Music was your life. Your parents often joked that you were singing before you uttered your first word. Unfortunately, there were no music clubs during your past two years of high school. It was only last year that you and the glee club won nationals, hence why you were able to keep funding. School administration was never really fond of the arts, but they would bend over backward to give the sports clubs whatever they needed.

Your biggest dream was to get a scholarship, preferably for music, since you excelled at it. All your life, you watched your father slave away to keep you happy. You just wanted to repay his kindness. Abruptly, your dream, which entailed you winning a grammy, was disrupted by the ringing of your alarm clock. Your arm stretched over to your nightstand, turning the device off, bringing the sound to a halt.

Slowly, you removed the sheets off your body, standing up for a brief stretch before walking to your bathroom. You went about your morning routine much quicker than you typically would. Mostly due to your excitement, this year would be the first that you spent closer to the top of the social food chain. Over the summer, your dad became fast friends with Coach Sylvester. She had come over a few times. And although their relationship was strictly platonic, they both had grown fond of each other. A week before school, she offered you a spot on the cheerios, one you couldn't turn down. Cheerleaders were at the very top of the pyramid. Girls wanted to be them while boys wanted to be with them.

Once you had finished doing the bare necessities your morning required, you hastily made your way to your closet, immediately reaching for one of the three cheerleading uniforms hanging on the rack. You stripped out of your pajamas before slipping into the skimpy skirt, unaware that you had an admirer. Michael had moved next door a few months into your freshman year, was a rather charming boy. He quickly became a hot commodity, no doubt due to how impeccably handsome he was. You were never too fond of him, but even you had to admit that he was a divine sight.

It never truly bothered you that the window into your room was straight across from the one piercing into his. But if you could see the look of satisfaction on his face as he watched you undress, you'd feel very unnerved. The boy had always felt attracted to you. He saw you as a challenge. You were one of the few students in your grade who was still a virgin. Not due to your looks, you frankly didn't have the time to go to parties or hook up with people. Your focus was on your education. And if getting into a great school meant sacrificing your social life, you were content with that.

Once you had finished getting your uniform on and slicking your hair into a neat updo, you gathered your things into your bag and hurried downstairs for breakfast. "Mornin' kiddo!" Your dad said, greeting you with a smile. You muttered a cheerful 'hey' in response, walking towards one of the cabinets full of cereal boxes. "Oh, I forgot to tell you. My car had to get fixed up last night so, I'll have to take yours today." You shrugged as a reply, not caring. "So am I taking the bus today?" Your father shook his head, reaching for a spoon at the same time. "No. That nice boy next door offered to give you a ride today. Isn't that sweet?"

Fuck- you thought to yourself, of course, the universe found some way to screw up your day. You took a long sigh before shifting your eyes to the clock on the wall. "Shit! I'm sorry, dad. I'd love to eat breakfast, but the Glee meeting starts in 20 minutes." Your dad shrugged, not too bothered. "It's fine, go have fun and tell Michael I said hello." You nodded to your old man, and with that, you were up and out the door.

As soon as you stepped foot outside, there he was. Hair perfectly curled, toothpick dangling from his soft lips. You sighed, walking towards the blonde, waiting for him to get out of the way. "Wow, you become a cheerleader, and now you think you're hot shit?" He spat, you gave him a death glare before pushing him lightly to get inside the car. He followed suit, taking his place in the driver's seat. "As much as I find you annoying, your ass does look great in that skirt." You scoffed, rolling your eyes at the boy as he started driving. "Listen up, Pillsbury fuckboy. Though this might seem hard to understand, I don't like you. And I'd rather not spend my senior year arguing with someone as unbearable as you, so can you please leave me alone?!"

The blonde chuckled at your response. Your mouth said one thing while your thoughts said another. "Your wish is my command." He mumbled sarcastically before reaching to turn up the music on the radio to an obscene volume. The rest of the car ride was entirely uneventful, neither of you uttering a word to each other. Ultimately, you had reached the school parking lot. Not many cars were there since it was early, and only a few clubs were meeting today. Before Michael could do anything, you swiftly got out the car, making sure to slam it loudly. "Don't fucking slam the door!" He said, his voice reaching you even though you were still walking, in response you promptly flipped him off. "Fucking bitch." He uttered lowly as you slowly left his field of view.

"Welcome back, New Directions!" Glee's coach, Mr.Shue, said as you embraced your friends. "As you know, this will be our last year together, and a few of our beloved friends have left for college already. Which means we'll be having auditions for some newcomers." As he spoke, he walked over to the whiteboard, grabbing his trusted magic marker. "But there's a twist." You and everyone else in the room watched as he wrote out the words American Idol. "This time, you'll be judging with me."

You would typically be seated next to Tina and Mercedes, but they were both absent for the meeting. Instead, you sat with Santana on your left and Quinn to your right. You had to admit that it felt nice. Usually, you wouldn't ponder on things so benign. But you had spent most of high school getting teased by Michael and the rest of his sought after friends. Not a day went by that slushies weren't thrown in your face, now you could finally walk the halls without fear of humiliation. 

Besides that, you were also really ecstatic to help Mr. Shue with auditions. Glee club was what had brought a group of entirely different people together. So you'd be more than glad to share that with a new ensemble of students before you all went your final ways.

The rest of your day went by quicker than usual. There wasn't much to learn on the first day. Once the clock hit 3:30, You rushed to the auditorium as if your life depended on it. You had to admit that you missed the stage, singing, and dancing with your friends. You made your way the middle of the seating area, taking your place beside Artie.

A majority of the auditions were lackluster. Only a handful stood out. Like that girl Marley and that kid Jake. You were just about ready to leave and go home until something caught your attention. "Michael Langdon?" Your eyes lit up immediately as you heard the name. You watched as the blue-eyed boy made his way to the stage, smug look on his face.

There was no way in hell Michael fucking Langdon, the same boy who referred to glee as "homo explosion," would ever willingly audition. His rendition of "Suit and Tie" was incredible, which only pissed you off more. Not only was he insanely attractive, but he just had to be talented too, fucking men.

You watched as your fellow glee members watched in amusement. It was the girls who seemed most excited.  Eventually, it all became too much, and before the boy could finish entertaining your friends, you stormed off into the parking lot. Far too upset with the blonde to drive home with him, you sent your friend Mike a text asking if he could get you. He lived pretty close to the school, so you knew it would only take a few minutes.

By the time Mike had pulled up to the building, the other glee kids were exiting. You quickly reached for the door of his car, rushing to get to the passenger seat. "You alright?" He asked, worried by how fidgety you were. You nodded. "Yea, I just wanna go home." Mike was always very comforting. The two of you became friends during your freshman year, mostly because of how many classes you shared. You both had a love for music and were smart, so it wasn't long before you two clicked.

