The Impact of Social Support Networks on Mental Health: An OT Perspective

Our relationships with friends, family, and community members have a big impact on our happiness and general well-being. However, some people find it difficult to establish and maintain these relationships. Occupational therapy (OT) can help with that. (Golden-User, 2024)

Why Are Social Connections Important:

1. Emotional Support: Good relationships offer a strong support system. When you have people to talk to, share experiences with, and lean on, it’s easier to handle life’s ups and downs. Emotional support helps reduce stress and makes tough times more manageable. (Hood, 2020)

2. Better Health: Studies show that people with strong social networks tend to be healthier. They have lower rates of illness and better immune systems. Social support encourages healthier habits and can even speed up recovery from illness or injury. (Umberson & Montez, 2010)

3. Happiness and Well-being: Being connected with others boosts our mood and increases life satisfaction. Positive interactions help reduce feelings of loneliness, improve self-esteem, and provide a sense of belonging and purpose. (Mayo Clinic, 2022)

4. Coping with Challenges: Friends and family provide practical help and encouragement, making it easier to face and overcome challenges. A supportive network can help build resilience and improve our ability to cope with difficult situations. (Thatcher, 2020)

How Occupational Therapy Supports Social Connections:

1. Developing Social Skills: Occupational therapists assist people in developing social skills like reading social cues and communicating with others. OT offers specific ways to facilitate and improve social relationships for people with social problems, such as autism or anxiety etc.

2. Encouraging Community Involvement: OT practitioners assist people in finding ways to connect with their communities. This might include joining local groups, participating in events, or volunteering. Getting involved helps build social networks and fosters a sense of community. (Gallant, 2022)

3. Integrating Social Activities into Daily Life: Occupational therapists assist people in integrating social activities into their everyday routines. This could be arranging frequent visits with friends and family, organising events for a group, or figuring out how to fit social time into daily living.

4. Addressing Mental Health: Many OT programs focus on mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety, which can impact social interactions. By helping manage these conditions, OT supports individuals in building and maintaining healthy relationships. (Homewood Health Centre, 2023)

5. Supporting Families and Caregivers: OT also helps families and caregivers improve communication and understanding. This support helps strengthen family bonds and creates a more supportive environment.

The quote above summarises my blog. The importance of social connections and how social support can allow us as human beings to achieve so much more together.

Social support networks or systems refers to a network of people such as friends family, colleagues, that individuals can turn to for guidance or advice in times of need. Social support networks can also include the local community as well as social media, forums and online support groups. (Developing Your Support System, n.d.) Social support networks are an imperative part of a person’s well-being. With individuals that suffer from mental health concerns, social support forms a great part of recovery.

Social connections serve as protection against chronic disease and serious illness. High quality relationships can help people live longer, healthier lives. (CDC, 2024). Social support networks provide emotional support, practical assistance, and a sense of belonging, which are important for coping with life's challenges. They also encourage healthy behaviours, such as regular physical activity and adherence to medical treatments, further contributing to overall health (Forsman et al., 2012)

In OT, the importance of building and maintaining a social support network to optimize physical and mental health is recognized. (Gallant, 2022)

OTs aid in building social connections by:

*Assessing social participation- to identify barriers an areas that require further intervention, these areas can include, social skills training, social norms awareness and well as social judgement. Addressing social skills training can be done through role play, group activities to improve IPRs. OTs aid clients in building manful connections with others.

*Group therapy has been shown to have significant benefits to MHCUs and is also efficient with the therapists' time, which makes it a vital tool in mental health care (Radnitz et al., 2019). OTs use group therapy to see how individuals interact with others to intervene where necessary for social skills training. For OTs group therapy can be used as an imperative tool for building social connections by interaction

*Facilitating community engagement- OTs can collaborate with clients to discover relevant and accessible community resourced that may serve as support networks for their clients. These could include support groups online or in person, clubs or volunteer groups. Engaging in community activities not only builds social networks but also provides a sense of purpose and fulfilment (Forsman et al., 2012). OTs can start the process for clients to attend weekly support groups held in their local community, sign clients up for online chat forums that have topics related to their relevant struggles as well as joining leisure clubs.

In conclusion the picture I have added to end off my blog displays visually, the importance of social support and maintaining healthy relationships. Human being are innately social beings where social interaction is a necessity. Maintaining relationships with others fills the gaps for us as human beings. Especially with people with mental illness social interaction, participation and engagement all form part of giving them a sense of belonging they require for well-being.

58 Years Later or Sole Survivor

"We could always brag on Antoinette, because she was beautiful and the rest of us were not, and she had a sweet voice and many of us didn’t, and she was orthodox and some of us were not."¹ This is how Susan B. Anthony introduced  Antoinette Brown Blackwell at an 1898 event honoring the life of Lucy Stone, who had died a few years earlier.

