Money-Saving Tips for Booking Flights with Babies and Toddlers
Tumblr media
Many thanks to Jesse Neugarten, founder of Dollar Flight Club, for this guest post. One of the big barriers to entry for travel is the expense. And obviously, adding a small person to your travel party increases that expense! Hopefully these money-saving tips for booking flights with babies and toddlers will help.
Money-Saving Tips for Booking Flights with Babies & Toddlers
It's a lot of fun to travel around the world with your kids. (It's at least a little bit stressful, too, to be fair.)
But beyond that, taking international trips with your children is great for their development. They get to see more of the world and experience other cultures, which gives them valuable perspective.
Unfortunately, vacations aren't cheap. A family of four pays more than $4,500 on an average trip.
When you're traveling internationally with your family, airfare can be extremely expensive if you don't book the right flights.
Jesse's Quick Cheap Flight Story:
Jesse originally started Dollar Flight Club to let his friends and family know when he found a super cheap flight, like the time he flew from New York City to Stockholm for $290 roundtrip. Since then, Dollar Flight Club has has sent hundreds of thousands of people to awesome destinations.
Jesse used to live in San Diego and was planning a trip to London. The fare was $1,100 USD from San Diego International Airport, but he found one for $380 roundtrip from Los Angeles. So he drive the 2 hours up to Los Angeles to catch the flight and only paid $380 (+ gas) for the whole trip, rather than $1100 USD. This can be replicated all over the world with your family!
Follow these money-saving tips for booking flights so you and your family have more money to spend when it counts:
1. Stop over in other cities
Flying direct is nice. But it can be expensive.
Adding stopovers in other cities can save you hundreds of dollars. Not only that, if you plan it right, you get the opportunity to see an additional city with your kids while actually paying less to travel to a single location.
However, we know that layovers can be challenging with a kid or two. However, we think it's well worth it to save thousands of dollars on airfare. If you want to survive a stopover, definitely give these a try:
Before you land, take a peek in the backseat pocket in front of you for the airport map. Check to see if there is a children's play area. Many airports have outstanding play areas like Chicago O'Hare, San Francisco International, and Seattle-Tacoma International which will make your layover 100x better.
Be creative with games to pass time and have fun.
Find an empty gate so your kids can be louder and run around without annoying other travelers
Stay hydrated! It's easy for kids and adults not to drink enough when traveling. You tend to get dehydrated much faster in the air.
2. Use Google Flights and Momondo
The more you're willing to search for cheap airfare, the more likely you'll be to get a good price.
Use Google Flights and Momondo to search for great deals on airfare. Check those rates against what you can find on Skiplagged.
3. Clear your browser cookies after each search
Cookies are little digital devices that websites use to track your activity. When you keep checking flight prices, travel sites know you're about to make a purchase.
Clear your browser cookies to get cheaper airfare.
4. Book your flights in advance
Generally speaking, airfare gets more expensive the closer you get to your departure date.
One study found that buying tickets 54 days ahead of takeoff yielded the best prices.
That's not to say you won't be able to find better deals earlier or later than that. But it's something to keep in mind.
5. Use a VPN to see if you can get better deals
Your physical location might play a role in the prices you're being offered.
If you subscribe to a VPN service, sign into random servers and search for flights to see if you can get better deals.
6. Airlines that offer discounts for flights with babies and toddlers
When you're traveling with babies and toddlers, there are a few other tricks you can utilize to lower your costs even more.
For example, some airlines offer various discounts and allowances when you're flying with infants.
If you're flying domestically in the United States, you're generally allowed to have kids 2-years-old and younger sit on your lap for free.
If you're flying internationally, you may be able to secure discounted tickets for kids 11-years-old and younger.
Some airlines, like Southwest, sometimes offer reduced airfare for kids on domestic flights. You just have to ask.
For a smooth trip when you're flying internationally, look for availability on Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Virgin Atlantic or Emirates, all of which are known to be child-friendly airlines. Just make sure the price is right.
