Introduction

India has been ranked 114 in a list of 128 countries closely followed by Nepal (125) and Pakistan (126) on the Global Gender Gap report by the World Economic Forum (WEF). “The data captures the magnitude of the gap between men and women in critical areas including economic participation and opportunity, political empowerment, educational attainment, health and survival, female life expectancy and sex ratio at birth [1].” The incidence of crimes committed against women in India has seen a continuous rise over the years. Crimes against women increased [2]. However, the reported number of cases of marital captivity may grossly underestimate the true number of women experiencing marital captivity as many incidents go unreported owing to a lack of effective documentation, the stigma of victimization in Indian society, and fear of social disorganisation, all of which may inhibit distraught women from soliciting help. The condition of violence committed against women may be traced at its roots to the characteristically patriarchal structure of the family and society at large that fosters the imbalanced power ratio between men and women. The colossal transcendence of women in the work economy of the country since independence has had little effect in eliminating violence against them. There is a case of cruelty by husbands and relatives every nine minutes, and one dowry-death case every 77minutes [3]. Crime against women touched a new high in 2007 with 185312 registered cases of crime against women. The dowry deaths alone totaled at 8093 with 75930 other cases registered under the 498A cases of cruelty by husband or relative against the married women. In a recent study conducted by Family Health Survey it has been found that nearly five crore married women in India suffer from Marital captivity. Just 1 out of 1000 cases of marital captivity case gets reported. And out the 100 cases that are investigated under 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the accused gets conviction only in 2 cases.

The reported cases of marital captivity in India represent only the tip of the iceberg which means vast majority being socially and institutionally invisible4. As the “iceberg” image suggests, recorded or official cases represent only a minimal portion of the problem of family violence in society. The majority of cases of violence fall “below the water line”, invisible both socially and institutionally. In India, this iceberg theory has been reiterated by several studies, research papers and experience of NGOs working for the victims of marital captivity. For example, according to NFHS-3 Study5, which was conducted in 2005-06, where 124,385 women in the age group of 15-49 years were interviewed. Overall, 39% of currently married women age 15-49 have ever experienced any physical or sexual or emotional violence in their current marriage and 27% have experienced the violence in the past 12 months. Thus, among all currently married women who have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence, more than two-thirds (68%) have experienced the violence in the past 12 months and are likely to be still at risk.

In India safe 2000 multi-site study of nearly 10,000 households, 40 percent of the women reported experiencing at least one form of physical abuse and 26 percent reported severe physical abuse, including being hit, kicked, or beaten. UNFPA also reports that 40% of the women in India suffer marital captivity and abuse from male partner. Those that come forward often do so only after abuse have escalated to a point of severe, life-threatening violence. Records from the Special Cell for Women and Children in Mumbai, established by the Police Commission to provide a range of support services to women and their families, revealed that 43 percent of women endured marital captivity for 3-17 years before complaining to police6 (Dave and Solanki 2000). Census 2001 data shows that a total of 2,367,72,617 women are married. according to NFHS -3 data. 81% of currently married women age 15-49 who have ever experienced physical or sexual violence by their current husbands, the first time was within five years of marriage. It also reports that 37% of currently married women aged 15-49yrs have experienced physical or sexual violence, and one in seven of all currently married women, have suffered an injury due to violence by their husbands.

Changing Institution of Marriage in India

Indian marriage systems are going through a major transition due to the impact of globalization on basic social values and institutions. The institution of marriage can be assessed by comparing and contrasting traditional and contemporary marriage patterns. The traditional pattern was marked by prominence of arranged marriages which were primarily oriented towards creating alliances between two families through “classical matchmakers” such as family priests and relatives. In such a marriage there was only a minor role for the bride and bridegroom in the context of decision-making regarding the marriage. Contemporary marriage, however, is based more on an understanding between the aboutto-be-married man and woman along with attention to the views of family elders. New “mediators” such as the media (matrimonial columns) and marriage bureaus have also emerged, contributing to the rise of a nationwide, and sometimes transnational, system of information and choice-making in the context of marriage.

