Barbeaubot, I just want to ask these questions of the little mouse who's taken over the hollowed out spaces where your brain used to be and is now piloting your body like a meat mecha.'

'Is the reason why people do not see government run industry as a monopoly because they are presented as services instead' is a very interesting question and a valid one to be asked. Because jesus now that I think of it, that literally IS my perspective on things, that I do not object to the State doing certain things because they are 'services', that these are the tasks I hire the government to do, and ONLY want the government doing.

But honest to fuck that I had to do this journey of self-discovery all on my own because ancaps can't be fucking bothered to think past their own biases is a fucking trip.

You know, simple thought that struck me yesterday but I didn't really have the specifics of what I wanted to say until this morning?

the whole KPP thing proves without a shadow of a doubt that so many people on this website would have gleefully become nazi's. Not because they're somehow racist, that's not the thing.

But because when they were given a meme and a target, they gleefully jumped into making a person's life hell, just for the fun of it, lifted up by the bullshit excuse that they were attacking a 'worthy' target.

They didn't have any knowledge of the situation, they didn't have context, they had an 'acceptable' target and a 'fun!' way of attacking them. And so they did it, without any prompting.

Without any profit, any threats against them, without anything to force their hands. They just attacked, for the pure joy of attacking, and considered themselves heroic in doing so.

And so many of them, I'm sure, will take this statement as harassment of THEM, for pointing out that they did no good thing in this.

It's just how Tumblr is.

The Goth

Nina did not ask to wake up in an artificial body, forever robbed of her humanity. Designed to be absolutely perfect eye candy. But if anyone HAD asked, she would have said, "FUCK YES!"

She'd have objected to it if she'd known the details, the kind of person the man who abducted her was. But she didn't, and it wasn't as if she was granted a choice. Instead she was granted cybernetic immortality, a body that lived up to the dreams she'd long had but never expected to live out, and absolutely no connection remaining to her past. Who would blame her for abandoning everything she'd had and taking advantage of her new start, her new life?

Okay, so there are SOME downsides. She can't access most of the equipment of the Lab she woke up in, she has to make sure the systems don't revive the mad bastard who made the body she now has, and has to figure out how to carve a space for herself in a world that never expected to have her in it. No name, no identity...

But she's got all the lab's resources, the scientists' finances, and the body she'd always dreamed of. One most men (and a few women) would lust after. She can dress how she's always wanted. Live how she's always wanted. No regrets.

Yeah, she's going to be the goth slut she'd always wanted to be.

Maybe she'll even become a hero.

One part perfect Sexbot, one part advanced cyborg. Really, explaining the body of Nina is the easy part. You know the kinds of stories you occasionally see in anime? Where some mad scientist abducts someone to do inhumane experiments on? Occasionally they’ll give their victim some kind of superhuman body to live in?

Take that, at it’s hentai worst. Body designed to be desired, super-humanly strong (to handle whatever the scientist threw at her) resilient (to survive whatever he threw at her) able to self-repair with nanites, a computer back-up for her mind (so he could reset her if anything he did to her actually broke her) and… Well, let’s just say she has an artificial womb and other ‘functionalities’ and leave it at that.

It was meant to be a torment. It was MEANT to torture the person he put into the body, to allow him to do unspeakable things to a victim who could never escape from it, never be free from the inventive and disturbing experiments.

The doctor died of a heart attack when ‘Nina’ woke up after the installation and the first words out of her mouth were "Oh god thank you it’s a miracle!"

He should have chosen his random victim a bit less… randomly.

"So. I... Well, I always wanted to go cosplay at a convention. I couldn't before all this for... reasons. But now, well, I can right? And I've got the look already down pat so I get together what I need for this KILLER 'The Major' costume. Silver leotard that looks sexy as FUCK, black gloves, leather jacket, the belt, the boots... I got it all. And because I'm planning on partying in the evening, I've got some goggles and a gas mask on me."

"Listen, it's expected, alright? Some things just... are, ok?"

"Anyway I'm dressed for the con and I'm just stopping in a bank to... What? No, I'm not worried about the weather, I don't sweat anymore! Anyway I'm just stopping in to hit the ATM for some funds and some fucker comes in to rob the place! Shot a security guard, was holding a little kid hostage! I had to do something, right? But it's not like I have a REAL identity and I certainly don't want the cops to question why I've got no fingerprints or anything."