Born in Henrietta, New York on May 20, 1825, Antoinette Brown would become one of the pioneers of the woman suffrage movement and as she says in her own words, "I began to speak for equal rights in 1846 at Rochester, Mich., and spoke again at Henrietta, N. Y., in 1847, so I was before the organized movement." ²  Antoinette not only began speaking of suffrage early on, she also became the first woman in the United States who dared to venture in to a career that was exclusively the domain of the male gender.

58 Years Later or Sole Survivor refers to two significant events that define the life of Antoinette Brown Blackwell and her story in the suffrage and equal rights movement. It took 58 years for her to finally receive acknowledgement of the labor and learning she devoted to the study of theology as a student at Oberlin College. A classmate and confidant of Lucy Stone, Antoinette earned a literary degree in 1847 from the College and continued there, taking classes in the Divinity School where in 1850 upon completion of the course she was denied the degree. On Sunday, June 21, 1908, fifty-eight years later, Oberlin made a point to ameliorate this former injustice by conferring on Antoinette Brown Blackwell the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity when she was eighty-four years old.

As the sole survivor of the pioneering group of women which advocated for equal rights and suffrage in the United States in the 1840s and 1850s, it was Antoinette who was destined to witness the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment. Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony all died much earlier without seeing the prized fruit of their labor. Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Antoinette Brown Blackwell, preacher, teacher, philosopher, champion of equal justice and Oberlin College alumna.

A Peek into the Life of a Crane Operator

For David, it’s always a thrilling experience.

David, 49, is working as a crane operator for the past 25 years with a crane rental agency and has been operating cranes confidently during the busiest phases of construction and to tight schedules.

“The work life of a tower crane operator is filled with responsibilities. Getting the tower crane to the construction site is the first challenge when my working day starts. The next one is climbing up the crane for its routine inspection.”, says David.

His main duty is to operate the crane used for lifting and relocate the construction materials and heavy objects. He is responsible to operate the levers on the control console and control crane movements.

After the routine checkup, he notes his observations and jots downs what work needs to be done.

David wakes up early in the morning and is the first to arrive at the site. Since tower cranes are easily affected by heavy winds, storms and other climate changes, David, as a responsible crane operator notices the behavior of weather and then commences his work. After the team shows up, he discusses with them the work tasks and goals associated with them.

Working alone from a height of 500 feet in a crane is a stressful task. A crane operator works from a small control room on the deck of the crane for many hours until the task is completed. A small human or equipment error may lead to huge accidents causing loss of equipment or life.

But David is experienced and mature enough to handle a critical situation.

He remembers, “Initially, I used to become anxious even with a slight sway of a tower because of wind. The tension would affect my concentration on work. This would also impact my communication with ground crane operators. But, with time, I adjusted myself with such situations. This job improves your mental strength.”

He further tells, “I always pay attention at the movements of other equipment and people on the ground. I cannot take them for granted. But this doesn’t mean I work with a tense mind. I always take decisions calmly. It’s really a thrilling experience when going up and working from there. I can experience the mesmerizing beauty of early morning city.”

Talking about his family’s attitude towards his nature of the job, David proudly says, “My family has been always supportive of me. During the initial days of my work, my wife used to worry a lot about me climbing the crane and working from such height. But, when my projects became successful and I got an appreciation for my responsible work management, she became stress-free.”

He further adds, “However, whenever my mother watches any crane accident news on the television, she gets scared and asks me to change my job. Otherwise, she is also proud of her son’s achievements.”

David is satisfied with his job life and expresses his will to work as a crane operator as long as his body allows him.

The story of David is almost similar to the stories of many crane operators around the world with some variations.

Crane operators work with various types of cranes like tower cranes, mobile cranes, truck cranes, crawler cranes etc.

Each crane has its unique way of functioning. A well-trained crane operator is expected to know all the ins and outs of the crane that he is going to handle.

Challenges for a Crane Operator:

•    Changing weather conditions is the biggest antagonist of all crane operators. They try to work productively in all weather and temperature conditions. Some of these conditions are:

1.    Wind gusts affecting the safe lifting process of a load.

2.    Cold temperatures affecting the hydraulic features.

3.    The load becomes unpredictable if it has more sail area.

4.    Heavy rains, fog or snow can create visibility distortion at dangerous levels.

•    Another major challenge for crane operators is variations in ground conditions. For a proper crane set-up, the ground must be leveled with good soil conditions. Poor ground and soil conditions can cause a crane to slip or sink causing damage to the equipment.

Safety and Qualifications:

Before the crane operation, the crane operator must ensure the proper setup and planning of the equipment for safe and efficient task performance.

He should spend enough time to:

•    Complete systematic checks on the equipment.

•    Closely examine the crane for any leaks, cable wear, electrical gauge issues etc.

•    Check computer LMI issues.

He should see that all the staffs working with the crane are qualified to signal and rig the loads in a correct manner.

A bad judgement, communication or signal may increase the risk of a crane collapse.

Increased safety policies and regulations in the crane industry are leading individuals to seek more advanced training and certifications.
