Marcos Jr. Assures Overseas Filipino Workers in Malaysia of Their Rights

  Strengthening Ties and Ensuring Welfare

In an effort to strengthen the bond between the Philippines and Malaysia, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited Kuala Lumpur and pledged to safeguard the rights and welfare of the nearly one million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) residing in the country. During a gathering with the Filipino community on Tuesday, he emphasized the significance of their contributions and the need to ensure they are well-taken care of, have access to good livelihoods, and are provided with ample opportunities.   Acknowledging the Vital Role of OFWs President Marcos acknowledged the pivotal role played by overseas Filipino workers in fostering positive relations with other countries and upholding the Philippines' reputation abroad. He expressed gratitude for the commendable performance and dedication of OFWs, attributing the continuous improvement of the country's reputation to their hard work and commitment. Be it in Malaysia, the Middle East, Europe, America, or anywhere else across the globe, the President recognized the impact of their efforts on enhancing the Philippines' image internationally.   Assurances and Commitment Ensuring the welfare and interests of overseas Filipinos is a top priority for President Marcos's administration. He reassured the Filipino community in Malaysia that his government would address their concerns and protect their rights. Highlighting the substantial remittances from OFWs, he also acknowledged their significant role in contributing to the economic growth of both the host countries and the Philippines.   Focused Plans for the Future President Marcos emphasized the administration's dedication to implementing key plans to further the country's progress. This includes attracting foreign investments, controlling inflation, and enhancing agricultural productivity to ensure food security. He stressed the importance of large-scale investments and conveyed his message to potential investors worldwide, assuring them of the Philippines' stable and welcoming environment for investment.  

State Visit Agenda

During his state visit to Malaysia, President Marcos engaged in several significant activities to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation.  

Meeting with Malaysian Royalty and Leaders

President Marcos had a royal audience with King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, signifying the cordial relations between the two nations. He also held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss potential areas of synergy and promote people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and Malaysia.  

Advancing Agriculture, Tourism, and Digital Economy

One of the primary objectives of President Marcos's visit was to advance cooperation in key sectors. He emphasized the potential for growth in agriculture, tourism, and digital economic collaboration between the two countries, envisioning mutual benefits from such partnerships.   Engaging with the Business Community During his visit, President Marcos also actively engaged with members of the Malaysian business community, fostering meaningful connections to promote lucrative trade and investment opportunities between Manila and Kuala Lumpur. Ang Pagmamahal ay Pagsasakripisyo

Sa dinami rami ng mahihirap sa bansang Pilipinas, trabaho ang pangunahing solusyon para dito. Ngunit walang oportunidad na bumubukas para sa bawat mahihirap na Pilipino kaya’t ang tanging paraan ay ang mangibang-bansa. Ang desisyon para maging overseas Filipino workers ay malaking tulong ang naibibigay sa pamilyang Pilipino. Ito ang nagiging daan para magkaroon ng mala­king suweldo, mayroong magandang kinabukasan ang mga anak, at naiahaon ang pamilya sa kahirapan.

Pero ang lahat ng pagsisikap ng OFW para sa pamilya ay may kapalit din na sakripisyo. Tulad ng naiiwan ang asawa, anak, magulang, at mga kapatid. Kahit madali na rin magkaroon ng komunikasyon ngayon dahil sa Internet, hindi maiiwasan na napuputol din ang pag-uusap dahil sa pagkakalayo ng mag-asawa at pamilya. Kaya’t naman kung ako ang tatanungin, mas mahirap pa sa mahirap ang lumaki nang malayo sa magulang dahil importante ang pamilya, mahirap na wala sila sa tabi mo para sumuporta, makita kang lumaki at makitang abot mo na ang mga pangarap mo. Sa bawat paglayo ng ating mga mahal sa buhay, nawa’y hindi ito masayang, upang matupad din ang pangarap nating lahat.

Kung patuloy ang pagtaas ng bilang ng mga migrante, patuloy din ang pagbawas ng bilang ng lakas paggawa ng bansa na makapagdudulot ng paglubog ng ekonomiya nito. Subalit, kung titingnan ang kabilang bahagi ng sitwasyon, hindi lamang masamang epekto ang dulot ng migrasyon, hindi lamang karahasan ang nararanasan ng bawat migrante, maraming pamilya rin naman ang nakakaahon sa hirap dahil sa laki ng kinikita bilang OFW. Para sa akin, positibo man o negatibo ang epekto nito sa ating bansa ay marapat lang harapin natin ito ng buong husay at pagtitiyaga. Sapagkat tayo-tayo lang ang makakaresolba nito.

Seafarers’ mental health take center stage at SM

Hundreds of Filipino seafarers attended “Kumusta, Kabaro?”, a comprehensive mental health program launched by GOLD Foundation and SM Global Pinoy.

Over 25% of the world’s seafarers show signs of depression, according to the International Maritime Charity Sailor’s Society. Stress, harassment, bullying, fatigue, loneliness, and isolation from family can easily impact their mental health, which makes seafaring the second-most at risk profession worldwide when it comes to suicide.

To shine light on the issue, Gregorio Oca Leadership & Development (GOLD) Foundation, in partnership with SM Global Pinoy, the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), and International Seafarers Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN), held the “Kumusta, Kabaro?” Day at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City.

“Kumusta, Kabaro?” is a comprehensive mental health program launched by GOLD Foundation to raise awareness of the maritime community and the general public about the struggles seafarers face during their repeated departures from home. With the theme “The Seafarer Community for Global Mental Wellness,” the project aims to deliver hope and to promote mental wellness among Filipino Seafarers. The event was also held in celebration of World Mental Health Day and was attended by over 500 members from the maritime industry and their families.

“Ang issue ng mental health ay kailangan nating pag-tuunan. Hindi na ‘to isang bagay na kailangan natin i-deny,” (The issue on mental health needs attention and we can no longer ignore this) said Marissa Oca, chair of the Gregorio Oca Leadership & Development (GOLD) Foundation.

Atty. Noli Partido, AMOSUP Legal Department head, also pointed out that the issue on mental health is something we need to look at closely. “We need to act on the issue and come up with preventive and relevant steps to take care of our seafarers’ mental health,” Partido said.

The event consisted of various talks and inspirational messages from different maritime groups, the Department of Health (DOH), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Psychotrauma Clinic. It also included Zumba exercises and other wellness activities.

“SM believes that the seafarers’ mental health is a serious concern that we need to focus on. We fully support the maritime industry’s advocacy in raising awareness about the issue,” said SM Global Pinoy program director Glenn Ang.

SM Global Pinoy is the program of SM Prime Holdings that supports the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers and their families. It aims to give back and honor OFWs and their families through exclusive services, perks and privileges in its 31 SM Global Pinoy Centers nationwide.
