Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, fur trader and railroad financier was born in Forres, August 6th 1820.
Donald Smith was the son of a saddler, a commoner, he was educated at Anderson’s Free School, he left school at 16 and was started his adult life apprenticed to become a lawyer at the town clerks office in Forres, so he was smart and was not going to toil as a crofter like his family had before him. At 18 he chose to leave Forres and follow his Uncle who had been successful in the fledgling Companies in 19th century Canada, so it was he set sail for Montreal to become a junior clerk in the service of the Hudson’s Bay Company, in what was then Lower Canada.
Smith’s achievements are numerous. For a record 75 years he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He became Governor of that company, a substantial investor in the Canadian Pacific Railway, a benefactor of McGill University, where he founded Royal Victoria College for women in 1896, and founder of Victoria Hospital in Montreal, the list goes on and on in industry, politics, and philanthropy.
Lord Strathcona went on to use his incredible wealth and status to help build Canada into a nation, he helped establish the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canada’s independent military. He contributed large donations to medical science and women’s education, among many others. His estate was valued at $5.5 million. During his lifetime, (remember this was a self made man),and including the bequests left after his death, he gave away just over $7.5 million plus a further £1 million (not including private gifts and allowances) to a huge variety of charitable causes.
If I was to compare what Smith achieved during his life with anyone else the only person I can think of is Andrew Carnegie. The pics show the man himself, the second posing to hit the ceremonial last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway, behind him to his left is the subject of a post last month, Sandford Fleming, thegroup pic is a memorial plaque in Forres that states
“Donald Alexander Smith Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal Pioneer, Statesman and Philanthropist in Forres on 6th August 1820 in the family home on a site close to this wall near the banks of the Mosset. He emigrated to Canada in 1838 and eventually became governor of the Hudson Bay Company. Concerned with the development of the dominion he became co-founder of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1896 he was appointed to the United Kingdom As a High Commissioner for Canada and received a peerage the following year. He raised and equipped Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) for service during the South African War. Many local including Leanchoil Hospital and St. Laurence Church benefited greatly through his renowned generosity. Lord Strathcona died in Canada on the 21st January 1914 Erected by the Community Council for The Royal Burgh of Forres 1988”

so far away from where we want to be
Pieck Finger. Porco Galliard. Beaches. Bonfires. Photographs From The Past. Modern AU. 2146 words. (ao3.)
The sun in the sky is just barely touching the mountains across the water. As a result the hue of the atmosphere is mostly blue with an enchanting mix of pinks and oranges splayed in the distance. It’s a sight so tantalizing that one can forgive the chill in the air, as the weather of early June can only warm much at this point of the summer.
In the middle of a Pacific Northwestern beach — one decorated by a mixture of sand and rocks — is a burning fire surrounded by young adults, most of which are college students and all of which are some flavor of not-sober. Porco’s not sure which category he belongs to yet, but he nurses a plastic cup filled with bottom-shelf vodka and gatorade he’s sure that he’ll find out soon.
With his back against a log he sits on one side of the fire. A rugged blanket covers his legs, something he shares with the person who brought him here. When he’s not taking slow sips from a drink fit for a king, he’s taking note of the others at the fire.
There’s a gathering of people near the log across the flames, where one brunette girl strums an acoustic guitar in true outdoorsy fashion. She opts to play anything but Wonderwall as her loved ones gather around her, something that Porco is very thankful for. Everyone holds themselves in the way that only established social groups can, existing without a care in the world as the music mixes with the sound of the waves lapping at the shore.
The sight only serves to remind Porco that he’s technically an outsider. The truth is that most of the people around him are strangers, other students at a university he doesn’t go to. Had he not been invited he wouldn’t be here, but that fact in itself doesn’t deter him from at least trying to have a good time.
“When’s the last time you got a haircut?” comes Pieck’s voice, and soon Porco feels her nimble fingers grasping at the strands on his head.
He turns to face her sharply, giving her a bothered glare that he reserves for her and only her. On reflex he swats her hand away, a gesture that causes a playful smile to creep onto her pretty face.
“What are you? My mother?!” Porco asks, using his palm to put the strand back in place. Even all these years, all the pomade and hairspray it takes to slick his hair will not stop her from messing it up.
Pieck lets out a chuckle. “Hey, I’ve had some guys call me ‘Mommy’ before, so…”
Porco squirms in his spot, letting out a grumble imbued with his discomfort and unease.
There are moments where he misses Pieck and wants to hear every detail of her misadventures in higher education, but other times he wishes that she wouldn’t be the living embodiment of TMI. It doesn’t help that she often speaks in a way that makes it hard to tell whether she’s being serious, or whether she’s just saying shit to get a reaction out of him. Though in his years of being her friend, Porco has learned that at least sixty-percent of the time it’s the latter.
“Great,” he grumbles, then takes another sip of his drink. “Definitely needed to know that.”
Pieck lets out a chuckle before nudging his shoulder with her own. “You know, you’re funny when you’re uncomfortable.” In her hand she swirls the drink in her cup like it’s fine wine. “And even funnier when I’m drunk.”
