An interesting moment from POTO Vienna that I’d never caught before! After the Phantom disappears through the trapdoor in Masquerade, everybody runs over to try and find him.
so if anyone was watching PotO in Vienna tonight/June 14 2024. Did ANYONE happen to film Music of the Night. Please I'd give my soul for a video of the mask somehow just flopping backwards off of Roy's face I will give you my firstborn--
this might be a long shot but does anyone know how these sweatshirts fit, like what is the sleeve length/torso length? The website does not have a size guide unfortunately.
Just watched the phantom of the opera in Vienna and OMG THIS WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!
So, I literally travelled to Austria just to see the phantom of the opera because seeing it live has been my dream since I was a child (my family was already visiting central Europe but we barely had a day in Vienna so we took a flight back to Vienna to see the phantom) and honestly I barely speak German (I learned it in 30 days just for this trip) so I was super nervous and excited!!! And omg, that was probably the BEST production I've EVER SEEN of the phantom, the costumes were AMAZING and the cast was FLAWLESS. Honestly I wasn't expecting the songs to sound so beautiful and better in German, honestly now I prefer this version to the English one.
The actress that played Christine had such a beautiful and enchanting voice, and the one that played Carlotta honestly got a special place in my heart because she really captures the essence of the character (it was so fun to watch). Erik (aka the phantom) was also AMAZING and honestly I could stay here all day complimenting his performance. Every single detail was perfect from beginning to the end. Thank you all for making my dream come true!
Just walked out of the Viennese production and now I feel like a bad phan since I (my apologies) quite enjoyed it? The blocking still is questionable, especially the mask in the first lair, but live and after a gazillion refinements over the years the costumes and sets kind of worked as they are now? Overall it feels more like a theme park attraction than the gothic subtlety of Maria, but for first time viewers I think it was a lovely spectacle. So yeah not so much a question as a recommendation
Absolutely not! The production has come a long way since its rather messy UK days and experimental US days. The costumes has been massively improved, and the directing seems more focused.
I'm still not a fan of some of the stuff it has going on. I kinda giggled of your description of it being "more like a theme part attraction rather than the gothic subtlety of Maria", it's very much how I feel about it. It is very literal in places, and without the suggestive nature of the original staging. But I would like to see its current incarnation in Vienna, just to get a sense of how it is as a live experience. Also, the cast seems great, and seeing it would mean I have seen all current non-replica tours (the others being the Mediterranean version and the Middle East / European Tour). Time will tell...
What's wrong with this picture? Well, the costumes are all wrong for curtain call, even for restaged.
So there I was, in Vienna, excited to see my first POTO in a foreign language, and my first restaged tour.
Everyone is seated. The ushers are in the aisles with the sign with the "no photos" pictures. For eight minutes.
At ten minutes past, the stage manager comes out and tells us there are technical difficulties and to remain in our seats.
Another ten minutes go by and he comes back out and says there are still technical difficulties and they can't do the show and they'll give us all refunds. Instead, they're going to do a costumed concert of highlights. This is all I understood since I don't speak German. So it was an hour of, barely blocked highlights, in costume, in German. The state manager introduced the actors and narrated what was happening during the scene in the show.
The performers were often improvising in character since there were no props or sets. They were very professional in a very awkward situation. It was one of the strangest live theater experiences I've had.
"The ballet!" basically.
POTOMER DAY 30-LIVE SHOW EXPERIENCE-POTO Vienna Goes Wrong
From April 23 -June 11, I am posting 49 days of POTO content to mark the Omer, except on Shabbat.
Happy Opening to Phantom Vienna! Here are some new production photos that can be found here (x). Featuring some decent Sylvan Glade dresses, an updated Star Princess, a London-style boat, and the return of Christine's red scarf!
