OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle launch $100 billion Stargate Project to build AI data centers in the US
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle have announced a $100 billion joint venture called the Stargate Project to build AI-focused data centers in the U.S., starting with a massive facility in Texas.
The project, which may grow to a $500 billion investment over four years, aims to create "hundreds of thousands" of jobs and bolster U.S. leadership in AI.
The initiative involves partnerships with Microsoft, Nvidia, Arm, Broadcom, TSMC, and MGX, with OpenAI overseeing operations and SoftBank managing finances. Oracle, Nvidia, and OpenAI will collaborate closely on building and running the infrastructure. The first data center, in Abilene, Texas, could require nearly a gigawatt of power by 2026 and is part of a plan to scale up to 20 sites by 2029, with each facility spanning 500,000 square feet.
Stargate is positioned as both an economic and strategic effort, supporting U.S. re-industrialization and national security. However, critics highlight potential environmental impacts and fewer-than-promised job creations, as data centers consume vast amounts of water and energy.
The project aligns with broader trends, as AI infrastructure investments surge. Microsoft, for instance, plans to spend $80 billion on AI data centers, while other major players are forming partnerships to pool resources for similar developments.

Consider the ways oil and gas are already entwined with big tech. The foundation of the partnership between Big Tech and Big Oil is the cloud, explains Zero Cool, a software expert who went to Kazakhstan to do work for Chevron and chronicled this in Logic magazine. “For Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, as well as a few smaller cloud competitors like Oracle and IBM, winning the IT spend of the Fortune 500 is where most of the money in the public cloud market will be made”—and out of the biggest ten companies in the world by revenue, six are in the business of oil production. What are oil companies going to do with the cloud? Apparently, Chevron—which signed a seven-year cloud contract with Microsoft—generates a terabyte of data per day per sensor and has thousands of wells with these sensors. They can’t even use all that data because of the scale of computation required. “Big Tech doesn’t just supply the infrastructures that enable oil companies to crunch their data,” explains Zero Cool; they also provide analytic tools, and machine learning can help discover patterns to run their operations more efficiently. This is another reason why Big Oils need Big Tech; they have the edge when it comes to artificial intelligence/machine learning. “Why go through the effort of using clean energy to power your data centers when those same data centers are being used by companies like Chevron to produce more oil?” Zero Cool asks, also noting that one of the main reasons oil companies are interested in technology is to surveil workers.

Star Trek Voyager B Plots Part 2
[Link to Part 1 of this project]
In this second part of my B Plots project, I was interested in looking at which major Voyager characters feature most and least frequently in B Plots. In the vast majority of cases, Voyager’s B Plots focus on interactions between several of the major characters, or interactions between a major character and a minor character. B Plots that feature no major characters are rare.
The following graph shows the total number of Voyager episodes that included at least one B Plot featuring each major character:
Tumblr media
Note that this graph counts episodes rather than individual B Plots. There were many cases of a particular character being featured in multiple B Plots within a single episode, but only individual episodes were counted. Once again, double episodes counted as only a single episode. Also, one B Plot could count as featuring up to four separate characters. If a B Plot significantly featured more than four major characters or no major characters at all, I did not count it in this particular graph.
A complete list of B Plots organized by character is below the cut. Once again, constructive thoughts or feedback on any aspect of this project are welcome.
Side note: The above graph only represents B Plots, not the overall proportion of time/focus dedicated to each Voyager character – after all, A Plots take up the vast majority of most Voyager episodes. I previously completed another project on character focus in the main plots of Voyager episodes which you can find here. If you found this project interesting, you’ll probably also be interested in this project done by @the-oracle-of-the-lost on number of lines spoken by each Voyager main character (the project also includes data on other Star Trek shows).

While Oracle co-founder, executive chairman, and CTO Larry Ellison is busy trying to position his company as just the right provider of future centralized surveillance systems powered by AI and containing massive amounts of sensitive information – Oracle’s existing solutions are suffering embarrassing data breaches.
Two reported recent incidents affecting Oracle Cloud, and Oracle Health – a subsidiary providing software for the healthcare industry – revealed not only technical shortcomings but also the giant’s puzzling lack of transparency, which reports say extremely frustrated those affected.
In fact, Oracle continued to deny that the first breach happened at all – even as customers were starting to confirm it.
A hacker calling themselves “rose87168” earlier in March offered data belonging to six million Oracle Cloud customers, only for Oracle to tell Bleeping Computer, “There has been no breach of Oracle Cloud. The published credentials are not for the Oracle Cloud. No Oracle Cloud customers experienced a breach or lost any data.”
