I really like Mass Effect: Andromeda
So I picked up Mass Effect: Andromeda about two weeks ago and proceeded to poor over 80 hours into one playthrough.  So yeah, I really liked it.  Which got me thinking why I really like it and why it has such a bad rep.  Andromeda came out over two years ago now and I understand when it launched there were actual game play problems.  Broken quests, deleted saves and crashing games are not acceptable launch conditions and I am not here to defend that in any way.  But! Many reviewers as well as the parts of the fandom (hard to tell how much) seem to really dislike the story and characters of the game.  I’m here to talk about why I love them and really hope there is a sequel.
The characters are all consistent with the theme of new beginnings, both in terms of place but also identity.  Specifically the shedding of stereotypes.  Suvi (I romanced her and she’s such a cutie) is a scientist that is spiritual.  Clear stereotype breaking.  Drack is a 1400 year old Krogan that has seen the worst of Krogan and the worst done to the Krogan and while he will fight he is smarter than a lot of his younger fellows because he realizes peace and cooperation are the path forward, something he obviously imbued in Kesh.  Vetra a Turian that’s not super militaristic, cares for those outside the social hierarchy and is obviously very diplomatic given her many connections. Not something Turians are known for more of an Asari trait.  Which brings me to Peebee.  The least Asari Asari we’ve met in the Mass Effect universe.  Yes she’s in her maiden stage but we haven’t seen an Asari act so rashly before.  Liara was about the same age as Peebee in the original Mass Effect but she was shy and not outgoing.  Peebee disparages long term thinking and planning opposite of most Asari interacted with across all the games.  Kallo directly tells you he rejected his cushy job in order to explore.  Gil a man that is always joking, surprisingly good poker wants to have a child.  In most stories this type of character would never approach parenting expect when joking.  Cora a human biotic that spent years with Asari commandos would seem like the Miranda type character to conflict with the player character’s leadership but instead she immediately trusts Ryder and offers her support.  Liam, ah Liam.  It seems like he might be the most disliked squad mate in the game.  I think this comes from his genuine and unfaltering optimism in the Initiative.  Let’s be honest a lot of people these days are cynical and perhaps for good reason and when confronted with optimism tend to scorn it.  And I’ll admit Liam was annoying at the beginning but by the half way point his antics with Jaal and his optimism made me smile.  Jaal is probably the hardest to fit into this dynamic since it is his home but he does end up embracing the Pathfinder and the crew as another family for himself.  Lexi’s played by Natalie Dormer so obviously she’s great.  The game also shows the damage stereotypes can do.  Most notably in Tann’s rejection of the Krogan and the Roekaar’s lumping of the Initiative with the Kett.
Speaking of the Kett, I think they have the potential to be a much more interesting villain than the Reapers.  Now, I love the original trilogy and the Reapers and I think I might be the only person who liked Mass Effect 3′s ending pre-extended cut. (Liked the extended cut too)  The idea of an AI taking its programming to a logical extreme is something we have to start worrying about in the real world but it does limit story options.  The Kett on the other hand are a biological enemy made up of individuals which means there is room for lots of growth.  I think the reason people saw the Kett as one-dimensional is because they are by design.  The Kett encountered in the game are only military expedition personal, we meet no civilians, no politicians, no one but military.  All those other types are hinted at in codex entries and logs but not a lot is revealed.  The potential for the Kett to be an interesting and nuanced factor in future games is 100% there.
There is also so much potential for future conflicts within the Initiative, with the Exiles, with the Krogan Colony and with the Angara.  Not to mention the Jardaan are probably still out there and the mystery of who unleashed the Scourge on them remains.  The Ryder family’s own drama around their mother is also quite compelling.  As well as the knowledge of the Reaper attack that the Pathfinder has now.
I could write about a lot more and maybe I will another time.  I think the touching on colonization and indigenous reaction is fascinating and could be discussed at length and dived into deeper in future games.  I know people were let down by the buggy launch and the graphics problems (I personally don’t care about graphics but I know many people do).  But Andromeda is a solid game with great combat, an interesting story and good characters.  I hope Bioware continues the story and that they address the very real failures of the first game.

First Mass Effect: Andromda impressions, now that I’m sixteen hours in and not going to play again until tomorrow (thanks, Panic! At the Disco!  Makes for a great week).
Potential spoilers under the cut!
