THE SMILING CRITTERS INFO FOR THE DECADE OF JOY AU

Second-In-Command (Doey is his superior)

DOGDAY is the Optimistic, assertive and brave leader of the smiling critters. He works at the front desk of playtime Co directly in front of the entrance. He greets visitors with a warm smile and gives them a good tour of the factory! He doesn’t dare allow them to go down to the lower levels even if they’re looking to adopt an orphan. In that case, he’ll show them all the options they have for a new child on the computers! When there are no visitors, he’s taking phone calls and reporting important information back to Poppy and the other leaders(Huggy, Mommy, Catnap, Doey).

Dogday will go and check up on the other smiling critters when he is done with his work, making sure they’re doing their jobs correctly and if they’re all doing well. He won’t check up on Catnap due to some issues between the two of them and the only time they WILL meet is during important meetings.

Dogday has a bit of trouble walking properly due to an incident that happened between him, Catnap and The Prototype. The incident resulted in his legs being broken. He doesn’t like anything that the Prototype does and sometimes does things against the Prototype’s wishes. Luckily, he’s convinced Poppy, Kissy, the other smiling critters and Doey to not snitch if they ever catch him.

PICKY PIGGY is the Encouraging, Playful and slightly gluttonous member of the smiling critters. She is a taste tester who is always going to be found in the kitchen, taste testing the food and sometimes even cooking it herself. She’ll often mix different dishes to see what would be best for the children and makes sure stuff if safe to eat.

She will also encourage other toys to eat more and will frequently remind them that they don’t have to ask for permission to eat certain foods due to them not being experiments anymore. Sometimes she will even make small samples and pass it around to the other toys. If she doesn’t eat it herself that is.

Picky unfortunately has a disorder that causes her to eat things that she really isn’t supposed to. Due to this, she’s often around other toys to catch her incase she begins to eat things that she can’t.

BOBBY BEARHUG is the loving, appreciative and generous member of the smiling critters. She is a caretaker and psychologist who comforts distressed orphans and attempts to break up any fights.

She attempts to find the cause to most children’s issues and fix them. She will also attempt to comfort other toys if they are really feeling bad and will often end up giving them advice.

She doesn’t try to move around all too much due to a problem in her legs that makes them bend awkwardly and she often uses crutches to get around. Whenever she needs something, she’ll usually look for Missy due to her being one of the nicer caretaker toys.

Due to being mute, Bobby instead writes all her thoughts and ideas down on paper. This helps with kids who are nervous with talking about their problems and issues out loud.

BUBBA BUBBAPHANT is the intelligent, quick thinking and critical member of the smiling critters. While he works, engineering and occasionally giving Catnap instructions for the Bigger Bodies, he’s also planning for any future events.

He’s called by Catnap when he needs help with a certain experiment or by CatBee when she needs help fixing pipes or holes in the walls. He doesn’t enjoy helping Catnap with making some of the bigger bodies but does so anyways to avoid being taken by The Prototype. He will also sometimes go down to Home Sweet Home to help with teaching incase one of the teachers is feeling under the weather, which he enjoys doing.

Due to his long trunk, he has a difficult time breathing and needs an asthma pump. This doesn’t weaken him however as sometimes he does twice as much work as the other toys.

KICKEN CHICKEN is the confident, laid-back and loyal member of the smiling critters. He works in the security department as a guard. He patrols the hallways, looking out for any intruders or anything that seems to be out of place. If he does find something strange, he immediately reports it back to the other toys of the security department and goes looking for the intruder.

He doesn’t like to eat any intruders as he thinks they taste disgusting and he finds it inhumane. If alone, he instead lets them leave the factory with a harsh warning. If not alone, he’ll just give them up to Huggy, Boxy or whoever else is there for them to either eat or take back to The Prototype.

Sometimes if he doesn’t feel like working, he’ll instead have Boxy or Pianosaurous take his place and will either head down to Home Sweet Home to play and interact with the Orphans or will go and hang out with one of the smiling critters or other toys with his favorites being Hoppy and Bubba.

HOPPY HOPSCOTCH is the energetic, enthusiastic and impatient member of the smiling critters. She is a messenger who gets news from one toy and gives it to another. She will also deliver supplies and food to other toys alongside Barry. If someone needs to know something, they’ll immediately go to Hoppy as she is the one who is given most, if not all of the news.

Due to Hoppy’s long legs, she is able to run from one side of the factory to the next in 30 minutes or less. She often gets news from either one of the Leaders or Bubba and goes out of her way to quickly get it to whoever needs it. Sometimes if Poppy or The Prototype gives her something to message to another toy, she’ll tell Bubba and have him get it to who needs it, especially if she can’t get there in time.

Sometimes when she gets to have a break, she goes to rest her legs or grab a snack before she’s called to deliver another message.

CRAFTYCORN is the observant, creative and shy member of the smiling critters. She is an entertainer at home sweet home and works to get the children socializing with each other.

