US police agencies took intelligence directly from IDF, leaked files show

Hacked police files show US law enforcement agencies for decades received analysis of incidents in the Israel-Palestine conflict directly from the Israeli Defense Forces and Israeli thinktanks, training on domestic “Muslim extremists” from pro-Israel non-profits, and surveilled social media accounts of pro-Palestine activists in the US.

The Guardian’s analysis of documents from the BlueLeaks trove of internal law enforcement documents found no indication that this was balanced by information from other Middle Eastern sources or US Muslim community groups. Nor is there any indication that pro-Israel activists were subject to any specific scrutiny.

At a time of polarized reactions to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the analysis raises questions about the scope of police intelligence-gathering in the US and the influence of Israel and its supporters on those efforts, and how this has shaped the treatment of activists and social movements, especially those who are pro-Palestinian.

Mike German, a fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice, former FBI undercover agent and author of Disrupt, Discredit, and Divide: How the New FBI Damages Democracy, said the use of such documents and receipt of such training was damaging the practice of good law enforcement.

“It’s frustrating that we’ve developed this national law enforcement intelligence-sharing network that basically takes disinformation straight from the rightwing social media fever swamps and puts it out under the imprimatur of law enforcement intelligence, so it becomes an amplifier of disinformation rather than a corrective to that disinformation,” German said.

The BlueLeaks trove was obtained and released by self-described hacktivists in June 2020. It contains material from more than 200 law enforcement agencies, including intelligence material disseminated by federally sponsored umbrella bodies such as fusion centers and high-intensity drug-trafficking area (Hidta) programs.

One body whose internal archives were exposed in the hack, LA Clear, is tasked with providing “analytical and case support” in narcotics investigations in southern California, according to its website. It was established as a joint project between the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association, the California department of justice, and the Los Angeles county sheriff’s department in 1992.

Despite its ostensible mission to combat drug trafficking, the LA Clear archive of training materials (labeled “lacleartraining”) included in the BlueLeaks trove has several analyses of previous episodes of widespread conflict in Gaza and the West Bank that are sourced directly from the IDF and closely aligned Israeli thinktanks.

One of the documents is a reproduction of a PowerPoint-style presentation dated 11 April 2011, badged with the insignia and name of the Strategic Division of the IDF, and entitled “Escalation in the Gaza Strip”.

The presentation is marked “for official use only”, a US government designation for documents which are not for public release.

The document asserts that “there has recently been a sharp increase in terrorist attacks emanating from the Gaza Strip intentionally directed at Israeli civilians in southern Israel”. The presentation offers evidence including Israeli counts of rocket attacks from Hamas, the Sha’ar HaNegev school bus attack and the killing of a family in “the Jewish community of Itamar” on 11 March 2011. (Later in 2011, two cousins from the nearby Palestinian village of Awarta were convicted of the murders and sentenced to multiple consecutive life sentences.)

The document does not present the long history of conflict between residents of Itamar, which the international community considers an illegal West Bank settlement, and neighboring villages. In 2010, a Human Rights Watch report singled out Itamar’s settlers with allegations of land theft, raids on Palestinian villages and extrajudicial killings.

Elsewhere in LA Clear’s training materials is another PowerPoint-style presentation authored by the Dado Center, a military studies department of the IDF. The presentation offers a retrospective analysis of “Operation Cast Lead”, the IDF’s name for the 22-day military assault on the Gaza Strip that commenced on 27 December 2008.

That document is labeled “FOUO”, an abbreviation of “for official use only” and appears to be a cursory visual aid for a spoken presentation. It points to “unique geo-strategic conditions (Gaza encircled by Egypt and Israel)”; “unique operational conditions (air supremacy, intelligence superiority)”; and “unique adversary (multiple identities, limited capabilities)”.

The presentation, which only includes the IDF’s perspective, also highlights challenges including “legitimacy (external & internal, strategic narrative)” and “media coverage (a controlled information environment)”.

Amnesty International alleged in a 2009 report that during Operation Cast Lead, the IDF targeted civilians, carried out “indiscriminate attacks that failed to distinguish between legitimate military targets and civilian objects”, and used munitions containing white phosphorus, the use of which against civilians is a violation of international law, according to the World Health Organization.

