The very mention of their names immediately brings to our mind the evergreen super-hit song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’ from the film ANDAZ. From the opening prelude to the yodelling to the fast-paced beats – everything about the song became unforgettable! Added to that superstar Rajesh Khanna’s charismatic screen presence turned this song not only into one of the most loved songs of Hindi cinema but also became one of the biggest hits of the careers of  Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar and Shankar-Jaikishen.

ANDAZ (1971): ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’

Shankar-Jaikishen (SJ): The music director duo who revolutionized the very definition of Hindi film music with their path-breaking music and tunes…

Kishore Kumar: The genius actor-singer who created his own path and carved a place in the Hindi film music scene which people cannot even dream of achieving…  

Both the singer as well as the music director duo reached dizzying heights of popularity during the years they were active. And yet when we look back it is sad that three of the most loved and cherished musical geniuses of our industry hardly got much opportunity to work together during their long and illustrious careers …

Interestingly they even made their debut around the same time –

Shankar-Jaikishen’s debut film as independent music directors was R K Films’ Barsaat which released in 1949…

Kishore Kumar’s debut film as an actor and a playback singer (sang for Dev Anand) was Ziddi which released in 1948…

Shankar Jaikishen somehow always worked with heroes like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Biswajit, Joy Mukjerjee, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt for whom Kishore Kumar never got the opportunity to playback. When they worked for Dev Anand they used Mohammed Rafi except for one instance-‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayee…’ a Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet that turned out to be the biggest hit of the film:

DUNIYA (1968): ‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayi…’

It was around the late forties that the triumvirate of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar entered the industry, became great stars creating a special niche for themselves and also had their own favourite playback singers singing for them. While Rafi became the voice of Dilip Kumar with Talat Mehmood also contributing in some songs, Mukesh was the voice of Raj Kapoor with Manna Dey singing for him at times. In case of Dev Anand, both Rafi and Kishore Kumar’s voices were used.and hence Kishore Kumar between 1948 and 1968 sang only for himself when he acted or did playback for Dev Anand.

NEW DELHI, KROREPATI, BEGUNAAH, RANGOLI and SHARARAT are the five films for which Shankar-Jaikishen worked with Kishore Kumar where he acted and sang his own songs and what beautiful music they created:

Interestingly both the above song and ‘Zindagi ek safar…’ from ANDAZ had other singers singing their version but really do people even remember that? For when Kishore Kumar sings, such is the magic and resonance in his voice that the other versions pale in comparison.

While Kishore Kumar enjoyed immense popularity as an actor-singer during the fifties and early sixties, he had to undergo a long period of struggle to be considered as a playback singer for other heroes. In fact there are rare instances when other singers like Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey sang for him.

SHARARAT (1957): ‘Hum matwaale naujawan…’

After giving him such a wonderful solo, wonder why did Shankar-Jaikishen settle for Rafi to sing ‘Ajab hai dastaan meri yeh zindagi…’!!! What made them think that Kishore would not have delivered that song brilliantly in his own way?

To achieve his dream of becoming a playback singer, Kishore Kumar had to become an actor and act for almost 20 years before giving up acting to become full-fledged singer. This phase coincided with the coming of a new star Rajesh Khanna in the horizon and Kishore Kumar became a voice to reckon with for all the actors after 1968.

In 1968 Shankar-Jaikishen gave music in the Dharmendra-Hema Malini starrer TUM HASEEN MAIN JAWAAN. Kishore Kumar got to sing only one song and that too a comical one in the film- ‘Munne ki amma yeh to bata…’. The song did become popular with the masses:

THE FATEFUL YEAR OF 1971:

This year was important for this combination in more ways than one. Not only did they team up to give several super-hits unfortunately, it was also the last year they worked as a team together  for Jaikishen from the duo passed away due to cirrhosis of liver.