Within a few minutes, you had arrived at your house, Mike flashing you a smile. "Thank you for coming to get me. It means a lot." The dark-haired boy shrugged. "It's no biggie, see you tomorrow, cheerio." You rolled your eyes sarcastically. "Whatever, jock-face." And with that, you entered your home.

The house was currently empty. He was taking the night shift at the hospital so, he probably wouldn't come back till late at night. You walked up the stairs to your room, dropping your bag on the floor. After everything that had gone down today, you were exhausted. You quickly took off the scanty cheer uniform and slipped on your much softer penguin pajamas.

You practically threw yourself on the bed, hoping to get some rest, but were promptly distracted by a notification on your phone. The text, from an unknown number nonetheless, read 'look outside your window.' You quickly sat up, confused, and turned your head only for your eyes to be met by Michael Langdon, who just happened to be balls deep inside some random brunette. 

You gave the boy a disgusted look before pulling down your blinds. Never in your life had you been more repulsed. Your mind tried long and hard to block out any memory of what you just witnessed. After around forty-five minutes, you received another text message from non-other than Michael.

'It's a shame you missed my performance."

'Go fuck yourself, Langdon.'

'If you say so ;)'

The rest of the night, you wondered what you had done to be the new subject of Mr. Pillsbury Fuckboys torment. You had spent most of your high school years avoiding him at cost. Suddenly it seemed like you weren't getting rid of him anytime soon. You were just lucky you only had to endure this for a few more months, and then you'd be on your way.

Or so you thought.

Multiple update time: Reigate half, Sittingbourne 10 and Abingdon marathon

Oh dear, it’s been 3 months since I last wrote anything on here about my running, so now’s the time to get up to speed with what has been going on. 

After the Caterham half (detailed here) I looked at the goal races I had lined up and drew up a training plan. I actually only had two races booked in my calendar: the Reigate half marathon in mid September, and the Abingdon marathon five weeks later. So I decided to loosely follow the marathon training plan I used for my first ever marathon in Brighton in 2014, with Abingdon as the eventual finale and Reigate as one of the marathon tune-up runs. I always find training difficult in the warm summer months and during the school holidays, but this plan was doable because it shouldn’t mean excessive mileage (the greatest week being 55 miles, but most weeks between 40-50 miles). It also only meant five running days per week, so two days to fully rest and recover and not create any further injuries. I was hoping that training when it was warm would mean that the cool autumn races would be much easier too! 

I had entered the Reigate Half in 2017 at the ‘early bird’ price and it had always been my main aim this year once recovered from my injury; it had been useful to have a long term goal to focus on when I started back running in April. After my Caterham half disappointment my training needed to focus on building up the Sunday long runs (all after a fast paced Saturday parkrun) and also ensuring I tried to get one tempo or interval session in during the week. I was also determined to listen to my body, so if I felt too tired for one of the sessions, I would change it to something else, but make sure that I still got the miles under my belt. By the time the Reigate half came round on 16th September, I had managed 5 runs between 16 - 20 miles, and felt a lot more prepared than when I ran Caterham 2 months previously.

This was my first time running the Reigate half. The organisation was superb, and the communication, event village, baggage tent and parking was faultless. The course itself was all on closed roads, and I’d been warned it was quite hilly. In fact there were only really two hills - in the first mile and the last mile - but everything else was all slightly undulating; I never felt like I was on the flat at any point. My race plan was to go out at 4min/km (6:25/mile), and see how long I could keep that up. In the end I managed that pace for the first 8 miles, then started to slow, crossing the finish in 1:26:34. My whole run, however, had been slightly hampered by the hill in the first mile: going up it had been slow, so I had rocketed down it and that had made both my hamstrings sore, like a minor strain, which remained for the rest of the race. It probably didn’t slow me down much, but it certainly wasn’t nice to run with. Nevertheless, I was content with my time, and finished 1st in the V50 age category, which was an added bonus despite there being no age category prizes. You can view my race on Strava here.

After Reigate there were now five weeks until the Abingdon marathon. In the next two weeks my long runs consisted of a 16 miler with 12 miles at around marathon pace (4:13/km or 6:46/mile), and a 20 miler. The following week I decided to do a final tune-up race and entered the Sittingbourne Striders 10 mile road race. I had run this race in 2015 in a time of 64:30; you can read about that encounter here, which explains the course in detail. This year I was hoping to run a bit quicker and something in the 63 minute range. The weather was cool and conditions very good apart from a fairly stiff breeze in places, and this came to the fore midway through the race at the highest point of the circuit. I ran well, and, more importantly, enjoyed the race; I enjoy few races these days as I’m usually thinking of pace, splits and times rather than the event itself. The fact that I didn’t hit my goal time, but finished in 64:22 (which was a small PB) didn’t really bother me. Oh, and I was third too, and received a £10 Sweatshop voucher and a trophy for my troubles.

Now there were two weeks left before Abingdon, so I tried to do a mini taper, but failed really because I had put myself down for the Surrey League Cross Country the following Saturday, and ended up with a 41 mile week. So in the end it was more like a 1 week taper, with a half-hearted attempt at carb loading two days before the race. I examined the training I’d done over the past 17 weeks, and the mileage worked out at an average of 43 miles/week. Compared to 2015, when I finished the London marathon in a time of 3 hrs 06 minutes on an average 52 miles/week, and 2016 when I finished in 2 hrs and 58 minutes on an average of 57 miles/week, the training was certainly on the light side. Saying that, I’d got some good long runs in, and was sure that the warm weather training would be beneficial now the temperature had dropped. I was also weighing in at the lightest I had been for some time, which could only help. Realistically, I didn’t think I could get under 3 hours again, but thought I could be close, so my plan was to run the first 13.1 mile in 90 minutes and see how it went from there.

5:10am on Sunday and I’m up before my alarm goes off. I’d sorted out everything the night before, but it still took me the best part of an hour to eat and get ready, so soon after 6am I was in the car and away. I hadn’t been looking forward to the drive much, and it took me about 1 hour 45 minutes, taking it easy as it was dark and also foggy in places, with the outside temperature about 8 degrees - perfect running conditions though! Parking was in a local school, for which there were plenty of spaces, and the event all took place at the local sports arena, so everything (toilets, baggage, snacks and coffee, and space to warm up) were all close to hand. I spotted the local scouts were selling flapjacks for 50p, so bought some to add to my pre-race banana as I was already feeling peckish from my breakfast 2 hours previously. I stayed dressed until 15 minutes before the start, did one lap of the track just to get the legs moving, and settled in waiting for the starter.