Another document in the trove is a longer 2011 report assessing “terrorism from the Gaza Strip since Operation Cast Lead” produced by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC). The ITIC is an Israeli research group whose founding director and current director were previously IDF intelligence officers. The thinktank reportedly maintains an office at the Israeli defense ministry.

None of these documents mention narcotics trafficking or criminal activity in the US. LA Clear’s archive and the BlueLeaks trove do not appear to contain any alternative accounts of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The Guardian contacted LA Clear for comment through the body’s website but received no response.

Elsewhere in the BlueLeaks trove, there is ample evidence of a close relationship between law enforcement agencies and US-based pro-Israel organizations.

The archive shows how close the relationship is between a range of law enforcement agencies and the pro-Israel civil rights non-profit the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Emails preserved in BlueLeaks show various agencies promoting ADL training sessions for law enforcement officers, including a January 2013 session on “screening of persons by observational techniques” and a seminar at the Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center on the “evolving nature of Islamic extremists”.

ADL staff are shown as registered attendees at events run by fusion centers, offering bios that advise the organization that “we facilitate workshops for law enforcement on extremism, hate crime and (in Washington DC and Israel) counter-terrorism”.

The ADL, whose website banner heading at the time of reporting read “We stand with Israel”, is one of very few community organizations who train or are consulted by law enforcement officers. They are frequently cited throughout BlueLeaks as an authority on extremism and terrorism.

The Guardian contacted the ADL for comment but received no response.

There is no evidence in BlueLeaks that Muslim community groups such as the Council for American-Islamic Relations (Cair) are consulted on issues involving Muslims; Cair is barely mentioned outside a series of four newsletters from the Omaha Terrorism Early Warning Group describing it as “unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land terror funding trial”.

In 2007, Cair was named alongside other organizations as an unindicted co-conspirator in an FBI indictment concerning a land trust it alleged was funding Hamas. In 2010, a federal judge found that the agency had violated the organization’s rights, though there was evidence connecting the groups to the trust. A 2013 Office of the Inspector General report found “significant issues with the way the FBI implemented and managed its Cair policy and guidance” in connection with the case.

There are indications that this emphasis shaped investigations: in at least two instances, the National Criminal Intelligence Resource Center archived social media feeds of Palestinian American pro-Palestine activists. The feeds indicated no apparent wrongdoing.

The Guardian previously reported revelations from the trove including that Google was passing user data directly to law enforcement authorities; that law enforcement officials baselessly linked “antifa” activists to arson attacks; that officials were characterizing the Proud Boys as an extremist group in private long before the events of 6 January 2021; and the private firms profiting from police militarization.

On the scope of the latest revelations, German said: “At a time where there’s much more public sensitivity to foreign influence in domestic affairs, having a foreign country’s security services aligned with the beat cop on the streets of American neighborhoods is concerning.”

Changing The Hyperlink Text Color Within A PowerPoint Theme.

The other day, I had to create a mock website using Power Point. Within the mock site, I needed to Hyperlink everything within the Power Point document so that the mock site would act like the actual site.

If you don't have experience, and have not had the need to change the textual color of Hyperlinks, then you definitely want to know this so that you will never be in a time sensitive situation where you need to change the textual color of a hyperlink in a Power Point slide and you have someone right there waiting.

1. As I went through the document, I made decisions as to hyperlinking entire pictures and/or shapes that people can click on vs. hyperlinking text so that people can click on a textual item to be taken to another slide within the same Power Point document.

2. So let's see how to change the color of the textual hyperlink within a particular PowerPoint Theme.

Step 1

Click on the Design tab and find the theme you are currently using and select it.

Step 2

If using 2010, Click “Colors” (right side) and then select “Create New Theme Colors.” A popup window appears, that displays the particular color settings of the theme you are currently using. If you are using 2013 and above then under the Design Tab, choose the down arrow to the right of the word “Variants" (which is on the right side of the ribbon) above, choose Colors, then Customize.

Step 3

Change the ��Hyperlink” and “Followed Hyperlink” colors if you wish to use followed colors.

