So I've seen a few of my mutuals clutching their pearls over the UHC shooter being praised, others cheering him on, and some cheering him on reluctantly. While nobody asked for it, I'm going to give my input as a forensic specialist and consultant.

We have a multi tiered judicial system that splits things into "price points". If you're in certain tax brackets you get tried a certain way. If you're a corporation, CEO of a big corporation, or a board member / officer then you also get special treatment as well.

(In fact, one of the best recent representations of this is the trial scene from the new season of Helluva Boss where Solas is not executed when taking responsibility for the crime Blitz is accused of when Blitz was going to be executed for it.)

We then split all of this into what we call "blue collar" and "white collar" crime. White collar crime does more damage to people than what we classify as blue collar crime.

The latter is what we make television shows and podcasts out of, the former is maybe touched upon in a legal or financial drama.

The latter involves people who fall in the realm of Ed Gein who maybe kill into the double digits, the former involves people who make decisions that harm and/or kill into the hundreds if not thousands.

The latter involves robberies and assaults, the latter involves people going into debt because of a corporate decision and maybe committing suicide because they can't pay it off.

The latter involves vandalism of a building, the former involves a company being slapped with a fine because they polluted an entire area and now the residents have to deal with life altering and damaging health issues.

In my time as a forensic consultant I have worked cases that would fit into Hannibal very easily. So have my colleagues. It's not uncommon for us to encounter something at a crime scene that we would call ontologically evil because it is absolutely horrific to witness. I've been on a few cases where I would definitely classify the perpetrator of the crime as such.

But considering all of that... I would still say the worst crimes are committed by corporations and their leadership because they do so much more damage. They harm so many more people and our legal system is not set up for that.

It's set up to handle the murder, the robbery, and so on. It's set up so that people can receive justice for very immediate and visceral crimes. It's punitive and handles the individual.

It was barely set up to handle something like Love Canal.

It's definitely not set up to measure and act upon the scale of harm that corporations and their leadership impart upon the average citizen through exploiting loopholes in regulations, committing actual criminal behavior, and other unethical acts that simply result in a fine. It doesn't know how to prosecute a company and its leadership for causing lifelong harm to people.

We are still using criminological theory from the 18th century as the basis for a lot of our criminal justice system. So you can understand why it's not set up to handle white collar crime that would impact whole populations.

I personally can't recall any conversation with a colleague where we discussed a CEO or board members actually being charged with something that encapsulated the harm they did to people. It's always some form of fraud or embezzlement, because money matters more.

That's the issue. Those charges usually result in a fine which can easily be paid off and then they're back to it. Maybe they get fired, maybe the company is dissolved, but rarely do we get a Bernie Madoff like ending. Even then, the charge against Madoff was for the ponzi scheme he was running. A financial crime.

And that's the crux of it all. We are all witness to the privileges given to certain tax brackets here in the USA. The blatant corruption, bending of ethics and morals, and exploitation of legal and regulatory loopholes with no real recourse. I'm not surprised something like this happened. I'm shocked that it didn't happen sooner to be honest. Yes, we can change the system in some instances. But in others? You're naive. Completely and utterly. Remember my post about the ghost gun and how the NRA controls firearm research in this country and threatens careers? That's been since the 90s. That's 30ish years. You sound just like the grad student who comes in with big ideas who thinks they can change the system and we all look at you and go "good luck kid, but here's all our attempts, our continuing attempts, and the threats we've gotten." It's a been there, done that situation that only changes when the powers that be actually feel that they're no longer untouchable and under threat. It's the way it has always been (I even have some examples in entomology like this I can throw out there as well).

Now, I'm not saying we should go full Robespierre and drag every CEO out to the guillotine. I'm not an accelerationist or maximalist by any account. But I'm not crying over this at all, nor am I shaming anyone who is cheerfully celebrating. Hell, many of us recently celebrated the death of leaders whose crimes would fall into the blue collar category (and you should be able to understand the impact of both and how bad both things are).

But our legal system needs a complete and utter overhaul to handle white collar crime that happens in the modern era and address the very real harm that these companies and leadership do. I would love to see actual legal repercussions for these companies and have them held accountable for the harm they've done. But I realistically don't think that will happen in my life time, and neither do a lot of others. Hence why something like this did happen, and will likely happen again.

Interview with Tether CTO Paolo Artoino on Lugano legal tender law

In September, El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. A seminal moment for the crypto world at large, and attention then turned to who would be next.

Last week, we got our answer. Not a country, but a city – Lugano, the Italian-speaking city in Switzerland. Yeah, we didn’t expect it either. 

A small city of only 62,000, a quick Google Image search will tell you that Lugano is magnificent; the city nestled stunningly by the eponymous lake in Switzerland. Now, it has a swanky new currency to match its jaw-dropping views. In fact, it has three of them. Lugano announced, via a partnership with Tether, that Tether, Bitcoin and LVGA (a CHF stablecoin launched by the city) are now “de facto” legal tender.

This means citizens can pay their taxes, parking fines, tuition fees, tickets to public events and more in crypto (I also managed to confirm that you can even pay your cemetery tax via the blockchain, in case you were wondering).

Plan B

The goal of the project goes beyond simply accepting crypto day-to-day, however. The aim is to establish Lugano as the blockchain hub of Europe. The city wants to attract crypto talent, startups and investment from around the world.

Tether Chief Technology Officer Paolo Ardoino spoke at the launch event, confirming a 100 million CHF ($107 million) fund for “start-ups that want to relocate here and want to put their headquarters here”. There will also be “3 million CHF investment into practical grassroots blockchain projects”, “a start-up hub for 25+ innovative companies”, a “space for meetups and workshops open to the public” and “500+ student grants for education in bitcoin and decentralised technologies”.

It’s certainly a tempting sales pitch for any young, enthusiastic crypto entrepreneur. And that’s before you catch a glimpse of Lake Lugano…

While El Salvador’s announcement perhaps had more of an impact on a macro scale, given Bitcoin was adopted by an entire country, the Lugano initiative is absolutely fascinating. It represents crypto’s first “official” foray into a first-world market. Furthermore, the inclusion of a stablecoin like Tether in the bill means there is a whole new layer here compared to the Central American country, who went all-in on Bitcoin alone. A large portion of the critics of El Salvador’s move centred on the violent volatility that Bitcoin can be prone to, and the harm that may cause citizens. Obviously with Tether (and LVGA), there is a peg to fiat and therefore the volatility is not an issue.

Naturally, we were very curious about the whole process and had some questions on the initiative. So we managed to interview the man closest to the action – Tether CTO Paolo Ardoino himself.

CoinJournal: Would it be possible (or could you ever forsee) a city or country adopting a stablecoin such as Tether as legal tender alone, or will it always be in conjunction with Bitcoin? 

Paolo Ardoino: There will be more collaboration than competition between Bitcoin and stablecoins. Stablecoins, such as Tether, laid the groundwork for CBDCs.

Privately issued stablecoins will continue to grow and eventually, many governments will realize that stablecoins have distinct advantages over standard banking protocols.

Currently, the entire banking system relies on outdated technologies, so stablecoins have been a way to modernize it in a few quick steps.

I expect that 10 years from now, the technology layer being used by banks will be phased out and replaced with more advanced rails.

CJ: How many (or what percentage) of transactions do you expect will be conducted via crypto in Lugano, rather than Swiss franc?

PA: The City of Lugano aims to become a blockchain center of excellence and a global hub for European blockchain initiatives. We hope to see at least one out of every five transactions conducted via crypto as scaling and implementation occurs.

The current plan is to evaluate the flow of Bitcoin use, evaluate our treasury, and make an informed decision tied to the market as implementation takes place.

CJ: Switzerland’s cost of living is notoriously high. Do you think this will affect Plan B’s ambitions to attract businesses and entrepreneurs to the city?

No. Tether makes a significant contribution to a more connected ecosystem by introducing digital currency benefits, such as instant global transactions, to traditional currency and incorporating traditional currency benefits like price stability to digital currency. As such, Tether’s partnership with Lugano advances its mission to provide the most secure, fastest, and lowest cost way to transact with money, opening the door for businesses and entrepreneurs.

CJ: You mention a large goal of this process is to bring financial freedom to all citizens of Lugano. Do you think a decentralised stablecoin could be better positioned to do this? Or do you think given the fact it is still pegged to fiat, that stablecoins cannot facilitate this and a city needs to also adopt Bitcoin? 