Abingdon marathon is a marathon for serious marathon runners. You won’t find many charity fun-runners here. The only real reason to run it is because it is flat and fast, and the race was packed with lean racers who were certainly not new to this game, looking for that elusive PB that perhaps they had missed at the hottest London marathon earlier in the year. It was 18 months since I last raced the distance, and I was quite nervous whether I’d be able to complete it on the limited training I had done. When the hooter went, there was the usual excited racing off by some runners who forgot that it wasn’t a 5k, but I soon fell into my own pace and let these runners gradually come back to me. 

The route heads out to the east at first to Radley, onto a footpath through Radley lakes (covered in low mist) then back to the west, twisting through the narrow streets of Abingdon town, where we were greeted with some generous support. The route then headed south out of Abingdon, along the River Thames, until it turned sharply to the west again, just before 10k, for the first of two loops through the local villages, each loop approximately 14k. It then headed back towards Abingdon town again, through western part of the town before turning back to the finish at the athletics track.

My memory of races is usually vague, but there were some parts that stuck in my mind:

There was the heavily panting runner who was taking up the whole path through Radley lakes by running in the middle (it was easily two-abreast if you ran to the side). That slowed me down a bit, and I genuinely worried that he could safely run 10k let alone a marathon. 

There were the three runners who drafted behind me for many miles, using me as a slight windbreak against the breeze. I didn’t get annoyed because I was running my own race, but it would have been nice for them to have taken turns at the front. I dropped them both later in the race.

There was the point after about 5 miles when I said to myself “Why am I doing this? It all feels quite hard, and I could just stop and go home early”. That was a strange emotion so early on, and I think I was focusing too much on the remaining distance. I calmed down by telling myself it was just a long training run.

There was the lady runner who caught me somewhere around the 18 mile mark, and it urged me to concentrate on my pace, which must have been slowly dropping. I ran with her for a few miles before she gradually pulled away and finally finished a minute in front of me. 

I remember the joy at seeing the 20 mile marker, and knowing it was only 10k to go. If I could keep my pace up I would finish in a respectable time. Although I was starting to struggle to turn the legs over, it was only in the last 5k that my pace really started to slow. 

As you run through Abingdon town with only 3k to go, you have to negotiate a twisty underpass, and climbing up the short steep far side was torture!

Finishing on the athletics track with a fast 300m sprint where I overtook a few people, including the triathlon legend Annie Emmerson. It was a great conclusion to the race.

So how was my race overall (which you can view on Strava here)? Well, I passed half-way in just over 90 minutes, and proceeded to lose another 3 minutes over the second half. My 10k splits were 42:28, 43:05, 43:43 and 44:34, so no big collapse, just a gradual slowing, although I did get my pace back on track for the final 2.2k which I completed in 9:33. My finish time was 3:03:23, which is my second fastest marathon time, albeit 5 minutes slower than my PB. I placed 152 out of the 744 finished, of which the first 124 ran sub 3 hours. Now that is a quality field of marathon runners!

Would I recommend it? Absolutely - the results speak for themselves! The race has a capacity for 1200 and does sell out, so enter early. It usually opens in mid February and is full within 6 weeks. I got a medal and a t-shirt for my £43, as well as some very sore legs for a few days, followed by a nasty head cold as my immune system wasn’t up for keeping anything at bay!

Next race is the Brighton 10k in 3 weeks. I’ve not run a 10k this year yet due to my long time absence with injury, so it will be interesting to see if I can remember how to pace myself over that shorter distance. I’d like to aim for 38 minutes but I need to shift this cold first and get some speedwork in to see if I have any hope of that. Whatever the outcome, it’s great to be back running well again.

A/N: Back from Korea so I’m back on this, however it’s been really hard to write Chanyeol after being served food by his mom at her restaurant, I feel like filth, hahaha if she only knew what we are in about, she would of kicked me from her restaurant, 미안해요 찬열이 어머니

Summary: Excited! Baekhyun himself collecting you, that meant he asked for your address and took the effort in coming just to have a word with you, in private… 

“Good morning Baekhyun-ssi”

You said smiling back at him like never before, not that you had many opportunities to before, but you knew you were giving one of those smiles where he’d feel something. 

He walked to the passenger’s door and opened it for you, the shy thank you that followed gave you up, what kind unexpected dream were you living at the moment? You didn’t give it much thought and decided to show him that you had an interest in him, all relationships started like this anyway, it didn’t matter who showed it or said it first, he had the initiative to collect you, it had to mean something. 

“How are you ____?” 

“Never been better, what a surprise, I never thought that anyone would pick me up in a car like this, and… you! I mean I am very happy” 

“I’m glad, it will make easier what I came here to talk to you about” said Baekhyun holding onto the steering wheel to turn to you finally making that very long awaited eye contact. 

“I’m all ears” 

“Chanyeol” 

All your dreams crushed to the ground, as he elevated you to heaven you were met again with the cruel reality that he might be not intending to talk to you about anything that you wanted him to talk to you about.

“What about him?” 

“Listen, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt this time, it seems odd that after all these years we find you in the corporation, if coffee is the reason I can understand why Minseok hyung brought you, but I hope it’s nothing else” 

“Nothing else? What do you mean?” 

“Just so you know I have my eyes on you, I don’t trust Minseok hyung’s impulsive actions when it comes to coffee, I don’t trust Yixing hyung’s reaction when he saw you either because simply he’s just too good for this world” 

“Excuse me? What are you implying?” 

“You could be a spy for another company, and it’s nothing wrong if I take precautions, it’s this dirty business we do, keep safe before regret, is my rule in life” 

You unlocked the car and got out slamming the door behind you, of course Baekhyun followed you and you felt your wrist being grabbed spinning you around to face him. 

“I’m not finished” 

“And what makes you think you have the right to talk to me like this? How did you think I would just simply sit down and listen to all this bullshit?” 

“As I was saying… I wasn’t finished” he pressed harder on your wrist “Chanyeol which is the most important thing here” 

“What has Chanyeol-ssi have to do with all this?” 

“If you hurt him you will have to deal with me, and I won’t be this friendly, got the message sweetheart?” 

You pulled you wrist away “did you just threaten me?” 

“You don’t hurt him and you won’t have anything to fear, you hurt him… well actually yes, yes I think I am actually threatening you” 

“I will not go with you anywhere, I don’t want the job” 

“Oh yes you are coming becuase if you don’t Chanyeol will be upset” 

“So what if I decide accepting Chanyeol-ssi?” 

