Royal Visit Boosts Youth and Nature in South Africa
Tumblr media
Bridging Nations Through Conservation and Youth Empowerment
His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, embarked on a significant two-day visit to South Africa on January 22-23, 2024, marking the first such visit since President Cyril Ramaphosa's state visit to the UK. This visit, rich in symbolism and substance, underscores the UK and South Africa's shared commitment to youth empowerment and environmental conservation.   Exploring Biodiversity at Pretoria's Botanical Garden The Duke’s tour of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, alongside South Africa’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Ms. Barbara Creecy, and SANBI CEO, Mr. Shonisani Munzhedi, was undoubtedly a highlight. Significantly, this visit underlined the collaboration between the Royal Botanical Garden, Kew, and SANBI, aiming to preserve South Africa’s rich plant diversity. Moreover, it served as a testament to the enduring partnership between the UK and South Africa in biodiversity conservation.   Engagement with the President's Award Recipients Significantly, Prince Edward's interaction with the awardees of the President's Award, the international arm of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, stood out during the visit. His meaningful engagement at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Pretoria with the Gold Award winners not only showcased but also reinforced the UK's and South Africa's robust commitment to nurturing the potential of young individuals. Furthermore, the Duke's discussions with these young achievers about their contributions to society served as a powerful highlight. This dialogue underscored the program’s profound impact in fostering leadership and community service, illustrating the transformative effect such initiatives can have on youth and society at large.   Celebrating 41 Years of Youth Development 2024 marks the 41st anniversary of the President’s Award in South Africa, a program supporting approximately 3,000 young South Africans annually. Since its inception in 2011, over 65,000 participants have benefited from the program, which continues to be a beacon of youth empowerment and community development.   Strengthening Science and Education Ties The reception with Dr. Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, celebrated the launch of the UK’s new International Science Partnership Fund. This initiative is a significant step in reinforcing the academic and scientific relationship between the UK and South Africa, further demonstrating their shared values and mutual interests in education and research.   A Legacy of Collaboration and Mutual Growth HRH Prince Edward's visit to South Africa not only represents the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations but also signifies a future of collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges. From youth development to environmental conservation, this visit paves the way for continued cooperation and mutual growth, underlining the shared values and commitments of the UK and South Africa.   Sources: THX News, British High Commission Pretoria, SABC News, & The Royal Family's official website. Today was the Graduation Ceremony for TEE College. It was a very special occasion for the 125 persons who graduated with Degrees, Diplomas and Higher Certificates on Theology. It was the first ‘in person’ graduation since 2019, because of Covid. The speaker at the graduation was Rev Phumla Nzimande, Presiding Bishop Elect of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and director of EMMU.
.
As the Chair of the Board I had the privilege of constituting the Graduation Ceremony. Here are the opening remarks that I shared with the graduates, our guests and staff:
.
Prof. Dion A. Forster, Chairman of the Board of TEE College.
By the power vested in me as the Chairman of the Board, I hereby constitute this congregation of TEE College to confer the Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates, with all of the rights and privileges associated with them to the candidates who will be presented to us today, and all those whose names appear in the program who will receive their qualifications in abstentia.
Please take your seats.
Graduates, honoured guests, stakeholders and staff of the Theological Education by Extension College, I greet you in the wonderful and glorious name of Jesus our Lord! Friends, welcome to this day of celebration and joy! It is truly wonderful to be able to celebrate the awarding of your qualifications today. Thank you for your hard work and commitment - all of you have shown great determination and grit to achieve this magnificent milestone, and we trust that your learning will be a great gift to you in your life and ministry, and that through you it will be a gift to your community and the world.
We celebrate you today! Please, let’s give a hand to all of our graduates!
Of course, we are mindful that your achievements are not solitary pursuits. As African Christians we know that we must acknowledge and thank God for God’s faithfulness and care over these years. In addition, we know that all qualifications are gained through the sacrifice of time and resources from family and friends. So, today we also want to thank the spouses, children, parents, siblings, and communities that supported you in prayer, encouragement, and financially to achieve your success! Can I please ask the parents, children, family and friends of our graduates to stand? Graduates, please can you turn to your loved ones and give them a round of applause?
Finally, we want to acknowledge the staff and stakeholders of the TEE college. This college is a unique institution of Higher Learning. We were started in 1976 at a time in South Africa’s history when many of our siblings were excluded from high quality, contextual, accredited theological education. Our first Chairman was Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and he had to leave the very first Council meeting of TEE College on 18 June 1976 to attend to young people and their families who faced the brutality of the apartheid state as they gunned down students in what has become known as the Soweto Uprising.
This college has been faithfully fulfilling its duty to offer quality, contextual and affordable education to women and men for the last 47 years! Among our graduates are Bishops, Moderators, University Professors, Leaders in governments and business. There are faithful clergy, parents, and community workers - a great cloud of witnesses that you join. Thousands of people have followed this path, and have spent their lives in service of justice, healing, hope, and transformation.