PA: In general, stablecoins are less volatile than other forms of blockchain because they are represented by fixed assets. They are built to withstand the volatility of the current market. As adoption becomes wider and we see more practical use of bitcoin, we estimate that blockchain and crypto will enter a period of stability and normalcy.

CJ: Did Lugano seek assurances on whether Tether was 100% backed, or were they content with what Tether has already released publicly on the matter?

PA: Tether and the city of Lugano sat down and openly discussed the misconceptions about the company. Tether has publicly stated that it has ongoing conversations with regulators and law enforcement and has made valiant efforts in complying with all requests for transparency.

Tether remains a leader in transparency and in getting information to the community and its stakeholders, and demonstrating full backing, and it wants to preserve that position. Tether is not just keeping up with regulation changes and assurances but helping law enforcement and regulators globally shape them.

Tether is committed to being a positive force in this space and its actions speak to that.

CJ: Are you in talks to partner up with other cities/countries, or do you foresee other places following Lugano’s lead? 

PA: As we did with Lugano, we are eager to work with all the municipalities and countries of Europe; we would be honored to realize our vision and the future of finance in other areas.

CJ: At the Plan B conference, you referenced the force for good that crypto can do, in relation to the crypto donations accepted by Ukraine. But do you have concern crypto could also have an opposite effect, in that it could be used to circumvent economic sanctions (such as the sanctions being levelled on Russia)?

PA: In these uncertain times, we have seen an uptick in the utility of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. For one, they are being used to raise funds for legitimate civilian organisations that are helping people who are displaced or in danger. That is the beauty of this technology: the borderless and censorship-proof nature of bitcoin allows it to act as a safe haven during turbulent times.

With that being said, Tether is constantly conducting market monitoring to ensure that our operations are not in contravention of international sanctions. This is part of Tether’s rigorous compliance programme.

Tether regularly cooperates with global regulators and law enforcement requests and will comply with sanctions, as applicable, on assets pursuant to relevant law. We vow to continue to explore how Tether, as a platform can put procedures in place to protect all Tether users and the wider community.

Hi Casey! Thank you for accepting this interview, the first one we do for the Power Progress Community blog.

1) Please, briefly introduce yourself and how and when you started to be involved with the PowerPC platform.

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself to the community. One of my first computers was a Power Mac, and I remember thinking the little “PowerPC” badge was pretty cool, even before I really knew what it meant. For quite a while I was an Apple fan, my next computer was an iMac G3 SE, and then a Power Mac G5 970MP machine, which I was quite proud of. I still have that machine, and it currently runs the Fienix repository. After Apple stopped providing updates for the G5, which was still a fast and capable machine, I started experimenting with Linux. I learned so much getting Linux running on my G5, and really enjoyed the sense of accomplishment that came with getting a stable environment set up, all the customizations I could do, and the limitations that I could break; for example, using a non-Apple Radeon video card.

My interest in PowerPC architecture has continued to today for different reasons. I don’t believe it is a good thing for the entire consumer market to be dependent upon one CPU architecture. Intel’s Management Engine and AMD’s Secure Technology have raised serious privacy and security concerns, and several vulnerabilities have been found in both systems. The PowerPC architecture is an ideal alternative as a high-performance, proven, and mature platform. Additionally, I think the idea of “open hardware” is exciting, and major PowerPC vendors like NXP/Freescale and IBM seem to be on-board with the idea.

Besides PowerPC, open-source, and Linux, I enjoy video games and I think video game level design is really interesting. Maybe this will be my next project.

2) Do you own any PowerPC based computers? What do you use it for?

I have an A-EON X5000 (based on the NXP P5020 2 Ghz CPU, e5500 core, book3e) running Fienix, which has taken over as my everyday machine. I also still have my Power Mac G5, which is currently what runs the Fienix repository. I also think I might have an iBook G4 around here someplace…

3) When did you first hear about the Power Progress Community?

I came across and started following the PowerPC Notebook Project in February, 2016. I don’t remember how I heard of the project though; I read about it somewhere online.

4) What do you think about the PowerPC laptop project and the donation campaign? Regarding our notebook project, as you probably know, we will release it as open source. What do you think about open source hardware?

I think it’s amazing! Manufacturers today act as if they are only renting out their hardware; they retain far too much control. They try to run secret hidden processes that the hardware owner cannot disable, they mandate updates the hardware owner cannot opt out of, require online connectivity, and prevent the hardware owner from repairing their own hardware by using “security” chips, and even dictate what OS can be installed and what software can be run. These are all significant problems, and open-source hardware is an exciting solution.

5) When and why did you first have the idea of building your own Linux distribution? Fienix is an interesting name. Where did it come from?

I got the idea to create a new Linux distribution after Ubuntu announced that PowerPC support would be discontinued after 16.04 LTS. I started working on the distro in late 2017, before it had a name. I wanted to think of a name that would be memorable, original, and carry some imagery of renewed strength or recovery.

Fienix was almost going to be named “Rally OS”. I even still have the assets like the Rally OS logo and branded backgrounds. I think the definition of rally is perfectly fitting; “to recover or cause to recover in health, spirits, or poise”. I just wasn’t quite happy with how it sounded, so I started thinking of alternatives.

I liked the word Phoenix and the imagery associated with it, of a mythological firebird symbolizing renewal. However, it isn’t a very original term, so I started looking for what other cultures call the Phoenix. Most of these are just variations on the spelling, like “feniks” in Dutch, Polish, and Romanian, “feeniks” in Finnish, and “fönix” in Icelandic. So I decided that I would make up an original spelling that I thought looked the most aesthetically pleasing, which ended up being “Fienix”.

6) Why did you create Fienix, when there is Debian for PowerPC already?

I know you’ll love them as much as I did. Debian is absolutely great, and their contributions to open-source software are innumerable and significant. However, Debian’s focus is very broad; everything from a desktop computer to an enterprise server, to a system running complex scientific calculations are in-scope for Debian. Fienix is specifically focused on desktop/workstation/notebook use cases and emphases user-experience.

Debian provides a basic, somewhat lackluster user experience upon booting into a fresh install. Testing and installing additional utilities, making customizations, and editing scripts is required for an attractive, user-focused, responsive system. Fienix is focused on providing a stable, elegant operating system with a responsive, thoughtful desktop right out of the gate.

Debian maintains a vast repository with software for everything from operating amateur radio stations, to recombining genome sequences, to running interactive web servers. Unfortunately it is not uncommon to come across a PowerPC binary that will not execute. Fienix is focused on providing a more curated assortment of software that is still diverse and exciting, but which is also reliable on PowerPC systems and useful for desktop/workstation/notebook users.

Fienix includes many programs that Debian does not. For example, Fienix includes the Arctic Fox web browser, which is hands-down the best browser for everyday use on PowerPC systems (check out Arctic Fox GitHub at https://github.com/wicknix/Arctic-Fox). Other “added” programs include both libre (open-source) and gratis (no-charge, under copyright) software.

Fienix includes optimizations and performance improvements that Debian does not.

Due to the constantly rolling nature of Sid, packages often have broken dependencies for some days. The Fienix repository is based on a stable snapshot of Sid, so you still get the newest software, but also get a stable environment.

I also have some ideas about ways that Fienix can help people learn about certain interests they may have, like graphic design or creating a video game, and give them tools that can help them explore that interest, so that may be something to look forward to.

7) What is the most complicated issue you have had to solve so far while setting up Fienix?

The most complicated issue was learning how to setup the repository.

8) What is your workflow for setting up your software repository? Are you compiling all packages from sources? What are the differences from the Debian PowerPC repository?

I use Reprepro for repository management; it’s a great tool and has been very helpful. Reprepro calculates all the checksums, generates the lists, and helps with version control. I do not build every package from source, only those that have a problem or cause some sort of regression, as well as those that do not exist in Debian.

9) Is anybody helping you in maintaining the Fienix software repository?

I’ve been doing the actual repository organization myself, but I’ve had a great deal of assistance with Fienix in general. Christian Zigotzky provides kernels and has assisted with debugging and building several programs. The work done by Matt (wicknix) as well as Riccardo Mottola on the Arctic Fox team has also made things a lot easier since I don’t have to worry about a browser any longer 🙂

10) What are the top 5 most useful applications that would make an operating system suitable for the average user in 2019?

I’ve broken these down into categories, because I feel like completing a task is generally more important than using a specific app.