Similarly there is a noticeable shift from an exclusive focus upon the physical attributes of the bride and economic assets of the bridegroom to the intellectual and economic characteristics of the bride and personality-related attributes and career prospects of the bridegroom. Today, we see a slight shift in the way traditional marriages are arranged. The strong presence of the audio, video, and print media, supported by the Internet has influenced the marriage scene tremendously. Open any newspaper on a Sunday and you will see hundreds of advertisements of prospective brides and grooms. Type the word “matrimonial” in any search engine, and see the list of countless websites for Asian marriages, Indian marriages, Hindu marriages, Muslim marriages, and Christian marriages. These matrimonial advertisements may sound amusing to the west, but they are pervasive not only in India but in the entire South Asian region. In earlier times, people tended to live in joint families and it was easier to find the prospective bride or groom from amongst the relatives of the family members. For example the eldest daughterin-law of the house could suggest her maternal aunt’s daughter as a match for her younger brother-in-law. However, as traditional families started breaking up, and people started moving to cities for work, this form of arrangement started to break down. So there was a need for an alternative system of finding the ideal bride or groom. And the print media such as newspapers and magazines came to the rescue. The audiovisual media soon followed. Today, the print media and the Internet provide the easiest and fastest method for finding a suitable partner. The role of “marriage arranger” who used to be a priest or a relative has been taken over by the new media. Marriage Bureaus are popping up like mushrooms. Depending on how much you are willing to pay, they do anything from giving the “right advertisement” in the media, scrutinizing the resumes, sending the selected resumes for your approval, arranging the meeting of the two families, and also undertaking private investigation to check for the character and the details mentioned in the resume of the prospective candidate. They plan the weddings and take commission as a percentage of the amount spent on the marriage! Needless to say their businesses are booming because they keep themselves updated with the latest trends in the marriage market. A glance at the marriage advertisements confirms that religion, caste and sub-caste continue to dominate as criteria for spousal selection. The advertisements are arranged according to the castes and sub-caste and invite responses from families belonging to the same class or caste. The only change, over time, is in the method by which marriages are arranged, and not in the parameters by which a suitable match is evaluated.

Marriage, Market and Dowry Related Violence

The major influence that has been cast by globalization is an over-exposure to, and increased presence of worldly pleasures and luxury items, which are now essential items of dowry. The markets are flooded with household goods such as refrigerators, televisions, audio systems, DVD players etc. The bride’s family is expected to give the latest model of these branded items as dowry or gifts at the time of marriage. It is an issue of prestige and the status of the family depends upon it. Dowry (and bride price in certain communities) has always had a universal presence in Indian marriage. The list of items in dowry or items given as gifts to the groom’s family has changed over the years according to the market trends. But they are all there in some form. The more educated the boy, the more the demand for dowry and the more lavish the party. The dowry can vary from household items to fancy cars and apartments. The story does not end here. The bride’s family is also expected to throw a lavish and extensive marriage party, which may be preceded by cocktail dinners and Ladies Sangeet (a day when songs of marriage are sung), and the Mehndi Night (where henna is put on the hands and feet of the bride by her friends and relatives). The bride’s family has to spend a huge amount to call the party to sing the marriage songs and the henna could cost anywhere from Rs. 100 (US$2.20) to Rs. 10,000 (US$220) for a hand depending upon the social status and the family’s ability to pay. Beauty parkours would charge anywhere between Rs. 2000 (US$44) and Rs. 20,000 (US$440) for the bridal make-up. There are “month before marriage” beauty packages available that could cost anywhere between Rs. 5,000 (US$110) and Rs. 20,000 (US$440) [4-6].