The above money-saving tips for booking flights with babies & toddlers will help you find cheaper airfare. (Sign up for Dollar Flight Club and we'll do all of that heavy lifting for you! But more on that later.)
There's no point in spending more money on airfare for your family vacation than you have to. By using the above tips and tricks-and booking on kid-friendly airlines-you should be able to reduce your travel expenses and have an enjoyable flight.
Unfortunately, finding the best airfare deals can be an incredibly time-consuming endeavor.
That's exactly why I founded Dollar Flight Club-to help parents like you find great airfare deals without having to waste countless hours searching for tickets.
Sign up for our service today and get the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can take your family anywhere at the lowest price possible.
Happy travels!

WOW Air is selling $69 flights from the US to Europe — but there's a catch
WOW Air is selling $69 tickets for one-way flights from the US to Europe.
The tickets are available for flights to Reykjavik, Iceland from 13 US cities including New York, LA, San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, and Chicago.
However, there are only 1,480 seats available and must be purchased as part of a round trip.
WOW Air is kicking off the summer travel season with a bang by offering one-way flights from the US to Europe for just $69.
The sale covers flights to the airline's main hub in Reykjavik, Iceland from Baltimore (BWI), Chicago (ORD), Cleveland (CLE) , Cincinnati (CVG), Detroit (DTW) , New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), St. Louis (STL), Pittsburgh (PIT), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), and Los Angeles (LAX).
"We want to kick-off the summer travel season by giving our customers some of the lowest prices available," WOW Air founder and CEO Skúli Mogensen said in a statement. "Over the past year, we have seen a continued growth and a strong demand for affordable transatlantic airfare. We are confident we can further build upon this success in the future."
The sale tickets are on sale now for travel between May 21, 2018, and June 20, 2018, as well as between September 1, 2018, and October 27, 2018.
Act fast, because there are only 1,480 tickets available at this price point. In addition, the $69 tickets are only available when purchased as part of a roundtrip reservation. Fortunately, the return flight from Reykjavik can be found on WOW's website for less than $150.
The ultra-low priced flash sales are a trademark for the Icelandic low-cost carrier. Last year, the airline famously offered tickets for as low as $55.
Since its launch in 2011, WOW Air has become a disruptive force in the low-cost trans-Atlantic market.  The carrier operates a fleet of 20 new Airbus A320, A321, and A330 airliners. Last week, WOW Air launched its new business class that promises to deliver a comfortable premium cabin experience for the value conscious traveler.

U.S. Airlines Cancelled Fewer Flights Than Usual in November
In November 2017, no U.S. airline cancelled fewer flights than Delta, which has trademarked the phrase, "The On-Time Machine." Delta Air Lines
Skift Take: Maybe airline service isn't as strong as most customers would like. But there's no mistaking the data. Operationally, many U.S. airlines are stronger than ever. That's good news for passengers who want to get to their destination on time.
— Brian Sumers
U.S. airlines are canceling fewer flights than ever, and arriving on-time at nearly an historic rate, according to new government data released Friday.
The nation’s 12 largest airlines — a group that includes regional carriers ExpressJet and SkyWest Airlines — on average canceled just three of 1,000 domestic flights in November, tying a record set in September 2016 and November 2016.
In addition, the government said, the dozen airlines posted an on-time performance of 88.3 percent in November, the second-highest rate ever recorded. The government considers a flight on-time if it arrives within 14 minutes of its scheduled time.
Of the two metrics, cancellation rate is more impressive. Airlines can control on-time performance by padding schedules with the extra time. A flight from New York John F. Kennedy to Los Angeles a decade ago might have been scheduled for fewer than six hours, while today it may take 6 hours 30 minutes. The extra time helps an airline improve its punctuality, though the trip takes longer.
Some airlines play the extra time game more than others, with the Wall Street Journal reporting last year that, on average, Delta Air Lines schedules flights with five more minutes of padding than American Airlines.
