Improved Highlight Recovery: The improved highlights slider is both stronger and more natural looking.

Batch Adjustments with Brilliance AI: Use Brilliance AI in Browse with the new pane located on the right side. You can add it to a selection of photos all at once. The settings dialogs now work correctly with Brilliance AI as well, for copy/paste/sync.

Add Text Layers: The Text tool is moving to a new layer type. You will see each text block as a layer in the layers stack. They behave like a normal layer where you can now mask, blend, and use filters on them. You will also be able to create luminosity masks with them soon. You can also rotate them.

Paste Pixels: Now, you will be able to paste pixels from other apps as new layers into Photo RAW. This can be the path to a supported file or pixel selection in an editor like Photoshop.

Access DCP Files: Develop can now use Adobe DCP format camera profiles in addition to ICC profiles. It will scan the default Adobe install location and display them in the profile list. Note you can’t import your own DCP files at this time.

Photo RAW 2024 also adds support for a host of new cameras and lenses.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 Adds New Workflow and Powerful Features

ON1 has announced Photo RAW 2019, a major upgrade to the photo editing software that brings a new workflow and a host of new features.

“ON1 Photo RAW 2019 will give photographers the features they use the most from the Lightroom and Photoshop worlds in a single application,” ON1 Products VP Dan Harlacher says. “This is what we mean by an all ­new photo editing experience. We want to keep the photographer’s workflow fast and efficient.”

To help Lightroom users switch over more seamlessly, Photo RAW 2019 uses AI algorithms to transfer and display photos that have been edited inside Lightroom. The migrated settings will continue to be non-destructive and can be further edited inside Photo RAW 2019.

After crowdsourcing ideas for its original launch of Photo RAW, ON1 is continuing to build the software around direct input from photographers.

“Every new feature and improvement made in version 2019 is a direct result of community input through the ON1 Photo RAW Project,” the company says.

Here’s a rundown of the other new features found in Photo RAW 2019:

A New Workflow for Layers

“ON1 Layers will no longer be a separate module. Instead, the power of layers will be accessible within the non­destructive workflow inside of Develop and Effects. Building An AI Adaptive Preset

To build an adaptive preset, create your look and leverage the Mask AI technology to target adjustments to recognizable elements. Things like People, Animals, Architecture, Sky, Mountains, or Flora. If Mask AI can categorize it as a maskable object, you can build an AI Adaptive Preset around it.

AI Adaptive Prests shine when photos have clear, recognizable subject and elements. You have two steps to create an adaptive preset:

Build up your look using the Effects filters and Local Adjustments. As you apply each filter and adjustment, use Mask AI to target specific maskable objects. In the example in this article, I applied two filters for People.

Save your settings as a new mask with Settings > Save Settings As Preset. Make sure to expand Effects and/or Local Adjustments and check the Apply Masks button.

Pro tip: You can also invert masks created by Mask AI.

Applying An AI Adaptive Preset

Applying an adaptive preset to another photo is no different than any other preset. Select the photo you want to edit, open the preset browser, and choose the preset to apply. The AI Adaptive Preset will apply the appropriate adjustments to the elements in your image.

What About Landscape Photos? Do AI Adaptive Presets Work?

Yes, AI Adaptive Presets work with landscapes. Landscapes that have stronger, recognizable features work very well. Photos of mountains, large rocks, forests, fields, etc. all work wonderfully.

For more chaotic landscapes, such as a very busy forest or seascapes where land and ocean intermix, there is less precision in the AI masks and the adaptive presets may need more adjustments.

For example, in my seascape work, I supplement Mask AI with luminosity masks and color range masks. Those masks are also adaptive and are generated based on the image being edited, not the image used to create the preset.

Pro tip: Luminosity and Color Range masks are adaptive, too!

Conclusion

Keywords are powerful because they let you find your photos quickly. However, tagging your photos with keywords is laborious, and because of this photographers often don’t bother with keywords. Keyword AI does the tedious tagging work and you reap the benefits of search.

Keyword AI Automatically Tags Your Photos

Keyword AI is a new feature in ON1 Photo RAW 2023 that automatically scans your cataloged folders of images and adds keywords. The AI smarts detect all sorts of objects, from people to bodies of water to buildings to modes of transportation … the list goes on and on. Keyword AI is just that simple - set and forget. In the example here, not only did Keyword AI recognize natural elements in this landscape, it also recognized a person in the scene, dressed warmly against the elements, and added keywords for outwear and shoes. Impressive!

Using Keyword AI is insanely simple - set and forget. You do have control over what types of things Keyword AI will look and consider when adding keywords for in the ON1 Preferences, and you can turn off the feature if you prefer.

GPS coordinates

Properties of the photo, including the type of processing applied to the image (ex: monochrome vs. color)

Histogram properties, like underexposed, overexposed, high contrast, etc.

People and faces

Estimate ages of people (ex: children vs. adult)

Estimate gender (disabled by default)

Objects and regions, all sorts of elements, objects, and structures that the AI can detect.

Folder Names, consider the folder path as a hint or input to the AI

Finally, if you are a Cloud Sync user (formerly known as ON1 360), you can have the Keyword AI results shared across your devices through the cloud.

