Despite the chaos, mobile data services continued to function, allowing some users to fall back on VoIP apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to make calls via the internet.

Social Media Erupts with Complaints

Within minutes of the disruption, social media was flooded with messages from distressed users who were unable to place important calls. Many tagged @airtelindia and @Airtel_Presence, demanding updates and explanations. The lack of real-time communication from Airtel initially escalated customer frustration, with many calling for better transparency during technical downtimes.

Airtel Acknowledges the Issue

Eventually, Airtel issued an official statement acknowledging the outage. A spokesperson told The Hindu:

“We regret to inform that Airtel is currently facing a temporary network disruption in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Our technical teams are diligently working to address the issue and restore services as quickly as possible.”

The telecom giant clarified that the problem was localized and did not affect all users.

By the morning of May 14, Downdetector showed that reports of the outage had significantly dropped, indicating that services were back to normal. Voice calling functionality had been restored, and user complaints had subsided across social media.