Airlines have fewer tricks to avoid flight cancellations. Rather than using gimmicks to improve metrics, U.S. airlines, led by Delta, have made canceling fewer flights a priority.
On 242 days in 2017, Delta did not cancel a mainline flight. Also, on 90 days, it did not cancel a Delta flight or a Delta Connection flight. It’s an impressive streak, though, as The Points Guy noted recently, Delta occasionally delays a flight for 24 hours, a ploy that probably inconveniences customers as much as a cancellation.
United has also prioritized completion factor, going 59 days in 2017 without canceling a mainline flight, up from 21 in 2016.
According to government data, the worst larger U.S. airline for cancellations in November was Virgin America, at 1.3 percent. Next was Virgin America’s owner, Alaska Airlines, with a 0.9 percent cancellation rate.
Still, while the government cancellation statistics are impressive, the numbers would almost certainly be different if more than two regional airlines reported data.
During poor weather or when other operational problems crop up — like the December power outage at Atlanta’s Airport — big airlines almost always start by canceling regional flights at United Express, American Eagle and Delta Connection.
But many of the regional carriers most likely to cancel, such as Envoy Air, Compass Airlines and Endeavor Air, do not report data. Carriers only must report if they account for at least 1 percent of total U.S. airline passenger revenue.
Complaints
By most metrics, airlines are improving. In addition to better on-time and cancellation rates, carriers are also mishandling fewer bags. The rate for mishandled bags dropped from 2.04 per 1,000 passengers in October to 1.83 in November.
But overall complaints rose. For all airlines, foreign and domestic, the government said it received 1,299 complaints about airline service in November, an increase of 27.1 percent, year-over-year.
However, it seems the majority of extra complaints came from one incident involving Virgin Australia, which received 256 complaints, all but one about airfares.
In late October, Virgin Australia published a $172 roundtrip economy fare between Dallas and Melbourne. It later said the fare was a mistake, even though the economy fare, while cheap, wasn’t that much lower than sale fares airlines occasionally offer.
According toBen Schlappig, who writes the OneMileAtATime blog, Virgin Australia wanted as long as as nine days to cancel tickets, and many customers who bought the deal had already made non-refundable hotel reservations. In the comments section of his blog, many readers told Schlappig they planned to file complaints.

Get Your Wanderlust On With These Amazing Black Friday Travel Deals
8 Black Friday 2017 Travel Deals To Get Your Wanderlust On
Travel expenses always seem to suck the joy out of vacation plans, especially around the holidays. Whether you’re escaping to a warm, tropical destination come January 2018, or trying to get a last minute flight back home to your folks for Christmas, the costs are outrageous. On the plus side, if you plan right, you can use these eight Black Friday travel deals to relieve some debt in your wallet this year.
Last week, DealsNews set predictions for Black Friday travel deals, estimating that roundtrip domestic flights would go for $100 or less, roundtrip flights to Europe would start at $200, and roundtrip flights to Asia would start at $500. While not all travel deals have been announced, here are some of the flight deals that have been and will be available soon.
Here are some of the best Black Friday flight options from SkyScanner that will likely be on sale Nov. 24-27:
American Airlines:
Round-trip flights starting at $80 from New York.
Round-trip flights starting at $66 from Miami.
Round-trip flights starting at $48 from Philadelphia.
Round-trip flights starting at $70 from Chicago.
Alaska Airlines:
Round-trip flights starting at $44 from Los Angeles
Round-trip flights starting at $80 from San Francisco
Frontier Airlines:

New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, and Las Vegas were the top five destinations in 2016 from SkyScanner Black Friday and Cyber Monday predictions, and will likely be top destinations again this year.