Web: The most important app is a current web browser. I’m impressed with Arctic Fox and I am excited to see where this project goes. Additionally, pairing Arctic Fox with VLC browser plugin, Greasemonkey, and ViewTube/ViewTube+ provides flawless HD video streaming from YouTube and many other sites (installed by default in Fienix).

Email: Even though web mail is becoming the norm, I still think a good email client is important. Fienix has several great clients to choose from including Thunderbird and Evolution.

Media: The Kodi app has been getting some buzz lately due to their recent releases. Kodi is currently in testing for a Fienix release. Of course, VLC and SMPlayer are ultra-versatile players as well.

Office/Productivity: Most everyone has at least an occasional need for a good office program, and LibreOffice definitely has all the bases covered. Their upcoming release is getting some buzz as well.

Communication & Connectivity: Cross-platform communication tools that allow seamless messaging between phone, desktop, and/or web based clients will continue to be important to users. Facebook and WhatsApp are the most popular services, but apps such as Telegram are growing quickly. Fienix has support for a number of these protocols via Pidgin, but unfortunately Telegram isn’t yet one of them. KDE Connect is also a cool concept that isn’t yet available in Fienix, but may be at some point.

11) Are any of these applications is missing or seriously malfunctioning on PowerPC?

I think the most important bases for the “average user” are covered. When I think of some of the most popular “use-cases” there could be some upcoming issues that will need to be addressed. For example, for graphic design the newest version of GIMP needs some work. For video editing the most recent versions of OpenShot and Kdenlive need some attention. Fortunately we have recent versions of these apps that are stable to use until the issues with the newest versions can be looked into.

There are some apps that do not function on PowerPC that I have not dedicated much time to looking into because there are viable alternatives. For example, the Telegram client does not function correctly on PowerPC; however, there are several alternatives such as Simple and XMPP that are integrated into Pidgin. Similarly, Darktable does not execute but RawTherapee functions perfectly.

It’s possible we could also see connectivity features in Fienix similar to those provided by KDE Connect in the future.

12) Are any further applications missing from the PowerPC scene that you would like to include in Fienix?

I’d like to have the ability to access or sync cloud folders (such as DropBox, OneDrive, etc.) with Caja. There is a potential solution for this that I’m looking into.

We need to get GIMP 2.10, Blender 2.8, OpenShot 2.4, and Kdenlive 18.12 running stably (previous versions of these are all functional).

A secondary browser like Midori would be good, especially since they’ve begun focusing on WebApps. Right now the source compiles and the binary executes but it won’t connect to a network.

Finally, it’s not really an application, but important nonetheless, it would be great to have hardware acceleration on Radeon cards released after SI (HD7000 and later). Driver support for these cards has been limited to fbdev. Fortunately, SI and prior cards are pretty well supported and perform well.

13) Is there an application or tool that posed particular issues while porting to PowerPC?

Mozilla has decided to forgo the portability that use to be a strong point of theirs.

There was an issue with the game Hero of Allacrost (which by the way is a great game if you enjoy RPGs) that made it unplayable, and a different issue with the game engine ioquake3, but both of those were resolved with some help from their developers. Several games, like SuperTux and Yamagi (Quake 2 engine) also had issues with background music playing as static. Chrisitian Zigotzky provided the fix for SuperTux and I fixed Yamagi through a config change. There were also some issues that have since been resolved with VLC.

In general, I’ve been surprised how many developers have been responsive and helpful with resolving issues on PowerPC systems.

14) As you may know, here at the Power Progress Community we are strong supporters of PowerPC 64bit big endian and Altivec based Linux distributions. Do you have any plan in releasing a 64bit version of Fienix?

The first release of Fienix has a 32-bit userland primarily because Debian 32-bit PowerPC packages were more stable than the 64-bit versions. Fienix still has some of the benefits of a 64-bit OS due to using a 64-bit kernel, such as with memory management. That said, yes, I plan on working on a pure 64-bit version.

As far as Altivec goes, most programs determine if a system has Altivec at runtime, and then runs the appropriate code, either vector or scalar. GIMP and the libjpeg-turbo library both work in this way, as do many others. However, it is possible to compile a program in a way that does not conditionalize vector instructions. A program compiled in this way will not execute on systems without Altivec.

Fienix contains many programs that include Altivec optimizations, and will continue to do so as long as the vector instructions are conditionalized. Fienix will not contain programs that do not conditionalize vector instructions.

15) As an association targeting the PowerPC platform we would like to support your initiative. How can we best support your effort in trying to make Fienix one of the best Linux distributions for the average user?

Use Fienix and test the apps in the Fienix repository. If you come across bugs and know a solution or workaround, share it. Fienix has a rudimentary bug reporting forum on the website.

Try to build new programs from source if they aren’t included in the Debian repository. If you’re successful, share it. Fienix includes a rudimentary new software request forum on the website. If you’re not successful, put a bug report in with the developer (make sure you understand how to submit a bug report and what information to include first). You may be surprised how accommodating the developer may be. Regardless, bug reports help put the word out there that people are using PowerPC systems, and PowerPC systems are still in production.

Help test and debug Debian PPC64 packages, they will serve as the base for Fienix 64-bit.

Test Fienix on whatever PowerPC systems you have.

16) Have you ever had the chance to try a computer equipped with an IBM Power8 or Power9? Do you know that a micro-ATX motherboard called Blackbird is being released by a company called Raptor? What do you think about it?

I’ve been following Raptor since they announced the first Talos system. When the Talos II system was released I confirmed with Raptor that it can be run in big endian mode (it can). I sadly have not had the chance to use one of these machines yet, but the Blackbird is surprisingly affordable considering what you’re getting, so perhaps sometime in the near future…

17) Many people says that PowerPC is dead. What do you think about the current state of the Power(PC) architecture? Do you think it is a suitable architecture for home computing?

PowerPC has never been dead in terms of the embedded and server markets, but after Apple transitioned to Intel it certainly seemed to be going that way for the consumer market. However, if you look at where PowerPC is today, there is a small resurgence going on. A-EON and ACube both make systems powered by PowerPC, Raptor Computing Systems makes an assortment of high-end PowerPC POWER9 systems, and a promising PowerPC notebook is in the works. Long gone are the days when PowerPC had a chance of overtaking x86 in the consumer market, but I don’t think that’s the point. PowerPC is in a better place today than it has been in years. If privacy, security, and open-hardware are important to you then there is no better architecture than PowerPC. These new PowerPC systems finally give consumers a real choice in the marketplace, and I think that is something to be very enthusiastic about.

18) Are there any other Operating System other than Linux you want to see running on PowerPC?

I’m personally most interested and involved with Linux, but having a choice is always good. We have Linux, FreeBSD, MorphOS, and AmigaOS for certain systems. I think I’d be most enthusiastic about having another Linux distribution pick up PowerPC as a supported architecture. That may seem a bit odd because of course I’d like people to use Fienix but like I said, choice is good!

19) Is there anything else you would like to say to people interested in the PowerPC platform?

If you’re someone who likes learning and experimenting with hardware and software, or you have an appreciation for the principles behind open-source, or you want to contribute to a community where you can make a difference, then the PowerPC platform is a great option for you!

I can't speak to TV much, but religion is ALL OVER spacefaring scifi literature. The "near future" may be quibbling, as a lot of it is far enough in the future that our specific planet earth is a distant memory, but most of what i've read at least positions itself as a future to our real history.

Hyperion by Dan Simmons -- modeled on Canterbury Tales (at least in the sense that every section of the book is “someone’s tale”), and it opens with a Catholic Priest’s tale. Religion, and competing worldview systems are very much THE POINT of the book, even as it’s also a space exploration/adventure story -- the frame story is that 7 “pilgrims” from wildly different backgrounds must come together to confront a --religious figure?? help i don’t remember the Shrike’s deal-- and (attempt to) avert disaster.

Ender’s Game sequels -- tbh not sure I’d recommend them, they get pretty weird. But mentioning them because they are near-future (some of the major characters were born on earth) and multiple religions and the interplay between them. The one I read (Speaker for the Dead) has Brazilian Catholics and alien religions, but I think some of the later books get into (future

And if we’re doing classic scifi, I’d be remiss in not mentioning Dune and Stranger in a Strange Land -- tbh i don’t like either of these books but they were hugely influential as portrayals of religion in the genre.