“That will make both him and I very happy, I have no problem in you treating him well and develop something nice between you 2, what makes my brother happy it makes me happy” 

“And if I don’t accept him?” 

“Do it in a way that he won’t be hurt, you know that kind of shit girls do to make us feel that we are not the one and it will never work and blah blah… just don’t use him to get what you want, and as I said before do not hurt him, apparently he’s still not over you and I can’t make that change” 

He pulled at your wrist and took you back to the car, he took the driver’s seat and drove off in silence, you didn’t add anything to this conversation, becuase despite how he was treating you, the poison that came out of his mouth, it was still Baekhyun, you truly just discovered now how weak you were towards him, not a very nice first conversation with him but he looked at your eyes and you looked at his, and the attachment to him was bigger than ever. 

You took this as challenge, you were going to show him that you weren’t a spy, that the trust Xiumin gave you was in it’s place, that Lay remembering you wasn’t just because he was an angel and nice to everybody, and that you weren’t going to play with Chanyeol becuase you simply weren’t the type, and last but not least your plan was making Baekhyun notice you, and maybe like you like his dearest friend. 

You didn’t look at him the whole ride, but admittedly you were watching him from the corner of your eye, your heartbeats ringing in your ears every time he changed gears you carefully memorised the look of his hands, couldn’t get away from the thought of them hands on yours, you’d like to carefully feel his palm over yours, they were mesmerising, beutiful was an understatement. 

You heard him hum a song not affected by your presence, he seemed happy, as if he got out of his chest something really heavy. 

“How did you find my address?” 

“I asked HR, we know everything about you, don’t worry yourself with things like this, you don’t need to fear me” 

“Who said I fear you? I was just curious” 

“And curious I was when you appeared in our lives again, I mean you have to admit that looks suspicious” 

“I am not a gold digger, if I was in would of went out with Chanyeol-ssi back then” 

“Back then you were young and naive” 

“Do you really beleive what you are saying? You really think I am here for what you think I am?” 

Baekhyun looked at you for a split second as he drove “no I don’t, it’s just like precautions, don’t take it to heart, I’m like this with everything and everyone” his voice sounding milder, less aggressive. 

You arrived at the corporation, he parked the car in the parking lot were you saw Xiumin arriving with both Luhan and Chen, also Kris arriving with Suho and Lay, Kai arriving with D.O and finally Sehun with Chanyeol and Tao. 

You sighed getting ready for another session of interrogations, weirdness, extreme kindness, extreme rudeness and cheekiness, you kind of knew who fitted in which category by now. 

They all went in except Chanyeol that saw you getting out from Baekhyun’s car, his smile ear to ear, very notifiable and cute with his hair brushed to the back. 

“____! Wow you look… you look fabulous, I won’t be able to concentrate at work from now on” 

“Good morning to you too Chanyeol-ah, I’m happy to see you also” said Baekhyun as Chanyeol waved at him disinterested. 

“Good morning Chanyeol-ssi” you said bowing. 

Chanyeol escorted you inside the building, you felt his hand on your back, he was shaking and he started to look like a highschool boy, a dumb and naive one, he was so cute. 

Baekhyun was left behind, you heard him scoff following you. The others had already taken the elevator up, you got into the next elevator with Chanyeol and Baekhyun. 

The awkward silence, all while Chanyeol eyed you head to toe shamelessly, Baekhyun cleared his throat several times but nothing, yes Chanyeol liked you… a lot, that much was the only certain thing at the moment.  

The ding of the elevator indicating you arrived was your saviour, this man made you sweat and somehow uncomfortable, of course it was nice to know that a guy like this liked you this much, but to experience it in a small locked place with your love interest as a witness was something you didn’t wish to your enemy. 

“Right oh, we are here” Baekhyun breaking the silence patting on Chanyeol’s back. 

Lay and Luhan were chatting just outside Suho’s office, when Lay saw you he stopped talking and raised his hand for a casual hi five, it made you laugh and you went with it. 

“Looking good! Business worthy ____” 

Oh but this comment made Chanyeol upset, he frowned and looked at you to see if you actually enjoyed the compliment, this was going to be hard, on one hand you had Baekhyun like a hawk watching you closely, on the other Chanyeol who was really into you and already had the feeling of jealousy and ownership, and… 

“My precious!!! There are some supplies in the small kitchenette at my office, please just do your thing, I need it” 

Xiumin, who made you feel like an object. 

You nodded and went to Xiumin’s office, and of course Chanyeol behind you. 

“I’ll help you with the tray, we are 12 after all, and you still don’t know how we like our coffee, some of us are more tea people, I’ll just give you a hand” 

And a hand he give you, he was way too handsy, culminated when you were dripping the coffee carefully concentrated, both his hands were at your shoulders from behind, he started massaging you skillfully, oh it was good.

“Chanyeol-ssi I don’t think this is appropriate” you moved yourself slowly turning to face him. 

“I know, you are right, I just thought of those long hours standing, I don’t know what got into me” 

“It’s alright, just please, I want to work and earn my money and go home without people thinking weird stuff” 

“Go out with me, as in a date, officially, in front of everyone, no one will talk shit” 

“Chany-” 

“Don’t refuse me again, OK that was premature, I shouldn’t of had, but now you know where we stand, I am not going to act around, I like you, I hope you consider this some day” 

“Consider what? Leave my girl alone Chanyeol-ah” Xiumin’s voice coming from the door frame were he stood, Chanyeol nodded shrugging his shoulders leaving you with Xiumin alone. 

“I’m sorry if he bothered you, don’t mind him, now give me my coffee, and I can show you around to explain my view” Xiumin took his cup and placed the tray with the other 11 drinks on a trolley, he opened the door to Suho’s office and let you in, the guys stopped talking for a moment watching you, then they approached the trolley each one knowing what to take. 

“Looking good today ___” said Kai winking at you. 

Chen also had that smirk decorating his pretty face, he stood there waiting till everyone finished taking their cups, finally he walked your way taking his own.

“Loving the service, I have a feeling that we will get along very well” he said way to close to your face, his breath hitting your face.

You gulped and looked away tugging your hair behind your ear, you looked at Baekhyun who witnessed the comment, you were hoping that he stood up for you, but he just brushed your gaze away, it was Chanyeol who you caught being annoyed, his fist gathered as his knuckles whitened. 

“Right, so let’s get going” said Xiumin placing his hand on the small of you back, Chanyeol joining behind you. 

“I’ll help hyung” 

“No, why would you?” 