Apart from the blockbuster song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’, the Kishore-SJ combo gave us some of these superb songs also in 1971 :

This film which launched Raj Kapoor’s son Randhir Kapoor had superb music by Shankar Jaikishen and Kishore Kumar became Randhir’s voice and all songs were super-hit. There were two more lovely duets in the film- ‘Tik tik tik tik…,’ ‘Jab hum honge saath saal ke…’

NAGINA: ‘Tere mere pyar ka andaz hai nirala…’

MAIN SUNDAR HOON: ‘Mujhko thand lag rahi hai mujhse door tu naja…’

The song ‘Naach meri jaan…’ from the same film had Kishore Kumar and Jaikishen making a brief appearance at the beginning of the song…

SEEMA: ‘Waqt thoda sa abhi kuch aur guzar jaane de…’

First in 1966, lyricist Shailendra passed away. On Septemnber 12, 1971, Jaikishen passed away. The team of SJ was hit very badly. Though Shankar did try to keep the flag flying by continuing to compose under the name of Shankar-Jaikishen as per their agreement, but the magic had started fading away.

POST 1971:

Films like JANGAL MEIN MANGAL, AANKHON AANKHON MEIN and DIL DAULAT DUNIYA released in 1972. Probably the music for some of the songs had already been scored by the two together and kept in their music bank. Here are some brilliant songs from these films:

Woh issi liye desh se bhaag raha tha taake Vicky ka haath na lage woh aur maamla ko thanda hone ke baad ya Vicky ke pakre jaane ke baad wapas ata. Ussko apne ACP chacha par bahot bharossa tha ke Vicky pakra jaega aur jail ho jaega ussko aur khud bilkool bach jaega, aur woh apne chacha ke kehne par hi desh se bahar jaa raha tha.

Ab Vicky ke plan aur sab kuch karne ke ilawa uss taraf ACP aur MLA log bhi aapas mein milkar batein kiya karte the ke kia ho raha hai, kia Vicky hi ne unn donon ko mara jab ke un logon ko pata tha ke weh donon Vicky ke saathi the. Khan nahin chahta tha ke woh usske saamne ussko goli maare ya ussko kuch bhi kare….. yeh Khan ke liye gawara nahin tha, aur socha ke ek police officer ka kaam hota hai logon ko bachana aur naa ke kissi se marwana…Khan ke ragon mein imaandari ka khoon dawd raha tha aur reh reh kar usski zameer ussko koss raha tha ke woh ghalat kar raha hai… kabhi kabhi soch raha tha ke Jugdish ko police station lejaye woh…magar jab ACP aur MLA ko sochta to apne irade ko badal deta tha… ekaat baar usske dimaagh mein kashmakash lagi rehti apne antar aatma se ladte huwe… soch raha tha ke khud se aur apne naukri se ghadaari kar raha hai….. Magar phir bhi Vicky ke plan ke motabik chal kar dekhna chahta tha ke ussko chain milta hai ke nahin……

Khan ne Vicky ko rokte huwe usske aur Jugdish ke beech kaha,

“Vicky zara baahar chalo ek baat kehna hai tumko.”

Aur ussne Vicky ko baahar lejaakar kaha,

“Dekho Sir, aap bade aadmi ho, aap ke paas paisa hai, rutba hai, popular ho. Main thehra ek mamooli Inspector, pariwaar wala, bahot mushkil se izat ki zindagi jee raha hoon halaan ke brasht logon ke bech reh kar saamna to kar raha hoon….aap apne paison ke sahare bach sakte ho magar mera imaan mujhko rok raha hai, reh reh kar meri aatma mujhko dhitkaar rahi hai, lagta hai main kuch ghalat kar raha hoon…aap ka plan sahi hai sab thik ho sakta hai magar usske baad kia sahab? Zindagi bhar mujhko meri zameer kosta rahega ke main ne ek ghalat tarike se iss kaam ko anjaam diya. Main apne zameer se to nahin bhaag paunga Vicky Sir ji, aap to bach jaoge magar mujhko to zindagi bhar iss bojh ko lekar zinda rehna padega, shaayad humko aap ke plan ko badal kar kuch aur karna chahiye!!”