- The facial animations are...not great, but it’s not really detracting from the game.  Kind of horrifying when someone tries to grin but it’s not so hard to get over.  Graphics are okay, but I don’t like close-ups on human faces because they’re...blotchy.  I foresee playing in 4k making a difference, but I didn’t plan ahead far enough to get the PS4 Pro.
-  The game definitely reminds me of ME1.  At first, this was kind of annoying, but it’s starting to grow on me because now I’m seeing the resemblance to the way the worlds in Inquisition were laid out.  There’s just so much world, too, but the fetch quests aren’t quite as grating as Inquisition.  It’s less gathering items to give to someone and more...hey, there’s a shield over there.  Go look at it.  You looked at it?  Great.  Quest over.
-  I have a mission called ‘kicking rocks for science’.  It was given to me by a Turian scientist who asked me if I wanted to kick rocks for science.  I love it.  I’ve only kicked two rocks for science.
- I love Gil.  My love for Gil grows more and more with each passing interaction.  He did randomly ask me if I want to have kids someday and I can’t romance him, but he’s great and he’s officially my friend.  He beat me in poker because I was honorable and didn’t cheat but if we play again I’m taking him down.
- Gil is afraid of Jaal because Jaal is the best poker player on the ship, next to him.
-  I might have to fight Peebee for Jaal, ‘cause I get the feeling we’re both down with the squid-cat-man and he’s already told me how he enjoys flirting with me and he has also agreed to get to know me better.  I love it, I love him, but I would fuck my way through all of Aya if I thought our thing wasn’t gonna work out.  Something about the squid-cat-man.  Pretty eyes, very pretty eyes.
-  Cora annoys me.  I hate to say it, but Cora sucks so far.  I am a huge fan of overpowered women and people being with groups they wouldn’t have been in if they weren’t overpowered/super-competent, but every other fucking word out of her mouth is ‘oh, it’s so hard to be so overpowered’ or ‘everyone called me a freak growing up’ or ‘asari this asari that huntress commando blah blah’.  I am cautiously optimistic that she’ll grow on me, when she moves beyond this, and I know she’s not happy that my dad picked me to be Pathfinder instead of her.  That’s fair, I get it.  It just feels like she’s trying to prove how much more qualified she is, until she breaks out the line that she’s always had a plan to follow.  It’s never ‘here’s what I would do’, it’s always ‘what would your dad/the Asari do’.  She wants to be leader but I think she’s better suited to being pointed in a direction and told to fuck shit up.  As long as it’s a tactically sound command, anyway.
-  I got to tell someone I was going to fuck their shit up.  Verbatim.  Loved it.
-  I have a lot of Cora thoughts.  I wanted to like her so badly, and I do understand what I’ve seen of her character so far.  Grew up feeling like a freak, always different, taken on this grand adventure where her mentor immediately dies and instead of taking the crown it’s handed off to someone she sees as significantly less likely to get shit done--but I can only see her faltering if she were actually made Pathfinder, like she’d always be second-guessing herself.  Kaidan had a similar background - crazy strong, grew up feeling like a freak, had a lot of tragedy in his early life because of his biotics, but his self-assurance makes all the difference.
-  Maybe there should’ve been a designated chain of command instead of my dad going ‘here put this AI in your head everything will be fine’.  I watched RvB - it was not fine.  None of it was fine.  A chain of command would have fixed half my problems with Cora if she never had expectations of taking the helm.  Unless, of course, the chain of command went dad > Cora and she is rightfully pissed off that my piece of shit dad was like lol nvm.  As far as I can tell, it was only implied that she might be Pathfinder if anything happened to him, but I’m not 100% sure.  I am only sixteen hours in.
-  You know who I actually outright hate in this game?  Foster Addison.  Holy shit, Foster Addison sucks.  “I’m not your new mother” what the fuck does that mean you piece of shit?  I don’t want you to be my new mother!  Wtf.  I hate her.  Cora is an angel compared to Foster Addison.
-  Maybe Cora doesn’t suck.  Maybe I think she sucks because she’s bitter about shit and she’s handling it the same way I do in rl, by complaining.  I don’t know.  This is either bad writing or it’s too early in the game for her to really move on from that disappointment.  As my Ryder, though, I’d probably throw her out the airlock because I can only assume I loved my dad and hearing her go on and on about ‘what would your dad do’ has to get grating.  Like, dad’s dead, bro’s in a coma, I talked to bro once and he’s kind of upset that he’s in a coma and dad’s dead and our golden world was actually a shit world.  I got things going on in my life too.  I’ll have to contemplate Cora more; it says something, in a way, that she’s the one I’ve put the most thought into so far.