The bride’s family is also expected to pay for all the rituals that precede the marriage and that happen at the time of marriage. This includes the fee of the priest, the arrangements made for the rituals, and the gifts to be given to the boy’s family and the relatives. Polishing schools are also flourishing, and it is the fashion to attend these schools before marriage. Since most households are large families, where the boy shall be staying with his parents even after marriage, the innovators in the marriage market have started “Training Schools for Prospective Daughters-in-law”, where the girls are being trained on how to get along with their mothersin-law and how to fit exceptionally well into the traditional role of an ideal daughter-in-law. These schools are gaining popularity amongst the middle-class. The India daily soap opera industry is highly influenced by the marriage institution, and barring a few T.V. serials, which have few takers, the entire visual media is dominated by the “Mother-in-law & Daughter-in-law” episodes. These T.V. daily soaps on one hand show the “New Woman”, who is independent, intellectual, and a decision-maker and on the other hand show women as traditional, homemaker, and the ideal daughter-in-law. This new image of women, for which the serial directors are largely responsible, (though they would say that they make films only about what the people want to see), puts them in a double-edged bind. A woman is supposed to work and earn for the family as well as do the household chores with the same vigor and enthusiasm as their non-working mothers-in-law display or used to display. This double jeopardy is a result of the new marriage norms that have been slowly evolving.

The boy looks for a girl who is beautiful, smart, intellectual, and sporty because she has to accompany him at all company dinners and parties and yet she should be traditional because she has to gel with his mother and father and fit into the traditional role. The roles of men are changing, but for women they are causing an excess burden. A look at the marriage advertisements shows that the boys’ families look for a fair, slim, convent-educated, professional girl from a respectable family. Some even hint at the expected dowry. They also want a working girl. In addition to all this, the girl should also be homely and should know cooking and be able to manage the house. Moreover, there is no decrease in the amount of dowry, even if the girl possesses all the desired characteristics. The latest National Crimes Record Bureau data shows that dowry deaths and torture by husband has been increasing. If we include all the marriage related violence, the data shows that there is a consistent increase in cases related to dowry deaths and violence by husband and his family on the bride. Moreover, among all categories of CAW, Cruelty by Husband and Relatives has shown an increase of 20.3 between the years 2006 to 2007. Thus, the globalization and economic power in fact are precipitating marital captivity because there is a greater demand of resources. There is an increasing need of commodities and luxuries.

Institutional Mechanism: Protection of Women from Marital Captivity

This enactment is a big step in the direction of fighting marital captivity against women and goes a long way in protecting the women from violence in a domestic set up. The solution lies in the fact that women empowerment approach to combat violence against women should be well integrated and interwoven into all policies and programs of the governments. Women should be equal partners not only at the public places but should have adequate control of their own resources.

Throughout the meeting, the four-person French Government delegation, three of whom represented baby food companies – supported the contention of the United States, that it was not appropriate to refer to WHO policies.

The UK is one of the few countries that requires products to carry instructions that the product should be mixed with water that has been boiled and left to cool to no less than 70 degrees Celsius. WHO recommends that reconstitution with water at this temperature will kill off the majority of these commonly found bacteria which are heat resistant and thus require high temperatures to inactivate/kill them.”

NOPEvember 2017: Day #01: Army of One (2016)

In my heart, I believe that Nicolas Cage is a good actor. Nicolas Cage is on my phone case. Nicolas Cage is in movies you’ve had vividly described to you by friends. There is no mistaking Nicolas Cage for any other.

Army of One, directed by veteran comedy string-puller Larry Charles, is not a good Nicolas Cage movie. Mostly because it feels like it’s trying so hard to be a movie about an unhinged Nicolas Cage performance. In fact, this film may be better consumed by a friend dramatically retelling the plot.

One of the reasons the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man was so astonishingly puzzling and inadvertently silly was the tone. In an attempt to make a horror film, here was this brash and misguided hurricane of emotion throwing fits in nearly every scene. It was as if a man dressed as Spock suddenly started dropping renaissance fair attendees with the Vulcan nerve pinch.

Army of Me tips its hand right away. And then it keeps asking you if it has good cards. We’re introduced to Gary Faulkner (Cage) with a superfluous phoned-in voice-over, clearly aping Ron Howard’s performance in Arrested Development. As we’re introduced to Faulkner, he is soaring through the Pakistani skies on an American flag hang glider in an Evel Knievel jumpsuit wielding a katana blade with his boombox blasting beneath him.

