Anyone who even pointed out that the evidence looked like it may have been faked got dogpiled, so I don’t think it makes sense to treat Aggy not defending herself on a drama blog as evidence of anything. Changing your id is a reasonable response to harassment and I’m pretty sure the reason Red changed her account to Aggy’s name and ID was to point out how easy it is to impersonate someone on discord. Yeah, she could have just turned off friend requests, but sometimes people don’t do the most obvious and logical thing when they��re under a lot of stress, and if the allegations are actually lies that would have been an immensely stressful time.

Also, Aggy actually did post a video showing that she had no conversation history with Talli. The conversation ids between Talli’s videos and her video don’t match, but that actually supports the idea that the proof was faked because Talli has admitted that the faked videos were sent between their account and a sockpuppet, not their account and Aggy’s. Therefore, different conversation ids in discord’s database.

The kind of video editing required to fake the proof is actually very simple if you already know the basics of your software. I’m just an amateur youtube animator and I sometimes use essentially the same effect to move the characters on the screen. It doesn’t require going frame by frame and you can find plenty of motion tweening tutorials online that explain exactly how to do it.

It’s true that tumblr has some security flaws, but being a software engineer (like Red) doesn’t necessarily mean you know how to hack into stuff. There are software engineers who do stuff like white hat hacking to test security on things but it’s a relatively small subset of a large community and most of us don’t know anything about hacking. And if Talli actually was hacked, I question why they haven’t regained access to their account by now by just resetting their password and ending the session of the hacker. There comes a point where you have to ask yourself which option is more likely to be true. All of Aggy’s so-called shady behavior just looks like the actions of someone experiencing harassment. Talli confessed multiple times and explained exactly how they faked the videos. The only way that confession could be fake would be if their account was hacked, but the odds of that happening are way lower than the odds of the videos actually being fake just based on how easy it would be to make the fakes compared to the difficulty of hacking a tumblr, vimeo, and discord acccount.

For Xero, the pricing for each tiered package is straightforward as seen above. For quickbookonline, they have a lower price for a period of 6-12 months before the normal price is applied. Note that all prices are charged in USD.

Outage Drawbacks

While it is much cheaper to use cloud services, one of the major drawbacks is that you are entirely dependent on the service provider to keep its service online. For example, Intuit QuickbookOnline was not available for 6 hours in February 2009 due to ‘network issues’, for 12 hours in June 2010 and 36 hours in July 2010 due to power failure.

For Xero, they had their major outage in June 2009 ‘for hours’ when their host Rackspace was hit by power failure at its Dallas centre. These are just the major outages that last for hours that are widely reported and noted. There are many smaller outages that are ignored by the media. Just like Singapore’s MRT trains, you would have to accept imperfections in an otherwise perfect system.

So while the SaaS prides itself as being the service that is on demand and that you pay for what you consume, sometimes the problem is that you may not be able to get access when you need it the most. Once there is a power outage, it will affect a wide cross section of companies. Not only is availability an issue, your data might be corrupted and so it is always a good idea to backup your data periodically.

Conclusion

Nothing is perfect. The good thing is that these companies have learn their lessons and there are no major disruption in the past 5 years. Improvements have been made such as mobile access on your phones and iPAD for you, your accountants, investors and anyone that matters. These are incremental improvements so they are not written about in detail.

The main benefit of SaaS accounting software is that their low monthly cost and no upfront investments had allowed small businesses to gain access to high quality acccounting services. There are entire accounting firms in Singapore that package their services around Xero (e.g J-Accounting) and QuickbookOnline (e.g. Chiew-Accounting) for a comprehensive accounting package.

Hence it is clear that SaaS accounting is slowly but steadily gaining acceptance. While there might be a new notable entrant or an existing player that might improve their services to gain notice, for now Xero and QuickbookOnline are the 2 leading vendors.

Ex-Yahoo employee avoids jail, despite hacking 6000 accounts, and stealing explicit photos and videos

A former employee of Yahoo has been sentenced and ordered to pay a fine after exploiting his privileged access to hack into the personal accounts of thousands of Yahoo users, in his hunt for naked photographs and videos of young women.

As we previously reported, 34-year-old Reyes Daniel Ruiz, of Tracy, California, admitted last year that he had cracked account passwords and abused internal systems at Yahoo, copying stolen explicit images and videos onto a personal hard drive at his home.

