Meandering
The 400-plus miles we chewed up Tuesday - in the fit of exuberance that often characterizes the first leg of a long trip - put us ahead of schedule, giving us an opportunity to dillydally on Wednesday.
We took some scenic backroads on a slight detour to New River Gorge National Park and Reserve in the Appalachian Mountain range near Fayetteville, West Virginia.
The steel arch bridge you see here spans 3,030 feet over the gorge.
Ironically, the New River is either the second oldest river in the world, or the fifth, depending on what source you check. Estimates range between 10 and 360 million years. Another thing: It's one of the few rivers in North American that flows northward.
After 4 hours on the road, we alit in Statesville, North Carolina, where we roosted for the night. On to Hilton Head today ...