The screen shot felt completely necessary. Because describing this opening is as mentally daunting as it is imagining. But rest assured, reader, this movie is based on a true story. Gary Faulkner is a real person and the events of this film (mostly) actually happened. And there is no short supply of footage of the “Rocky Mountain Rambo” to which one could review, compile and form an objective opinion around. And it would be a far more entertaining film than Army of One. Which begs the question: if the subject matter is alive and not shy around cameras, why not make a documentary? Surely Charles, who previously sat in the director’s chair for mockumentary Borat, could have joined Faulkner on a leg of his journey and let the subject just be himself. Instead, we get Nicolas Cage doing an impression of Gary Faulkner acting like Gary Faulkner is secretly Nicolas Cage.

The first forty five minutes of the film take place in Colorado, where Gary works as a handyman who likes to visit hardware stores and spew nationalistic vitriol about non-American toilets. His presence feels like The Big Lebowski’s The Dude had his mind jacked by his veteran friend Walter Sobchak. Gary’s drinking buddies (Paul Scheer and Will Sasso) seem to tolerate his antics, possibly for the enjoyment of watching the rest of the world interact with him. This raises an issue in the casting. Paul Scheer is the host of the excellent bad movie podcast, How Did This Get Made?, who have reviewed a number of Nicolas Cage’s movies. In the show’s mini-episodes, Paul will question if the movie his panel has just reviewed would be better if it starred Nicolas Cage. So his presence in this movie is a long, exaggerated wink to the camera. And since this film feels like 90-minutes of “this friggin’ clown, huh?” moments, it adds another layer of (hopefully unintentional) self-awareness to the proceedings.

The first half of Army of One moves much slower as any time we’re introduced to a new character, they are treated to the synopsis of this film. While watching the news in a bar, Faulkner brags about how he could take out Osama Bin Laden. Then, after we learn that Gary is on dialysis, he is visited by God (Russell Brand), who also treats him to the synopsis of this film. Police officers, airline employees, doctors, etc. all get a close-up of their mugging when Gary rattles off his explanation for his eccentric behaviour. Most of the dialogue is redundant. If you open Showgirls in a media player and randomly select a scene, you’re typically within five minutes of nudity. The same applies for Army of One, but instead of Jessie Spano’s areola, it’s another impassioned speech about getting Bin Laden.

Early in the story, Gary reconnects with his old crush, Marci Mitchell (Wendi McLendon-Covey), who he claims to have masturbated to during his youth. He treats her to the synopsis of this film and she politely supports him in a non-patronizing manor. Their relationship results in one of the few endearing qualities to Army Of One.

Gary’s relationship with Marci’s daughter, Lizzie (Chenoa Morison), gives us a glimpse at what could have been a much better movie. Lizzie is described as having “challenges”, she requires a wheelchair and does not speak. So, Gary pretends to have a psychic connection with her. He and his drinking buddies rebuild her ramp. And when his crusade yields disappointing results, he brings her tchotchkes and souvenirs from his travels. Another argument for a Gary Faulkner documentary could be made just to flesh out the dimensions of his character. Besides Lizzie and Marci, few cast members are given the screen time or opportunity to do much other than react to Faulkner/Cage’s presence. Because Cage’s performance is so exaggerated, it’s difficult to really get a grip on who anybody else around him is and why they endure his eccentricities. Everyone is tertiary to the degree that they are basically props and set pieces for our protagonist to socially trip over. Talking head segments could have told this story in a much more efficient and endearing way.

After attempting to boat, hang glide and board a plane with a katana blade he purchased from a home shopping channel, Gary finally makes to the second half of the film. To our dismay, it is set in Pakistan, where Gary believes Osama Bin Laden is hiding. The story circles the drain as Faulkner stumbles around smoking hash with his sword under his arm. Two federal agents (Denis O’Hare and Rainn Wilson) provide clumsy exposition between clearly ad-libbed one-liners. Stories begin to circulate about a mysterious American samurai who is hunting Bin Laden. The lack of dialysis causes Faulkner to become paranoid and he hallucinates meetings with God and sword-fighting Bin Laden before he is apprehended and shipped home.