He raises an eyebrow at her. “You’re already buzzed?”
“I’m getting there,” Pieck assures him, then takes a quick pull. Her nose wrinkles slightly, implying that the taste is not as appealing as she would like. “I’m taking it slow though, we’ve got all night.”
Despite the shiver that had plagued him a second ago, Porco can’t help but crack a smile. It had certainly been a while since he had seen Tipsy Pieck. That night had been years ago and was the evening after they graduated high school, when some dude in their class threw a house party and really lowered his standards on who to invite. Apparently, no rager was complete without the guy with the fuckboy haircut or the valedictorian who no one expected to become so in the first place.
Porco predicts that he might see a fragment of Tipsy Pieck tonight, but as long as there aren’t any tables to leap onto or fountains to dive into she should be okay.
“Guess you’re getting the best out of your college experience, huh?” he remarks, turning his attention to her.
“Well, I better!” Pieck laughs. “All this tuition has to be going somewhere!” She takes another sip of the janky mixture masquerading as a cocktail, then continues without missing a beat. “Modern education, Ladies and Gentlemen. Speaking of which! I didn’t ask…”
There’s a subtle change in her eyes that imply she’s being just a little more serious. “How’s your shit going? Are you a paramedic already or what?”
Porco rolls his eyes and wonders if he should bore her with the details. Him attending community college doesn’t sound as fancy as her attending the UVic. He considers repeating some of the jokes that his instructors tell, that people in his particular field want to be nurses but hate working in hospitals more than they hate being underpaid. Or that if he wants to see even more fucked up things on the field then he’ll get his firefighter certification on top of everything else.
But he spares her the rant, and he’s not sure why but perhaps it has to do with this being the first time he’s sat next to her in months.
“I’m two terms away, then I should be certified,” he tells her instead.
“You’re still doing that ride-along thing?”
“Sometimes, yeah.” He nods, then shrugs. “It’s stressful, but it’s experience. It’s what I signed up for.”
He stops himself from waxing lyrical about every outing being the embodiment of ‘sink-or-swim’ and instead changes the subject.
“What about you? Still thinking of grad school?”
“Yeah, but that’s a while away,” Pieck replies, undeterred. “I really shouldn’t be eyeing any schools yet when I’m barely out of this one.” When she puts her cup to her mouth she takes a longer pull than usual, almost finishing her drink. “Though one of my professors did promise to give a good letter of recommendation if I ever considered Concordia.”
Porco tilts his head to the side. “That’s in Montreal, right?”
The smirk that Pieck shows him is both amused and playful. “Why yes, Porco, and that’s all the way in Quebec,” she speaks with the aura of a high school geography teacher. She even pats the top of his head like he’s a puppy who just learned to stop shitting on the rug.
In any other circumstances Porco would give another glare while she remains relaxed, but at this moment he’s still trying to wrap his mind around her words.
Perhaps it’s a little silly to fixate on something she mentioned so casually, something that might not even mean anything in the long run. But for a moment Porco lets himself think of what could become of him and her.
Obviously, she had always been the smarter one. Not that Porco was lacking in that aspect as well, but straight-Bs certainly sounded less impressive than straight-As. It was Pieck who earned admission to UVic and not him, and even if she still lived in the city and was never too far away, Porco didn’t see her as often as he used to. Even if their casual texts were answered eventually, sometimes the time between each response got longer and longer. Whether he was studying the different kinds of medicine used to stabilize a patient or she was doing whatever it is that neurobiology undergrads do, it was hard to deny the distance between, even if said distance was slight. The thought of that distance getting any bigger doesn’t sit with him quite well.
“That’s very far,” Porco ends up saying.
In his mind he wants to say something more akin to “I’d miss you” but perhaps that’s a little too forward.
Pieck finishes her drink before putting her cup down. “I know,” she says in a way that sounds like she’s talking more to herself than to him. She takes in a breath and looks forward beyond the bonfire. “But… don’t worry about it.”
She shifts underneath their shared blanket and Porco can feel her knee bumping his. It’s a gesture that he’s familiar with, as their childhood movie nights can attest. Pieck’s father never let her sleepover, but sometimes Mr. Finger took his sweet time getting to the Galliard residence when he knew that the two were marathoning Pokemon movies.
Feeling her nudge him now reminds him of those long nights, of the hours they spent sprawled out in the den on a pile of blankets and pillows. Perhaps the only difference now is that Pieck no longer has to shake him awake three movies in and Porco’s rocking a little more leg hair.
Pieck’s eyes are now on the atmosphere. She looks up and admires the horizon. The sun has set just a bit further and makes the sky look just a bit pinker. It’s the kind of sight that makes her sit up to enjoy it all, but despite the beauty of the Pacific Northwest being as clear as ever, Porco can only keep his eyes on her.
As to be expected her hair is still long, stringy, and unbrushed. The woven cardigan that hangs off her shoulders is a size too big, making her look smaller than she really is, but that’s always been the way she’s dressed.