“I’ll take care of this, I don’t have anything in my agenda, you won’t need to follow up on the project, I will execute it all from ㄱ to ㅎ” 

“Doesn’t sound all bad, I like this proposition, is it OK with you ___? I could use some help, business getting busy lately” 

You looked from Xiumin to Chanyeol who’s pupils dilated asking for your acceptance almost pouting like little boy. 

“Whatever you see fit Kim Minseok-ssi” 

“Yes!” whispered Chanyeol very happy.

You walked behind Xiumin who took you to an empty office, it’s walls all made out of glass, very visible to all other offices around, Xiumin’s office was the closest, being Suho’s the furthest, in between them was the shared office between Kai and Sehun, the Chinese squad shared one big office that was not very used as they followed up the business from China and just eventual visits were made, along the corridor the rest of the offices were aligned. 

“So this is what I was thinking of, we don’t need a franchise coffee shop done here, but I will pay for a dock just as fancy and even better than any coffee shop, you can chose the colours” 

“Hyung! If I may, the place is huge, how about we turn this into a real coffee shop, for all the employees, tables here, and a real kitchen, we could serve cakes and muffins, light food” 

“That’s a lot of money Chanyeol, I’m not sure we can profit” 

“I’ll go halfsies with you hyung, besides to earn money you need to invest properly”  

“If you put it that way… what do you think ___?” 

“In that case I’d need help, I don’t think I can take care of it by myself” 

“We’ll hire someone to help you and someone to clean, and I volunteer to help too because I don’t have any business at the moment” added Chanyeol.

“Chanyeol!” exclaimed Xiumin surprised. 

He was being adorable, like he didn’t mind at all, he was down to earth investing in something and someone like you, willing to help.

“Alright, I like it” you said smiling at them. 

You decided to loosen up and embrace the good treatment, Chanyeol was acting like a sweetheart and no one could argue about that.

And of course working closely with Chanyeol to get this project done automatically meant having Baekhyun involved, you tried being as professional as you could, not showing your obvious interest in him after the conversation that happened between both of you, but somehow Baekhyun’s reactions to your over nice comments your constant praising and the way you looked at him made you feel that he knew, because he made an effort to act extra formal when Chanyeol was around, he didn’t want to hurt his friend that didn’t notice anything, you wished he did at some point, perhaps Chanyeol would stop bringing you flowers every morning, or offer you to take you home everyday, stop the accidental ‘not accidental’ unnecessary skinship, you were living a real love triangle and it was killing you, you developed a soft spot for Chanyeol but you couldn’t like him back, and you were more in love with Baekhyun every single day that passed. 

You actually liked when Chanyeol was around to shoo away Kai and Chen that indeed were too playful for your liking, Kai was cute in his way of talking to you, but you knew it wasn’t innocent, also his bad reputation when it came to girls, you heard what kind of player he was, you didn’t blame him because getting trapped in Kai’s charms would be quite easy.

Chen in the other hand was more serious business, it felt almost like a challenge for him, as in ‘just another girl’ kind of deal, and when he didn’t receive from you what he wanted it was making him impatient almost upset, that is when you liked to hide or get close to Chanyeol the most, but that challenging gaze Chen gave you, you knew this was just the beginning.

Grand opening day, you were excited, Chanyeol was excited, even Baekhyun was excited, but no one as excited as Xiumin that was moaning in pleasure every time he sniffed at the coffee scent eyeing the new girl that would be helping you at the café, the attraction was mutual, Mun Saehyo was shy and very young, a bit overwhelmed with the affection receiving from Xiumin, in comparison to Chanyeol that was being a gentleman all along with you.

The first round of coffee served was going to be for the bosses, you prepared 8 very fancy cups of coffee, you knew exactly what everyone liked at this point, you skilfully placed each cup in front of everyone, Suho, Sehun, D.O and Xiumin who took it like a child being offered a lollipop, all while not breaking eye contact with Saehyo who was setting the cupcakes in the display counter, Kai who of course winked at you just when Chanyeol wasn’t looking, Chen who eyed you head to toe shamelessly, he didn’t really care whether Chanyeol saw or not, finally Baekhyun who gave you a smile that made you feel the happiest in the world, and Chanyeol who brought you back to reality when he brushed his fingers over yours, why was this being so difficult?

You took the tray and pressed it to your chest awaiting verdict, a lot satisfied noises could be appreciated, you looked at each and everyone nothing as satisfying as Xiumin’s face expression.

“Thanks ___, it all looks very nice, I guess you will keep us very happy, especially Minseok hyung” said Suho with a reassuring smile, just what you needed.

They all nodded and thanked you, when you walked back to your place you were stopped being pulled by your apron, it was Chen, wow the dude could play his eyebrows to his advantage, he just had that face expression that screamed trouble.

“Yes Kim Jongdae-ssi?”

“Hmmm, I guess you really know what we like”

“I hope I do, if you have any special request please let me know, you are the most important customers”

“No I am” exclaimed Xiumin.

“Well no I am, I was here all along and helped in everything” added Chanyeol with the cutest pout that made you smile.

“I hope I can be tho” said Chen before he slapped your ass taking everyone by surprise.

Chanyeol pushed his chair to the floor as he got up grabbing Chen by the scuff of his neck, he was almost lifting him from the ground, the difference in height noticeable, his angry veins making an appearance in his neck.

“I’m going to kill you Jongdae” growled Chanyeol between closed teeth.

Everyone got up trying to pull Chanyeol back from Chen, Saehyo was taken aback the view was very intimidating.

Nobody really could pull Chanyeol from Chen’s side except for Xiumin who clearly was the strongest, he pulled Chanyeol’s hands and gathered them at his back taking him away from Chen, who was laughing for making Chanyeol that angry, you followed Xiumin, Baekhyun and Sehun who took Chanyeol away, he was still wanting to go back to Chen and punch him in the face.

“Let me go hyung, no one touches ___, what the fuck he thinks he’s doing? Is it because he knows I like her? Why doesn’t he have self respect and leave other people’s-”

“That is not Chen’s style Chanyeol-ah and you know it, only Kai here is like that” said Xiumin calmly.

“Thanks, I guess I need to keep an eye on both?”

You patted on Chanyeol’s shoulder who instantly made him relax, his face was all red and flushed, little sweat droplets forming on his forehead.

“It’s alright Chanyeol-ssi, but I think I’d like to go home if that’s OK Minseok-ssi”

“Yes please, Baekhyun-ah take her home”

“I’m sorry ___” whispered Chanyeol.

You walked behind Baekhyun, he seemed upset for Chanyeol and you were confused whether to feel guilty or sorry for yourself.