Back to stuff I do like -- The Faded Sun Trilogy (CJ Cherryh) and The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K Le Guin) are both older-ish scifi with some very interesting, richly imagined and explored in depth, alien cultures in which religion plays a big role. Yeah, I know everyone talks about the gender stuff w/ Left Hand, and that is the main point of it, but the religious culture of Gethen plays a huge part as well (wikipedia has a section on it if you want to know more). Faded Sun is a little bit more “high politics” (though honestly so is LHoD) and old-fashioned, perhaps, but I found the alien cultures depicted and the diplomatic and culutral interplay very worth reading.

For something much newer that I read last year and am still not over, Records of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers -- it’s actually the third book in her Wayfarers series, but the books are only connected by a shared setting and minor character overlaps, not plot, so you’d be fine starting here. This book is about the Exodus Fleet, the remaining descendents of the last wave of refugees from dying Earth, who now live as a somewhat shabby and insular enclave within a diverse & mostly non-human Federation (don’t remember the term they actually use for their society). One of the main viewpoint characters is an Archivist, whose job involves preserving the Fleet’s history but also rites for the Dead. You could argue it’s not a religion in the strictest sense (there aren’t any gods, for example, and even non-deistic spirituality is pretty played down) but I’d argue it plays a similar role in their community, and deeply spiritual within the materialistic axioms of their society. I know a few of the people in this thread are Catholic, so I think you might enjoy this very different take on religion in a similar way to how I enjoyed *A Canticle for Leibowitz*. And there’s so much more to say about this book but this paragraph is getting really long. One more thing I’ll point out, is this is the first thing I’ve mentioned that’s published in the last 5 years, and Becky Chambers has tumblr-friendly politics (in the sense that there is onscreenness queerness of all sorts, and I can guarantee there won’t be outdated racist stereotypes like there probably are in the other books I mentioned)

I could probably keep going but here’s the first handful that came to mind.

Are there any future-humanity (as opposed to Star Wars which is full-on AU) sci-fi stories where religion is still part of the mainstream culture and not looked on as pre-science nonsense?

Interview with CJ Cornell, Author of The Age of Metapreneurship - A Journey into the Future of Entrepreneurship

The Age of Metapreneurship is definitely not your typical "How to start a business book," or success book. What kind of a book is it?

Well, it is indeed a book on entrepreneurship, but it takes you on a journey, from the recent past into the future, using stories and examples, instead of checklists and recipes.  During this journey, you begin to understand how much entrepreneurship has changed, and how most of the how-to books are outdated.

You know, we think of entrepreneurs as visionaries, but most of the time they are so immersed in the details that they miss the big problems and miss the bigger picture.  Sometimes they are so focused and busy, they don't notice when a series of small changes alters the whole landscape. Before they realize it, the entire terrain has changed and they're lost.

And is this what is happening with entrepreneurship? 

Yes. The terrain changed. How to be an entrepreneur changed. Not just because .the tools and techniques have changed, but because people have changed - customers, employees, partners, everyone - our behavior and expectations are different. We share, we collaborate. Customers have new expectations for the companies they buy from - they want more just a quality product at a good price.

So the terrain changed so much that the lessons of the past no longer apply. This is one of the most important lessons of the book.

So entrepreneurs are handicapped by those old lessons.

Definitely. And most won't realize the terrain is different, until it's too late . 

Think about it. When traveling on new terrain, experience can be a liability. It's like being an expert motorcycle rider in the middle of the Sahara. The harder you try, the more you spin your wheels and drive in circles. You're moving, but not making any progress towards your destination. Eventually you will be hopelessly stranded, and it will be too late to save you. For experienced entrepreneurs, the skills and strategies that made you successful before, will fail you, on this new terrain.

The book is filled with wonderful little stories and analogies - one that I like is where you talk about the Cargo Cults of Entrepreneurship.

Ah, cargo cults - the futility of trying to duplicate the success you've seen from afar. Yeah, a lot of regional organizations designed to help entrepreneurs, are prone to this syndrome.  But it's not surprising. The majority of new jobs and economic growth come from new entrepreneurial companies - particularly high-growth companies - like the ones we see from Silicon Valley. Unfortunately a lot of regions try to recreate this success, and it backfires - just like those remote-island cargo cults and their prayer rituals - they're hoping for riches to drop from the sky.

And leads to The Cobra Effect - when the solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse.  So a lot of organizations - from government programs, universities, to incubators and accelerators - designed to help entrepreneurs often have the opposite effect.  Too ofte they are teaching based on the lessons of the past, and using older, ineffective tools.

So entrepreneurs are using the wrong tools? 

Not exactly. Entrepreneurs are too smart for that.  It's easy to know if you’re using the wrong tool for the job, or using a broken tool, and the you simply don't use it. It's a lot harder when you have a tool used to work, but is gradually becoming less effective - like using a knife that gets duller and duller.  

For entrepreneurship the more a tool is used, the less effective it becomes. Eventually, it loses all advantage and becomes a liability.  And it's not just the tools. It's the techniques too.  Entrepreneurs are surrounded by aging advice and advisors - who are ... teaching the lessons of the past.  

So entrepreneurship has changed the old rules don't work anymore - is this the most important message?

Of the first part of the book, yes.  Subtly, the world changed. Most new entrepreneurs are learning from techniques and advice that were effective 5 or 10 years ago. Using them today will makes them more like struggling amateurs.  In fact, the more experienced you are, the worse it can get.

For experts in entrepreneurship, the skills and strategies that made you successful will fail you in this new age of entrepreneurship. It's like being a checkers champion and sitting down at a tournament realizing everyone is now playing chess. All those strategy books on checkers no longer apply.

Are there new rules?

Not exactly. Rules are like receipes - meant to help beginners. But if you don't really know how to cook, you'll be lost if the ingredients change, or if you need to improvise and cook for 20 people instead of 4 people. 

Instead you need strategies, big strategies - and then you can make up your own rules.  It's like having a map and directions - but if the terrain changes then directions are useless. What you really need is a compass, and a way to step back and see the new terrain.

   So what is this new terrain like?  How does the modern entrepreneur succeed?

First is recognizing how modern entrepreneurship is no longer just about solving a problem for a customer and creating an innovative product. Now, navigating the new terrain means being able to manage the network effects that can scale your business quickly (and can destroy it quickly ).

Building a network, sharing, participating, contributing to the network, are all core aspects of entrepreneurship now. These skills are not optional. And then there's getting used to some big terrain changes.

   So, for instance, one staple of business school wisdom - Scarcity. It used to make things valuable, and also provided a competitive advantage.  But today we live in an age of abundance, and nothing is really scarce anymore. We expect so much - particularly content and services -  to be cheap and free. 

But Abundance isn't merely "more stuff." Abundance complicates. Abundance has consequences. Abundance spawns new opportunities. In The Age of Metapreneurship, the best entrepreneurs know how to create value from all this abundance.  They know that “every abundance creates a new scarcity.” For instance, an abundance of content creates a scarcity of time (for consumers).   Also an abundance of people on the network equals a crowd ...

The books talks about Crowds quite a bit - including crowdsourcing and crowdfunding.

Yes. Crowds change everything - crowdsourcing, crowdfunding and collective intelligence. Leveraging the crowd is the new talent of this era.  Today, the crowd is your advisor, your designer, your investor, customer, vendor and employee - and any combination.  For the traditional entrepreneur this is very confusing, but for the modern Metapreneur. It's the "new normal."

Right, you talk about "Blurred Lines" ... 

The clearly defined roles and relationships: employees, customers, vendors, companies, founders - are no longer clear. The lines between them are blurred.  Our customers are our collaborators, even our investors. And this is causing everyone to behave differently: New customers, new employees, new companies. Entrepreneurs who expect the old behaviors will fail. Those who can adapt to the new norms, will thrive and succeed,

So who is this new kind of entrepreneur, the Metapreneur?

Being a Metapreneur is thriving as a modern entrepreneur. It means that they are building something much more than just their own business.  And it means that they are connected, collaborative. They share, they contribute, and they participate.

The Metapreneur is the opposite of the lone achiever. Success is no longer about being a rock star; it’s about playing jazz in an ensemble.

Younger entrepreneurs generally make the transition because they already live connected, collaborative live.  It's the experienced entrepreneur -- who has the most difficulty.

Well, I've been through the journey more than once. I started as a software engineer, founded or co-founded 8 companies - attracted $250 funding and generated $ 3 Billion in revenues.  After 25 years, I had intensive experience at being an entrepreneur, it should have been getting easier - but it was getting harder.

