I work in the south.
It’s a very red state and sometimes it shows. Yesterday a pt came into the ER wearing a Trump 2020 hat. One of our techs (who happens to be black) came in to the room to help out and the pt took off his hat and straight up said “sir if my hat offends you I’m happy to take it off”
Which straight up says to me- so you know this person is racist, and your gonna vote for and support them anyway?
Same shift I had another pt who was talking to me about how much he would appreciate if weed was recreationally legal all over the country. I told him about how oh I’m from Colorado and how the states makes good money for education from the taxes on it. And without skipping a beat this man told me “oh yeah we could pay for the wall with the money from weed in a month”
And I decided maybe i shouldn’t talk to anyone else that day.

Never is this appropriate. See below.. Subscribe to keep learning!: https://www.youtube.com/NurseStefan?sub_confirmation=1 ...but with the infant mortality rate higher in the United States than some developing countries, now is especially not the time to play games like this. This video is addressing a Bingo "game" that was purportedly crafted up by an labor and delivery nurse during their downtime, and posted online, inevitably to be shared with the world. What you do on your own time is your own business, but what you post to the internet has the risk of being publicly shared, and with the comments that wind up generalizing all nurses into a category of people that jive with this train of thought.. I can't help but let the general population know that this is not what respectable health professionals stand for. Whether it's labor & delivery, the emergency department, intensive care unit, or any other nursing department.. this type of behavior cannot be tolerated. As nurses, we should be advocating for, encouraging to, and supporting towards our patients. This... this is just the opposite. My apologies to whoever was offended by this Bingo "game." We all know those personalized Bingo games that get circulated around, right? Well this one is purportedly from a Labor and Delivery unit in a hospital which is, if you didn’t know... where moms go into labor and deliver their babies. let’s take a look at some of the squares where if you had this experience with a patient you could win big. now some of them are pretty innocuous and harmless, right? like, um, FREE SPACE. No, but things like "dad passed out" or "jewelry in nether regions," whatever but then even as someone who has never worked in Labor & Delivery I can notice a theme here and tell me if you agree. "Oh, I'm a hard stick" Meaning that they're tough to start an IV on or draw blood from "afraid of needles" but covered in tattoos "ate before scheduled c section" "pain levels a 10 while asking for food, texting, and smiling" These are all things that could make staff roll their eyes and sometimes with what they think is good reason... "oh, you’re a hard stick? says who? your neighborhood clinic?" "I’m a pro, watch how it's done." "how’s someone afraid of needles if they're all tattooed up?" "how's someone's pain level a 10 if they're asking for food, texting, and smiling?" "why would someone eat, if they know they're going in for a surgical procedure like a c-section?" you can roll your eyes to any of that but just to address those ones if your patient tells you they’re a hard stick, that doesn’t mean it’s your time to shine. they're not setting you up for a challenge they're setting you up for success by telling you to grab your best iv nurse or your ultrasound machine because they've been through hell having holes poked through their body, too many times number two: you have no idea what has happened in that person’s life since they got that tattoo and now or during the process of getting that tattoo or maybe it's not the tattooing needles that bother them but the ones that remind them of their mom shooting up that do, ok? could be, who knows? not you. ... 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛 for more! ************* #NursePride #CultureOfHealth #NurseStefan by Nurse Stefan

Dear Senator,
I’ve done a lot of things as a nurse, I’ve worked in 3 different specialties and been very lucky to learn as much as I have.
I’ve held hands of the dying and their families, I’ve been involved with countless codes (2 more memorable ones were done on the floor), I’ve assisted doctors in procedures and answered questions to the best of my ability for both the patients and their family members, I’ve spent hours at a time on the phone with family members making sure they understand what’s going on and passing on messages of hope and love to patients from those families. I’ve wiped sweat, blood and tears off of faces I’ve just met. I’ve cried with you and felt pain and loss.
Tumblr media
I’ve also been hit, kicked and called every name in the book. I’ve been told I’m a bully, a horrible person and that people hope I die and suffer, all while just trying to do my job.
I can’t say I’ve ever played cards on the job.
It’s a hard rewarding job. There is no feeling like watching someone defeat death. To watch them get better and see the joy on their families faces. It must be to worth it to be as belittled and abused as our profession is, somehow we keep at it. Keeping people alive.

Today my sister and I went and ran the #donordash As an ICU nurse I see the donor process and the grief of one family’s loss. But today was magical because I got to see the other side. I got to see all the families who are bound together by this process. To see people running in honor of siblings, parents and friends. Proud to be a part of the process and a witness to the love that holds these people together. #donoralliance #icunurses #nursepride #bethechange (at WashPark)
