In acknowledgement of Tumblr fixing the latest glitch quick smart, a personal hierarchy of app colour schemes. From hated to liked.

5. Light mode. Feels like every colour visible to man and then some have gathered together for the sole purpose of burning out my retina. There is no dimness setting that can fix this.

4. Dark mode. I can see it, but i feel like I'm straining my eyes. Used across all apps that have it as an option, but only because it's the lesser of two evils. Side effects include less likely to keep me up but confuses the auto backlight adjuster.

3. A tie between Discord and Tumblr. Discord's dark mode is lighter than most and the occasional colour helps break it up. Tumblr's low-contrast blue background is superior, but it loses points because of how easily the light creeps in. The pink shoelace ad isn't too bad, but the yellow pukuchu guy is an eyesore; not to mention user posts or the "video could not be loaded" placeholder.

2. The app i use for reading downloaded fic. Customisable background and font, including images. Currently the background is a deep blue nebula-adjacent, set up for night reading.

1. Ao3. Two words: Custom. Skins. If i want a royal purple background, i can have a royal purple background. If i wanted a pink background that is a perfect light-dark inversion of that royal purple, i can have that instead. In fact, i have both - depending on what size screen I'm logged in on. Perfection.

Honourable mention. Musicolet. Mostly dark mode, but the notification and now playing screen pick a colour based on the album art of the song playing.

App developers, please stop making me pick between high contrast light mode and high contrast dark mode. End the light-dark dichotomy.

Here's a little prologue! Hope you enjoy the backstory of this clan! I'm pretty proud of it, honestly.

Because there's a pretty low contrast on the text in some of these panels, I've written them down under the cut for anyone who's struggling to read it! I've also added some image descriptions to the images themselves :]

A new fungus starts growing in the clan's territories.

Soon, the Star-reach Tree succumbs to the fungus.

It spreads fast and eats most things.

Within moons, trees start falling.

The clans' connection to StarClan has been severed

Desperate for resources and lost without guidance, the clans are driven to war.

The loss of trees means loss of food and shelter for prey...

As a result, most prey evacuate the area, leaving the clans to starve.

...

War ravages the already weakened clans.

Only few cats remain when the dust settles...

And fewer stay for long.

The clans are no more.

A single cat rallies a small group of former enemies together.

Waspstar receives xeir nine lives the way the Forest Four show xem to, in their new pool, by their new rules. While there, Heartstar assures xem that Juniperclaw has been removed as deputy, will never serve in a position of power again, has gone into exile.

...and Waspstar doesn't respond to that very quickly. Xe has a polite, pungent pause. "Is that the punishment for taking a life? By your code?"

"Our code," Heartstar corrects boldly, in a tone that suggests she sees this as reason and fairness. Our Code-- it protects you too, a gesture of sharing. It makes Waspstar's belly twist. "I've made his punishment VERY severe."

Severe. What a word to describe a vacation.

"He regrets what he's done?"

"Yes, very much."

Waspstar's ear flicks. No. Juniperclaw hasn't even begun to regret what he's done to SkyClan.

"SkyClan will be having a ceremony for Leafstar, to say our goodbyes and welcome in a new era," Xey offer in an even tone, "Spread the word that is is a time of forgiveness. All honored guests may come-- if they want to pay."

Heartstar waits for a beat. Then chuckles incredulously, "Your Clanmew skills could use a brush up. You mean pay their respects, yes? To honor the dead?"

"Oh my, how embarassing," Waspstar smiles back, "I'm so very sorry if I was unclear."

Clear as the sky on a cloudless day. Juniperclaw didn't make it out of that funeral alive. If a true warrior does not need to kill to win their battles, then he was no warrior under the Code at all.