- My roommate’s playing m!Ryder to my f!Ryder.  Apparently he has webbed toes, but only a few, and I had wisdom teeth but he doesn’t.
- Jaal is the most critical of my driving, but he’s very gentle about it.  It still hurts my feelings.  I’m assuming my Ryder never took so much as a Driver’s Ed class because jesus fucking christ.
- I tried to screech into a Kett encampment in the Nomad to run a few over before shootin’ ‘em dead.  The encampment was on a cliff and I was going too fast.  I didn’t hit any of them before promptly flinging the Nomad over the cliff.  It was not dignified.
So far?  I like the game a lot; the story is interesting and I’m constantly unsure of what decisions to make because I don’t know how it’ll impact the future; having this uncertainty is great, though, because I miss my actions having consequences.  I also like that I am consistently referred to as an alien by the Angarans because, yeah, we’re definitely the outsiders here.  Interesting to see how that unfolds.
I’m actually kind of bummed I can’t play again until tomorrow/that I had to stop early last night, but I get to see Panic! At the Disco and it’s going to be worth it.

readmore cause i just wrapped up mass effect andromeda and here are my very short messy thoughts on it
helluva game
liked it more than inquisition that’s for sure
for the fact that they decided to move the whole plot to a whole new galaxy/cluster, they could’ve done even more re: world building
the amount of unanswered questions just means more games... sigh i get it, but i really wanted to know more abt jardaan/scourge/kett etc.. well fine not so much the kett, they’re ethically jarring but p boring as far as big baddies go, but the devs can blame themselves for this, like, i don’t think you can go better cooler more massive villain than reapers tbh
the angara are awesome tho
i was actually totes ok with the gameplay! first mass effect game where i’m actually tempted to up the difficulty in a future playthrough
the questing was ok, at the end of this i can say that the sidequest amount was... appropriate. i didn’t mind it
fighting wise it was hella. the moment  found out the game had a black widow sniper rifle i was set for life
haven’t tried multiplayer, might tho
also this is the first bioware game that tears me apart re: chars and romances
i ended up going for jaal but i want to also vetra and reyes and possibly also peebee and maybe even liam??? man i don’t know there are so many adorable characters
the banter on the ship is AMAZING the banter while traveling is AMAZING the ship logs are AMAZING the non quest emails are AMAZING like, all the mini interactions between characters are fucking perfect ok, i love the shit out of the writing for this game, i love the fact that ryder never really goes full commander shepard levels of professional and unyielding but at the same time??? the epilogue of ryder wanting to walk out of the party? no one wants to party w their boss around?????? how she looked back at her crew??? with a smile??? i fucking started crying man, that’s the shit i live for
on that note the movie quest -  so. worth. it.
what else... storyline progression all ok, i ended up loving sam even more than i did the concept of him, love the idea of ai/human integration ok i just love ai period (like, i’m gonna get the new s8 form samsung just cause it’ll have its own ai named bixby like bruh, i live for this shit) sams attempts at jokes were hilarious!!!
i am very dissappointed in your sibling ryder role in the game tho like... i get it, but when the game was still in development, devs said sibling ryder will be up to their own shit while u do the pathfinding and i kind got the idea that that meant yknow... they got their own ship, and exploring too, or idk, protecting the new colonies or honestly literally anything besides being in a fucking coma half of the game and then being a plot/villain tool for the last part of it like uuuuggghhhhh
but honestly i like it. sure its not perfect, but like... they bit off more than they could chew with inquisition. this.... required some extra chewing but still, by all means, still a nice game and i can see it continuing the mass effect legacy quite nicely
as always the characters and voice acting and char development and your char development is the fucking crowning achievement of this game tho
“everyone wants a spiky girlfriend” omg ryder
“your affections can also be quite loud. hahaha, you’re blushing!” jaal omg u sly little fucker yes i am also blushing behind the screen (bruh angara are like electric eels? they? can make electrical currents? with their bodies? think of the kinkssss???? the possibilities?? i might or might not be looking for some fanfic now pls writers, provide me with that kink coughcough)
reyes going “i liked the way you looked at me” and jaal calling you darling after you lock in with him and the way liam writes his emails and gil and poker and his poker tells datapad and the teams comments on the pyjack pet and just man
my heart for this game and the beautiful set of characters it has