What makes TEE College so special is that we are the only truly ecumenical, not for profit, theological college in South Africa. We also happen to be numerically the largest undergraduate theological institution in South Africa. We were founded by the Churches, for the people, and we remain committed to faithfully discharging that responsibility with excellence!
Our mission is: To equip people for Christian service through accessible, contextual, and ecumenical theological education by extension’
This would not be possible without the sacrificial work, attention to excellence, and care of our TEE staff. Can I please ask the full time and part time staff of the college, and the members of the board to stand? Friends, please let’s express our appreciation to them by giving them a warm round of applause.

Enhle Mbali Unveils Her Newest Fashion Collection
Tumblr media
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa has a strong presence in the fashion industry. She is the founder of the fashion label “SE Preggoz,” which focuses on maternity wear. Her designs have been showcased at various fashion events. In 2019, Enhle Mbali established her business, ‘Essie Apparel’ (a fashion-forward fusion signature that uses sculptural detail and the clever use of colour application) and debuted her first collection during SA Fashion Week, a regional fashion event. This year in September, Mlotshwa debuted her spring-summer collection at Zurich Fashion Week in Switzerland.
There’s no stopping Enhle and she is prove that anything is possible. Last weekend, the sexy actor and designer hosted her very own stand alone fashion show where she unveiled her newest collection called The Freedom Collection at the historic Apartheid Museum at Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City.
“This past weekend I hosted my first stand alone fashion show. As you saw my stories feed was buzzing. This week I’ll let you in on all the festivities. Starting with my favourite moment at the end of the show when @kwa_mammkhize brought a well sized bottle of @moetchandon to celebrate the shows success.🤍🤍 The crowd had got up from their seat in celebration and the models were well in dance mode had to move from the crowd and cameras or it was gonna be a wet mess 😂 #simplywork #simplylove #EmpressEnhle @essie_apparel #TheFreedomCollection“- the proud mother of two shared on Instagram.
Tumblr media
It was indeed a successful event attended by media personalities and actors who came in support of Mlotshwa’s latest fashion offering. Tino Chinyani, Simphiwe Ngema, Mome Mahlangu, Norma Mngoma, Naledi “Leddi” Radebe, Rami Chuene, Holly Rey, Slikour, Ayanda Nzimande, and Ma Nala were among those A-list celebrities.
After her hard work over the weekend, Enhle came back home to a sweet surprise from her sons, who did something special to congratulate mommy on her massive success.
So Sweet!
“The boys (my AA Batteries) after the @essie_apparel show…. Sweetest gesture. Melted my heart. The stuff that really matters 🥰☺️ #EmpressEnhle“- she wrote.
We absolutely love this for her! Well done, mommy!

Tumblr media
Boosting Research Collaboration to Tackle Global Challenges
A New Era of UK-SA Research Collaboration The UK has announced a significant investment of up to R1 billion (£50 million) in the International Science Partnership Fund to enhance UK-South Africa science and research collaboration. Announced by the British High Commissioner in Pretoria, this funding marks a new chapter in joint efforts to address pressing global challenges through scientific innovation.   A Reception of High Esteem The announcement was made at a reception attended by notable figures including Minister of Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, and His Royal Highness Prince Edward The Duke of Edinburgh. This event underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing scientific research and development.   Minister Nzimande's Endorsement Emphasizing the significance of the partnership, Minister Nzimande expressed South Africa’s enthusiasm for the Fund. He highlighted the importance of co-ownership and co-responsibility in ensuring alignment with national priorities, especially in projects like the Square Kilometre Array Observatory for radio astronomy in Africa.   UK High Commissioner's Vision UK High Commissioner Antony Phillipson stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts in science, research, and innovation to make rapid progress against global challenges like climate change. He praised the existing partnership with South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation, looking forward to amplifying the impact of these science partnerships.   Decades of Joint Efforts UK and South African researchers have long collaborated on projects addressing global issues, such as developing weather warning systems. These systems provide vital information to South African communities, safeguarding lives and livelihoods.   Investment Focus Areas The new investment aims to further strengthen UK and South Africa's research partnerships. Key focus areas include: - Addressing non-communicable diseases by connecting medical experts. - Tackling unemployment and fostering economic growth through nurturing young researchers. - Facilitating partnerships in sustainable development goals. - Enhancing understanding and responses to climate change impacts. - Supporting robust research and innovation systems for economic development.   Enhancing Science and Technology Partnerships The partnership extends beyond research to include initiatives like the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Transforming Systems through Partnerships program and the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships, working with South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency. These programs aim to catalyze partnerships and drive innovation in critical sectors.   Commitment to Long-term Collaboration Reflecting a strong, ongoing partnership, the UK and South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the State Visit in November 2022. This agreement promises further collaboration in emerging technologies, health, oceans, climate, energy, and space sectors.   A Pledge for Future Prosperity This new funding from the UK consolidates its commitment to working in partnership with South Africa. Furthermore, it aims to deliver on mutually agreed priorities and address challenges at global, regional, and local levels. This collaborative effort is aimed at fostering a future of shared prosperity and scientific advancement, strengthening the bonds between the two nations.   Sources: THX News & British High Commission Pretoria.