You tried keeping up with his steps but he clearly didn’t want to walk along side with you, he reached his car and got in the driver’s seat waiting for you to join, when you got in the car he was breathing loudly looking at his window.

“I didn-”

“You know what? This never happened before, I am really starting to get annoyed, are you one of those women who likes the attention? What do you think you are doing?” he said getting close to you, his eyes poisonous.

“I didn’t do anything, Jongdae-ssi has been like this since day one”

“You heard Minseok hyung, it’s not his style, you must of done something to provoke him”

“That accusation is very nasty you know, I’ve been working my ass off for the past 2 months and I was right in front of you all this time, and you know I was not playing anyone, not even the guy that you know very well he likes me, because I am not like that, you should know better!”

“I should know better… so is it only me?” asked Baekhyun’s voice coming out sexier than what you could take.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You know what it means, don’t act dumb all of a sudden, we all know how intelligent you are” his voice going back to an aggressive tone.

You tried unlocking the car which of course was locked, he grabbed your shoulders and forced you to look at him after shaking you to stop moving.

“Answer me! Is it only me?” he asked again his voice low, his eyes inviting, Byun Baekhyun was asking you whether it was only him.

You melted, he felt how you trembled under his hands, you looked at each other for a long time, his face expression really wanting to hear it.

“I-it was always only you Baekhyun…”

Baekhyun drove back to the offices, he felt like real shit, he didn’t even want to question whether he was happy to hear such a confession so loud and clear, he felt like a traitor, he felt like he was worth nothing, not only he was part of the biggest investment company in the country formed by the very rich and powerful men, he was part of it because of Chanyeol, his mate, his pal, his buddy, his brother, the man that liked the girl that just confessed to him, he felt like shit because he got it out of her, he could of ignored it, but Baekhyun wanted to hear it, traitor, he just felt like a traitor and still didn’t know why he acted the way he did.

Baekhyun followed the loud voices coming out from Suho’s office, he knocked the door before stepping inside where they all were engaged into the heated conversation.

“I tell you she’s just like anyone else, she’s here for the money” said Chen.

Xiumin still holding Chanyeol in place with the help of Sehun, his eyes red and almost shooting fire.

“Shut up Chen! I warn you one more word and you will face consequences!” shouted Xiumin.

“I think hyung is right tho, they are all the same, I don’t think it’s the money, but any girl is accessible” added Kai calmly with a proud smirk “I am pretty sure I could get her”

“Stop it! What the fuck is wrong with all of you? I told you I like her and still are hurting me, you are all filth here, I have no real friends except for Baekhyun”

Shit… and now it’s when Baekhyun really felt like a ton of bricks fell over his shoulders.

“Not all women are like your mother Jongin-ah” said D.O almost whispering, not bothered by the whole conversation.

“Ouch hyung, however I beg to differ, they are all sluts like my mother” added Kai laughing.

“Man don’t say that about your mom, she’s pretty hot, she knows how to treat a man, I will never for-” Chen was cut off.

“Yah! Don’t bring that up, I’m trying to forget that you slept with her” Kai joked back.

“This conversation got way out of hand, I warn you all, no one messes with ___ because she’s here to work and that’s it” said Suho in an authoritative way “and if Chanyeol likes her it’s very low for you 2 to flirt with her”

“I haven’t yet hyung” said Kai.

“Me either, if I do she’d be already in my bed” added Chen.

This time it was too much to handle, Chanyeol set himself free from Xiumin’s and Sehun’s grip, he gathered his hand into a fist and went on Chen punching his jaw making him fall to the ground, he sat atop of him and when he was about to punch him again Baekhyun covered Chen with his body, earning the punch on his back.

Chanyeol stopped in panic “Baekhyun-ah, Baekhyun-ah, are you alright, I’m sorry, why did you just have to?”

“Stop it right now all of you! I warn you I’ll call Kris to come all the way from China to give you a round of kicks in you pretty asses if you don’t stop this nonsense!” shouted Suho.

Xiumin helped Chen up punching his shoulder reprimanding him for what he did.

“She’s not even worth all this shit, I propose a bet” said Chen as he stood up.

“Shut the fuck up yah” added Xiumin.

“No I am not kidding, leave me alone hyung” said Chen brushing Xiumin off “let’s make a bet” he said walking towards Chanyeol who was making sure Baekhyun wasn’t hurting.

“I think it’s enough for today hyung, don’t poke him anymore” Sehun said trying not allow Chen from getting any closer to Chanyeol.

Chen was cleaning the blood from his mouth looking at the tissue in disbelief “I bet you I can get her, if she is so decent and so worth it you won’t have anything to fear Chanyeol-ah”

“I think this is a good idea, I’m in” added Kai.

“Don’t listen to them it’s alright, let’s go home” whispered Baekhyun tapping on Chanyeol’s back.

Chanyeol’s nostrils flared before lifting his head meeting everyone’s eyes.

“I’m also in” he said taking Baekhyun by full surprise.

Hudson’s Journey

Hey all!!! It’s Andrea here.  I’m sure many of you are trying to figure out how to navigate this crazy change in our world.  Some of you have children at home and are trying to juggle “home schooling” amongst other things, like your own work, a new baby, a partner who has been laid off, etc.  This week our school board officially rolled out distance learning so this meant my husband Andy and I were going to implement more structure to the day.  I’m a teacher and he is off of work right now so this should be easy, right? 100% WRONG!!!!  Here’s a little story of our oldest who has been through a lot and battles with his emotions and abilities every day of his life. 

That cutie (ya ya I may be biased) in the picture above is Hudson. He will be 8 in June. Just before he turned 4 I took him to watch a baseball game and as we were walking beside 3rd base (outside of the diamond) a ball came hurdling across the field, hit the top of the fence and smacked Hudson right in the head. He dropped so fast and I was terrified. I will never forget the "clunk" sound; like a coconut cracking open. I was terrified but he was conscious and settled down after about 10 minutes. He was very clingy so we called EMS just to check him over and make sure he was ok. They came, did a quick assessment and left it up to me to decide if I wanted him to go to the hospital.  By that point he was acting himself so I figured I would just monitor him and if anything got worse I would take him to the ER. I did question why he didn't have a goose egg  (I always heard that no goose egg could be a bad sign, but the EMS responded with "ya that's weird." They pretty much made me feel like I wasted their time so off I sent them not wanting to be “that crazy mom.” As the day progressed Hudson went from playing hard outside to wanting to lie down every couple of hours. I thought it was the heat or that he didn't sleep great the night before.  That night I had him sleep with me and he was very restless. He kept waking up and saying that his head hurt a lot where he got hit but then he would go back to sleep.  The next morning he seemed pretty good other than not wanting breakfast (which isn't normal) because his tummy hurt  (which is normal for my dairy sensitive boy). He went to his first t-ball game (I know I know...what were we thinking taking him to play baseball) in the morning but came home and crashed hard on the couch. He was off and on all day and we questioned taking him to the ER but then he would get up and play like he was totally ok.  At 6 pm after noticing his entire left side of his head was swollen I decided to call Telehealth to get their opinion and they said to take him to the ER immediately.  They always say that so I still wasn't too worried. Hudson slept the whole car ride to Stratford General and when we arrived he was happy and hyper. The waiting room was so busy that I contemplated leaving. Hudson was putting on a show for all the other "patients" Re-enacting how he got hit in the head by the ball.  I definitely thought we would be sent home because he seemed totally fine.