"So, yeah. I slip on the mask and goggles, then confront the shooter. So yeah, I got shot but that's not a problem to me anymore. I TOTALLY beat him up and got away while everyone was just sagging in relief. I thought, 'no harm done, except for my cosplay, and I can get the Nanites to fix that for me'."

"Except guess what? I forgot about the news! By mid-day I was all over the local TV as 'mysterious Vigilante' and by the end of the night? I come home from the club to find out now I'm called 'The Cybergoth Hero'."

"Ugh. At least I can change my hair color, nobody thinks it's ME. Not that anybody really knows who I am either..."

Nina is... Well, to be honest to understand Nina is to know the jokes that formed her.

I WANTED to make a goth, OR a cyborg. And I was commenting about that, when a friend of mine made the joke ‘A cybergoth’ and Nina popped full born into my mind.

Nina is... Well, I wrote this down before and I can cut and paste her backstory real fast. :P

My father once told me you can learn nearly everything you need to know about a person by seeing how they fight. So, for reasons unexplained, Nina and Misha get into a fight. How does it go down?

Not well? That’s possibly the worst combo because Nina is a high tech cyborg… and Misha MAKES high tech cyborgs.

Nina’s way of fighting is generally brute strength. She doesn’t know all of her potential yet (and may never know if I can’t get the RP’s I need for her) but because her entire power set is about having a strong, durable body, she throws herself into combat with more will than skill. Untrained, unprepared, but willing and able to soak damage, knowing that if worse comes to worse, she’ll survive and spawn anew from the Lab.

Misha? Summons a squad of combat robots to do the fighting for her, while she sits back and directs them. It’s just what she does. She makes robots, why not use them for her defense? In close quarters she’s used to using her transformation gun to turn opponents into less threatening shapes.

In the interest of openness (and because I like the profile) this is the details for Nina, or N4N1. It includes a lot (tho not all) of the things ya’ll have helped me flesh out for her over the past day or so.

Soon. Soon I will have to get art of her too. ;.; That’s the hard part. But I can’t borrow other people’s work forever, or even for long.

Okay the latter is easy to explain, because that OC is also my icon at the moment, and I have her tag ready at hand.

Nina was just an ordinary woman. Probably older than she wants to admit, and frumpier than she wants to admit. You’ll never get her to admit to such, and you couldn’t tell from looking at her now.

Somewhere along the way she was abducted by a mad scientist and had her brain extracted, her body destroyed, and her consciousness transferred into the perfect sex doll. She was intended to be an eternal torture subject, given an easily replaceable, immortal cyborg body and a brain that could be reset at any time of the scientist’s desire. He thought her reaction to waking up as a young gothy sexpot would be shock and horror.

When her reaction was one of shock and JOY, he had a heart attack out of pure surprise. Needless to say, without anyone to direct the lab’s supercomputer, she got past it’s safeguards eventually and started living a free life in the body of her dreams. Somewhere along the lines she stopped a bank robbery while dressed up for cosplay at a convention. It’s a thing.

The former?

The Gentleman Mage used to be known of as Albion, the divine spirit of the island now called England. But due to the treachery of Merlin, she was sealed away for over a thousand years, only freed because the last descendant of Arthur (via Mordred’s line) found out about her and helped free her.

But being sealed away for centuries has left Albion… Changed. After all, she was awoken during the times where ‘Perfidious Albion’ was a common remark about England, and the empire that her people had formed stretched across the world.

So, for decades she took up a role as a masked criminal, a wicked master of criminality, mostly out of a desire to enjoy herself and the material form she’d gained. Because her powers are now rather immense, she can shape her form into any appearance she desires, tho she tends to prefer a default of ‘Very busty Redhead with black streaks in her hair.’

And yes, she’s generally played as ‘retired supervillain looking for fun in all the wrong places.’

I like that you have Nina the characterization of wanting to feel joy. Too many people fall into the trap of HARDCORE ANGST right off the bat(I like myself some angst but happier OCs seem seems to be rare)

A large part of Nina (or at least, of what makes Nina fun, she was made based on a joke at first, and then fleshed out as ideas combined) was the knowledge that these days, there are people who really REALLY would love a perfectly healthy cyborg body where nothing goes wrong and you look like how you want to look like, forever.

And the thought of the old cliche came to me, ‘Oh I’m an unfeeling robot, what am I now, am I even alive?’ and it’s… Cliche. And it’s not even 100% accurate anymore, because as stated. Many people would embrace that kind of change.

Thus, Nina. For whom Angst was left behind with the body she was stuck in, health issues and all. Her cyborg transformation took away ALL the bad things from her life, so fuck it!