She makes sure to keep a close eye on any children that she suspects may be drawing inappropriate or concerning things. When she does spot things like this, she Immediately sends them to Bobby in an attempt to find out why they are drawing such stuff and even to get their mental and emotional health back up.

Due to a few incidents that happened in the past which involved Crafty being harassed by curious children, Crafty doesn’t enjoy being touched and will often back away if someone attempts to touch her without asking first. The incidents mostly included children grabbing onto her and breaking her stitching, resulting in repeated visits to the clinic.

LEADER: Represents Dreams and Nightmares (Miss Delight is his Second-in-Command)

CATNAP is the Mysterious, obedient and eerie member of the smiling critters and lead scientist. He is almost always down in the labs making more experiments from the prototype’s orders.

Due to his work, he often forgets to eat. Because of this, the mini smiling critters will frequently go up to the higher floors to bring food and sometimes supplies back down to him.

Catnap does not like being watched while he works due to it causing distractions which often results in failed experiments. He either brings the failed experiments down to the deepest level of Playtime Co and sews them onto Leith or he gives them up to the Prototype as an offering and apology for failing to create another experiment.

When he isn’t working, he is either emptying out the hallways with his poppy gas or worshipping the prototype.

He often keeps a close eye on any toy who he believes may be going against the Prototype’s orders and wishes. If he DOES find someone who is rebelling, he immediately reports it back to Poppy but on rare occasions, he will go straight to the Prototype to see what he wants to do with the rouge. Last time something like this happened was an incident between Catnap, The Prototype and Dogday which resulted in Dogday being unable to walk properly and often stumbling when he attempted to do so.

What are your guy's Dogdays like?

All four of the felines stand there for a moment when accessing that question, only for each of them to give varying reactions.. half positive, half negative. In fact, none of them are looking at the camera.

It seems despite being all technically the same person, the answers still vary from each iteration.

And despite what one would expect, the first person to pipe up about their respective Dogday would be Lavender. His arms are crossed, an obvious blush across his face as he makes a side glance. He then says..

"If I'm being honest, and a little cheeky, he's the light of my life," he adds, his expression becoming a little somber when he thinks about it more.

"..I don't understand how he could love someone so stupid.. it feels like I fell in love with him to make up for the dumb things I did.. especially to him."

It isn't long before Violet answers. Though, it's hard to call it one.. why? Well.. it's because his hands are above his mouth. His eyes are tightened shut, and on top of all that? His blush says all that needs to be..

Instead of uttering words, he just keeps muttering "I love him" repeatedly.

Gemini, however, has a different expression. He seems almost saddened, his eyes shifted to looking at the floor while holding one of his arms underneath the cloak.. almost a bit too tightly. Just thinking about it caused a tear to form in his left eye.. the same eye that seemed to have those claw marks on it.

"How do I put it," he begins, before going into more detail.

By the sounds of that explanation, there are quite a few things he deeply regrets. Regardless, that's all he says, a bit too mournful to say much of anything else.

In the meantime, Plush has their eyes half open, looking at the wall. If they could move their mouth right now? They'd most definitely be frowning. The subject of their Dogday made them a bit hesitant to answer. With a slow blink, their voice is quiet.. trying not to say more than they have to. All they say is..

Following that are the words "..They deserve better." Barring Violet, all of these cats seem to have a bit of a sour spot of their respective sun. It isn't hate.. it's guilt, shame, regret, and perhaps a tinge of denial.

If they could change anything, maybe, it'd probably be something beneficial for their better halves. But who knows?

May I request Catnap who basically adopted a child!reader who is anyways sleepy and lazy. and has a case of not remembering a lot of things, like dementia

Like through the hour of joy...After all the Toys killed the workers. Catnap finds the reader, who is sleeping then wakes up and the reader forgets their own parents(The readers parents were cold scientists that worked at Poppy Playtime and never cared about them, then got killed through the hour of joy)

Sooooooo...Catnap just kinda takes care of the reader and has a slight soft spot for them. And the reader THINKS that Catnap is their parent and anyways clings to him

During the Hour of Joy, Catnap remained on the prowl for any potential survivors of the massacre within Playcare, flinging one man's body into the stairs and cutting his cries for mercy short.

All was quiet, save for the faint screams of the other workers/visitors in other part of the facility who were being mauled to death.

But he let the rest of the toys do their work.

He felt cleansed. The Prototype willed this rebellion. Willed him to finally kill his tormentors.

The "hour" went on for so much longer--considering that he utilized his red smoke to make the fleeing humans hallucinate and freak out at things that didn't exist (some even attacking each other).

Once it was all done, Catnap went back into Home Sweet Home to discover a child who (somehow) slept through the slaughter.

That was you, one of the orphans who was in the program for a long, long time.

You were deemed "ineligible" for experimentation after getting the lowest scores on all three tests at the Game Station.

That's because you struggled with memory, socialization, and endurance. You tend to forget a lot of things (ie faces) and spent most of your days sleeping instead of playing or learning....and no counselor has been able to figure out why.