We got called into a room before a lot of people who arrived before us. We didn't wait long before the doctor came in to do an assessment.  Right away the doctor felt the swelling and said it's a boggy hematoma meaning he has a break in his skull. I was shocked and terrified but the doctor assured me that most of the time its small and no big deal. It will heal on its own she said. She sent him for a CT scan and I was told I could be in the room to watch the images of his little skull and brain..or as Hudson says his "big" brain.  The first images started coming up and all of a sudden I was asked if I wanted water and taken out of the room. I instantly knew something was wrong but tried to wait calmly for Hudson to come out.  They had previously told me it would be about an hour before the radiologist looked over the scans but within 5 minutes the doctor came to see us.  The scans showed a significant break in his skull and a small bleed on the outside of his skull. I started imagining the worst and stupid scenes from Grey’s Anatomy started rushing through my head. I was so scared and upset but I knew I had to calm down so I could call Andy and give him the news.  The neuro team in London was going over the scans and transportation was being arranged to take us to Victoria University Hospital in London. Hudson in all of this was still happy and entertaining anyone who came to see him.  Before we left I was assured that Hudson would be fine  because we made it past the crucial first 24 hours. We spent 48 hrs in London for observation and had the greatest healthcare team supporting us throughout the entire ordeal. The next month we were on high alert and Hudson had a couple of seizures (which is common after a concussion). We spent the next year going for check ups every few months with the Neurologist in London. Everything went great so Hudson was released at the one year mark. We thought we were in the clear, but don't let that fool you, the paranoia of our kids getting hit in the head or falling and hitting their head is extremely high to this day. Ugh!

Fast forward to a year and a half ago when Hudson started grade 1. Since the "accident" Hudson's behaviour had definitely changed, he could barely remember anything that happened the day before, let alone a week before. He was super fidgety, always touching his face and wiggling around on chairs. We would ask him to do 3 things and he would forget everything we asked him after he walked away. We were often annoyed and frustrated and we were struggling with managing his "lazy-like" behaviour. I knew there was something else up but people kept assuring me he was acting like a “typical” boy.

After a couple of months in class I had a meeting with Hudson's teacher to discuss his progress and behaviour. I mentioned the head injury he had sustained and the thought of possible ADHD and she thought it might be a good idea to have him psychologically assessed. We went through the lengthy process of a psychological educational assessment and received a thorough analysis of him. Everything the psychologist explained made so much sense: low executive functioning skills, low average working memory, low average processing speed, extremely low visual perception and fine motor coordination, broadly average academic skills, high average oral skills and finally anxiety due to the need he feels to please everybody. It was a huge eye opener for Andy, but wasn't as surprising to me, being in the educational world has exposed me to a number of students with these exceptionalities. It did however make me feel like an ass for thinking my child was not listening and being a lazy jerk whenever I asked him to do a list of things (ie. get ready for school).

Since Hudson was 6 at the time of the assessment the psychologist would only provide a provisional diagnosis of ADHD as his brain is still developing as well as due to the uncertainty of the impact he might have from the brain injury. We spoke to a neurological psychologist about doing a neurological assessment but he said at Hudson's age the results and recommendations would be the same as his previous assessment so to just wait until his next assessment at 10 when he can better communicate his thoughts and feelings.

With the current assessment report we received we were able to get an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) created for Hudson at his school. This IEP will stay with him throughout his educational journey as it is needed. The staff at Hudson's school have been so amazingly supportive. They have been following his psych ed assessment recommendations which includes things like, more breaks, strategic seating (close proximity to teacher and good choice of friends), more time to complete work, chunking of work, more oral testing and no repetitive tasks if he already shows he can do something.

I wish I could say that knowing his limitations has made us better at parenting him but in all honesty it hasn't. Sure we check ourselves more but the frustration and annoyance is still there. Some days more than others. I have actually just put a reminder in my phone for the start of each month to re-read Hudsons psych ed assessment and Occupational Therapist report. Just reading it again to write this blog post reminded me of so many things I had forgotten and was treating Hudson unfairly with: "you just have to do 20 min of work...why can't you just do 20 min and then be done....if you spent all the time that you have been sulking typing you would be done by now...." and so on and so on. Sigh. It's a learning process for all of us and I just need to keep telling myself the way I tell him that practicing what is hard is the only way it will get easier. So I will practice my patience as I help him practice working through his challenges and in between we'll go play some sports because we're friggin’ awesome at that.

Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? 2018 Nanny Goat Race Report

This is a race I did not expect to PR at.  I have been training for Ironman Canada, now only 2 months away.  I did a half ironman at the beginning of the month and felt more than ready for that.  If anything I should have been doing 4 to 5 hour hilly bike rides at this point, not focusing on how far I can run.  Yet, I had done this race three times previously and knew the only expectation would be what I set for myself.  But before I get into how I surprised myself into my first sub 12 hour 50 miler, let’s first explain what exactly is a Nanny Goat 12 hour / 24 hour / 100 miler.  

 Nanny Goat is part of the Old Goat Race series of trail racing.  The races are very low key with all manner of skill level present.  This particular race is a great one for first time ultra runners.  You need to bring no crew, you have access to a porta potty every ½ mile and your gear every mile, plus you’re never alone for very long because the course is a 1 mile loop.  The course is a mix of hard packed dirt, soft dirt, grass, and just a little bit of asphalt. You can sign up for 12 hours or 24 hours and go for however many laps you want.  Some folks walk the entire thing and some run nonstop.  People camp out under the trees, in RVs on the ranch, or in one of the stalls in the barn, which is something that the course runs through.  For me, this is a real treat.  Yes, laps can be boring.  The monotony isn’t just mental, but physical, and some say that because of the flatness of the course (only 50’ per mile) that it is harder on the body than a hilly ultra (which allows for a variety of different muscles and tempos).  No, this is a treat because you get to see your friends on the course and your friends who come to support you.  They make the race worth doing.  