Later, as a venture capitalist, angel, mentor, advisor and entrepreneurship professor, I was able to work with and study hundreds and hundreds of startups and entrepreneurs - and pattern was becoming clear I noticed a lot of the conventional techniques that were being taught, just weren't working anymore.

But at the same time i was inspired by many of the newer founders who were natives to the new terrain - so they were able to naturally leverage the network, the crowds, and the new behaviors.

I have another book getting ready for release later this summer, called The Startup Brain Trust. It's all about advisors, mentors and entrepreneurs. And I still do a lot of speaking, teaching, consulting and advising startup companies.

Oh lord no.  I'm pretty lazy, and have procrastination down to a science.  I exercise and run half marathons with my wife,  and spend time renovating different parts of our house over and over again.  I've learned that you can accomplish anything if you are curious enough, and are willing to put in enough energy into multitasking, procrastination and play.

The Age of Metapreneurship is definitely not your typical "How to start a business book," or success book. What kind of a book is it?

Well, it is indeed a book on entrepreneurship, but it takes you on a journey, from the recent past into the future, using stories and examples, instead of checklists and recipes.  During this journey, you begin to understand how much entrepreneurship has changed, and how most of the how-to books are outdated.

You know, we think of entrepreneurs as visionaries, but most of the time they are so immersed in the details that they miss the big problems and miss the bigger picture.  Sometimes they are so focused and busy, they don't notice when a series of small changes alters the whole landscape. Before they realize it, the entire terrain has changed and they're lost.

And is this what is happening with entrepreneurship? 

Yes. The terrain changed. How to be an entrepreneur changed. Not just because .the tools and techniques have changed, but because people have changed - customers, employees, partners, everyone - our behavior and expectations are different. We share, we collaborate. Customers have new expectations for the companies they buy from - they want more just a quality product at a good price.

So the terrain changed so much that the lessons of the past no longer apply. This is one of the most important lessons of the book.

So entrepreneurs are handicapped by those old lessons.

Definitely. And most won't realize the terrain is different, until it's too late . 

Think about it. When traveling on new terrain, experience can be a liability. It's like being an expert motorcycle rider in the middle of the Sahara. The harder you try, the more you spin your wheels and drive in circles. You're moving, but not making any progress towards your destination. Eventually you will be hopelessly stranded, and it will be too late to save you. For experienced entrepreneurs, the skills and strategies that made you successful before, will fail you, on this new terrain.

The book is filled with wonderful little stories and analogies - one that I like is where you talk about the Cargo Cults of Entrepreneurship.

Ah, cargo cults - the futility of trying to duplicate the success you've seen from afar. Yeah, a lot of regional organizations designed to help entrepreneurs, are prone to this syndrome.  But it's not surprising. The majority of new jobs and economic growth come from new entrepreneurial companies - particularly high-growth companies - like the ones we see from Silicon Valley. Unfortunately a lot of regions try to recreate this success, and it backfires - just like those remote-island cargo cults and their prayer rituals - they're hoping for riches to drop from the sky.

And leads to The Cobra Effect - when the solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse.  So a lot of organizations - from government programs, universities, to incubators and accelerators - designed to help entrepreneurs often have the opposite effect.  Too ofte they are teaching based on the lessons of the past, and using older, ineffective tools.

So entrepreneurs are using the wrong tools? 

Not exactly. Entrepreneurs are too smart for that.  It's easy to know if you’re using the wrong tool for the job, or using a broken tool, and the you simply don't use it. It's a lot harder when you have a tool used to work, but is gradually becoming less effective - like using a knife that gets duller and duller.  

For entrepreneurship the more a tool is used, the less effective it becomes. Eventually, it loses all advantage and becomes a liability.  And it's not just the tools. It's the techniques too.  Entrepreneurs are surrounded by aging advice and advisors - who are ... teaching the lessons of the past.  

So entrepreneurship has changed the old rules don't work anymore - is this the most important message?

Of the first part of the book, yes.  Subtly, the world changed. Most new entrepreneurs are learning from techniques and advice that were effective 5 or 10 years ago. Using them today will makes them more like struggling amateurs.  In fact, the more experienced you are, the worse it can get.

For experts in entrepreneurship, the skills and strategies that made you successful will fail you in this new age of entrepreneurship. It's like being a checkers champion and sitting down at a tournament realizing everyone is now playing chess. All those strategy books on checkers no longer apply.

Are there new rules?

Not exactly. Rules are like receipes - meant to help beginners. But if you don't really know how to cook, you'll be lost if the ingredients change, or if you need to improvise and cook for 20 people instead of 4 people. 

Instead you need strategies, big strategies - and then you can make up your own rules.  It's like having a map and directions - but if the terrain changes then directions are useless. What you really need is a compass, and a way to step back and see the new terrain.

   So what is this new terrain like?  How does the modern entrepreneur succeed?

First is recognizing how modern entrepreneurship is no longer just about solving a problem for a customer and creating an innovative product. Now, navigating the new terrain means being able to manage the network effects that can scale your business quickly (and can destroy it quickly ).

Building a network, sharing, participating, contributing to the network, are all core aspects of entrepreneurship now. These skills are not optional. And then there's getting used to some big terrain changes.

   So, for instance, one staple of business school wisdom - Scarcity. It used to make things valuable, and also provided a competitive advantage.  But today we live in an age of abundance, and nothing is really scarce anymore. We expect so much - particularly content and services -  to be cheap and free. 

But Abundance isn't merely "more stuff." Abundance complicates. Abundance has consequences. Abundance spawns new opportunities. In The Age of Metapreneurship, the best entrepreneurs know how to create value from all this abundance.  They know that “every abundance creates a new scarcity.” For instance, an abundance of content creates a scarcity of time (for consumers).   Also an abundance of people on the network equals a crowd ...

Yes. Crowds change everything - crowdsourcing, crowdfunding and collective intelligence. Leveraging the crowd is the new talent of this era.  Today, the crowd is your advisor, your designer, your investor, customer, vendor and employee - and any combination.  For the traditional entrepreneur this is very confusing, but for the modern Metapreneur. It's the "new normal."

The clearly defined roles and relationships: employees, customers, vendors, companies, founders - are no longer clear. The lines between them are blurred.  Our customers are our collaborators, even our investors. And this is causing everyone to behave differently: New customers, new employees, new companies. Entrepreneurs who expect the old behaviors will fail. Those who can adapt to the new norms, will thrive and succeed,

So who is this new kind of entrepreneur, the Metapreneur?

Being a Metapreneur is thriving as a modern entrepreneur. It means that they are building something much more than just their own business.  And it means that they are connected, collaborative. They share, they contribute, and they participate.

The Metapreneur is the opposite of the lone achiever. Success is no longer about being a rock star; it’s about playing jazz in an ensemble.

Younger entrepreneurs generally make the transition because they already live connected, collaborative live.  It's the experienced entrepreneur -- who has the most difficulty.

Although there technically are no ethical limitations on who can direct a film regardless of what culture it depicts, it is important to note the specific differences that arise between whites and nonwhites when they decide to direct films outside of their own cultural spheres. Stuart Hall refers to signs in semiotic analysis in his 2001 book “Media and Cultural Studies” by “signs appear to acquire their full ideological value – appear to be open to articulation with wider ideological discourses and meanings – at the level of their “associative” meanings (that is, at the connotative level)” (Hall, 2001, p.168). Essentially, to analyze is to attempt to view the signs (symbols) for what they mean ideologically and connotatively (under the surface).  Through careful semiotic analysis of the signs and codes presented, it is possible to extrapolate that while nonwhite-directed films depicting cultures outside of their own tend to be objective and nuanced in their portrayals, white-directed films of the same nature are seeming to edge dangerously close to Orientalism, a concept coined by literature professor Edward Said as the patronizing and inaccurate depictions of the “East” by Western cultures. In terms of cross-cultural film direction, the white-directed films “Sicario” (2015) and “The Raid: Redemption”(2011), contain connotations that exhibit noticeable attributes of Orientalism, which are then magnified when contrasted and cross-referenced with nonwhite-directed trans-cultural films “Snowpiercer” (2013) and “The Last Stand” (2013).