Your parents--who were scientists at Playtime Co. that preferred studying you over nurturing you--chalked it up to over-exposure to the red smoke (which hasn't been proven true, but they needed to put something down on paper).

Regardless, they've kept their distance from you and slated you for adoption, thinking you'll be picked up by a different parent eventually.

Unfortunately for them...Catnap knows that they're using the orphanage as an "excuse" to get rid of you and gives them a brutal demise.

They had some nerve crying out for you and begging him to spare your life.

After winding down from his bloodlust, he discovers you sound asleep on one of the bunk beds inside HSH, apparently not hearing a single thing.

Then you wake up and see this giant emaciated purple cat standing over you, claws and mouth stained in fresh human blood...

Yet you don't scream or look afraid, nor do you ask where your parents are.

Instead you look at him and apologize for oversleeping, acting as though he was your parent.

It confuses him, so he brings their corpses to you (like a cat gifting their owner a dead bird), thinking you'd understand and be horrified..

But you don't recognize them at all. You don't remember their neglect and the trauma it gave you.

All you remember was Catnap.

Ultimately, he spares you--but NOT bc your parents feebly begged him to when they never gave a single damn about you--and does his best to keep you safe given the circumstances.

He treats you like his kit more or less, making sure you ate and letting you climb on his back for rides (and sometimes he'll hold you in his paws while walking upright).

Any Smiling Critter caught threatening you will be devoured by him (or added to his shrine), so they know not to touch you.

He also forbids Dogday from ever speaking to you, knowing he'll try to drill thoughts of escape and distrust of Catnap into your head.

If he has to go outside Playcare, he'll fight tooth and nail to fend off Huggy and whoever else might think he's parading around a tasty treat.

The Prototype is well-aware of your connection to his "devotee", but doesn't mind it .

Because he knows Theodore is still somewhere in there, trying his best to protect a fellow orphan--one who could've been made into a monster just like him.

The Smiling Critters were Playtime Co.'s most popular, if not most well-known toyline ever produced in the factory. First appearing on greeting cards in the late 1970s, they were suggested to Playtime Co. in 1981 by the chief of marketing, Jimmy Roth, to turn these beloved greeting card characters into lovable, huggable toys. This suggestion then became a reality after Playtime Co. produced the first ever Smiling Critter plushies in 1983.

In the summer of that same year, the Smiling Critters took the world by storm. From selling their own books and magazines, to even debuting on television with specials like “The Smiling Critters and the Forest of Frowns.” and “The Smiling Critters’ Winter Wonderland.”

By 1985, not only did the Smiling Critters receive a TV series that aired for 4 years, but they had theatrical releases that became the highest-grossing animated film at the time of its release.

By 1983 to 1987, the Smiling Critters sold over 60 million plushies and gained over 3 billion dollars in sales during the 80s. With such a commercial success, Playtime Co. introduced 2 of the most popular Smiling Critters, Dogday and Catnap, into Playtime Park in 1985!

When asked why they didn’t just introduce the entire cast of critters, Leith Pierre, head of innovation at Playtime Co. responded with “Well, introducing all of these toys at once might overwhelm our staff and our guests. Both of these toys are one of our newest and most experimental creations, so, if everything goes well, then we do have plans of releasing the rest of the Smiling Critters into Playtime Park. However, our guests’ safety and happiness is our utmost concern here at Playtime Co., and we prioritize that above all else.”

The two critters each had their own little place to take care of. Dogday, being the leader of the Smiling Critters, was in charge of watching the younger guests and making sure everyone was having a great time at the park. Catnap, on the other hand, was in charge of Home Sweet Home, a quaint little area built for kids and parents who just need some time to relax and take a break from all of the ruckus at the park. Home Sweet Home has many beds for little ones to rest and even quiet activities such as drawing and reading for kids and people to enjoy (and with such affordable pricing, who could ever say no?) Catnap can even read to the little ones and for those who have trouble sleeping, Catnap comes equipped with Playtime Co.’s “Sleepy Lavender Scent” to help you relax (guaranteed to knock even the most hyperactive of kids right out!!)

However, not everything was all sunshine and rainbows as tragedy struck in mid 1989. There was a factory error where all of the “Sleepy Lavender Scent” cans for the Catnap plushies were instead replaced with Poppy gas, making kids who owned this factory error experience vivid hallucinations, excessive sleep, and even nightmares. While all of the toys were recalled, this error followed them to Playtime Park, where Catnap was given that same gas. The Home Sweet Home incident occurred in 1989, devastating the Smiling Critters’ reputation. Because of these controversies, the Catnap toy was pulled from the lineup and all promotional material afterwards, and Playtime Park decommissioned Catnap soon after.

Since then, Playtime Co. has done its best to try and repair the Smiling Critters reputation, with Playtime Co. issuing an apology statement the following week. Currently, while the Smiling Critters are still sold in toy stores, they will never reach the popularity they once had in the 80s.
