Porch Swing Moments
Summary: Joel Miller x fe!Reader -> You and Joel take in a slow afternoon on your porch swing in the fall.
Disclaimer: Mostly fluff, established relationship, a couple steamy moments, friends to lovers, Joel ageing like a fine barrel of whiskey. Not fully proof read.

You heard him before you saw him. His boots crunching against the fallen leaves along your path and porch.
“What are you doing here?” You smiled as he approached, his frame wrapped up in the flannel you got him as a birthday present and the jacket you found the first week you’d moved into your home.
Joel watched as you curled your legs closer to your chest and softly closed your book over your hand to keep your page. He should have known this is where you would be, curled up on your porch, listening to the world go by as you read another.
“Thought I’d come and find you,” Joel told you before he sat down next to you and draped your blanketed legs over his lap. “You weren’t in town.”
You nodded, not bothering to hide your smile as his palm ran up and down your leg, just under the blanket and the leg of your pajama pants.
“Thought you might have been there,” Joel said. His body turned towards you a little more, his legs started to slowly rock the bench you were both sitting on.
You shook your head lightly. “Not today.”
Joel shrugged. “You’re not missing much.”
“How’s Ellie?”
Joel nodded, “She’s okay. She’s, uh, she’s spending the day with Dina. They’re heading out with Maria later on.”
Despite the pride on Joel's face when he talked about his daughter, you could still see the worry etched into his expression. “She’ll be safe, Joel. She knows what she’s doing.”
Air blew from Joel’s lips as he laid his head backwards for a moment and closed his eyes. You could see a little more grey in his hair, and his beard, now. With each change of the season, you saw a little more age take over him. But it was in the best way.
You’d met Joel in the first week he’d returned to Jackson with Ellie. You’d been living in a shared house with several other girls at the time. But, when you were asked to help with a job on the other side of town, it had been there where you’d found your dream home.
It was down its own path that was at least a five minute drive. Once the small section of trees broke away, there stood an old farmhouse.
At the time, it had a broken wrap-around and sheltered porch which wasn’t sheltering much. Most of the windows were cracked or broken and the wooden door had rotted over time.
But it had good bones.
And save for a few damp patches, the inside was pretty much the same as it had been in the 90s.
And, thankfully due to the haunting stories that had been told about it, nobody wanted it. The moment you put in the request for the move and ownership, it was granted almost right away.
You spent all the free time you had working on it, and when it was finally liveable to stay in, Joel was the one who helped you move out.
At the time, Maria was meant to be helping you but she got called away and the girls you were living with were all working. So, you opted to do it yourself. Until a rather attractive cowboy-type caught one of the boxes that nearly fell from the pile you were carrying out of your front door.
“Y/n?”
You nodded. “That’s me. How can I help you?”
“Think this is kinda the other way around. Maria sent me, said you were moving into the haunted farmhouse on the other side of town.”
You nodded, keeping your focus on the conversation and not the way his accent lilted enough to let you know he was probably country enough to be a cowboy.
“Yeah, that’s the one.”
“So where can I help?”
You looked around you. “Well, uh, these are going in the truck. I’ve only got a couple more boxes. Tools and things.”
Joel nodded and followed you to your truck. Ten minutes later, you were navigating the roads with Joel in your passenger seat.
You only spent a few hours together, talking and sometimes laughing, as he helped you set up. At the end of it all, you offered him some shitty beer you’d traded for in town. He took it and for just over an hour, you both sat outside and talked.
You figured from then on, maybe you’d see him once or twice whenever you were in town or on patrol. But that wasn’t how it went.
The next morning, Joel sent someone to your home to get you. Half an hour later, you called out for him in the house he was helping gut and fix back up.
“Up here!” He called.
You had to call out for him twice more when you were upstairs since his voice echoed everywhere, making you unsure of the original direction.
“There you are.”
“Hey,” he smiled a little as he looked at you from his measuring tape and wooden beams. “Thanks for coming.”
“Not that I’m mad about it, but why am I here exactly?”
“You built your home back up, right?”
You nodded.
“Well, I was gonna offer you a job.”
You looked around you. “Really?”
Joel nodded and stood at his full height. “Really. You did a good job on your own place and I need more hands around here that know what they’re doing.”
It took you all of twenty minutes to say yes and to start working. And, somewhere between the falling summer sun and the lowering of the moon on New Year’s Day morning, you and Joel had built something more than just houses.
A strong friendship.
Feelings.
And from January 1st, a loving relationship that you both managed to keep secret for all of about two weeks, until Joel’s protectiveness (and jealousy) warned off every guy that asked to buy you a drink, or asked you for a dance.
Sometimes you could still feel the squeeze of his hand on your hip, underneath your layers of clothing, and the taste of whiskey on his lips from later that night…
But, now, watching him age like a strong barrel of whiskey, you smiled and put down your book.
Joel opened his eyes when he heard you shuffle a little, dog-ear your aged book, and then shift your entire body until you were straddling his thighs.
“Hi, darlin’” he smiled.
You smiled back, holding your hands gently on the sides of his neck. “Hey, handsome.”
His broad hands held you steady as you cupped his jaw and pressed a long, slow kiss to his lips.
As the kiss ended, you rolled the taste of him over your lips and he lifted one of his hands to push the loose hairs from your face. He smiled a little brighter when he saw the heat behind your cheeks.
Even more so when he felt you move your hips over him for a little friction.
“I love you,” you told him.
“I love you, too.”
“I’m glad you came to find me.”
You felt Joel’s hand cup your cheek as he drew you in closer. With his eyes closed, he pressed your head to his and you closed your own eyes.
“I’ll always come and find you,” he swore, a little breathless before he finally found air in your kiss.
With his mouth tasting yours, his other arm wrapped securely around your waist and held you flush against with, with just enough room for you to slowly circle your hips over his own.
A small grunt left him. “Not out here, darlin’. You’ll get cold.”
You would have argued back, but it was pointless. Less than a moment later, Joel stood up with you in his arms and didn’t set you back down until the front door had swung shut behind you both and he’d thrown you onto the crumpled bedding in your room.
He took his time with you. Slow kisses and tender touches, and once the early afternoon had turned into a dark evening, he took things even slower in the kitchen.
First a dance to one of the tapes you’d found under the floorboards a couple of weeks ago, his touch trailing over the exposed skin of your arms and legs before he moved under the shirt you’d stolen from him.
When you were with Joel, it was like the end of the world had never happened. Like you both had all the time in the world to be together, in the moment, without the need to rush in case time ran out.
It was one of the many things you loved about him.