Soon a bright idea pops into his head and makes him chug the remainders of his drink. Ignoring the sudden buzz now rushing to his head, Porco reaches into the pocket of his shorts and takes out his phone.
“Hey, check it,” he starts, tapping her shoulder. “My mom put this in the family group chat last week.”
Pieck leans back and puts her attention on his phone. With the device he brings up a week-old text log, one that involves a bunch of ancient photographs that had been found in the depths of the Galliard attic. One of them is over fifteen years old and is as awkwardly lit and framed as most pictures from that era tend to be.
Pictured on the screen is Porco looking no older than five, donning a dashing set of overalls and smiling in a way that teeters between absolutely adorable and the creepy child in a horror movie. Standing next to him is another kid sporting a pair of garish eyeglasses and a dress that seems to have been designed after the carpet in an arcade.
While Porco looks proud to have dug up a part of their past, Pieck looks aghast.
“Oh fuck, that still exists!?”
Despite the utter despair in her voice, Porco lets out a laugh.
Pieck sighs and runs a hand over her hair, a habit she does when she’s embarrassed. “Oh man, this was before I grew into my nose, wasn’t it?”
Porco scoffs and wonders if she seems more fixated on that and not her father purposely putting her in such a strange outfit.
He thinks back to the day the photo was taken, attempting to recollect the memories surrounding it. While he can barely recall the name of his kindergarten teacher, he can remember his mother insisting that the two pose for a photograph together and not giving Porco time to smile like a normal human. He can’t even remember why she felt the need to take a picture, just that she did it and now such an image has been immortalized forever.
But the uneven edges is what adds to the photo’s charm. It’s funny to think that the two dweeby mouthbreathers in the picture are now sitting on the world’s most picturesque beach, still together after all these years.
With that in mind, his anxious thoughts of Pieck leaving for greener pastures fade away. He puts his phone down, then adjusts the blanket so that a little more material is covering her legs. She gets cold easily and he’s never forgotten.
When he looks at her now she is no longer bothered by the jump scare of a vintage photograph. She looks more at ease, smiling as she leans against the log and lets him tend to her.
Maybe this time next year things will be different, she’ll be on the other side of the country and he’ll be driving an ambulance around the island. But for now they’re here and that’s all that matters.

Today is MBARI's 36th anniversary! To celebrate, we are sharing the story of MBARI's R/V Western Flyer.
David Packard believed that addressing the challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one independent in spirit and collaborative by design. He founded MBARI on the core principle of scientists, engineers, and marine operations working in equal partnership to develop innovative marine technology. The research vessel Western Flyer embodied MBARI’s willingness to think big, be bold, and invest in long-term outcomes.
Tumblr media
Constructed in 1996 with a unique twin hull design, the 117-foot SWATH vessel represented David Packard’s vision of developing innovative new platforms to better access and explore the ocean. SWATH, which stands for small waterplane area twin hull, means the ship is much more stable than more common monohulled vessels. This stability, combined with a specially constructed moonpool at the center of the vessel, made the ship an ideal platform to deploy, operate, and recover remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). For much of its time at MBARI the Western Flyer worked together with the Doc Ricketts, MBARI’s ROV capable of exploring to depths of 4,000 meters (2.5 miles).
Tumblr media
The Western Flyer was instrumental to many of MBARI’s achievements: from studying ecosystems that could give insights into the impacts of climate change on the ocean, to identifying more than 200 new species—including a crown jelly, a harp sponge, and an incredible bone-eating worm named Osedax westernflyer in honor of the ship itself. During its quarter-century at MBARI, the Western Flyer also traveled to conduct research beyond its home base of Monterey Bay, venturing northwards to sites such as the Pacific Northwest, and southwards to places like Hawaii and Mexico’s Gulf of California.
Tumblr media
After 25 years of serving as MBARI’s flagship research vessel, the Western Flyer has begun a new chapter in education. MBARI granted the ship to the University of South Florida, which hosts the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO), for use as a sailing classroom. FIO will provide students with a unique mix of at-sea and on-shore training and mentoring to build ocean science, engineering, and maritime trade skills. The new program will focus on engaging students from historically black colleges and universities, minority-serving institutions, and tribal colleges, providing an opportunity for students of diverse backgrounds and experiences to learn more about careers in ocean science, engineering, and marine operations. MBARI wishes the Western Flyer well in this next stage of its life, as it continues to foster the spirit of exploration in future generations of the ocean STEM community. Learn more on our website.

LIST ABOUT 3+ HEADCANONS ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN CHARACTER!
Brittany only auditioned for Troubletones because she thought it was the nice thing to do after hearing so many of her peers talk badly about the “Glee” kids.
Brittany drives a bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle that breaks down more often than it actually runs.
Brittany has known from a young age that she’s at the very least not 100% percent hetereosexual and finds it very confusing that some people require a label or formal notice of her penchant for kissing pretty girls, namely Santana.