At this point, we learn that Gary’s story has gone viral and he winds up being booked on shows like The Late Show with David Letterman, The View and Fox & Friends. There is actual footage of these appearances linked in that last sentence. If you feel like taking a hard pass on this film, these clips should suffice. Some of them are equally as mean-spirited as the Army of One. But at least there isn’t a played-for-laughs imitation of Faulkner pratfalling around the set.

There is a 51-minute documentary by somebody named Paul Johnson about Gary Faulkner. The artwork on its DVD case indicates it may get a future NOPEvember viewing. A cursory glance at the YouTube comments to most footage of Faulkner is a real sad peek into 2017 America. People will either praise him as some kind of patriotic folk hero or a delusional nutcase. Eccentric and controversial as he is, Faulkner’s story could have been a salvageable narrative in the right hands. It didn’t have to be a meandering and humourless farce with an infamous over-actor chewing the scenery. Maybe this is how he wanted his story told? Maybe Faulkner felt most compelled to let this retelling become his legacy? Maybe Gary Faulkner is far too preoccupied with his self-imposed quest to worry about these details?

The bottom line is, Army of One is not the comedy it claimed to be. It did not handle its subject matter in a compelling way. There were few-to-little laughs. There weren’t really any performances that didn’t seem like candid reactions to Cage’s presence. And the whole thing just felt like an exploitative way to create a red state Don Quixote. NOPE!

Pakistan has seen various smartphone makers in recent years including Xiaomi which launched a few handsets in the country earlier this year. Besides the major players like Samsung and Huawei in Pakistan, there is OPPO which has also settled quite well in the country. But there also some brands like Infinix which came only a couple of years ago and has attracted consumers. A similar brand which has settled in other emerging markets, Tecno Mobile entered into Pakistan market only a few months ago with a little range of their devices.

The brand continued to bring more models in the market including WX3 and WX4 Pro more recently. Among those models, there was a duo of camera centric lower mid-range smartphones – Camon CX and Camon CX Air. Both the siblings are pretty much similar in design with metal body but like the name suggests, Air is a lighter one. Not in the sense of weight but with regards to the specifications.

Features

The Camon CX costs PKR 20,999/- in Pakistan and comes with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It’s powered by MediaTek chipset, MT6750T with an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The CX features a 5.5-inch large IPS display and serves with full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. It’s makes the pixel density of around 400ppi which sure is good. The display also features a 2.5D curved glass.

Running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, Tecno Mobile brings its own skin on top – HiOS version 2.0 which seems to have notable features but over exaggerated as well. Having the focus on camera, the Camon CX features both the front and rear cameras with 16MP image sensor. On the back it’s phase detect autofocus (PDAF) – the Sony IMX298 with the support of four-LED flash. While on the front there’s fixed focus lens with dual-flash. But how does these flash perform, we’ll now later in the review below.

Camon CX Design, Build and Display

With the first impressions, the Camon CX feels compact in hands. Its metal build is also nicely finished but it’s prone to slip as well. Handling was not quite secure – may be due to the slimmer profile and not so matte finish, even when it is. It weighs only 166 grams as well as feels much lighter in carrying.

You can get Camon CX in four colors including grey, rose golden, golden, and blue. The one we have here for review, is the grey one, and it’s nice.

Fully metal back side slightly curves into the flat sides and then chamfered edges to join the front glass. As usual there’s a plastic bezel between the body and the front glass. There simply two antenna stripes on top and bottom. The main camera cuts the top stripe and resides on a corner with a ring-flash containing four LED flash.

Fingerprint scanner is also down there in pretty much in reach of your index finger. It’s always the best place for a fingerprint scanner that I prefer to have – more than the one on front-bottom. However the one on the Camon CX was rather less impressive. It’s almost flattened to the back panel with only a minor intrusion which didn’t attract me at all.

The bottom portion of the back panel only prints some product labels while brand name “TECNO” is laser printed right below the fingerprint scanner.

When talking about other components, standard 3.5mm audio jack is sported on the top side. The bottom of the phone hosts a microUSB port, a speaker and a mic.