 The weather for Saturday was projected to be a high of 72 and overcast.  If ever there was a day for a PR, this would be it.  Not that I set out to run 50 miles, not in the bit. Honestly, I just wanted to go out and get around 50K and see what I felt like doing after that.  We all lined up in the “goat pen” for instructions before the race.  I noticed a couple wearing horse masks holding a bottle of fireball and asked if I could take a shot.  They said sure, so I did.  It would not be the last shot or drink I would have that day during the course. In what seemed like just a few minutes later the gate was opened and we all filed out to start the race.  I had it in my head that I would run 4 laps and walk 1 at least until noon.  Those first 4 hours went real quick.  I talked to a few different folks, mostly about triathlons (some were wearing gear, others tattoos) and my good friend Diana.  When I got to mile 20 I stopped to change shorts, socks and to stick roll. I was really, really glad that I stopped early to take care of some minor issues that could have turned worse. There’s a saying that if you don’t manage small things early they will become big things later in the race.  The compression shorts that I had changed into solved the issue of chafing (despite the lube before the race) and the clean socks made me realize how pervasive the dust from the course is.  No matter what I do at this race I ALWAYS get blisters. I’ve gone 26 hours without changing socks or shoes, I’ve done races with a dozen water crossings, and I’ve done races in really hot weather where I don’t worry about my feet.  Nanny Goat is not one of those courses.  After just 20 miles when I took off my shoes and socks I wasn’t surprised to see my feet were covered in dirt .  I could already see where I was forming blisters, so I cleaned my feet with wet wipes, dried them, and applied as much lube (something like Desitin for the parents reading) to my toes and put a fresh pair of toed socks back on.  

 By now there were more than muffins, chips, pretzels, and potatoes out.  They had veggie burgers, cheese burgers, tri tip steak, PB &J, and cheese quesadillas to pick from.  I grabbed small bites of each from that point forward.  Every time it was time for another walk lap I would grab what I could take with me and finish it while moving.  I also forced myself to keep drinking pickle juice (even though I hate, hate, hate dill pickles) and plenty of other fluids.  Occasionally I’d grab a small amount of Sprite or ginger ale. Overall, I felt like I was constantly snacking or drinking, if only a little bit here and there.  I remember my first Nanny Goat in 2014 how hard it became to eat after mile 40.  I felt that I successfully fueled throughout this race not knowing how this method would work, which is much different from a normal trail race where aid stations can be 5 to 10 miles apart depending on the distance.  Many people think running that far is all about cardio, but there is so much more to running ultras than just who is most efficient at converting oxygen into energy.  As I mentioned previously, managing the little things is far more important sometimes.

 Another key aspect of my strategy was to not over do my effort.  I wore my heart rate monitor and I consistently managed my intensity to stay in zone 3.  My average heart rate for the day was 135 bpm and my max HR was 156 bpm.  I spent 90% of the day in zone 3 or lower.  Now, I probably wouldn’t have been able to do this if it weren’t for the 1 mile walk breaks after ever 4th mile. Watching my heart rate proved more important than pace; however, I noticed that I had consistently been doing between and 11 and 12 minute pace per mile.  I noticed as the day wore on, more and more folks started taking longer and longer walk breaks, whereas I felt strong.  

 Somewhere past 1400 hours (6 hours of race time) my friend Freddy and his friend Amie showed up, which was nice because Diana and I had no one in our stall this year because so many of our friends had were off doing other races.  Freddy brought with him various costumes which he would randomly change into at times.  He would walk or run a lap or two with Diana or I, toss me a beer when I got thirsty, or they would just clap at times, which was enough.  My other “crew” came from the folks who were charged with controlling the parking lot entrance at the halfway point.  They had a dry erase board and wrote up encouraging and silly things to make us laugh.  After a while it became my own challenge to try to think of responses for them.  For example, early on they had a sign that said, “sit down and I will tell you a story.”  So I responded, “Is that the time your life got turned around, flipped upside down, and you had to go live in Bel Air?”  A few runners with me laughed at that.  Once they had a sign up that said, “Sing us a song” so I sang to the “I’m too sexy for my shirt” at which point they all laugh and cheered. As I got to mile 35 I told them I only had 15 laps left and almost every time after that they would ask what lap I was on and cheer and offer encouragement.  Honestly, they were the best supporters out there being complete strangers and all.  

 Around mile 40 I was surprised that I was still keeping to my 4 to 1 ratio of run/walk intervals. Usually at this point the heat, my feet, or my stomach had pushed me to walk much more.  Considering that I had done very little ultra training I was shocked that I was able to power through this much running after more than 8 hours of being on my feet.  Yet, I could feel my feet and legs taking a pounding.  I stopped to again take care of my feet and roll (massage) my quads, calves, and IT band.  The blisters that were starting to form at mile 20 were full blown at this point, yet they weren’t so bad that I couldn’t continue.  I went through the same routine again.  However, this time when I got up to start running again I was very sluggish to get going.  I ran to mile 44 even though I had planned to start lowering that ratio.  The idea of walking my final lap didn’t appeal to me. I caught up with my friend Diana and suddenly adopted her strategy of mixing up the run/walk segments for the next 5 miles.  Comparatively speaking, Diana’s legs seemed fresher, her power walk full of purpose, and I realized I could let her take the lead and get me to my goal.  It was suddenly as if a weight had been lifted because I no longer had to drive myself forward; instead just follow.  Not much time later and I realized I had the goal of sub 12 hours in the bag.  My legs didn’t feel any better, but I realized that I was close to my limits of endurance for the day.  50 miles (or more) is a distance I’ve done three times previously, and yet stopping while I still had gas in the tank (and not pushing to 62 miles) seemed like a really smart idea.  Overtraining is something I have dealt with too often.  Thus, at 11 hours and 45 minutes I informed the Race Director and the timing folks that I was done, despite being signed up for 24 hours.  

 I have to say it felt really good achieving this distance in this time.  There are a few races out there where in order to get a finisher’s medal (not a participation medal!) you have to do it in less than 12 hours. Then again, many 50 milers go up to 15 hours depending on the difficulty, but for me this was a goal that has eluded me since the first time I tried it for one reason or another.  As usual, the credit cannot go to me alone. My friends and really all the folks out there supporting very much helped.  Sometimes it was a simple, “you’re doing great” or a high five. Other times it was listening to my bad jokes and cracking a smile.  I’m sure I’ll be back next year.  This time with a 100K on my mind.