BIOGRAPHY
Brittany Pierce, a 22-year-old college student, radiates warmth and determination. Growing up in a tight-knit family in a small town, Brittany’s love for animals and the ocean was nurtured by her supportive parents and her younger sister Jamie. From a young age, Brittany was captivated by the wonders of the natural world, spending weekends exploring tide pools and volunteering at the local animal shelter with Jamie by her side.
Personality: Brittany is a compassionate and driven individual with a heart as vast as the ocean she adores. Her optimism is contagious, and she approaches every challenge with a can-do attitude and a genuine smile. She values kindness, empathy, and authenticity, and her easy-going nature makes her a beloved friend to all who know her.
Education: Currently in her junior year at Oceanview University, Brittany is pursuing a degree in Marine Biology with a minor in Conservation Studies. Her academic pursuits are fueled by her passion for protecting marine life and preserving the world’s oceans for future generations. Whether she’s conducting research in the lab, analyzing data, or participating in fieldwork expeditions, Brittany’s dedication to her studies is unwavering.

Their parents, who run a local bed and breakfast, have always encouraged Brittany and Jamie to pursue their passions and follow their dreams, instilling in them a strong sense of determination and resilience.
Dreams and Aspirations: Brittany’s ultimate goal is to combine her love for animals and the ocean with her desire to make a positive impact on the world. She dreams of working for organizations like National Geographic or the World Wildlife Fund, conducting research, and advocating for marine conservation on a global scale. Affirmative action — the decades-old practice of assigning a positive weight to some candidates’ race during application processes — is over, at least for college admissions. I’ve yapped about this in a few different forums, but will give a somewhat unique take here: The practice’s end is a good thing for minority kids.
For at least the past three or four decades, as all experts but surprisingly few laymen know, affirmative action has almost never actually meant directing technical aid to STEM programs in struggling “POC” schools, or even assigning some slight weight to race among well-qualified and otherwise roughly equal competitors. Instead, the standard practice in higher education has been to give extraordinarily large race-based bonuses to almost every black or Hispanic applicant to a selective college. The basic reason for this is simple and obvious, if awkward to discuss: There are currently substantial and fairly stable performance gaps between different racial groups on board tests like the old SAT, and any college that wants to “look like America” is going to have to take these into account.
During the very representative year of 2017, College Board data reveal that mean scores on the SAT exam were 941 for blacks (479 verbal, 462 math), 963 for native Americans (486, 477), 986 for native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (498, 488), and 987 for Latinos of all races (500, 487). Whites turned in a fairly solid 1118 (565, 553), and the average for East and South Asians was almost 1200 (569, 612). A great deal can be said about these scores, and about the gaps between them.
First, notably, none of the averages are all that terrible in any global context, or for that matter when compared with the averages when velociraptors roamed the land and yours truly was a high-school student. And they vary a bit year over year: Native Americans have since dropped behind blacks, while Asians have continued to surge forward, posting a mean of 1239 in 2022. But one stark reality remains constant: The typical reasonably selective college essentially confronts three distinct groups of applicants every year — the various black, Hispanic, and native populations scoring at around 950, whites scoring at around 1100, and Asians scoring at nearly 1250.
Admitting students from these groups in anything close to proportional numbers, logically, would require — and did require until this year — affirmative-action advantages that are roughly the size of the gaps between the different populations. This has led to a remarkable and measurable level of “mismatch.” For example, per 2013–16 data, a black medical-school applicant with a lower-end MCAT score of 24–26 and a college grade-point average between 3.2 and 3.39 has long had about the same chance of acceptance — within the same set of schools — as an Asian applicant with a 30–32 MCAT and a GPA between 3.6 and 3.8.
To provide a bit more context: During the same period, an Asian college graduate with a 24–26 MCAT had just a 6 percent chance of entering medical school, while an equivalent white student had an 8 percent chance. In contrast, a black scholar with a 30–32 MCAT and respectable GPA was 94 percent likely to secure admission. Nor were the nation’s medical schools unique in this regard: The SAT subject-test averages for 2018 applicants and admittees to Harvard were, respectively, 622 and 703 for blacks, and 726 and 767 for Asian Americans.
To state the obvious: While no doubt infuriating for rejected white and Asian contenders, mismatching at this level was also terrible for admitted blacks and Hispanics. It is difficult to imagine a less friendly and welcoming introduction to the collegiate experience than being tossed into the mix at some hyper-competitive grist-mill school like Harvard or the University of Chicago, 200 SAT points behind the ability curve, while surrounded by potentially hostile peers skeptical of your right to be there. Almost certainly, as Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor point out in their 2012 book Mismatch, this reality explains much of the relative lack of black and Hispanic success at many top U.S. universities.
While these gaps may be closing somewhat, the black graduation rate is currently seven points lower than the white graduation rate at Yale (96 percent versus 89 percent), ten points lower at Cornell (93 percent–83 percent), 14 points lower at the University of North Carolina (83 percent–69 percent), 15 points lower at UCLA (88 percent–73 percent), 16 points lower at California-Berkeley (86 percent–70 percent), and an astonishing 21 points lower at my own alma mater’s Big 10 rival, the University of Michigan (88 percent–67 percent).