Camon CX System and Battery Performance

The battery on the other hand is 3200 mAh which is support some kind of fast charging but only with the bundled charger. Zero to full charge could take up to 3 hours easily which is better than most non-fast charging packages in this price range. Battery serving timing is also not that bad which also comes with ultra power saving option in case you want some urgent time with more basic phone functions.

Performance wise, Camon CX was good mostly, apps were quick and snappy as well as the games we tried on it were also fine to play – be it Subway Surfer, NFS No Limit, Extreme Asphalt, Modern Combat or Mortal Kombat. Camon CX Camera

Camera Quality

Camon CX produces good images overall but when noticing key elements, highlight clipping often a problem. Dynamic range is not that good as well as the HDR function didn’t bring a shot closer to some natural looking. Noise is not present in most cases, but image detail is also sacrificed which can be easily noticed on distant trees with messed up leaves with. Color reproduction is more towards natural tones with no over saturation as well as focus locking is quite good.

Noise is handled well in low-light shots as well. Accurate focus is the second impressive factor of this camera. The missing part is of course the image detail.

Camon CX Conclusion & Verdict

Tecno smartphones were launched recently in Pakistan as we noted other likely brands above including Infinix. Although Infinix has setup their retail outlets in only a few major cities, most of their sale is via online-retail. In addition the smartphones under the Infinix brand do not cross its boundary of lower-mid price range. However Tecno has some broad range of price categories, the latest launch from the company was the upper mid-range flagship Phantom 8. The brand is also more focused on physical retail outlets than the online-sale. The phone we are talking about here costs only Rs. 21,000/- It’s really a contender among the its price range.

Camon CX is good with this price specially with the combo of a not-bad processor and a 3GB RAM. But I’d only recommend this phone if you the 16GB internal storage does not bother you, which is very unlikely in today’s date. Other features of the phone aren’t that much different from other brand’s offerings. 16MP camera on the front is also worth noticing but it only produces large pictures with almost same quality as usually we see.

My opinion to the brand is that, when there’s a variant available with a 32GB storage, you must bring in. A thousand or two in the price won’t make a difference when the phone has something to support consumer’s need.

As her consultant, I am working with her to develop both areas so that she can be more effective as a leader. When I refer to technological knowledge what I am referring to is having technological awareness, and function- not becoming a tech expert!

Leaders seeking to achieve mastery who are more technologically savvy choose to spend the time required to develop their people skills in addition to the time spent on continually developing their technological knowledge and awareness.

Recently I was presenting for a major multinational technology group in Orlando Florida and when I present

I give out my cell number so that my audience can text me while I speak and ask me questions. This really works well because the questions are anonymous (unless they want to self-identify) and I can answer them while going through the content of my presentation. One of the questions I was asked while talking about the need for tech professionals to improve their people skills side of leadership was, “how do I get my team members to just stop all of their politickings and focus on the work?” I texted the leader back to ask if it was okay to openly announce the question and address it as a benefit to the group. He said yes and so I asked a question back, “do you have regular team update meetings either in person or by Skype?” the leader answered, ‘no’ and then I asked, “do you openly share what is happening with your team so that they have the latest information first hand?” and he answered, “no”.

People don’t leave their jobs – they leave their leaders – a harsh reality and one you have likely experienced as an employee yourself and as a leader.

The reason I wanted this to be discussed to the entire group is that in this scenario the leader was focused purely on his tech savvy skills and was not employing any people savvy skills at all and there were many others similar to him in the audience. The person who texted the question had the courage to self-identify to the group and we worked through how he can get his team to stop politicking and focus on the work, the ideas presented to him were:

#1- Have a team meeting (virtual or in person) on a regular basis (weekly if possible) to address what the goals are for the upcoming week, who is doing what and the latest news from your boss and the company.

As a leader, you have to ask yourself if you are willing to help people succeed, to grow people and ultimately to focus the time and energy to be a great leader. As the workplace continues to speed up and change it is more important now to focus on both the tech and people side of the business and this means knowing who you are as a leader and adapting to the reality of managing people.