At the bottom of the Create New Theme Colors (customize in 2013 and above) pop-up window, you’ll see two selections labeled “Hyperlink” and “Followed Hyperlink.” If you’d like to change the color that the hyperlink turns once it has been visited "selected", click the box beside “Followed Hyperlink” and select a new color to represent the already selected link. Some people use the same color for the Hyperlink and Followed Hyperlink.

Step 4

Once you save and exit the Create New Theme Colors Dialog Box (customize for 2013 and above), if you have selected a different "Followed Hyperlink" color then you should see that new color for any Hyperlink that has been previously selected.

I suggest you go through this process at least once so if it comes up, you will say I have done this before!

No one asked but look at my pride speech (below the read more). Boss wanted a personal story and a We're All In This Together™ vibe. Still needs some polishing but I'm pretty happy with the shape of it so far!

This year is a significant one. 20 years ago, on July 20th 2005, gay marriage was officially given royal assent following approval by the Canadian senate the day before. Before I get into my own story, I just wanted to acknowledge that it’s been 20 years of weddings and vows and love expressed openly. It’s a privilege many people never got to experience and still don’t get to have and I think it’s important we remember how lucky we are, even if there is still a long way to go.

I joined my school’s GSA, or Gay-Straight Alliance as was the term at the time, back when I was in grade 9 circa 2010. I remember it was small. We met every Friday in the school's theater at 7:30 AM with the drama teacher Mr. Hudson supervising. Early mornings for most teenagers, Tim Horton’s iced caps in our hands and oftentimes there’d be someone frantically finishing first period homework between discussions. I have fond memories of sitting on that stage with half a dozen other highschoolers while we unpacked the trials and tribulations of being queer in the early 2010’s.

We were hardly revolutionary in the grand scheme of things, but you’d think we were an armed and trained militia or tyrannical despots the way people would give us a wide berth.The principal in particular was terrified of us, pimple faced teens with braces and questionable fashion choices and burgeoning caffeine addictions. Nothing horrifying or intimidating, really. Just some kids banding together trying to carve out something safe, something new.

I suppose, though, in hindsight that is revolutionary. The art and the burden of making something new. Trailblazing is a lonely endeavor. I remember between the study prep for biology class and discussing if Glee was actually good representation or unbearably cringey, we did do the work. We would duct tape our mouths shut on Day of Silence, handing out papers with facts on violence against 2SLGBTQ+ people. I remember other students used to make a game out of it, baiting and snipping us into talking and sometimes trying to physically remove the tape from our mouths.

We created the first queer zine to be published at our high school. Only a dozen or so copies were made, mine is still nestled somewhere on my bookshelf. Just doodles and snippets of poems we liked, tangible evidence of creation and existence. Nothing like the elite professional zines you see sold for money at festivals or online, no facts or stories or education. Just rainbows and childish excitement at being the first.

Every Transgender Day of Remembrance, we would sit together in our circle of 7 or 8 teens and go through a powerpoint with names of transgender individuals who had died that year. We’d remember their names with tears in our eyes and think about the sheer amount of John and Jane Does on the list. Whispered words of hate crimes, the concept of gay panic defenses and conversion camps. Heavy burdens to bear on the shoulders of children.

I think about how heavy those burdens must have been for those who came before us. Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Harvey Milk, and the Stonewall Riots in 1969. In Canada we had George Hislop, James Egan, The Brunswick Four, and the riotous aftermath of Operation Soap in 1981. We stand on the shoulders of giants in that regard. We are upheld by the people who came before us, who fought for us to have gentler lives than they did.

Pride month, to me, is more than celebrating. It’s honoring where we came from and where we’re heading and all the groundwork accomplished by these activists and many more. Pride has always been something full of grit and determination and sheer stubborn refusal to be broken down and made palatable. A world without queer and trans and two-spirit people has never existed and it never will. We have been here since time immemorial and we will be right here unapologetically until the end of it all. We celebrate pride month for ourselves, for each other, for those who can’t celebrate openly and those who won’t ever celebrate with us again.