    It’s important to note that connotative analysis of a film does nothing to detract from its artistic merits nor does it attempt to make any claims as to its subjective entertainment value, as all four of the film examples in this paper are considered to be positively reviewed by critics, with several achieving near-universal acclaim. This is meaningful as the majority of critics nor analysts have not yet found any fault with the idea of cross-cultural misrepresentation by film directors. Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 film “Sicario” received a 93% approval rating on the review-aggregate website RottenTomatoes. Likewise, Bong Joon-Ho’s 2013 film “Snowpiercer” recieved a 95% score, Gareth Evans’ 2011 “The Raid” recieved 85% and Kim Jee-woon’s 2013 “The Last Stand” recieved 60%. Films are not judged based on their connotative meanings, which has nothing to do with whether they are subjectively “good” or bad”. Rather, this analysis is about what the directors have chosen to communicate through their choices of imagery when depicting cultures outside of their own.

Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian director, and while his film “Sicario” deals with mainly American characters, the film spends the majority of its runtime portraying Mexico and American attempts to disrupt its criminal underworld. As such, it is portrayed as a grim land entirely defined by the presence of drug cartel gangs and gang violence taken to the utmost extreme. While it may thematically and narratively enhance the experience of watching the film, the fact that Villeneuve’s cultural identity is not that of Mexico means that what is seen in the film is his own interpretation of that place. That is, he has filled in the gaps in his experience with his own personal coding and signing of the city of Juarez, Mexico in the film standing in for an idea of a fearsome foreign city rife with corruption and violence.

Figure A is the film’s idea of Mexico and Mexicans in a nutshell, with the signature visual being a group of headless bodies hanging from a bridge. It is a veritable war zone of a city, with US officials unable to enter safely without police assistance and in the middle of a heavily armed convoy, and consistently having to alter their route to avoid streets that are experiencing unrelated gun violence. As a result, these images are in direct conflict with how the city of Juarez wants itself to be seen in the modern age, with New York Times reporter Victoria Burnett noting that according to residents and officials, the Juarez in "Sicario” is “yesterday’s hellhole”, a place different from the much calmer and safer Juarez of today (Burnett, 2015). In an article published on the Tribeca Film Festival website, Tribeca staff member Matthew Eng reported that the mayor of Juarez, the Mexican city in which a large portion of the film takes place, called for a boycott of the film along with citizens stating that “This film tries to portray a situation of violence as if it were the current reality of the city, which is not the case" (Eng, 2015). The article addresses the issue that the film deals with subject matter outside of its directors cultural scope, comparing it to other white-directed films about Mexico (that were not boycotted), specifically citing Steven Soderbergh's “Traffic”, Joshua Marston's “Maria Full of Grace” and Matthew Heineman's 2015 documentary “Cartel Land” (Eng, 2015). The film has codified Mexico in such a way that has come off as perverse or insensitive when viewed through the lens of a white director being the one to do it. Eng goes on to state that “Sicario, which generally fares better (and digs deeper) when alluding to bureaucratic prejudice and hierarchical gender politics, often feels like a detached stranger in a foreign land that it's not always ready to respectfully traverse.” The film is seen to be a journey into an “other”, a foreign land vague, incomprehensible rules and little to no morality, under the helm of a white director. For this reason, any negative connotations attached to the film and any inaccurate or outdated portrayals of Mexicans are a direct result of Villeneuve’s code in how he has constructed his filmic version of Mexico.

In direct contrast is “Snowpiercer” by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, where the film does not take place in South Korea. Rather, filmed in the Czech Republic, the film can be seen as “international” in its portrayal, with Figure B displaying its diverse cast and taking place literally around the entire world, the film is about a global train system running indefinitely on perpetual energy through an uninhabitable world where the inhabitants of the train have segmented into a dystopian class system.

In contrast to “Sicario”, the protagonists are largely white and seemingly American, but the antagonists are white as well. The “international” concept of the film has been taken quite literally by some researchers, with Brandon Taylor’s 2016 article for Cineaction Journal “The Ideological Train to Globalization: Bong Joon-ho's The Host and Snowpiercer” stating that “with the advent of Snowpiercer, (Bong) has extricated himself from the Korean national approach and entered into a liminal space with no assured or concrete discursive formula. Snowpiercer is thus neither an American film nor a Korean film. It operates in a trans-National discourse that makes it culturally illegible to both American and Korean

audiences.” (Taylor, 2016) Here the South Korean director’s choice of an American hero with the entire world as the setting space prevents his code from speaking too loudly about any lack of cultural knowledge - there are no “other” foreigners in “Snowpiercer”, Bong Joon-ho has decidedly not made any assumptions or generalized images about any particular group. Though this may have removed a stronger sense of “cultural identity” from the film entirely, it is still an example of a positive departure from a director’s own culture in order to explore the concept of another. This is an important contrast because both of these films happen to feature a distinct connotative sign - an ethnic “ferryman” character that acts as a bridge between two worlds in either film.

In “Sicario”, the character of Alejandro (Figure C) played by actor Benicio Del Toro acts a Mexican ally to the American protagonists (though Del Toro is actually Puerto Rican), providing invaluable intelligence on cartel activity and other forms of expertise that make the operations impossible without him (Villeneuve, 2015). In “Snowpiercer”, the ferryman characters are played by actors Song Kang-ho and Ko Ah-sung, a “security specialist” and his daughter, they act as technological experts that are able to overthrow the dystopian class-divide systems and allow for a coup due to their knowledge of the train’s security systems (Joon-ho, 2013). Both characters act as bridges between the status-quo and the unknown, but the difference between them is easy enough to discern just by the choice of actors.

In “Snowpiercer”, the protagonists are ferried onwards by characters of the director’s own race (Figure D), adding dynamic diversity and allowing the director to infuse the film with aspects of his own culture instead of codifying another. The matter of importance in this case is that he is both  In contrast, Benicio Del Toro’s character in “Sicario” simply reinforces the problem with Mexican portrayal in the film, as he is shown as an intelligent and likable individual with understandable motivations in stark contrast to any other Mexican shown in the film who are depicted as nearly inhuman. It lends the idea to the film that the white American heroes require an “acclimated” Mexican, and emphasizes the divide between a civilized and acceptable Mexican unlike any of the others in the film in order to reach the “other side” across from the civilized world of Western culture.

This is not to say, of course, that white directors specifically shouldn’t portray other cultures, but it is paramount to take notice of the power dynamic inherent when white directors are the ones doing said portrayals. Although “Sicario” and its unfortunate codification of Mexico cannot be officially classified as Orientalism, Orientalism has expanded since its inception past the “Orient” to include regions like the Middle East and Africa as a catch-all term for disingenuous and marginalizing depictions of any non-Western culture by the West. For this reason, it is reasonable to refer to the problem with Villeneuve’s connotative elements as Orientalism indeed, its narrow and brutal depiction of Mexico being that which Edward Said originally defined. While Mexico is not part of the “East” or the “Orient”, it is far enough removed from Western (United States) culture for its depiction in the film to be classified as an act of Orientalism in filmmaking.. The power dynamic between the United States and Mexico is overwhelmingly prevalent throughout the film, and to take this codification lightly is to delve closer to Orientalism than may be appropriate. In terms of power and authority, Edward Said writes in “Orientalism”, “There is nothing mysterious or natural about authority. It is formed, irradiated, disseminated; it is instrumental, it is persuasive; it has status, it establishes canons of taste and value; it is virtually indistinguishable from certain ideas it dignifies as true, and from traditions, perceptions, and judgments it forms, transmits, reproduces.” (Said, 1978, p. 102) Naturally and needless to say, the issue of white privilege needs addressing in this subject, as a white director naturally carries more influence in the world through his works regardless of whether or not he is aware of it, and this responsibility carries over into the connotations he inserts into his work. Inversely “Snowpiercer” opts to move beyond singular culture and work on a broader scale outside of the director’s cultural scope, avoiding the issue of cross-cultural conflict entirely as Snowpiercer can be seen as a culturally unidentifiable globally centralized film.

Gareth Evans’ 2011 film “The Raid: Redemption” is an action film shot entirely in Indonesia that showcases the Indonesian martial art pencak silat, which tells the story of an Indonesian SWAT team attempting to raid the hideout of a crime lord, having to fight their way out once ambushed and trapped inside. Evans is a white film director, and while his film may have garnered significant praise as an action movie, as a portrayal of Indonesia it may contain problematic connotations that lean towards Orientalism at worst, and stereotyping at best. While there is of course organized crime in Indonesia as in most developed countries, The Jakarta presented in the film is a fantasy, with a massive fifteen story complex housing a large and complex gang operation that is both ruthlessly efficient and deadly.