Absent any mismatch effect, a great many bright minority kids currently slogging their way through Michigan or an Ivy institution — and recall that a Harvard applicant with a 622 on each section of a tough test is objectively no fool — would simply have gone on to success as STEM majors at Southern Illinois or Kentucky State. Presumably, following the decision in the Fair Admissions affirmative-action case, exactly this will happen.
It is also worth noting a point so unbelievably obvious that it feels a bit bizarre to make it: Terms like “diversity” are not in fact just code words for “(liberal) black people.” Absent affirmative action, the student bodies at major U.S. universities will not be made up entirely of blonde white folks. As was noted above, essentially all large East Asian groups do better on the board tests than whites do.
South Asians like Indian Americans do as well — and Nigerians and Jews very probably do as well, although their data is harder to break out from that for larger ethnic populations. Especially if our country’s elite ivory towers are forced to abandon legacy admissions alongside affirmative action, many will be almost as multi-colored after merit admissions as before. Those who don’t make it in will still be well positioned for success at solid institutions one level down. In any sane sense of these words, it is hard to see this as a bad thing for “integration” or “minority success.”
A great deal about the future of race relations on campus frankly remains to be seen: Are legacies next? Will colleges simply duck the Fair Admissions decision for the next 15 years by using BS alternative metrics for race, such as “racial-adversity scores”? However, for now, it is worth remembering that a legal ruling that prohibits automatically advantaging the son of a Cuban dentist over the daughter of a Filipino shopkeeper does not brutalize the Brown Team or “promote white supremacy.” Across all races and eras, there has never really been a fairer system than “May the best man win.”

At some point, merit has to win out.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program, established in 1999, is a 1.6 billion dollar initiative funded by grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Goal:
The goal of the GMS program is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential by:
Reducing financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need.
Increasing the representation of these target groups in the disciplines of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences, where these groups are severely underrepresented.
Developing a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating successful completion of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
Providing seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines.
GMS Scholarship Benefits:
Support for the cost of education by covering unmet need and self-help aid. Renewable awards for Gates Millennium Scholars maintaining satisfactory academic progress. Graduate school funding for continuing Gates Millennium Scholars in the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. Leadership development programs with distinctive personal, academic and professional growth opportunities.
GMS selected 1,000 new Scholars each year and we are now funding over 20,000 Gates Scholars since 2000.
Approximately 54% of scholars are first-generation students – the first ones in their families to go to college.
The average undergraduate GPA is just over 3.0.
The average first-year undergraduate student retention rate is 96.2% (Active or deferment) among Gates Scholars; the average second-year rate is 93.2% (Active/Deferment).
The six-year graduation rate is nearly 90%, compared to the 58% of all college students in America (for low-income students specifically, the number is around 41%).
Nearly 37.5% percent of Gates Millennium Scholars transition into graduate school after earning a Bachelor’s degrees.
Gates Millennium Scholars have enrolled in 1,742 different colleges and universities.
14,677 Gates Millennium Scholars have completed a degree since the Program’s inception.
Of the active entering Freshmen in the 2015 cohort, 40.9% (n=399) are attending highly selective colleges which admit one-third or fewer of their applicants. 51.1% (n=499) are attending colleges which admit 40% or fewer of their applicants. 58.7% (n=574) are attending colleges which admit less than half of their applicants.
Gates Scholars have come from all 50 states and all American territories and commonwealths.
The GMS Program is more than just a scholarship. GMS offers Gates Millennium Scholars with Academic Empowerment (ACE) services to encourage academic excellence; mentoring services for academic and personal development; and an online resource center that provides internship, fellowship and scholarship information.

President's Day: James Carter - the 39th President of the United States
Tumblr media
Former President James "Jimmy" Carter is on my mind these days as he is, at age 98, entering hospice care.
Perhaps now more famous and liked for his post-Presidential career than his time during office - a period during which I would not envy anyone who was in the White House - Carter may not be with us much longer, so now seems like an opportune time to remind all of us who Jimmy Carter is other than a nice old man who spends a lot of time volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.
Carter was born and raised in Plains, Georgia, where his family had a peanut farm.  He would leave to go to college, finishing as a Naval Academy graduate, which led to his military service aboard submarines in both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets.  Clearly he had something going on upstairs as he was selected to study reactor technology as nuclear submarines came online.  Yes.  He's a nuclear engineer.
Even as a kid, I remember hearing Carter was "a peanut farmer", which was true.  With his father's passing, Carter returned to Georgia in the mid-1950's to take over the family business, which had diminished significantly.  Carter and family wound up living in public housing. which he grew into a considerable agricultural supply enterprise, while also becoming involved in the local community.  By 1963, Carter - with the navigation and support of his wife, Rosalyn - ran for office as a State Senator, uncovering local corruption of party politics along the way.