After Keyword AI has added tags to your images, you can search in ON1 Browse across those keywords. For quick searches, use the search box in the Filter at the bottom of the Browse window. You can also tap into Keyword AI data in the Advanced Search options.

Keyword AI Augments Traditional Keywords

You might be a photographer that already uses keywords and you have a carefully curated set of keywords. Will Keyword AI mess that up? Absolutely not. Tags added by Keyword AI are kept in a separate area in the metadata panel, the AI Keywords area. You have the option to add them to the traditional Keywords metadata (the IPTC keywords), and you can add some or all of the AI-powered keywords.

This is quite useful for stock image photographers that don’t like keywording. Let Keyword AI do the tagging for you, then click the Add All button to promote the keywords to the IPTC metadata area. When you export your photos and upload them to a stock agency or online, those keywords are searchable by other applications.

Keyword Strengths, Areas For Improvement, And A Delightful Surprise

There are some areas and some photos where Keyword AI is at its best. Strengths of Keyword AI are:

Keywords from GPS coordinates

Photos with a clear, prominent subject

Photos with people

Tonal and color characteristics

Areas where Keyword AI can improve are:

Finding and tagging secondary subjects

Detecting reflections

Crisper descriptions of bodies of water (ex: river vs. ocean)

And a delightful surprise in Keyword AI is multi-lingual keywords. Looking at the keywords from a photo I captured in Japan, one keyword with Kanji was automatically added. I am hoping that extends to a broader set of languages.

Keyword AI Tags Per Photo And Per Version

It is also worth noting that Keyword AI adds keywords for every photo and every version of a photo in your cataloged folders. Returning to the photo of the bicycle, I created a black and white version of the image. Notice the AI Keywords sections are different. The black and white treatment has a “Monochrome” AI keyword added. That’s a great attention to detail by ON1 and a very important one. Later down the line, when I’m looking for monochrome images, I want this bicycle to be found in my search.

There you have it! Keyword AI in Photo RAW 2023 is going to make your keyword tagging life easier. It does its work in the background. And you have the choice to add the AI Keywords to your traditional IPTC keywords (or not!) for photo exports to clients, search engines, and stock agencies.

ON1 Photo RAW Or Luminar? Or Both?

I have been getting a lot of questions about Photo RAW and Luminar. Which one should I use? Is one “better” than another? As with most things in photography, the right choice is very dependent on your individual needs. What do I do? I use both ON1 Photo RAW and Luminar as plug-ins to Lightroom. I like each tool for different reasons and both have a place in my workflow.

In this video, I compare the programs in a variety of areas including post processing, asset management, masking, retouching, and printing. My goal with this video is to give you enough information so you can decide which if ON1 Photo RAW or Luminar - or both - are tools you want to use. 

A few key points and Photo RAW and Luminar:

You can make wonderful photos in both programs. The approach of each is different. One may resonate more with your style of editing than the other. Luminar’s approach is clearly AI-centered, fewer filters & sliders, with the AI engines doing more for you. Photo RAW is more “traditional”. There is AI to leverage for tonality adjustments and from there you build up your own look by adding specialty filters.

Both Photo RAW and Luminar have folder-based asset management, albums, star ratings, and color labels. Photo RAW offers more control over assigning metadata (keywords, IPTC) and metadata-based filtering/searching.

Masking and retouch tools are available in both. Photo RAW’s tools, both masking and retouching, are stronger than Luminar.

Printing support is stronger in Photo RAW, including soft proofing and a proper print module. Luminar uses whatever print support Windows or macOS provides to all applications.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 - Good Stuff Is Coming!

I got a sneak peek at Photo RAW 2019 a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been itching to talk about some of the new features. The 3 features I’m most excited about:

New Layers Workflow: Layers folds inside of Develop and Effects and is totally non-destructive. This opens up a much more fluid workflow with more powerful texture blending, preset stacking, and exposure blending, all within the Develop/Effects module. Check out the video for more.

Focus Stacking & Align Layers: I’m lumping these two together. I’ve been waiting for layer alignment for a long time - and it’s finally here!! Focus stacking is an even bigger bonus. That’s one less reason I have to pop into Photoshop now.

Improved Local Adjustments: My processing style usually calls for several local adjustments. In Photo RAW 2019, the local adjustments work directly with the data from your RAW photo. In prior versions, local adjustments are applied last, after the RAW photo is filtered through Develop and Effects filters. Translation - better highlight and shadow results.

I know a lot of folks are going to appreciate the Lightroom Migration Tool as well. And I’m also eager for the AI Masking Tool. Remember the Quick Mask in the Layers module? It worked a good portion of the time, although it would glitch from time to time. The AI Masking Tool is an vast overhaul of that feature. I’m glad to see that technology poised to make a strong comeback.

New Auto­Align Layers – Easily combine multiple photos as layers, then automatically align them based on image content, making it easy to mask and blend them together.

New AI Masking Tool (coming in December) – This new tool, powered by AI, will allow customers to easily identify areas of your photo to create a selection or mask and the AI technology detects your subject matter and automatically creates a beautiful mask.

New Portrait Module – The new Portrait module will automatically detect faces in your photo allowing you to easily retouch, smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes, and whiten teeth.
