DURGA MADHAV Jagannatha’s famous chariot festival or Gundicha yatra is renowned the world over . But not many are aware of a secretive esoteric tradition in this ancient temple where Jagannath goes out on yet another yatra called the gupta gundicha yatra or the secret journey . But this time he is without his brother Balarama or sister Subhadra . Accompanying him instead is Mahishasuramardini Durga ! And two of them together is affectionately hailed as Durga Madhav by inhabitants of Odissa . Sounds strange ? No wonder why it is called the secret journey ! The famous pilgrimage site of Neelachal Puri is fabled to be originally occupied by goddess Vimala . Even today her temple stands inside the premises of the main temple . Vimala khsetra is one of the 51 ‘peethas’ or places where body of Sati fell on earth after Daksha Yajna . Vimala agreed to share her territory with Jagannath when he later arrived , but only on the condition that all the food that has been offered to him must also be offered to her . Even today Jagannatha’s prasada becomes “maha-prasada” only after it is ritually offered to Vimala . And in her honour two goats are still sacrificed in her temple on the day of Durgastami , in what is otherwise a bastion of vaishnava cult ! Every sati peetha is guarded by a bhairava who also becomes the companion of the presiding goddess . Interestingly , in shri khestra puri , Vimala’s bhairava is none other than Jagannath himself ! So it is no wonder that jagannath along with his Shakti yogamaya in form of mahishasuramardini goes out on this secretive journey ! Gupta gundicha yatra begins in Krishna paksha Dwitiya tithi and continues throughout the nine nights of Navaratri till Vijaya dashami . For the first nine days, the deities are taken in palanquin to the temple of Vimala which in within the premises of the main temple . From pratipad , Vama marga puja ( left handed tantric puja ) commences in Vimala temple . From this time till Vijaya Dashami the deities are taken outside the temple complex to Narayani temple . However , in this journey there is no chariot and the deities are taken in small palanquin instead . For millions of Oriya people Durga Madhav is a household name and a worshipable must during grihapravesha ceremonies . Many houses have a painting of Durga Madhav painted over the entrance or on the walls . Shri Jeeva Goswami Pad writes about the nonduality of Krishna and Durga in the famous sloka - One who is Krishna is Durga and Durga is Krishna . One who differentiates cannot see the truth ----- " Yah krishna sa-iva durga syat yaa durga krishna eva sah. anayorantaradarshi samsaronno vimuchyate " . It is no wonder that Shakti with the Shaktiman … Narayana along with Narayani embarks on this divine journey during the auspicious sharad navaratri to bless the devotees and erase all differences of thought , sect and animosity ! GOLU

Golu or Kolu is the display of dolls during Navratri. It is celebrated in most of the states of Southern part of India. It is called as ‘Gombe Habba ‘ in Karnataka and ‘Bomma Koluvu’ in Telengana and Andhra Pradesh.

Navaratri preparations start by setting up the steps, decorating the homes and temples, and lighting the streets. The nine days of Navaratri start the next day and end on the tenth, which is called Vijayadasami (day of victory).

Golu displays the dolls. It is kept in a traditional way, usually the top steps contain the idols of God and a kalash filled with water, covered with a coconut and mango leaves. Next few steps contains dolls of saints and heroes of country, common man doing normal activities. Business is usually represented by the Chettiar set of dolls, with shop items and wooden dolls called Marapachi dressed in colorful clothes. Nowadays Golu has a theme every year. Collection of dolls is increased every year.

Womenfolk dress up nicely and go for haldi kumkum during Golu. Prasad is prepared both times and bhog is offered to Goddess Durga. It is a wonderful time for the family.

Lalita Sahasranamam and Aigiri Nandini Mahishasura Mardini sloka, Shri Suktam, Devi Mahatmaya, Durga Saptashati is chanted during this festival. Ladies visit each other’s house in groups to chant Lalita Sahasranamam. This year we are missing all this due to COVID-19. Usually ladies wear the colour of the day saree or dress and go for chanting of Lalita Sahasranamam. They chant and after that they are served with Prasad and haldi kumkum with betal leaves, small comb, mirror and a gift is usually given to all ladies who come for chanting.

This year due to COVID-19 we missed all this but could get a glimpse of Golu in Facebook. Thanks to advancement of technology, nowadays competitions are organized and lot of enthusiastic people participate in the contest of Golu. They can show the dolls globally.