It should be noted that Carter's platform was pro-desegregation, and much of his political stance of his early career was based on his support of the Civil Rights movement.  However, his 1970 run for the Governor's office was marred by appeals to segregationists - who he essentially betrayed during his inaugural speech, seeking an end to segregation.  Pretty wild.
As governor, he focused on the Civil Rights movement, educational equity, and opportunities and care for a wide array of Georgians.
Carter served one term before running for President in 1976, partnering with Walter Mondale as a running mate and narrowly defeating Gerald Ford, the Gerald Ford of presidential candidates.
During his governorship, Carter had not played ball well with party hardliners, and arriving in DC, he didn't particularly endear himself to the legislature, refusing horse-trading for political actions and pushing back against the Ted Kennedy-led wing of the Democratic party.  What I personally remember was that Carter took a lot of blame for an economy he inherited from Ford, which had a 9% unemployment rate and inflation that we're only seeing again lately.  His efforts at economic recovery were knee-capped by the 1970's energy crisis, which wound up as a key part of Carter's legacy (he pushed comprehensive energy strategies that got some traction).
Carter established the Department of Education, Head Start, and fought for better healthcare coverage 0 perhaps including universal coverage - a fight that continues on to this day.
Carter was a Cold War-era president, but his focus wound up on creating a peace between Egypt and Israel, and I grew up knowing what the Camp David Accords were, and what part the US played in Mid-East peace, which was a factor for the US constantly through the early 2000's.  If you want to understand how long and how f'd up the US's history has been with Afghanistan and why every time we start talking about Afghanistan a lot of us grind our molars, Carter was in office when the Soviet Union invaded the country, which would go on for years.  We, of course, provided weapons and support, all of which had a very long tail as we chose perhaps the not-best allies in the region.
And, of course, Carter was at the wheel during the Iran Hostage Crisis, which is one of my earliest TV News Memories (along with Reagan being elected, Reagan being shot and Pope John Paul II's attempted assassination, which I frown upon).
It's worth noting that during the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant incident, nuclear engineer/ President Jimmy Carter walked right into the plant during the emergency to be briefed in a way it's impossible to see any prior or subsequent president participating.
The first Presidential Election I can recall was the 1980 election and I remember sitting on the floor while my parents explained that they'd both voted that day and for different candidates.  I found this mind-boggling, but also somehow comforting - but which also set me up to really not get how insane people are about their candidates of choice.  Everyone simmer down out there.
Carter was roundly defeated by Ronald Reagan, and retreated to Georgia.
I don't recall hearing much about him until 1994 when he went to North Korea on behalf of Clinton.  According to the internet, this went way crazier than I remembered, with Carter trying to outline a treaty without Clinton's consent.  Huh.  You do you, Jimmy.
After this, Carter started appearing before cameras again, and now he was "Telling It Like It Is" Jimmy Carter.  This isn't to say he was a crazy old man - he sounded 10x more lucid and well-considered than anyone in office who had to worry about optics, etc...  and it occurred to me that he was probably an incredibly smart man that usually had a hard time compromising and communicating, and he might make a far better elder statesman than he had a president.
For the past two decades, Carter has fought off brain cancer while also participating in community work like Habitat for Humanity, speaking with current presidents as an advisor and generally being a decent moral touchstone for some Americans.  As a President who was in office during a period of complicated history coming home to roost, in many ways, he was just the guy in the chair when a multitude of things occurred that had been problems set in motion by prior office holders, but that's the job.  It's always the job.  Carter in particular seemed to take it on the chin for not being a magical being who could fix all the ills that beset the nation in the wake of WWII's post-history, the Cold War, US interventionism (which he built upon), and an economy prior administrations hadn't wrangled particularly well.
Again, that's the job.  No idea why people want it.
As Carter enters his final days or weeks, he has a mixed legacy as a politician.  Like all people, he's complicated and contradictory and occasionally compromised.  But I'd argue he's used his last few decades showing us what ex-Presidents are capable of if they seek to show the world a level of decency and betterment for others through service.

June 29, 2023
(NBC News) — Many Asian American groups and leaders are speaking out against the Supreme Court ruling that struck down affirmative action Thursday.
Some experts and activists argued that the decision is an example of Asian Americans being used as a “wedge” to erode civil rights.
They point out that while the two cases, led by conservative activist Edward Blum — who is white — argued that Harvard and the University of North Carolina’s policies discriminated against Asian Americans, no Asian American students came forward to testify to experiencing discrimination.
“The white supremacist agendas behind these lawsuits use the small number of Asian Americans against affirmative action as pawns in their efforts — weaponizing the model minority myth to divide our communities,” The Georgia-based nonprofit Asian American Advocacy Fund said in a press release. “Affirmative action policies have played an important role in securing Asian American access to higher education.”