And, having breached Yahoo email acccounts, Ruiz took advantage of the situation to also break into Dropbox, Facebook, Gmail, Hotmail, Apple iCloud, and PhotoBucket accounts – after requesting password resets from the third-party sites be sent to the victim’s registered email address at Yahoo.

As ZDNet reports, court documents reveal that Yahoo Mail engineers were alerted to suspicious account activity on June 21 2018.

Ruiz became aware on the same day that his activities had been uncovered, and left work early to destroy evidence at his home – including the hard drive storing images, and a list of future intended victims he planned to hack.

On August 24 2018, the FBI searched Ruiz’s residence, and the by-now-dismissed software engineer admitted he had destroyed evidence, and that he had done so in an attempt to avoid prosecution.

That admission was a sensible decision by Ruiz, because a US court has decided that he will not have to serve any jail time for the hack.

Under normal circumstances, Ruiz could have faced up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Instead he has been sentenced to probation and home confinement for five years, and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $118,456 in restitution to the hacked email provider.

Presumably, it also played in Ruiz’s favour that he had never been in trouble with the law before, had not distributed the stolen naked images and videos, had made not attempt to contact his victims, and purely used the material for “his own self-gratification.”

Nonetheless, that’s no excuse or waiver for what Ruiz did, and for the distress which his victims must have experienced when they discovered they had fallen victim to his plot.

Although there will be some who will feel that Ruiz should serve a jail sentence for what he did, and it’s understandable that his victims might feel rightly outraged that his sentence means he has avoided incarceration, reading his sentencing memorandum gave me the impression that his actions had already resulted in significant hardship.

Ruiz has only managed to get temporary, low-paid employment since he was dismissed by Yahoo, and his finances appear to be in dire straits. If he hadn’t cooperated with the authorities, or had shared the images online this story might have had a very different ending.

Hopefully this case will act as a warning to others – if you have an urge to see naked pictures and explicit videos of people, there are plenty of places you can find them legally on the internet. You don’t need to put your career and liberty at risk by hacking into innocent people’s accounts.

Of course, we knew this wouldn’t stay quiet forever. Last month, Microsoft disclosed more RDP vulnerabilities in what’s being called “DejaBlue.” These are another set of wormable bugs, but we have a walkthrough for how Cisco Firepower customers can stay protected.

Elsewhere on the vulnerability front, we have advisories out for an information disclosure in Blynk-Library and two bugs in Epignosis eFront.

We also have our weekly Threat Roundup, which you can find on the blog every Friday afternoon. There, we go over the most prominent threats we’ve seen (and blocked) over the past week.

The talk will go through the two actors’ tactics, techniques and procedures and the makeup of their targets. This presentation will provide several technical breakdowns of real-world attacks that have been seen leveraging DNS for a variety of purposes such as DNSMessenger, DNSpionage, and more.

Cyber Security Week in Review

A new study from IBM shows that American taxpayers do not support their tax money going toward paying ransomware extortion requests. The survey found that 80 percent of respondents say they are concerned about a ransomware attack on their city, and 60 percent say they would not want their government using taxpayer dollars to pay off attackers with the promise of returning stolen data.

A server containing millions of phone numbers linked to Facebook acccounts was found exposed online, including 133 million U.S. users. The server was not protected by a password, so anyone who found it could access it. 

The Federal Trade Commission and the state of New York levied a $170 million fine against YouTube for its mishandling of children’s data. YouTube will now require users uploading content targeted toward children to tag them as such, and will ask for parental consent before tracking children’s usage. 

A new report suggests there could be a link between companies and cities that have cyber insurance policies and those who are targeted by ransomware attacks. Organizations with insurance are also more likely to pay any requested extortion payments compared to those without policies. 

Chinese tech company Huawei accused the U.S. of launching cyber attacks against it to steal information. They also said the American government has used “unscrupulous means” to disrupt its business. 

A recently discovered group of malicious websites targeting mobile devices are believed to be sponsored by China to target Uyghur Muslims. The websites were able to infect iPhones and Android devices just by having the user open the site. 

An attack took down a popular online forum used by protestors in Hong Kong. Citizens there have spent weeks pushing back on policies that would closer align the region’s government with China. 

Congress introduced a bipartisan bill that would boost the federal government’s cyber defense systems. The proposed law would increase the amount of funding the Department of Homeland Security has to beef up federal government agencies’ internal security. 

Google Pixel owners began receiving Android 10 this week. The new mobile operating system includes new security and privacy features, including the ability to change location tracking services on an app-by-app basis on one screen.