Figure E shows the monolithic structure as it appears in the film with over 20 floors, but such a criminal stronghold does not exist in Indonesia and is an additive element purely for dramatic purposes. In the 2017 book “Surveillance in Asian Cinema: Under Eastern Eyes” by Karen Fang, Evans is interviewed at length and admits that the building in the film is fabricated and does not actually exist in Jakarta. (Fang, 2017) This in itself is dangerous imagery for a foreign trans-cultural director to be infusing into another culture, especially since his only goal is admittedly to promote pencak silat and this could ostensibly be accomplished in any number of ways. Though Evans is ostensibly pure in his self-proclaimed mission of promoting the martial art, he appears to at least be somewhat aware of the implications of his success, stating of his Indonesian supporters “they haven’t seen me as some white devil, outside guy that’s fucking with their culture and stuff”. However, this isn’t enough to avoid the possible Orientalism inherent in the creation of the movie due to its semiotic content, in fact the connotations of the film are the most literal in terms of Orientalism given that Indonesia falls within The Orient. According to Edward Said, “Our role is to widen the field of discussion, not to set limits in accord with the prevailing authority.”  (Said, 1978, p. 231) For Evans, he is the figure of authority in the creation of the film and the connotations present in it are all on him. Karen Fang writes that, in reference to the target Indonesian audience of “The Raid: Redemption”:

“The cultural hybridity of Indonesian movie audiences in the early twenty-first century is the product of a long history. Ideas about martial arts, about heroism, and about the villainy and violence of local power brokers like the drug lord (antagonist of The Raid), have been shaped by long-standing indigenous political traditions but also by three hundred years of exposure to the West under colonial domination” (Fang, 2017)

If the trend continues, it runs the risk of Indonesians and the country in general gaining the connotation of being derelict and criminal as the film portrays the antagonists, or simply as “kung fu experts” for the protagonists, images which Evans has been involved in from ground zero. So while he may have received local approval and success, it does not excuse the potential of Orientalism, especially from an outside perspective in a politically charged place like Indonesia. To this end, he is fundamentally acting as the colonial presence in this relationship. Since the success of “The Raid, Redemption” and its sequel, a lookalike film starring the same actor this year has been made titled Headshot, not involving Evans, which according to IndieWire writer David Ehrlich “feels like it was cut together from The Raid’s deleted footage” (Ehrlich, 2017).

Figures F and G demonstrate the stylistic similarity of the two films, essentially boiling down to Asian martial artists assaulting one another if it is to be taken at face value, the point of the film being the demonstration of their martial arts prowess as it takes center stage at every key moment of the film and is the signifier. This is a damaging stereotype, noted in Psychology of Men & Masculinity journal’s 2012 article “Asian American male college students’ perceptions of people’s stereotypes about Asian American men” that:

“In contemporary U.S. society, this stereotype has been fuelled by medial portrayals of East Asian male actors (e.g., Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li) as highly skilled martial arts experts. The portrayal of East Asian male actors in such roles may have the effect of turning East Asian American men into “caricatures rather than three-dimensional human representations of masculinity” (Wong et. al, 2012)

So while these issues may seem benign at first glance, there is support that Evans may have had a hand in forming Indonesia’s modern global identity through his incredibly successful film contributions but may have also infused it with potentially damaging connotations to Asian males’ identities, now not only just for East Asians.

    This was not the case with South Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s 2013 American film “The Last Stand”, as the film is another example of nonwhite cross-cultural filmmaking that takes a safer, more subtle and considerate approach that also does not threaten to damage cultural identities. The film coincidentally deals with similar subject matter as “The Raid: Redemption” in that it is an action movie that deals with a group of heroes banding together to take down a wanted criminal. However, the thematic approach ends up being the exact opposite. The film acts as a comeback vehicle for Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, being his first film since a decade prior. As such, it presents Schwarzenegger as a hero sheriff protecting a small innocent town from an invader, a Mexican drug lord (Jee-woon, 2013). As opposed to anything negative, the imagery of the town in the film is symbolically shown as “classic” America, or Americana, as a peaceful and dusty border town vaguely resembling the all-American Great Frontier in a stylistic choice showing great respect to the culture he is transplanted into for the job.

As opposed to derogatory signifiers and signs being prevalent in its cultural depiction, the American town in the film is depicted as something pure to be defended from outside invaders, as the hero of the film uses all of the resources at his disposal to do as seen in figure H.The connotative elements in this film are fully realized by the director as American in every sense, reinforced by Jee-woon’s own admission of the film in an interview with Dave Trumbore for Collider that “if I were to make a comparison, it would be an American canvas with my colors on it. That’s probably the way I would best describe it” (Trumbore, 2012). The film is  The film could potentially be seen as a mild example of cross-cultural filmmaking in the sense that it resulted in an average American action film, but for Jee-woon it was the point, he notes that “Using the strengths of the American system, the American process, and melding that with my strengths and utilizing that, is probably one of the biggest reasons why I’m here.“ Instead of portraying the culture outside the director’s as corrupt or broken for dramatic purposes which would constitute a form of reverse-Orientalism.

    Throughout these four film examples of cross-cultural directing, it is clear that while the intent is certainly not malicious nor is it being received as malicious due to the overwhelming critical praise for the films, it is important to note the influence and power that privileged directors have over their audiences and what their images can mean when put to analysis years later. Moving forward with proactivity when handling other cultures, the ability to work outside one’s culture opens up endless filmmaking possibilities just as Gareth Evans and Kim Jee-woon were able to completely transplant themselves into other film cultures, or to completely move outside cultural boundaries like Bong Joon-ho. Currently, there is support for the idea that directors are perfectly capable of constructing nuanced and compelling portrayals of other cultures, but semiotic analysis shows that those portrayals are not just pieces of entertainment nor do they occur in a bubble, both parallels and stark contrasts can be found in almost any pair of films to learn from even when they were created under cross-cultural circumstances.

Today I come to you with the best mods that you can install to make GTA San Andreas feel like a completely different game.

30. Tuning Mod

The Tuning Mod is a fantastic modification for all vehicle enthusiasts out there.

It allows you to tune your cars like no other mod in the community, rivaling and even surpassing the tuning system of GTA V.

Modify the way tuning works in the game and give yourself a new car once you’ve installed this mod.

29. Skin Selector

I’m putting this mod here instead of any skin mod because you’ll need it to change the way CJ looks.

It basically lets you open up a menu that will allow you to browse through all of the skin mods that you’ve installed, so you can change the way CJ looks in-game.

28. HD Weapons

This amazing mod pack changes the way every single weapon in San Andreas looks.

It replaces all of the basic models that come with the vanilla game and turns them into the same weapons, but with an HD look to them all.

The UZI model looks particularly good, although all additions to the game are very well made.

It does seem like making this mod took a lot of time, but the effort of the creator was worth it.

The results speak on their own, and I’m sure you’ll love these new guns as much as I did. It makes everything feel new in an otherwise old game.

27. Teleport Mod

I find it hilarious how this mod uses the Portal logo as its own, given that it literally works nothing like Portal.

It’s still a really useful mod, though, as it basically adds quick travelling to the game.

Open up your map, place a marker, and once you unpause the game CJ will directly teleport to the spot that you marked.

CJ initially screams as if he was falling, but don’t worry – it’s just the map loading. You won’t take any fall damage!

26. New Effects V1

Are you tired of looking at the same and really old effects of San Andreas? I was too!

This mod changes the way water, light, fire, and interactions with other natural objects work in the game, to make everything look better and modernize San Andreas a tad more.

You will notice how many of the mods on my list are related to the graphics of the game, and that’s to be expected.

San Andreas is super old and many people don’t play it mainly because of its outdated graphics.

Some modders have come to create some fantastic graphical changes to the game, and I want to share them with you. I know you’ll love them as much as I did.

25. Collection of Graphic Mods

As its name suggests, the Collection of Graphic mods makes enhancements to the way the game looks by changing up a bunch of textures, shadowing, and lighting to make it look better and a bit more modern.

It’s a cool little overhaul that will improve the way your San Andreas game looks without breaking the natural aesthetics that made it such a popular title back in the early 2000s.

24. Wheels Pack

San Andreas is a pretty old game, so you probably already tried all of the wheels that the game has in the tuning stores for you.

I was tired of looking at the same tires too, so this mod came to be pretty handy for me.