Polling shows that a higher share of Asian Americans support affirmative action, with 53% who have heard of the policy saying it’s “a good thing.” Another 19% say it’s a negative thing. A separate 2022 survey from the nonprofit group APIAVote, which polled registered Asian American voters, showed 69% favored affirmative action programs “designed to help Black people, women, and other minorities get better access to higher education.”
A few things from my perspective (and, if it isn't obvious, I'm pro-affirmative action):
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are a large group. And they are often talked about as an aggregated group - with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean American largely dominating perceptions. If you disaggregate the data, you will find that Southeast Asians, all Pacific Islanders, and South Asians (particularly non-Indian South Asians) are underrepresented in higher education and are beneficiaries of affirmative action. The remainder of the groups are mostly overrepresented and are the ones who are driving any discourse of "Asians are overrepresented" in college admissions.
As a former student of the University of California system... California got rid of affirmative action by voter initiative in 1996. It took two decades and a lot of money to get appropriately diverse student bodies back to where they were before that initiative. This came easier for everyone who wasn't UC Berkeley (sorry, I refuse to say "Cal") or UCLA. The most selective UCs are the furthest behind when it comes to having a student body that is well representative of the community it services.
As for one of the plaintiffs who filed suit against Harvard after he was denied a spot there and is whining he's attending Georgia Tech instead? No sympathy. Focus your ire on legacy admissions instead.

Catie hardly remembers her mother being around growing up. With no real father in the picture, the only constant in her life growing up was her older brother, Coty.
The boy only 4 years her senior raised her and to this day she is eternally grateful and indebted to her brother.
Academically Catie did very well in school. She was a mostly straight-A student and graduated high school with Magna Cum Laude Honors and was the salutatorian at her high school graduation. All while working a part-time job she had started at 16 to help her brother put food on the table.
Catherine finally decided to do something with her life after graduation. She applied to the University of Seattle where she was accepted and received academic scholarships to attend. She graduated college at age 21 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and is contemplating returning to school to receive her Master’s Degree in Nursing.
After Graduating College Catie landed her dream job at Seattle Memorial working under her college mentor.
During her college days, Catherine met a man a few years older than her named Eli. She was smitten with him instantly. He was nothing like the boys back home, he was a gentleman and it was the first time anyone saw her as a desirable woman and not just Coty’s kid sister.
At 19 Catie found herself following in her mother’s footsteps of being a young mom when two pink lines appeared on the pregnancy test. Eli was excited about the pregnancy so by proxy Catie was too. Determined to be a better mother than her own she had decided to work on her degree till the baby was born, she would then take a break to find her footing in parenthood before starting back up.
Catie was only 3 months pregnant when she noticed some blood spotting one afternoon which was accompanied by some abdominal pain. She quickly rushed herself to the hospital where they informed her she was miscarrying. Eli did not handle losing their child well which ultimately lead to the beginning of their relationship crumbling down around them.
He became toxic and manipulative pretty fast. He was constantly thinking she was sleeping around or talking to other guys after they lost their child to ‘numb the pain’ or “to replace him” as he would put it
She started to distance herself from him. The pain of the miscarriage was hard on her and instead of helping guide her through this tough time Eli was doing the opposite. He began staking her every move, watching everything she did, and showed up wherever she was to make sure she was with who she said she was with.
It turned violent a few times, especially during heated arguments. He would grab her by her arm so she couldn’t walk away. He was always sorry afterward when the finger mark bruises would appear wrapped around her bicep. Finally, She had had enough and packed her bags, leaving what she couldn’t fit into her two ruffle bags and disappeared into the darkness of night while he slept. She promptly returned back to Angel Ridge seeking the comfort of her brother.
She has been back in Angel Ridge now for a few months and is currently working at Memorial hospital as a Registered Nurse
She’s very closed off right now as she processes and deals with her ex-boyfriend but to those close to her she will go to the ends of the earth to make sure they have everything they need.
Never really approved of her brother being a greaser but understood it and the ties the group had to their family through her uncle. She’s not affiliated with any of the gangs but given that her brother is a greaser she does show a ‘favoritism’ to them.

Dolores Huerta (1930-)
Tumblr media
Co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta is one of the most influential labor activists of the 20th century and a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement.
Born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico, Huerta was the second of three children of Alicia and Juan Fernandez, a farm worker and miner who became a state legislator in 1938. Her parents divorced when Huerta was three years old, and her mother moved to Stockton, California with her children. Huerta’s grandfather helped raise Huerta and her two brothers while her mother juggled jobs as a waitress and cannery worker until she could buy a small hotel and restaurant. Alicia’s community activism and compassionate treatment of workers greatly influenced her daughter.
Discrimination also helped shape Huerta. A schoolteacher, prejudiced against Hispanics, accused Huerta of cheating because her papers were too well-written. In 1945 at the end of World War II, white men brutally beat her brother for wearing a Zoot-Suit, a popular Latino fashion.
Huerta received an associate teaching degree from the University of the Pacific’s Delta College. She married Ralph Head while a student and had two daughters, though the couple soon divorced. She subsequently married fellow activist Ventura Huerta with whom she had five children, though that marriage also did not last. Huerta briefly taught school in the 1950s, but seeing so many hungry farm children coming to school, she thought she could do more to help them by organizing farmers and farm workers.