This pride, I want to pay special attention to the little things that contribute to the mountains that we are. Queer individuals who are fighting to be themselves in the face of ignorance. Allies who stand up and show up even if their voices shake. Teenagers doing the work in their schools and newcomers to the community learning how to be themselves and every closeted person who’s contributing unimaginable beauty to the world by simply existing even when things are scary.

This is endurance. This is growth. This is love. These tiny moments are everything. A tapestry is nothing without its individual threads and we are made of a million decisions. The decision to learn, the decision to help, the decision to keep going even when the path is full of the unknown. We are all trailblazers in our own way. Don’t forget it’s your first time living this life. Every step forward, be that on the grand stage of the world or the smaller footsteps in our day to day lives, is worth remembering and honouring. We are monuments unto ourselves with every breath we take, every day we persevere.

Odds are no one is going to write wikipedia articles about your first pronoun circle. There probably won’t be speeches quoting your coming out story decades from now. More likely than not, people won’t study your actions in history books or whisper your name in reverent celebration.

That does not mean your choices don’t matter. They do. You matter. You, amazing you, are an irreplaceable puzzle piece. You, wonderful you, are something to be treasured. You, beautiful you, are revolutionary.

With that, I want to leave you with some final words. Sappho of Lesbos was a poet in ancient Greece, circa 630 – 570 BC. From her name we get the words lesbian and sapphic, two words used to describe queer love. There is much debate as to her sexuality and how it would have been defined in her time versus how we define sexual attraction nowadays, but most scholars accept that there was undeniable queerness to her poetry. A lot of her work didn’t survive the years, oftentimes only fragments remain. But there is one line that stays with me. A line that I hope we try to keep close when everything feels hopeless and frightening and like we’re shouting into the void.

“Someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us.”

Was happy with the pricing of the movies here. First run movies at discounted prices. The theaters are small, but comfortable. I first saw a movie here in 1987 and it hasnt changed much, except the technology.What disappointed me were the lights that never turn off and when the movie starts nobody closes the doors (I went to the back and closed the doors myself, nothing I could do about the lights). How can one really enjoy a movie theater experience with lights in the ceiling shining down in your eyes.I came here for 3D, because ONLY the Dolby Digital 3D works for me, the crappy RealD 3D doesnt work nearly as well. Then as it turned out the movie I wanted to see was not being shown in 3D at all.I would go back again, but probably sit more towards the front away from the spotlights and open doors.

This place and staff has always given me a pleasurable experience and have gone on various days and times for the last 5yrs Even going during regular hours/days but frequent the senior/family days & hours. Been there during peak hrs & always someone at doors ready to go in and clean soon as a movie is over. Cant go to the Regals or Edwards and the like for top movies popcorn and drinks for the same price or less than what others charge just to get in the doors! Too bad Steve Crow had a bad experience, I have never seen or heard of such a thing all the times Ive gone. Im even greeted & asked where my friend is when I go alone. And acknowledged when Ive not been seen for awhile! Local theaters always best over commercial places anytime!

I see a lot of people complaining about the employees and the seats and screens. Download blackberry handheld software for 8520. I have never had a problem with any of the employees. They arent really friendly, but have never been rude to me or any of my kids. Sure it s small, but for the value, worth it for me. We could never afford to see a movie otherwise. I go to this theater almost exclusively esp so that we could go bowling before or after a movie: $7 refillable (one time before the movie ends) popcorn, clean theater, good sound system, friendly staff. Prices are catching up to that of UA and Regency..$9/adult is more than at some other places; so we are pulling the reins a tad. Maybe it pays to be a frequent movie pass goer..then again, we should head out to the state parks and outdoors more. Head out and shape up, America!

And while more than six-in-ten white people offer positive evaluations of the economy, that compares with roughly half of Hispanic people and just a third of black Americans .

There is a 12 percentage-point gender gap in these views: 64% of men say the economy is doing well, compared with 52% of women. And while 64% of college graduates say economic conditions are excellent or good, 54% of those without a college degree say the same.

Views of the economy also differ starkly by income. Among those with annual family incomes of $100,000 or more, 72% have positive views of the economy, with one-quarter rating it as excellent. Roughly two-thirds of those who make $75,000-$99,999 and $50,000-$74,999 rate the economy as excellent or good.

