My opinion on the 2022 FIFA World Cup groups

Good morning. I felt like doing a quick post about the 2022 FIFA World Cup, just because, this way, I somewhat "warm up" in order to write for Camp NaNoWriMo.

Anyway, the eight groups have been drawn yesterday. Why would they do this on April Fool's Day is beyond me, but, well, let's see them.

GROUP A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands

Two continental champions on the same group seems nice. Qatar, as the reigning champions of Asia, have the home ground at their disposal, as they have to face an Ecuador side in really good shape in the inaugural match.

Senegal, which just became champion of Africa, is at its third World Cup, and aims at doing much better than in 2018, when they were out in the group stage. As with the Netherlands, well, everyone should always expect great things when the Dutch are involved.

GROUP B: England, Iran, USA, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine

England and USA in the same group seems like a nice pairing. I really want to see these two countries clash. Of course, we'll know later this year who will the fourth member be.

GROUP C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland

Argentina, Mexico and Poland are promising this time, and good things can come out with these three teams. Of course, I wouldn't completely rule out Saudi Arabia just because they have to face three good teams. In 2018, Iceland came really close to eliminate Argentina, after all.

GROUP D: France, Peru/Australia/UAE, Denmark, Tunisia

The reigning World Champions need to face a team that, in the last Euros, proved to be a surprising powerhouse. Perhaps, the two European teams may have the upper hand on the others, but, hey, it's the World Cup. Besides, the last three World Champions didn't exactly have a good follow up WC, so the bleus can't just rest on their laurels.

GROUP E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan

If Costa Rica is the team that qualifies, then three of the World's best goalkeepers will be in the same group, which would make things really interesting, since scoring may be quite difficult. Of course, New Zealand is looking for its World Cup return, 12 years after the last one.

Spain VS Germany, if both teams are in great shape, could prove which one could have the better chance of actually winning this.

GROUP F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia

The runner up and 3rd place team of the previous World Cup facing each other. They could both try to confirm their places as footballing powerhouses.

GROUP G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon

I love how Brazil got a vibrant group with three teams who usually act as "wild cards", as in you never truly know what to expect from them until you face them. This could turn out to be really interesting.

GROUP H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

Somehow, this group feels both balanced and unbalanced. I really don't know what to expect from this.

2 goals, 2 assists: Man City prodigy learning from Sane & Sterling is one to watch - opinion

Holland’s U17 side crashed out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage following a penalty shootout defeat against Mexico.

One major positive to take from the competition though, was the form of Jayden Braaf, who scored two goals and provided two assists in six appearances.

Against Senegal, in their second game, the teenager hit the bar, teased and tormented and generally made one hell of an impact.

Making one hell of an impact is what the Amsterdam-born talent does. Having joined Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad on his sixteenth birthday last summer Braaf impressed in his first year, appearing for the under 18s, under 19s and scoring twice in a EFL Trophy win against a Rochdale side that featured many of their first team.

In the latter fixture only the woodwork deprived him of a hat-trick while his second of the night displayed what he is all about: first twisting the full-back’s blood before calmly dispatching a low shot into the far corner.

So notable were his performances drifting in from the left to capitalise on a wicked right foot that City wasted no time in tying him down to professional terms, with a contract that runs until 2023 and with his future committed to Braaf can now look to the distance and the challenge to break through into Pep Guardiola’s squad of superstars.

First though there is the Under 23s to navigate and following his fast-tracked promotion to the higher level.

The electric prospect, who has admitted to learning a lot from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane, is well on his way to passing that test with flying colours.

In the Ukraine at the start of this campaign Braaf was involved in all three of City’s goals in their UEFA Youth League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk and it is performances such as these that recently led his manager Paul Harsley to say: “You can see with the goals he has scored and the chances he has created that – whether he goes outside or inside – he gives opposition defences all sorts of problems.”

His exhilarating wing-play has also, somewhat inevitably, drawn comparisons with Jadon Sancho, City’s previous attacking prodigy who left for Borussia Dortmund to fully fulfil his potential while another City support on Twitter offers up a revealing insight into how highly Braaf is rated by those in the know.

Jayden Braaf is already better than Jadon Sancho.

“I’m good on one-v-ones and I like the responsibility. It’s the beginning,” the youngster said earlier this term but though these are undoubtedly exciting times for the flyer – and growing proof too that City have unearthed a genuine gem – determining what it’s the beginning of leads us to some uncertainty.

The Leroy Sane to Bayern transfer saga rumbles on, with the German expected to move once fully rehabilitated of his long-term injury.

But surely this will come too soon for a player yet to celebrate his 18th birthday to step up as a replacement; surely he will need at least another year of development before he gets even a sniff of first team action.