Vicky ko ghussa aya aur kaha,

“Main issi liye aap se na milna na kaam karna chah raha tha. Main akele iss kaam ko anjaam de sakta tha magar aap khud aaye the mujh se milne aur mera saath dene ka wada kiya tha ab kia? Aap ke zameer kahan se beech mein agaya? Gunah karne wale ko saza dena aap ko thik nahin lagta? Aap police walon ka yehi problem hai Khan sahab. Jo imaandaar hote hai kuch ziada hi imaandaar hote hein aur jo brasht hote hein weh to brashtachaar ke samundar mein terte hein aur aap jeise imaandaar police wale unn ke peyron ke niche kuchle jaate ho phir bhi imaandaari ka daaman nahin chorna chahte….. kamaal hai yaaar!!”

Khan sar jhukaaye sharminda mehsoos kar raha tha, aur dhire se kaha,

“Mera dil iss kaam ko anjaam dene ke liye nahin maan raha Sir main kia karun? Aap hi batao, yeh jhoot hoga nah? Main keise ek bekasoor ko aap ki banaye huwe jaal mein ulajhne doon? Kia karun meri samajh mein nahin araha hai?”

Vicky ne Khan ka haath pakar kar ussko khinchte huwe andar wapas legaya aur Jugdish ke saamne khada karke zor se chilla kar kaha,

“Yeh kutta bekasur lagta hai aapko? Iss ne meri masoom behen ki balantkaar kiya mere enkhon ke saamne mujhko bandh kar yeh bekasur lagta hai aap ko? Main till till marta raha uss raat ko aur kuch nahin kar paaya apni maasoom, naazuk behen ke liye aur yeh masoom lagta hai aap ko? Bebus, laachaar tha main Khan sahab, uss waqt kahan thi aap ki zameer? Kahan the aap uss waqt kyun nahin bachaya meri behen ko tab? ………..” Vicky ke enkhon se ensoo behne lage aur chillate huwe woh Khan se sawaal par sawaal kiye jaa raha tha…aur Vicky rote huwe, apne danton ko peeste huwe apna bayaan jaari rakha….. “Meri pyari Sanjana roti rahi, chillati rahi aur main sab dekhta raha yeh kutta apne 5 saathiyon ke saath milkar usski boti boti nochte rahe aur main apni behen ka raksha nahin kar saka, sab mere enkhon ke saamne ho raha tha aur main majboor, ek pinjhre main quaid jaanwar ki tarah tha uss waqt aur yeh kutta hanss hanss ka mazaa lete huwe mere jale par namak chirak raha tha, yeh aap ko bekasur lagta hai Khan sahab? Mujhe to aap ko bhi goli maar dena chahiye ab!!”

Aur Vicky ne apni revolver nikala aur Khan ko aim kiya josh mein aakar phir jaldi se Rathod ne akar Vicky ko sambhala, usske revolver se tanne haath ko niche kiya aur Vicky tut pada, baith kar zoron se rone laga Rathod ke baahon mein inn lavzon ko bilagti awaaz mein kehte huwe, “Meri pyari Sanjana roz mere sapnon mein aati hai usski masoom chehre se aur bachpan ki awaaz mein mujhse sawaal karti hai, ke bhaiya tum ne kyun mujhe nahin bachaya, tum ne kyun mera raksha nahin kiya…aur har raat ko main chohunk kar jaagtaa hoon, chain o sukoon kho chukka hoon main hi jaanta hoon ke keise jee raha hoon… Uss raat wali ek ek pal aaj bhi taazaa hai mere zehen mein, mere enkhon ke saamne aaj bhi sab nazar ata hai jeise kal hi sab huwa ho….. mujhko chain nahin hai ab tak….. apna sukoon kho chukka hoon…main ne to kabhi kissi ka bura nahin chaha tha, main ne to kabhi kissi ka kuch nahin bigara tha, Sanjana ne to kissi ka bura nahin kiya tha, hum to hazaaron logon ka bhala karte rehte the aaye din….to phir hamare saath yeh sab kyun huwa, kyun huwa yeh sab? ……”