Our Black Friday Sale is here! Hurry, these fares and other great first-day deals are going fast! Limited quantities available. Book by November 24, 2017 (23:59 MT). Travel between November 29, 2017 – April 28, 2018. Visit https://t.co/M9FLT6XbxL to book. http://pic.twitter.com/WznrJSqbJc

If you’re thinking outside the box for next year’s travel plans, here are some travel package deals for people who are trying to do international and multi-destination trips. Starting November 20-30, Intrepid Travel will offer 15 percent off all international trips, to any of their 26 locations according to Refinery29. The deal applies to trips starting February 1 to September 30, 2018.
If you’re looking for less excursion and more relaxation, look no further.
CheapCaribbean’s 12 Days of Beach campaign might be a good choice for your warm getaway. Starting on Cyber Monday, Nov. 27, CheapCaribbean will release one all-inclusive discounted vacation deal every day for 12 consecutive days. Each package has a different location and will only be available for 24 hours, starting at 10 a.m. ET the day of.
Topdeck Travel, a company that creates “trips for 18-30 somethings” in six different continents will offer a discount of up to 70 percent off trips starting November 24-27. Some of these deals include a $159 trip to Sydney, Australia for five days and a two-week trip to Morocco, Portugal, and Spain for less than $600, according to Refinery29.
Now, obviously booking cheap flights is a plus, but not without finding a good hotel to stay at first.
DealsNews projected that about a third of all Black Friday travel deals will be for hotels. Here are some tips:
First of all, don’t be afraid to aim high. Take a look at four- and five-star hotels because hotels usually provide deals on their high-end places. You should also be expecting flat-rate discounts from Expedia and Hotels.com, two booking sites. In addition to that, keep an eye out for the bigger chains like Starwood and Hyatt, which are projected to have anywhere from 30 to 60 percent off stays, as well as hotels on the Off-Strip Las Vegas which could be for under $20 a night, according to DealsNews.
The best Black Friday travel deals will be right at everybody’s fingertips, it’s just a matter of who gets to them first.

These Flights To Hawaii Are Cheap AF And Perfect For Your End-Of-Summer Vacation
Before bidding summer a complete farewell, why not take an impromptu vacation to an island paradise? Don't brush it off as a total out-of-budget affair just yet, because there are plenty of cheap flights to Hawaii right now, reports. According to Airfare Spot, round trip tickets from the mainland to the islands are under $344 nope, I'm not kidding.
The extra low ticket prices are probablythe result of more flights making their way to Hawaii. In June, United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines added a combined 14 newroutes.United added 11 routes to celebrate 70 years flying to Hawaii, while the locally based airline added three of its own, presumably allowing a drop in fare.
Aside from those two airlines, Airfare Spot shows that Alaska Airways and Virgin America also have great deals at the moment. However, there's sort of a catch: the lowrates are for flights that originate on the West Coast (e.g. Los Angeles or Portland).
An East Coast roundtrip ticket will likelyrun you double the cost at around $600. Honestly, it's still pretty affordable when you consider just how far you're traveling. I've paid the same amount booking a last-minute Thanksgiving flight home from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, which is way less cool, TBH.
Giphy
Whether you plan on going solo, with your fam, or maybe on a blind date like that viral Tinder couple, it's safe to say Hawaii will be well worth the money you spend on a bargain flight.
Need some trip ideas? No matter which of Hawaii's eight main islands you choose to fly into, you can expect to participate in some majorly cool activities like attending a real-life luau, learning to surf, or seeing volcanos up close.
Honestly, I'm not sure what you're waiting for. Go, go, go book your flights!

* World Travel Tips : The Most Scenic Train Rides In The U.S.
Travel Tips -
The phrase is “planes, trains and automobiles.” But sometimes it feels like we forget all about the train altogether, favoring a car’s convenience or the speed of a flight. But trains are a great way to travel: You’ll never hit traffic and it’s much less hassle than you find at the airport. And best of all, certain American train routes bring you much closer to this country’s natural beauty, history and wonder than a car or plane ever could.
Take a look at some of the most scenic train rides in the U.S. below. Book a ticket, then sit back and watch it all roll by.