Do Republican Presidents Have Better Economic Records

Republicans often get the nod for being better with the economy. For example, a recent Pew Research Poll of registered voters found that 49 percent of voters trusted Republicans to handle the economy better, while 40 percent trusted Democrats. This post seeks to answer a simple question is this perception true when it comes to the presidency? Do Republican presidents have better economies?

To answer the question, I looked at a variety of measures. These included measures of economic performance, like Gross Domestic Product or the change in the unemployment rate. I also looked at some areas of criticism for Democrats that their policies lead to debt and inflation. Then, I looked at President Trumps favorite measure of performance the stock market. Finally, because this blog is about inequality, I examined how a measure of inequality did under Republican presidents and Democrats.

The results are presented in all their glory below, but let me summarize it for you. If you are going to vote for a Republican presidential candidate based on their economic performance, think again. The perception that Republican presidents get better economic performance is wrong. Across most of the measures I will present, if anything, Republicans do worse. And you dont have to believe me. Democrats gear their economic policies to benefit low-income and middle-income families. They argue that reducing income inequality is the best way to foster economic growth. Low-income families are more likely to spend any extra money on necessities instead of saving or investing it. That directly increases demand and spurs economic growth. Democrats also support a Keynesian economic theory, which says that the government should spend its way out of a recession.

One dollar spent on increased food stamp benefits generates $1.73 in economic output.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt first outlined the Economic Bill of Rights in his 1944 State of the Union address. It included taxes on war profiteering and price controls on food costs. The numbers dont lie. The question is why every Democrat isnt talking about this all the time.

Our two political parties have certain identities that are seared into our collective public brain. Democrats: the party of workers, of civil rights, of compassion and fairness, and of higher taxes and more regulation. Republicans: party of the rich, big business , the free market, and lower taxes and less regulation.

And because the GOP is the party of big business, it is universally assumed that Republicans are better at handling the economy. Polls typically find that people trust Democrats more on all the things that government does, which stands to reason, but trust Republicans more on handling the economy. Just last week I saw a poll in which respondents rated Biden as better equipped than Trump to handle race relations, the virus response, and two or three other things; but on the economy, Trump bested Biden 51-46.

Its hard wired, and its wrong. Dead wrong.

The main lesson of this article is that a Democrat or Republican president doesnt really affect your investment returns. As there are so many variables that influence the S&P 500s index performance, who is president is not a significant factor.

The same thing goes for the CEO of a large publicly-traded company. If Tim Cook at Apple retired tomorrow, do you think the event would make a difference in Apples share price? Good Morning Why Has The Us Economy Fared So Much Better Under Democratic Presidents Than Republicans

Has the economy fared better under Democratic presidents or Republican presidents over the past century? The sensible answer might seem to be: Its probably been similar.

Presidents, after all, have only limited control over the economy. They dont have much influence over the millions of decisions every day, made by consumers and business executives, that shape economic growth, jobs, incomes and stock prices. Over the course of a century, it seems logical that the economy would have performed similarly under Democrats and Republicans.

But it hasnt.

The economy has fared far better under Democrats. The gap, as one academic paper puts it, is startlingly large. Here are the headline numbers:

The gap exists not only for G.D.P. and jobs but also for incomes, productivity and stock prices. The gap also exists if you assume that a presidents policies affect the economy with a lag and dont start his economic clock until months after he takes office. Virtually any reasonable look at the data shows a big Democratic advantage.

My colleague Yaryna Serkez and I have just documenting the pattern and the potential reasons. A few possibilities are easy to reject. Its not about congressional control, nor is it about Democrats running up larger budget deficits.

Republican presidents have been slow to respond to recessions and other crises Donald Trump and both George Bushes being examples.

The Economy Does Better Under Democrats

Republicans have managed to create and maintain the myth that their party is best for the American economy. The facts say something different.

But the facts are not on the Republicans side. Historically, the American economy has performed measurably better when Democrats are in charge.

Here are some quick stats you can use when to support your assertions about the economy:

1) Since 1947, when official GDP calculations were introduced, GDP growth under Democratic administrations has consistently outpaced that of Republican administrations. This is true even when major crises like the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic are factored out.