It basically adds a bunch of additional tires that you can put in your cars once you visit any of the tuning shops across the dangerous city of SA.

23. Ghost Rider Mod

Are you tired of associating an amazing character like Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage?

Trust me, me too.

Something had to be done about it, and this is the mod to completely wash your Caged Ghost Rider image by turning CJ into the popular Marvel anti-hero.

Ride the streets of San Andreas and wreak havoc among them with the outfit and powers of the mighty Ghost Rider.

You will be able to see the flames on the skull as well as in the tires of your mighty ride. It looks awesome apart from being a cool gameplay change, so give it a shot and prepare to enjoy some of the most hilarious cutscenes in GTA.

22. The Best Sound Pack for GTA San Andreas

This mod is a complete overhaul to the sounds of San Andreas.

It adds so many sounds that you won’t even believe that it’s the same game if you cover your eyes while playing it (no idea why would you do that, but hey, to each their own).

This mod changes the sounds of explosions, cop cars, car breaks, opening doors, and much more.

If you’re tired of listening to the same sounds for years, this mod will provide you with a fantastic relief that will guarantee you to stay hooked to San Andreas for a little bit more.

21. Holes from Bullets

I have always hated how bullets seem to bounce off cars after damaging them in the old GTA games.

Yes, I even hated that back in the days when this game was the hottest title in the market – I don’t know why, but hey, there’s a reason why this seemingly pointless addition has made its way to a spot on my list.

It simply adds bullet holes to your shots, so whenever you hit a car, for example, you’ll see the spot where the bullet landed. It’s pretty cool!

20. V Graphics

V Graphics, as its name suggests, was made with the intention of giving you the graphical feel of GTA V in the world of San Andreas.

It’s a pretty complex graphical overhaul of the game, and you’ll need a decent computer to run it, but it’s super worth it if you can do it.

Combine this baby with a texture mod and you won’t notice a difference in visuals between San Andreas and GTA V.

Maybe even download a mod to turn CJ into Franklin or Michael and change the way the San Andreas story unfolds by looking at it from a different perspective.

19. GTA United

GTA United replaces the entire city of San Andreas with none other than Liberty City and Vice City, in a complete overhaul of the game map.

It adds new side missions to the game as well as Easter Eggs that could be found in the two predecessors of the famous San Andreas game.

This isn’t a canon mod by any means, but it will help you reminisce with two of the most emblematic maps that have graced our old TV screens and computers.

As far as San Andreas map mods go this one takes the cake.

18. Gravity Gun

Man, this is one of the most overpowered gun mods that I’ve seen made for the Grand Theft Auto series in general.

You can use the gravity gun to bring people towards you and throw them back to where you’re aiming at unfathomably rapid speed.

If you love canon mods, then you’re going to despise this one. Looking for some fun, though?

Go through the story of San Andreas using this baby. You won’t regret it – trust me.

17. Insanity Vegetation

This beautiful mod enhances every plant texture in the game to make vegetation look as great as in some modern games.

But I do warn you – be sure to download other graphical enhancement mods if you’re going to install Insanity Vegetation.

If you don’t it’s just going to look super weird watching a bunch of HD plants in an otherwise SD environment.

16. Weapon Menu Mod

The Weapon Menu Mod simply brings up a menu where you can choose whichever weapon you want in the game and instantly spawn it for CJ.

Regardless of how you want to use this mod, it’s a very practical tool that will help you get your hands in the game’s finest as well as least desired guns. Use it wisely!

15. Ultimate Graphics Mod

If your computer isn’t capable of handling high-quality graphics, this is the best mod that you can download when tired of the traditional San Andreas look.

It enhances the way texture load in the game, and even though it does improve everything substantially, it’s still suited to be used in low-end computers.

I believe this is possible mainly because shadows tend to be the one thing that computers struggle to handle (like Minecraft shaders, for example).

This mod adds a ton of graphical enhancements, but keeps shadows to a very low level of quality. It makes everything look great, but it doesn’t compromise the memory usage of your PC. Just what I need.

14. Textures for GTA SA

This sweet mod enhances the way the graphics of roads and streets look in the game.

It basically adds new textures to every single street in San Andreas to make the whole gaming look smoother, something that couldn’t be added back in the days of the release of the game because computers and consoles couldn’t handle higher resolutions in the game files.

Times have changed, though. And this is just one of the many mods that completely enhances the game graphically.

Combine it with others to make San Andreas some justice and modernize the way the game feels, at least in a visual sense!

13. Iron Man Mod

So, apparently, it wasn’t Tony Stark who created the Iron Man suit, and it somehow made its way to the streets of San Andreas.

How dangerous could be a gangster dressed up in the most powerful body armor ever created by mankind?

It’s up to you to write the fate of the people of San Andreas as well as the fate of your own foes, as you’ll be able to harness your favorite Iron Man powers and use them in San Andreas thanks to this ridiculously well-made mod!

12. Dragon Ball Mod

Why play with CJ in a world where you can simply download this mod and become Goku, or even Vegeta, the Prince of all Saiyans?

Press a couple of buttons after installing this fantastic mod and use your favorite Dragon Ball characters to wreak havoc through in San Andreas and bring misfortune to the citizens of this seemingly-cursed city.

Fly around, use ki blast to attack, and take advantage of the super-strength of these Dragon Ball characters to give your GTA San Andreas save a twist like no other mod can give you (except maybe the Iron Man or Superman mods, but you get my point).

11. Skateboard Mod

Oh man, this one is really well done.

The Skateboard mod will allow you to pick up a skateboard and roll around the streets of San Andreas like Tony Hawk would do in an alternate reality where he’s actually a drug dealer.

You would think that making such a complex mod work well wouldn’t be too easy, but the movement of CJ with this mod is so smooth that it makes you think that it’s a vanilla feature.

10. Car Spawner

Ugh, don’t you guys hate it when you want to spawn a car but you need to input some annoying code to activate it?

I hate it too, and that’s why this mod has come in as handy as they get.

It basically adds a whole new menu to the game, which allows you to instantly select a car and spawn it by just hitting one button. Pretty simple, right?

It’s great if you’re looking to spawn yourself some sweet rides and just enjoy the game for a bit!

9. Street Love

Alright, let’s get this one out of the way, as it definitely needs to have a spot on this list.

Let’s cut the explanation straight to the point as well: Street Love is a lovey-dovey making mod for GTA San Andreas.

Yes, you’ll be able to use CJ (or with your friendly neighbor Spiderman, if you have the mod installed) and screw around with digital chicks.

8. Superman Mod

CJ does know how to take bullets like Superman in the original game, as he could’ve gotten shot 10 times and just barely flinch.

However the Superman mod allows you to take things to the next level and actually become Superman in your game!

Fly around, use your super strength, and murder civilians as it would happen in a dark DC alternate universe.

7. Car Pack for San Andreas

San Andreas has been around for far too long, and I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of seeing the same cars over and over again.

There are some car mods that you can download, which will install them directly into the game. But you may also use this pack to get a bunch of them added instantly to your San Andreas safe.

Gone are the days of seeing the same cars pass time and time again – it’s time to spice up your game with a plethora of new rides!

6. Parkour Mod

The fantastic Parkour Mod allows CJ to perform true acrobatic moves without getting interrupted in the air.

Combine the essence of Assassin’s Creed with San Andreas and experience being a true gangster while also knowing a thing or two about street athleticism like it wasn’t originally possible in the game.

It really does spice up the game, and it’s actually hilarious seeing CJ perform many of these unexpected moves!

5. Portal Gun for GTA San Andreas

The Teleport mod that we mentioned above is cool and all, but why not bring the essence of GLaDOS to GTA San Andreas if you have the chance?

Sure, this mod will not take you from one corner of San Andreas to the other, but it will enable you to create portals, much as you do in the Portal games!

This mod is fantastic to be installed if you loved the famous puzzle-solvers, and it does enrich your San Andreas experience like no other mod on this list.

4. Memory Update for San Andreas

San Andreas was made to be run in old computers as well as the PS2 and the Xbox, which meant that the game was very limited in terms of how much memory it was allowed to use.

This mod updates the core GTA San Andreas mechanics and makes the game work with all of the power that modern computer has. Which enables your game to load much more of the map, increasing your viewing distance by almost as much as GTA V allows you to have.

Definitely worth trying in my opinion.

It unlocks many features that the game didn’t initially come with and allows modders to alter certain features of the game that weren’t meant to be altered in the initial release.