EAST COAST
1. Cape Cod Central Railroad
Route: Ride east from Bourne to Hyannis, Massachusetts  Duration: 2 hours
This coastal excursions run on approximately 27 miles of track from May through October. Traveling from the Cape to the Cape Cod Canal, you can expect to see sand dunes, woodlands, cranberry bogs and salt marshes along the way.
2. Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express
Route: North from New York City to Rutland, Vermont Duration: 5 hours, 30 minutes
This daily route is named for Ethan Allen, the revolutionary war patriot who settled in Vermont. Upstate New York and Vermont both host vast wildernesses, skiing territories, lakes and mountain landscapes. See all of it go by from the first few stops in the Hudson Valley, up through the Catskills, Albany and Saratoga Springs. Stop along the way or ride all the way to the end ― Rutland, Vermont is the state’s second largest city and home to charming B&B’s and inns and several summer festivals.
WEST COAST
3. Amtrak’s Coast Starlight
Route: Ride north from Los Angeles through Portland to Seattle Duration: 35 hours
The Coast Starlight is easily one of the most beautiful train rides in North America. Ride along stretches of the Pacific ocean, up through San Francisco and past lush forests and snow-covered Mount Shasta. This train runs every day.
4. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner
Route: San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego Duration: 5 hours, 45 minutes
Cruise along the Southern California coast as you travel south from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. Amtrak says that to be any closer to the water, you’d need to be on a surfboard. Jump off the train when it stops in Anaheim for a fun day at Disneyland. The train is easy to catch, with multiple departures a day.
5. Napa Valley Wine Train
Route: Napa Valley to St. Helena and back Duration: 3 hours
Ride 36 miles roundtrip through pure California wine country beauty in antique Pullman cars. The route itself is more than 150 years old, and you’ll see some of the most expensive and well-known agricultural real estate in the U.S. The trip will also help you get a better understanding of why the geography and climate of Napa make it so conducive to cultivating vineyards. The journey is guided, and riders can choose between wine tours, dining tours or special day packages such as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day tours. The train runs throughout the year.
6. Grand Canyon Railway
Route: Williams, Arizona north to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park Duration: 2 hours, 15 minutes each way
There’s just nothing quite like the Grand Canyon, and seeing it by train means you’ll likely see even more of it. Watch plant life change as you leave Flagstaff behind and keep your eyes peeled for elk, mountain lions, mule deer and ravens flying overhead. The train runs daily. Train crew members provide stories, history, music and entertainment along the way.
7. Royal Gorge Railroad
Route: Roundtrip from Canon City, Colorado, through the Royal Gorge Duration: 2-2.5 hours
Take in the breathtaking scenery of Colorado’s Royal Gorge on a short guided tour. The area is steeped in American history, including when steel miners descended on the land in the 1870s. Tours include food, drink and storytelling, providing context to the scenery that’ll take the experience to the next level.
ALASKA
8. Alaska’s Coastal Classic Train
Route: Anchorage to Seward, Alaska Duration: 4 hours
To see the Alaskan wilderness up close while you travel, go by train instead of car. You’ll spot bald eagles, beluga whales, glacial backdrops and alpine meadows as the train passes through the Kenai Mountains, which are rich with wildlife. Trains run every day.
SOUTH
9. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
Route: Bryson City to Nantahala Gorge, North Carolina Duration: 3.5 hours to a full day, depending on the excursion
There is significant beauty to be seen and fun to be had on this route, which makes long stops along the Nantahala River and in Dillsboro, a small historic town. Jump aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad to see the Carolina mountains and more than 125 varieties of trees and plant life. Country inns, lodges, historic sites and quaint shops line this route along the Great Smoky Mountains National Park region. Trains run throughout year, but schedules vary by season.
MIDWEST
10. Amtrak’s California Zephyr
Route: Cross-country from Chicago through Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Reno to San Francisco Duration: 51 hours, 20 minutes
People who dream of driving cross country but don’t actually want to drive should consider the California Zephyr. The train runs every day.
11. Amtrak’s Empire Builder