A similar study by Princeton economists found that from Truman to Obama, growth was 1.8 percent higher under Democratic administrations than their Republican counterparts.

2) On average, stock market growth is stronger under Democrats. Again comparing the period since 1947, data shows that markets grew an average of 10.8 percent under Democratic presidents, compared to 5.6 percent for under Republican presidents.

3) Democratic administrations create more jobs.

Since the 1960s, when the party holding the presidency began to fluctuate regularly, Democrats have, on average, outperformed Republicans in terms of job growth. Republican President Regan is an outlier, as he did post impressive job numbers. Here is a comparison:

The study looks at several key factors including the state of the stock market, unemployment, the national debt, home and gas prices, and even the level of income equality across America. Researchers also examined how each administration since Dwight D. Eisenhower has affected the nations fortunes.

I enjoyed David Leonhardts opinion piece in the New YorkTimes today including graphic evidence that the econmomy performed better under Democratic presidents for the last century.

A president has only limited control over the economy. And yet there has been a stark pattern in the United States for nearly a century. The economy has grown significantly faster under Democratic presidents than Republican ones.

Its true about almost any major indicator: gross domestic product, employment, incomes, productivity, even stock prices. Its true if you examine only the precise period when a president is in office, or instead assume that a presidents policies affect the economy only after a lag and dont start his economic clock until months after he takes office. The gap holds almost regardless of how you define success, two economics professors at Princeton, Alan Blinder and Mark Watson,;write. They describe it as startlingly large.

The six presidents who have presided over the fastest job growth have all been Democrats, as you can see above. The four presidents who have presided over the slowest growth have all been Republicans.

The big question, of course, is why. And there are not easy answers.

I have shown the data to multiple economists in recent weeks, and most say they are not sure how to explain it, at least not fully. We dont quite get why its the case, Katherine Eriksson, a professor at the University of California, Davis, who specializes in economic history, told me. , an economist at the University of Tennessee, described the pattern to the graduate students in a class she teaches and asked for their thoughts. They were sort of stumped, she said.

The Party Thats Actually Best For The Economy

Many analyses look at which party is best for the economy. A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that Democratic presidents since World War II have performed much better than Republicans. On average, Democratic presidents grew the economy 4.4% each year versus 2.5% for Republicans.

A study by Princeton University economists Alan Blinder and Mark Watson found that the economy performs better when the president is a Democrat. They report that by many measures, the performance gap is startlingly large. Between Truman and Obama, growth was 1.8% higher under Democrats than Republicans.

A Hudson Institute study found that the six years with the best growth were evenly split between Republican and Democrat presidents.

Most of these evaluations measure growth during the presidents term in office. But no president has control over the growth added during his first year. The budget for that fiscal year was already set by the previous president, so you should compare the gross domestic product at the end of the presidents last budget to the end of his predecessors last budget.

For Obama, that would be the fiscal year from October 1, 2009, to September 30, 2018. Thats FY 2010 through FY 2017. During that time, GDP increased from $15.6 trillion to $17.7 trillion, or by 14%. Thats 1.7% a year.

Republicans business-friendly approach leads most people to believe that they are better for the economy. A closer look reveals that Democrats are, in many respects, actually better.

Since Joe Biden became president, several surveys have found a sharp rise in Republican pessimism about the economy.

This might seem surprising considering the national economy which experienced one of its worst downturns thanks to the coronavirus pandemic is now objectively improving. The United States added 916,000 jobs in March, smashing Dow Jones expectations and the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level in over a year. No, I dont agree with much that hes said since he started his 2016 presidential campaign, and recent revelations have rightly drawn opprobrium. But since Im also an agreeable old southerner, Ill give credit where credit is due. Is there some key combination that will allow me to modify (click/drag) the Text Box containing my text to create a curve. I found the rotate commands but nothing for my current need. I have previously done this by using Word, creating the necessary text in WordArt and then copying it to my Pages document. This works but is archaic, believing that Pages should be robust enough to perform this function as well, given it's claim to being a Word Processing/Page Layout product. This process doesn't allow me much flexibility in modifying the text or the curvature after the fact. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...