This explains Manchester City’s keen interest in Real Sociedad wide-man Mikel Oyazabal and should the 22-year-old head to the Premier league that then gives City a full compliment again of attacking flair.

Sterling. Oyarzabal. Bernardo Silva. Riyad Mahrez. Regardless of Braaf’s promise it will be an intimidating task to jump such a queue. It will nigh-on impossible.

That though is a concern that can very much be put on hold for now.

At present Jayden Braaf is excelling and improving in equal measure.

He is one to watch for sure.

Domestic football takes its second pause for the 2019-20 season as the international window steps forward.

And it might well be that you’re looking for some inspiration; without a club team to reliably check in on, and with your nation perhaps not playing games of the utmost importance, you need something to tune in to.

We’ve got you covered.

As B/R Football Ranks host Jack Collins proclaimed during the last international window, there’s a lot of fun to be had during this period—if you know where to look, and if you watch the right teams and games.

Here, we’ve ranked the top 10 most exciting teams to watch in international football, hopefully handing you a few ideas on when and where to lay your gaze over the next week-and-a-bit.

10. Algeria

Key reason: Exciting, slick football

The reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions are always likely to be a decent watch, and Algeria live up to the hype.

Riyad Mahrez is still the face of the team, and the form he’s begun this Premier League season in bodes well for the Fennecs’ hopes of victory this month. His connection with Islam Slimani, who has rediscovered his scoring boots at Monaco, is a serious danger to any defence.

Midfielder Ismael Bennacer won the Africa Cup of Nations Best Player award this summer, and that helped secure a high-profile move to AC Milan. Things haven’t quite gone to plan for him at San Siro so far, but he could well revert back to his controlling, metronomic best in Algeria colours.

And perhaps the most eye-catching attraction on show—yes, even more so than Mahrez—is rumbling right-sider Youcef Atal, who should be on most top clubs’ shopping lists in 2020. Watching him carry the ball forward is exciting for viewers but petrifying for opponents.

Fixture to watch: Algeria vs. Colombia (October 15, 8 p.m UK / 3 p.m. ET)

9. Kosovo

Key reason: Potential to make history

An independent nation since 2008. Only recognised by FIFA since 2016. Nine of their first 10 games lost as the difficult realities of international football hit home hard and fast.

And yet, Kosovo have emerged from the other side of that baptism of fire, adapting and creating a template for exciting football with a good group of players on the fly.

It took an opponent of England’s calibre to end their unbeaten run of 15 games last month, with the defeat finally coming in a 5-3 thriller.

In Milot Rashica and Bersant Celina, Kosovo have a pair of creative midfield engines that excite and ignite, while Arber Zeneli can help supply striker Vedat Muriqi.

Euro 2020 qualification is possible if they can find a way to get results in their next three games, starting with Montenegro at home next week. What an incredible achievement that would be if they manage it.

8. Venezuela

Key reason: Literally anything can happen in their games

Venezeula are football’s answer to Forrest Gump’s famous “box of chocolates” quip; it really is impossible to know exactly what you’re going to get out of them results- and performance-wise, but you will enjoy what you see.

There’s a nice mix of in-form, established stars (like Salomon Rondon and Darwin Machis) and emerging, talented youngsters (like Yangel Herrera and Yeferson Soteldo) in this squad.

Moving forward and into 2020, expect to see plenty of the exhilarating prospects from their under-20 side, such as Jan Carlos Hurtado, Christian Makoun and Samuel Sosa—all names you should store in your minds—break into the team and begin to impress.

If Venezuela find their gear, they’re a team that purrs; if they don’t and become besieged, enigmatic goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez is a joy to watch as he pulls off incredible saves left and right.

It’s win-win, no matter what happens, for the viewer.

Fixture to watch: Venezuela vs. Bolivia (October 10, 11 p.m UK / 6 p.m. ET)

7. Senegal

Key reason: Stacked squad

Senegal’s collection of players is quite something.

It’s headed up by familiar star names in Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly, but scratch a little further beneath the surface and you’ll find a mass of talent that all start—or are good enough to start—for top European sides.

Moussa Wague of Barcelona and Salif Sane of Schalke form part of a good defence, which is backed up by an excellent goalkeeper in Edouard Mendy. Midfielder Idrissa Gueye has made Paris Saint-Germain impervious to attacks so far this season, and he can do the same for Senegal.

In Ismaila Sarr (Watford), Krepin Diatta (Club Brugge), Keita Balde (Monaco) and M’Baye Niang (Rennes), they have so much variation in attack to switch up approaches.

Charismatic coach Aliou Cisse has the Lions of Teranga playing good football and winning games. That will be put to a stern test this month, though!