In 1955 Huerta began her career as an activist when she co-founded the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization (CSO), which led voter registration drives and fought for economic improvements for Hispanics. She also founded the Agricultural Workers Association. Through a CSO associate, Huerta met activist César Chávez, with whom she shared an interest in organizing farm workers. In 1962, Huerta and Chávez founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), the predecessor of the United Farm Workers’ Union (UFW), which formed three year later. Huerta served as UFW vice president until 1999.

--- quick tl;dr. ---
i. born in amstelveen, noord holland, the netherlands. his mom split and left him with just his father when he was about three, and it was a very stressful situation. most stories revolve around kids growing up with their single mom and a deadbeat dad that disappeared, rhett’s is the opposite. when his mother booked it, his father took up multiple jobs to keep them afloat. one such job took them to san francisco when rhett was five ---a big move, but his father was looking forward to leaving behind bitter memories. they packed up what was was worth taking and split to the west coast.
ii. it would be a lie to tell you that rhett was an exceptional child. his grades were always passing, but somewhere in the b to a minus range, possibly higher if he actually gave a damn. it took a long time for him to discover what he wanted to do ---his childhood was spent floundering through hobbies where none of them really stuck. sports were a joke, and the one time he tried surfing he got yanked half a mile away from shore in a riptide. (he finds the whole ordeal hilarious, honestly, but his father made him promise not to do it again, so he promised). the only thing that really ever stuck with him was his carefree attitude, and his ability to make a joke out if anything. aloof. when he graduated high school he was appointed class clown, and it followed him everywhere.
iii. somewhere around 17 he discovered his love for the technical side of music. he took an elective of music theory as a joke and completely fell in love with it. his father was ecstatic that something seemed to stick, and when college rolled around he took care of the first two years of a general liberal arts degree at a community college before transferring all of his credits to a university for audio engineering. his father had set aside enough money for him to pay out of pocket for the two year’s associates, but after that rhett took out student loans. (he’s mostly paid them off now, thanks).
iv. and he took after his father with the work ethic. college was met with working at least two jobs, three during the summers. money was sorted evenly to a saving’s account, bills, and immediate necessities. his father let him live in their house in outer sunset for the duration of college until rhett got his own place after. at first it was a dingy little studio but he graduated into his current home in pacific heights after some time. primarily he works as a dj for the cat club (and has for many, many years) but has taken many freelance jobs on the side engineering (mixing, mastering) for up-and-coming musicians. he’s even worked on the sound for some small-time indie films, which earned him the ability to have a nicer place. he’s always been frugal with his money, a smart spender.
v. ever the joker, he never quite grew up. somewhere in the middle of it all he forced himself to keep in touch with his inner child. while it might appear that he shirks adult responsibilities, the reality is that rhett keeps that side to himself, and very private. the largest case is taking care of his father ---he visits their outer sunset home (his father refuses to move, despite rhett offering multiple times) at least four times a week, if not every day. his father still insists on working ---you can catch him gardening at a local cemetery (he likes to make sure that the flowers for the deceased are nice and pretty) and offering a kind word to the mourning, or a nice chat to a jogger, if you know his schedule. rhett himself has that kind streak in him, but mischief takes over. he learned how to appreciate life from his father, and refuses to let any negativity sway him.
-- fun facts. --
i. is very much a cat person. he has a pet cat presently, alastair, that rules his house. to that end, he doesn’t like dogs, even so far as having a slight fear of larger dogs (though he’ll laugh it off as anything but that).
ii. has no memory of his mother, but really doesn’t think fondly of her at all. there’s no good reason to abandon your husband and child, and rhett thinks every lifetime movie that praises a mother as a lone hero is a joke. to that end - he’s fiercely protective of his father, who he understands and always saw as sacrificing part of himself to ensure his child had a good upbringing.
iii. god, he loves music. it’s why he dj’s, primarily. he likes a little of everything, and keeps an open mind. his set lists are primarily drum and bass, edm of many varieties, and synthwave but he like to mix some of everything in there. he hates country music. and while he can appreciate some of the modern pop stars, he also hates taylor swift. don’t ever try to convince him otherwise of anything else.
iv. he might appear as a slacker (he kind of is) or aloof (he really is) and uncaring (depends) ... but he’s actually very observant and quite intelligent ... especially when it comes to music. he loves the technical, mathematical and theoretical side of it. he loves to make his own synth sounds in his spare time, and he loves a good rave to get lost in the feeling of music. he thinks in music, hears in music, sees in music.
v. has never has a serious relationship, largely in part to seeing how broken his father was upon his mother leaving them. he knows his father had other girlfriends, but he kept them quiet and never paraded them around the house, and now as an elderly man his father is happily alone. rhett is afraid to open himself up to someone, to ultimately be left alone ... so he never gives anyone the chance.
